Good morning all,  I've been occupied this week getting new roof put on our house.  They started yesterday putting on new sheeting prior to installing shingles.  All kinds of crud falling between the cracks into the house.  Got everything covered with plastic but doing a lot of clean up.  Waiting for the inspector to come this morning before proceeding.  Have not done much with the trains this week.  Talk more when this is over.

Later, Ray

Good Afternoon,

I have been a bit busy lately and that is why I haven't been over here on the Coffee Pot thread. Seems like something is always breaking down or needs fixing.

Water heater on RV went out, started leaking, ended up replacing both the water pump and the hot water tank as both were leaking. After that I hooked the RV up to city water straight from the faucet, the other day I got the current water bill and it was almost four times the normal amount per month. I took the RV off the straight water hookup and put it back on the holding tank, will see what the bill is next month.

Went to Miami to Ready To Roll last tuesday and bought some more track. Was tempted to buy another MTH freight car but figuired that I really didn't need it.

Will try to be on here some more next week.

What a week of ups & downs, feel blessed just to be able to sit down and do a little catching up.  Received a call Sunday afternoon that one of my closest friends had passed away on Holy Thursday, he and I started teaching together in 1970 (both of us on our 2nd schools).  He was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gherigs disease) not quite two years ago, they told him 2-5 years, he didn't make it to two.  He was a master teacher and had a sense of humor that never stopped, even less than 24 hours before he died.  We were able to make the visitation but had a conflict on the day of the funeral.  I will really miss him, we are the same age, 64.

On Tuesday our oldest son's jazz band had qualified for the Iowa Jazz Championships, largest HS jazz competition in the USA.  He has worked super hard this year with a fine group of kids, long story short - his kids finished in 6th in in the BIG school competition.  For those of you who dig jazz check out the video link  http://fc.cedar-falls.k12.ia.us/~engelhardtk/     Extremely proud of him, the top 15 bands sound as good as many college bands, especially the top 8.

Last night our youngest son called and announced that he is engaged, about time!  He and future bride are both 30, I hope they have a ton of kids and they are all just like their Dad, he's the one that tested my patience more than once but he still turned out to be a winner. He's my riding partner in the summer so I need to have a heart to heart with his future wife :)  I think he and I have become closer these last 5 years than any time prior.

Tomorrow is my wife's very significant birthday and she's been trying to ignore it, not going to let this fun slip by.  We are off to MPLS/St. Paul to celebrate an engagement party and a BIG birthday party.  I made a very important stop at the jewelry store today, all bases covered.

Did I mention that the construction crew showed up a week early?  We are adding on a 4 Season room but they weren't supposed to start until next week ......... 16 x 16  so it's going to be a real plus.  We had in that area a big deck w/hot tub but it's all gone now, looks like bomb went off!  I know we'll really enjoy that area even more, I hope to get a lap top computer this summer so I can sit out there w/coffee and really enjoy the views of the timber/deer and wild turkeys while supervising the smoker!

I was once again grounded firmly this morning while working with inner city kids, so much potential but so little help at home.  I really do enjoy my time with them.

That's it, I need a nap but that's not on the schedule.

Take care.

Jon, Condolences on the loss of such a close friend, it's like losing a family member sometimes.

That addition sounds pretty cool, but remember when you are supervising the smoker "watch not drink the Wild Turkey". Wink

Good evening all.  Still  here at the hospital.  Some long cases and a busy schedule.  All cases went well, just very complicated surgery.
Jon, sorry to hear of your friend.  I too have a friend with ALS, but he has lasted longer.  Is nothing like he used to be physically, but his wit is strong.  Also, two things I wanted to mention:  Being that you like Jazz and like your rides... you should look into "SunFest" in West Palm Beach, FL.  I think it is in May.  They have a number of very big names in Jazz as well as up and coming talent.  They combine it with a bunch of other attractions to make a good week of it.  Also, regarding inner city kids, I spoke with the music director at our church.  Since a number of us have kids taking Violin and other music instruction...we are going to start a stockpile of our instruments as the kids outgrow them.  Then, through the local symphony, we will have them distributed to the kids who can't afford them with the requirement that they take the lessons too.

Well, it has been a long day.  Going to try to make it home so I can have some dinner and see the family before the kids go to bed.  Really looking forward to York.

God Bless,
Dennis

Home from class about 9:00 PM. Enjoying a glass of wine and catching up with the POT. Covered last of new material tonight. Classes next week will be review and finals the following week. That weekend off and class starts again the following Monday if enrollment reaches critical mass. No trains for days. Been trying to catch up on yard work: weeds, tomato plants, cut down the root stock growth so the satsuma can grow. Got all scratched up when the last branch came down. Have had the windows open all day for most of the last month. Windy and chilly at times but-oh, is it refreshing. Airplane and Amtrak trip coming up end of May to Michigan for first grand niece's high school graduation. United Air to Chicago, Chicago subway to downtown, Amtrak to Kalamazoo, graduation, Amtrak to Kalamazoo, Washington via the Capitol Limited, and the Silver Meteor back to Jacksonville. Can't wait!!!

