Today I received a box about 13" wide and 12" high. It contained an assortment of buildings that were available on the market back in the mid 60's and early 70's. There was also a 40' bulkhead flat with a lumber load and a gift wrapped item. That gift wrapped item is down at my parent's place so I can't get my mitts on it until Christmas. I love the old houses. Some of them have interior walls. It's gonna be fun finding places for them on the layout.

Cold? I can give you cold. Right now it is -24C with a -31C(-24F) windchill. It has been sunny though, when it isn't dark which is most of the time.
Didn't do much tonight, just watched a couple of DVD's, one shot by Newton Rossiter with lots of NKP berkshires, DM&IR Yellowstones, etc. I also watched one on the restoration of CPR's Hudson #2816.
Well time to gather up Pippa and put her on the bed for the night. She sleeps beside me which is ok as I found that she stays put for the night that way and rarely gets me up.

Everything is now completed for THAT, she's getting four articles...she'll be a happy little camper. I've already got a bunch of leads to cover, maybe she'll call-off the "facetime" tomorrow. I can always run down to the office while I'm out and about this weekend to drop-off the photos. *crossing fingers*

ROBBY P & JEFF: I had a sneaking, nagging suspicsion THAT was a ROBBY P RailBox... fantastic as always. And, I'll admit it JEFF, I was skeptical about latex paint, but you've shown it w**ks just fine. 36 degrees 'eh? I'm aching, longing, yearning for it to get back UP to 36 degrees!!!! The roads are pretty much all plowed...but the snow turned to ice, and the salt mix won't do anything until the temps get back to around 20...in a few days.
JIM: Thanks Pal (for liking my writing), I get by...never claimed to be a "writer," kinda got thrown into it. I did get two big "attaboy" notes forwarded today by Mr. Boss...hope he keeps THAT in mind if/when he looks at Christmas bonuses...
ULRICH: You are a far, far, far more patient man than I. I would be going nuts in THAT seminar...or 'indoctrination,' or whatever. Having some self-appointed do-gooder telling me what/how/when to eat goes against my self-reliant/personal liberty/freedom/personal responsibility loving nature. I'd likely tell them WHERE they could "stuff" their stuff. Of course, I'd be escorted out the door soon after... Just out of curiosity, what can they do to you if you "fail" the course by having an outburst of common sense???

Another w.o.t. day at the seminar. Today, I am supposed to learn how to write a CV using MSWord - this is not a configuration variable, in case you are a DCC user ... Unfortunately, I cannot load my track planning program to this computer here, I could make good use of the time. So it will be another day of grin and bear .
Chris - I ain´t no patient man, no Sir! I have learned to keep my mouth shut. Once you are part of our social security system, this is the way to go. If you don´t cooperate, they reduce your "allowance" by 30 % and man, that hurts! Most people get seriously ill after a little while, as living under a constant threat is no fun at all.

Trying to get more done on the house in the evenings so the HD list gets whittled down. Starting to look more seriously at a shelf layout in the den and with a nicely finished front, it might just fly. Priority is still to finish up the basement and stow the boxes of "stuff" we still haven't sorted through. I for one advocate the use of another dumpster as most of the "stuff" hasn't seen the light of day in decades. How many plastic travel mugs do we really need? We have found enough hats to start another collection even though a large laundry basket full got tossed after the fire (smoke and scorch marks). We'll see how all this plays with the CFO.

Good morning. It's 40 and cloudy. The high will be near 50 with rain.I've been looking at the houses I got yesterday and noticing the shortcuts manufacturers used back then to get a good looking house into a given space. The doors are all HO Scale height but are narrow and the structure is pushed together from side to side as if it were in a vise. When set into an area with like sized structures this made the area seem a little larger. After all, who cared overall how the houses looked, the emphasis was on the trains. I took photos of some of the houses yesterday with an auto set in front. They look like modern offerings with a 1/64 matchbox car in front. The car is however 1/87 scale. I have a couple of old scale size cars from the early 70's and they're made to the same smallish size as the houses, which seem to be caught between HO and TT size. I have other HO structures that are like this and they were bought many years ago. It seems that our houses have gotten larger over the years as modelers demanded more accuracy in scale of not only the trains but the autos and structures as well.

