Morning all. Grey and cold here - what a surprise. Here's a transcript of a true-life event that happened this morn as the bride drove me to the train station.  Her: "I won't give you your anniversary gift until Saturday."  Me: "uh um er."

Gee, guess I have to get her something.

Mike, glad you're still with us...

Jack, Dennis, RT, it's a deal! Construction on the garage-dorm-layout building should begin 'soon'. We'll have to arrange the appliance-and-sports-watching schedule.

One 'solution' to Somalian piracy would be to convoy the shipping - removes most of the targets and concentrates the defenders. It would very difficult to organize because of the sheer volume of ships, nationalities involved, and the reluctance of shippers and insurers - which impacted convoying in every naval conflict for the past 300 years. LOL. You also need safe 'pooling' areas on both sides of the threat area to gather the ships and escorts - which is lacking in this part of the world.

Brent, I admit it. I'm in awe of the money involved in pro-sports - and college sports for that matter. Wish I had some of it. It's what the market bears I guess. And if folks stop going, like after the baseball strike, they'll have to work again to get them back. The Sox do offer some v. affordable deals on Monday eve and in the upper deck.

Good Mornin', Ya'll,

Some great topics and observations expressed so well.

Brent......re the Somali pirates.  Personally, I feel you hit some nails on the head.

I think if each of us lived abroad for a while and got to witness unvarnished other cultures outside our own, other governments, and other economies (or lack thereof), we might have a different opinion on the causes and solutions to this Somali issue, and others.  This immediate situation was settled by force, perhaps appropriately.  But there has been and will be more, use of force or no.  Pure desperation and the will to survive of some, and the greed of others taking advantage of that desperation and hopelessness.

Before I got married I lived in Spain for a while.  While there, and at the advice of my father, I took time off to experience the hinterland in the middle of nowhere.  I got a taste of poverty, and it certainly was not what we call poverty.  I also got a taste of another country's take on social justice and opportunity.

A dirty and ragged woman in a backwater town approached me holding her infant.  The child had a distended belly (severely malnourished) with sunken eyes and covered in sores.  The woman begged me to take her baby.  That pretty much summed up the state of life in that small town and others I visited.  And that snapshot in my mind has haunted me to this day.  I may not like some things that are going on here in the USA, but as my old man said time and again, "Our life here sure beats the hell out of most of the rest."

A friend of mine joined us for Easter dinner, and we all wandered into a discussion of the use of force right after the breaking news announced the final confrontation and the freeing of the merchant marine Captain.  The friend had worked for a major pharmaceutical outfit and spent a couple of years spread between Guatemala, Brazil, and Venezuela.  Different countries.  Same observations as I stated above.

Just food for thought.  My take is that while force works situationally, I don't see it solving anything long term.  You are merely moving the underlying problem around.  And no, I don't see a cure in our lifetime if ever.  So my take is that each of us should continue to vote our will.  And help those we can, one person at a time.  If that is just a member of our own family, that works for me.

Jack   My 2 cents

IF IT WON'T COME LOOSE BY TAPPING ON IT, DON'T TRY TO FORCE IT. USE A BIGGER HAMMER.

BRENT, gotta disagree with you on the teams paying taxes to the state.  With the Pirates, Steelers and Penguins venues being owned by tax payers,70%,  Pittsburgh Public Schools and Allegheny County don't get a penny of property taxes from them, forgoing a total of $21 million a year.there is no revenue.  As far as the rest of the 12+ million people in the state, these teams don't lower our school taxes provide health or medicare, do nothing for our faltering infrastucture, etc. etc.  We can go back and forth on this issue and yes you will still have your opinion and me mine.

Jack, I have been abroad.  Spain is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been.  Saw the poverty of the gypsies.  Also been to Africa.  The filth and poverty make even the most destitute areas of this country seem like paradise.  Not sure of the solutions to the underlying causes of piracy, but know that it is wrong.  I think to put armed security on a number of ships will deter the tide of piracy.  Also think that the UN is worthless and another functioning body would better handle the conditions in both the Balkans and Somolia.

As for some of the other subjects we have discussed here, already made my opinion known, and will not restate.  Just happy that we have a place to share our thoughts and concerns.  Doesn't make any of us more right or wrong than any other.  Good to have critical thought.  I am pleased to see Colin entering a law enforcement career.  Although, I would be pleased to see him in the military too.

Long day here as some of the cases will be protracted due to complexity.  Just wanted to stop by and say hello to the pot.  Hope that everyone has a blessed day.  And thanks to Doug for adopting me.