JOn and RT, sorry for your losses.  Good news on the pending marriage though.

Banks - great pic!

Well - got call from wife's doctor, couldn't get hold of her on cell or at home.  She has to turn off cell at work.  Wouldn't tell me what was going on due to Hippaa (well, wife says she signed those papers, but they didn't find them).  Finally got hold of my wife and she called - doc was at lunch.  About an hour later she calls all shaken up, because doc said her hemoglobin went from 8.8 gm/dl to 7 in 2 weeks -- go to hospital immediately.  So, I told boss I had to go and a couple hours later she's checked in and they are doing tests.  GI doc showed up and said he thinks it's probably an ulcer.  They are giving her a transfusion now and also other meds to clean the pathways.  She'll get EGD and colonoscopy tomorrow trying to find the source.  No other symptoms and she feels fine.  It was pretty scary for a while, but at least they think they know that they are looking for and action is being taken.  Grandma was able to come and get our kids from school and will do so again tomorrow.  I'll keep you all posted.

Mike, you run the tardis tonight, Kurt can run it tomorrow, and RT the day after that if I'm not back up to it.  I'll keep you guys posted.  Maybe get on tomorrow morning before going to hospital, we'll see.  TTFN!

Jon, RT - condolences for the loss of your friends.

Brutus - prayers for your wife.  What certification did you test for?

Dougdagrump - great minds think in the same gutter.  I think the Harry Potter coaches appear to be priced above fair market value too. I also stopped by my local hoppy shop last week and ordered a grim reaper gateman.  I've got a maiden rescue on order and gave brief thought to setting them side by side so the grim reaper will be visible when the maiden is on the track and will dissapear when she gets rescued.

Another Netflix envlope showed up yesterday.  Was the next installment to Lost.  Watched all four episodes last night with my wife.  I sure like watching TV shows with the commercials removed.

Partly sunny and high sixties here today.  Supposed to deteriorate into rain and thunderstorms for the weekend.

Ticking off the 53,000 mile self maintenance items lately.  Physical last week, dentist nex Monday, back to the doctor yesterday so he could pull a 1/4" diameter piece of mole off and send it to the lab - got three stitches on that one.  Expect lab results in about a week.

Train stuff - Bidding on a couple of E-bay items, preparing some photos for SPF, ordered a MTH Ann Arbor box car.

Later all.

8N, Is it just me or does it seem like the E-Bay prices have been going far higher than what they should be ?

That being said I did break down and buy a couple of flatbed trucks off E-Bay to add a bit more to an army train:

Did a lot of "Google" shopping and far and away this guy had the best price, even so it took great strength to push the "enter" key on the keyboard. Blush

Everything loaded into the truck for tomorrow's run at the museum.

Thanks for the nice comments on the picture

It's a beautiful spring morning here, headed for the 60's. Great weekend predicted too.

Jon & RT my condolences.

Concerning Ebay. It seems to me that the prices of common items are falling while the rare items are still commanding high prices

Good morning all,

IIABSDISEI with temps near 70.  Oooopps, I did it again!   Sliced my right thumb on ice cube tray this morning at work.  Fortunately some people were able to get me patched up.  I am really getting tired of getting hurt.  Three times in the last two months!!!   Aaaaarrrggghhhh!  Too much sad news around here lately,  and too many losses.  Prayers, condolences and thoughts for all who have suffered loss.  I know it is a part of life, but....   Brutus, I hope they find and fix whatever is wrong with your wife.  It was no problem driving the Tardis last night, but I will be MIA tonight with both thumbs not being 100%.  Did weights and a little soccer at the YMCA last night, but not much else.  I had the regular fare on the dining car.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Morning all. Sunny and pleasant here in downtown Chicago - but 'cooler near the lake'.  Prayers for your bride, Brutus. Mel, let me know when you're coming through Chicago to get Amtrak - you'll have to walk west from the downtown Blue Line to get to Union Station. Mike C, glad you're OK. Nice truck, Doug.  Kurt, caught the end of a good game between the Hawks and Flames last eve - first playoff win for the Hawks in years-and-years.

Good Mornin', Ya'll,

It's my turn to ask for some prayers from you guys.  FIL (will be 88 in June)called me yesterday.  For two weeks has been having escalating pains in shoulders, thighs, and a wrist.  Asked me what I thought it was.  Told him I was clueless and to get his butt into his Doctor before it becomes another classic midnight or weekend run to the ER on a gurney.