Rob - the house looks great - if it's too contrasty, maybe you could do a sort off-white wash over the siding part? Could tone it down some of the contrast. I'm guessing that by this morning you'll be going around and breaking the ice in the water troughs, though, right?
Jeff, it sounds like your folks are (indirectly) doing like I've heard is done around this time of year - hiding the presents at another home, so they don't get 'peeked' at early. Looks like you'll have about as much fun as a kid at Christmas, with the new stuff. Hopefully, your foot will be healing up enough after Christmas for MRR'ing fun.
Robby, yeah, I was figuring on getting the hopper's steps tended to - as I said, maybe over my Christmas vacation. Then on to some more weathering practice of my own, and I have some track to finish wiring up, too.
Ulrich, good point there on the CV. (chuckle) Even if you could load your layout design software on the computer at the seminar, you'd still have to save any good plans you came up with back onto a disk for taking home. Maybe your Christmas break isn't too far away...? Oh, wanted to tell you, I heard Chloe telling Vinnie before she left this morning that she has orderd another LKAB mug to replace that one in pieces.
Chris, that about the snow/ice deal with salt is something I'm familiar with. Maybe you'll get some sunny days to warm up the surface enough that it will run off the edges of the roads.
JR, you could pitch it to your wife about disposing of the clothing as: "Honey, think of all the people who don't have hats, and with it being the colder time of year, we could help them out with all these extra hats [, pants, old sweaters, etc.] that we have..." Best wishes on the shelf layout in the den - that wouldn't involve much space, so I would think that could be an easier sell to the CFO.

It's a nice warm 18°F outside here in the Finger Lakes with a predicted high of 23°F later. Only got a dusting of what they call Lake Effect overnight. A bit more of the same all day. I consider Geneva is lucky. Warsaw, NY got 18" of the stuff, and Rush (where our museum is) has 6". A place called Colden, NY has between 22" and 23". Lake Effect, once going just keeps taking moist air off the lakes and dumping it as sn*w in a particular location untill the wind shifts. So it is possible to get several feet of snow in a couple of days.
Looks like a good day to w**k down cellar on the layout.

Alright I am not going to plan anything today. Nothing. Not a thing. Other than work at 5. Every time I plan stuff so I can into the trainroom, something comes up and I never get there. So today I've planned nothing. Well other than unload the truck at about 11:30. And some laundry has to be done. Oh and sometime I must bring a table up from downstairs for Brenda's "we offer you supposed discounts on crappy overpriced jewelry so we can get in your home so we can sell your friends crappy overpriced" jewelry party. For which I thankfully will be working. Poor dog.

LSWrrJeff, I noticed the same thing as I tried to place an older church into my downtown area next to a Walther’s Benson’s 5 & Dime. The Walther’s building towered over the (Atlas?) stone church. As far as the door goes, back in the 1940-1960ish the front doors were smaller than they are today. I tried to install a new back door in my Girlfriend’s 1912 house and found I needed to cut and re-frame the wall to accept the new door. On my house the space for a storm door is 4” narrower than a standard storm door.

A lot of the morning was spent working on my kitchen drain. The coupling that connects the sink drains to the drain pipe had corroded and this morning it busted with a resounding pop. In removing it I found that the trap also was on the verge of giving up the ghost. So I needed to replace the top coupling and the entire trap assembly. Finding the trap assembly was easy. It's 1 1/4" inside diameter and is readily available. The top coupling on the other hand was a horse of a different color. It's 1 1/2" at the top and reduces down to 1 1/4" at the bottom. Guess what I couldn't find anywhere. A 1 1/2" to 1 1/4" reducer! It seems next to nobody makes this piece of hardware anymore. Little wonder being that it came out of a trailer that's almost 60 years old. I ended up having to fashion one from a 1 1/2" connector and a 1 1/4" connector with a short compression sleeve in between. There was one place where I had to glue the pipes together with lots of LockTite glue and clamped them off with hose clamps. They'll not be coming apart any time soon. The assembly has been tested and no leaks were detected.

Jeff as we say here - A bodge is as good as a proper repair. You can frequently get stepdown reducers in steel from your local autoparts exhaust section or in the radiator hose section. Sounds though like you've got it permenently repaired. Later, J.R.