Dennis

Morning from Town Hall.  Early meeting.  Now to go pickup couch and recliner for lake house.  Then head that way.  Spend a few days there.  Work to do on pontoon boat and some other things.   Think the rain has gone for a few days. Garden looking great.  Chat later.

Now that I have put you all to sleep with my solution to world problems, I feel compelled to put some balance in my contribution to the POT.

MikeC.....was glad to hear that most of the recent challenges have been resolved or mitigated for you.  I stated perhaps too irreverantly to you a few months back that if you left the POT we would all take a road trip, camp out on your front lawn, and pickett, or some similar nonsense, until you resumed posting.  I meant no disrespect to you or an insensitivity to your situation.  My apologies.

Re the obscene sports figure's salaries and ticket prices that have priced the masses out of the ballpark......we have met the enemy, and it is us.  Nothing will drive down the price of admission, concessions, and salaries except empty seats and a price resistant buying public.  BTW.....Red Sox ownership, prior to this season, froze the price of concessions at Fenway for 2009 at the 2008 levels and implemented the lowest INCREASE in ticket prices in recent memory.  Ain't enough for this boy to budge from the sofa and the TV.

Colin......what a great post!  Long time no read from you.  Was glad to see you dialing in so positively on your future.  Thumbs Up  Sadly, though, as another poster said, women will inevitably put a real dent in your train interests for a couple of decades as it had for too many of us.  Sad

Dennis.....another of my Dad's (RIP) predictions from the 1990s for my lifetime.  We will revert to a more European style of life where families and extended families pool resources and live under the same roof to retain a standard of living and to provide for our elderly in a more compassionate and cost-effective manner.  But for the life of me I can't figure out why my 87 year old FIL and 86 year old MIL don't want to move in with me and the wife. Smile,Wink, & Grin

Patrick......DougM has given this mass adoption of us the green light.  But he hasn't worked out how he is going to feed all of us.  You and the Chief will need to jump on your John Deeres and come up to help him plant a huge garden, set up some corrals for livestock, and establish an area on his property for the piggery and the chicken coups.  We'll arrange the permits with the local Crystal Lake authorities for the permits that will be required for the cattle drive through the center of town to his place.  We'll be setting up a manure business to help him defray some of the costs.

Rich.....could your ignition news possibly mean that you will soon be blasting without fear of breakdown around the "In God We Trust" state?  If so, we are promoting you with your bike to the position of "ramrod" in the aforementioned cattle drive.  When he gets wind of this cattle drive, Rowdy Yates (Clint Eastwood) will be proud of you and may be persuaded to autograph the tank on your bike.

Brutus.....I suspect the recent funky smell in the Tardis wasn't manure from Patrick's shoes.  It might have been from, as another pointed out, residual methane gas from all of the Easter dinner concoctions.

Hope everyone has a great day.  Later, gang.

Jack

Hi Gang,

Checking in from the TCA Museum.  Still cataloging photographs.  Hope everyone is having a great day.  It has been raining here for the second straight day, NOT complaining, we need it as we are still way behing in rain for the year.  It is supposed to clear up for the next three days and due to hit the mid 70s on Saturday, the first in a long time.

Here's my current dilemma re: ticket prices to baseball, et al, we have tickets for the Twins vs Toronto in MPLS for Saturday, shouldn't we have received a reduced price ticket since we are playing a non American team in an original American sport?  Something seems amiss, I wonder what Abner Doubleday would say.

Hello all.  I was notified via email to post this question here instead.  I turned on my TV and heard a loud pop and then smelled something burning.  I unplugged everything and looked up the problem on google.  Found a lot of people saying it was some sort of capacitor that is always charged as long as the tv is plugged in and wouldnt be from overuse/wear and tear.  Is this prob the case?  I was hoping some of the electronic gurus on here could help me out.  Cant seem to find a solid answer anywhere else.

 Thanks.

you or someone asked a very simular question out on the front of the forum and they were told to take it to someone that fixes TV as it is near imposible to to determain whats wrong over the internet. Basicly they were saying its like buying a car over the phone that you never have seen all they can tell you is what might be the problem unless you get someone there to check it out and tell you your wasting your time here as it could be other items also. It would be just guessing whats wrong at the best. Sorry I know we all hope theres a simple fix to something we sank some big bucks into.

Good Evening All

Another day is gone never to return. The temp reached 60 today.

Our "pot" friend Charlie stopped by on his way home from work. We had a short chat but it was getting late so off he went. The only train that ran tonite was the new Williams F3s and that was just a demo run.

Happy tax day all ! Grumpy

To put myself into a better frame of mind I went ahead and preordered the "Grim Reaper Gateman", wanted to order the add-on cars for the Hogwarts but just could not justify that price. I'll just wait til I can get the cars from a set break-up on E-Bay, at a reasonable price of course. Sigh

Passed by a local "Tea Party" while I was out running around, of course I had to show my support, honking horn & Thumbs Up.