May have to break out the lawnmower for the first time this season this weekend.  I need a rider.  Daffodils in full bloom for about a week, tulips shortly.  Told Chief things are finally greening up around these parts.  Bugs are coming out of hiding, and the weeds survived the Winter better than my lawn.

Well, Chief was right about the length of our phone call yesterday, just not about which of us got in more words.  He's way too busy.  After hearing all of the stuff he's knocked off on "to do lists" and what was on his agenda, I got worn out just thinking about it all.  Had to lay down and take a nap after we hung up.  He must drive more in a week than a long haul trucker.

RT......prayers that the outcome of your tests is favorable.  I've had chest pains since age 16 which were ultimately diagnosed as pleurisy, caused by irritation.  Left side chest pains and shortness of breath on and off now for over 40 years, mostly off.  When the Lord put me together He/She didn't leave quite enough space in there for all of the parts, or so I was told by the docs.

Jon....... my prayers for your old friend.  ALS is brutal, lost my neighbor at 44, he was quirky but a good guy and father.   Docs thought his initial symptoms were caused by a disc issue, no such luck.  But his wife and two kids were well taken care of due to his planning well before he was stricken.  Congrats on and thanks for the link on your son's jazz band performance.  Now that you are to become the FIL, a bike for the DIL would be a good wedding present.  Had to laugh at your comment re wifes upcoming B-day.  When we celebrated the daughter's last one, my wife observed that it was a miracle of nature that they were only two years apart in age.  I smartly agreed.

Brutus......you have my prayers for the wife's prognosis.  Was glad to hear this was discovered now.

DougM.....I remember fondly those 5-6 year old days.  Wound up coaching my son's team because one of the Dads had to drop out due to his job.  The kids were great.  Some of the parents were rabid knuckleheads.  More than once felt compelled to stop a game to ask one of the Dads to dial it down a few notches or leave.  Even one of my team's own coaches needed the same time out.  Why the latter was allowed to coach his son's own team was beyond me.

SirJames......with all of the injuries in the starting lineup of Tardis drivers and with some MIA because of York, it looks like you and I will be pressed into action as pilot and copilot.  Just remind me to bring my glasses, cell phone, and AAA card when you pick me up.

Laz......I love rooting for the Cubs (Completely Useless By September) and for you in your season long golf battles with your bro.  There is a warm feeling knowing the curse of Sisyphus soldiers on.

Lee......you've got plenty of time to get the RV squared away since the rest of us don't plan to visit you in FLA until the snow flies again.

Chuck.....it seems we will be getting some of your warm weather this weekend up my wya, but not quite the 70s.  Don't forget your sunscreen and cool shades.

OleTimer......re your weathering powders and the continued delays receiving them, there is no rest for the wicked.

Buckeye......re the snowblower, don't forget to put the stabilizer in the gas tank.  That's on my list of things to pick up.  I wound up with way too much gas still in the tank this year.  We love you if for no other reason than you have a boat.  But what's not to love about you? Here comes the tidal wave from points East and South.

Dennis.....when I volunteered to take all of your work related phone calls for you while you were in York, I meant for you to use "call forward" so you could have some peace and relaxation at York.  Same for Roy and Brent.  You guys deserve some uninterrupted R&R.

Mel.....that trip North sounds like heaven, especially the part about training it all the way home.

8ntruck.....you sound exactly like me.  I put medical and dental stuff off, then go bananas all at once.  Always enjoy the Doc and Dentist chastising me while they are violating my body.  Double torture.

Ray......didn't you mention you were in the hunt for a digital camera so you could share with us pics of those beautiful smog covered California vistas taken during one of your walks?  Bet someone on the POT has one lying around that they don't use any more.

DougDG......re too high ebay prices, I agree.  Must be you and I have discriminating tastes in trains and the rest of the world is out to take advantage of us.

MikeC......look at the bright side of things.  Your legs are still intact.  Many more hand injuries and you will need to be spoon fed or use a straw..

Time for a Grandpa update from JimSP.  Think about now he needs some Grecian Formula to stem the tide of greying hair.

Wonder what became of Fife the last few days, or did I miss his posts?  Hopefully he is still in the hunt for a yacht on which to enetertain us.  And Wes should be neck high in boxes with a honey do list requiring more pc memory just to keep track of all of the stuff his better half keeps discovering in the new digs.  By the time the shop folks finish swapping out the HD ignition, Rich's bike will be a classic.

Sorry if I missed any of you guys this time around.

Later,

Jack

Good late morning from Southern Ohio

A quick lunch of leftover chicken pot pie a visit to the pot then back to work.  Lots of stuff to do before leaving tonight.

I received the 715 car carrier I won on ebay.  Nice car and works well.  I may just leave it as is and not refurbish it.  Like I have time for a project!

Buckeye & Wes – I am working on the bride about going to York this fall.  It looks like a GO!

Got to go.  May God bless

Jim