Kinda pooped out, helped a friend move a pool table, will check in later. Coffee sippin' time to try and stay awake a little longer.

P.S. Had I known there was going to be a "Tea Party" in town I'd have made my self available to be there with them. Angry  Grumpy

 Morning to all,

Up extra early today.  I feel a bit of allergy/sinus stuff going on. Taking my allergy meds but the pollen count is on overload, even with all the rain we've had.   Sleep was made more dfficult by the Mrs. Zzz, she was really snoring and once the buzzsaw woke me I could not get back to sleep.   Hope we see the sun today. Supposed to clear up and get windy with lots of sun this afternoon, right now it is so foggy I can barely see the mailbox from the kitchen window and it's only 15 yards away.  Up so early that I beat the newspaper delivery guy, the paper isn't even here yet.

Looking forward to a few days off next week for York.  I don't really even have a long shopping list and of course the finance department is a little lighter after purchasing the standard gauge set. I gotta lay off that tinplate stuff, but those bright colored engines and passenger cars just call to me.  I am going to pick up a couple of transformers.  I need a little CW or MTH Z transformer for my nephew's loop.  The 1033 I gave him is acting flaky. Will swap it out and then get it repaired for my own use as a back up.  I think I will also pick up an MTH Z750 or Z1000 for use with the standard gauge set.  It is a PS2 sound system and requires a series of horn and bell button combinations to access the sounds. None of my old PW transformers have the capacity for that.  If any coffee pot members who are venturing to York have one they are interesting in selling, send me a PM, maybe we can make a deal.  Save me from beating feet all over the fairgrounds looking for one and give you a little extra train $$$ for the meet.

Well... the exercise bike is calling my name, so I better get going.

Have a great day.

Good morning all,

IIABSDISEI with temps in the 60s.  I played soccer last night for hour and a half with the high school kids.  As Trace Adkins would sing about, "I had my game on".  No goals, but lots of touches and good play.  I used the one advantage I have (body weight) to simply keep people from the ball.  It was a good night, but my legs were sore.  I also did weights at the YMCA prior to that.  Jack, no need to apologize.  I clearly understood the intent of support.  Work was busy again (always).  I had the regular fare on the dining car this morning for breakfast before sending it to "Points East".  Beacon will be lit and I can drive tonight (and be sober as well!)  Prayers and thoughts going out to those who need them.  I hope eveyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mornin' Fellas.

Well the best laid plans of mice and men... I need to pickup a few boards to continue work on the layout and when I stopped at 84 Lumber last night they were closed (I arrived at 6:01pm and they close at 6:00pm Banged Head - makes it hard to support the local establishments when they close before you can get there!). Hope to stop tonight - traffic should move better since it isn't raining today.

Mitch - sent you an email concerning the transformers

Brutus - I'm feeling a bit better. The stomach has settled down, but the voice is still not the same, and now I have a small cough and a tickle in my lungs... really drives me nuts. Have to get the track powered up again so I can test the engine. The crack in the shell isn't very noticable so if the engine works I will probably just leave it alone - no sense making it worse. Just ticked me off that I KNEW I should have moved it (thought about it when I crawled under the layout and figured - it will be ok). Should know better!

Shipped The Rare & Expensive I <3 OH boxcar off to JohnF last night, said it should arrive today - must have put it on a boat as with all the rain we've had it could get there faster? Smile

Morning all!

Took 4-yo to pediatric eye specialist yesterday am.  4-months to get an appointment.  4-hours long.  Angry  (30-minutes of actual examination)  Funniest thing was seeing signs all over that said "No food or Drink in waiting or exam rooms".  Right.  I saw no one heeded it.  By the end 4-yo was begging to go home.  They did have a play structure for the kiddies.  It's in the past now.

Brutus/Charlie/SJ/RT:  Sorry about missing the late night chats...I sure miss them.  Been wiped out in the evening of late.

Supposed to be a nice day today...(upper 60's)  Will probably end up at the park with the girls.

Good Morning from Blueberryhill....

It is a cloudy 45 degrees. Suppose to get sunny and go up to 70 today. Ground is soaked with all the rain we have had lately. We need the sunshine.

Today is a busy day. Wife is going grocery shopping into Cambridge. Gas is still locked at $2.00 a gallon. It is too high , according to the price of a barrel of oil.

I need to spend some time in the train room. It needs a good cleaning. Trains are getting dusty, again.

Dining car was here and we had breakfast. Then, it departed for "Points West".

Y'all have a great Thursday.
