Large coffee in a  SOGGY SOUTHERN mug, please & thanks. It's a nasty, raw day here. Cold wind & rain. Yuck!

Wife has been at the hospital keeping an eye on her Dad. Also watching her mom and taking her to see him. She probably will spend tonight at the hospital. Hopefully they will release him tomorrow. It's going to be a long month for my wife as they prepare a forced move into a more appropriate assisted living facility.

Painted the first of two NuComp trailers. Need to touch up some sloppy pinstriping. Will start assembling the second kit soon.

Have a great day Y'all.

CN Charlie,  thank you for your input. “I've been reading the talk about soldering and must say that I first did it with a lot of trepidation”,  ah yeah..  I don’t want to go through $30 bucks worth of track to say.. “Ah .. I think I got it now~”  I have a wife I have to answer to.. “ah yes my snookems”  “yes.. dear~” in a Elmer Fudd fashion.  She hates that.   Todd, “(chuckle) Keith- I hope I didn't make it sound horrible. I didn't mean too. I'm no instructor, but I have taught a few things in Uncle Sams little mess. I usually point out the worst and when people try it they find out it's not that bad, but at least they expect the bad….”  I agree.. but as CN Charlie used a word well, .. I read your posts with trepidation.  Every time I was gluing that dang building.. your ‘Ode’ to Glue and all the mistakes.. keep ringing in the back of my mind.   Actually I hear your humor in your instructions.  But getting back to the soldering.. lol, I think I’m going to look for a low wattage soldering gun.  If I can find a small one..  one with a small tip,  that would be a great start.  But if I have to go lets say with a Weller 30 watt.. aside from all the other helpful insights and careful instructions.. (Ray especially) I’m getting at the basics here.. but it would seem..  lol .. that… 1.      Low Temp.2.      Rosin.. a must.. to really let the solder flow and get in there.3.      Apply heat and watch wait for the solder to flow (assuming you’ve added Rosin.Ray,  I looked at my mail, I couldn’t find any attachment.  I was going to ask Jeanne if she could find it.. but forgot, and she’s off at work now.  Are you sure you sent an attachment?  Heck you’ve already shown us so much as it is.  Could we be missing something here.?  How about the solder?  Is there a softer mix that gives it more flexibility?  I went back to find Sawyers youtube on soldering.. but couldn’t find it.  It looked so simple.   Today’s the day, I go out and buy a soldering gun.Jim.. “Keith- thanks for the length of your yard - now, how wide is it, and what brand of turnouts”  Ah Jim.. if you knew how many times I’ve moved these turnouts here and there.  But as you know.. I wanted to learn something here.. so I’ve been reading some stuff.. applying what I’ve read and what I want on this staging area.  Let me tell ya .. Reality Check.  I’ve come to several conclusions.. and so.. here they are.  1.      I am that point where the joiners are applied… the only real way to see some continuity and form in the rails.2.     I’ve come to the conclusion, in order to make use of all available space,  I’ll have to build dioramma’s for optimum spacing.3.     Placement of the buildings is extremely important.  If I want this and that, well I just have to see how many pieces of the pie cut into the allowed space.4.     Not only the placement of the buildings.. this morning I’ve already pulled out one of my wooden stencils to actually see the ‘throw’ of the turn in relation to the actually placement of the Station and glass canopy’s straight approach.   Yeah.. I still want that glass canopy in there.. lol.  I spent a few days working on it.5.      Today I shall look and probably buy a soldering gun.  Heck, I’ve already have the Soldering Stand with magnifier~!     But in answer to your question,  I’m going with the 6 inch Atlas.. as many as my options give me.Ulrich,   “I have decided to postpone the discussion with Petra until next year. No need to rush things at a time, when we still have plenty to do to get settled in our new "home”   so true.. but heck you can still plan.  I know , I know.. you haven’t gotten her to agree on something or anything.. such as your son’s bedroom.. and / or the size of the layout.  Started me thinking of how I would do something of that sort.. getting the wife to agree on something.  I told my son once.. “Just mention it to her, drop the thought.. but agree on nothing”  Then a few days later .. mention it again.. and use the words.. “I mentioned something about it the other day~”   Then say something.. “Well .. what do you think?”  “Get her involved son, let her take ‘ownership’ of the situation.. see if that works”  “You can always come back the next day.. and say.. “Well what did you come up with”.. (as if they still isn’t a good solution) .. lol.  On the other hand Ulrich.. I’d .. me  myelf,  I’d be more likely to come up with some ‘off the wall’ idea.. literally and figuratively.. lol.. “I’m going to build track.. along the wall here.. raise it up here.. above our heads. So no one bumps their head.. run the track down above our heads here.. make this turn and go down the hallway… at that point .. Jeanne would be looking for a solution.  Now on another front: You could always talk to your son ahead of time..  he knows.. what you want him to say..  so the next time all 3 of your are together.. you bring up the subject and say.. “Son, what do you think?” and once again have those two take ownership of your situation.  Never give up.. I use sayings like.. “ Yeah~ I know that.  But lets talk about how to make it work”  Good luck Ulrich.  Of course you.. could always wait for some time as you said.Jeff, keep us posted when you return.  Thanks keith

Just got back from the Deer Creek hospital. I was their first ever patient in their wound care program. As I said, it was a lot of the usual poking and prodding. There was also mention made of a wound vacuum. I guess I'll be finding out about that at some point in the near future.

 Afternoon all!

Zoe I'll have another bowl of Turkey soup......  And a RBF!

Kieth, I sent the file as an attachment under my signature.  I just sent it again and included the text of the handout in the email.  It should be sitting in your mailbox right now.  Good luck!

Jeffrey, THAT sounds ah, um, well, ineresting?  A wound vacuum????  If it works and heals up your foot I am all in favor of it.

Any of you know if there is a way to send an attachment using the forum email client????

I've been putting up the candle lights in the windows for Advent/Christmas today.  Have the woodstove fired up and the house is toasty warm.

Time to get back to doing the laundry, so I'll catch you all later!

Good Morning (it is still morning, right?) afternoon Zoe - I'll have a BLT, some cheesey fries and a D&RGW mug of hot cocoa, please 'n' thankyou! Oh yes, and a RBF for dessert, too. Thanks!

LSWrr
Coffee is your last vice?  When did you give up sniffing glue?

 Laugh

Wet, damp and coldish in Cape Girardeau today, and they say tomorrow the wind will pick up some. Oh, goodie! But at least so far, it looks like the biggest part of the white stuff is heading more up north of us, out Chris and Todd and Jerry and Inch's way (sorry, guys...). Chris, the weatherguessers this morning were showing a map with 6-14" marked on it around western Iowa (and it was that sn*w they were talking about, I'm afraid). Might want to move a stack of wood inside for the woodstove. If you get that much, the door might be blocked a bit, if you catch my 'drift'. Whistling And I hate to think what this thing will do with lake effect for those near the Great Lakes! Shock Ah, where is global warming when you really need it?..

Jeff, sure hope your feet lose 'the heat' really soon - that (no doubt) kinda s**ks big-time. [yow!] It would be better for you on a couple of counts if the numbness returns - a) you'll feel better, and b) you can get back to some layout w**k. AngelAngel Hope that 'wound vaccuum' does the trick on helping your foot get back to its more usable self. Thumbs Up

Rob, you need your FIL's doctors to get things figured out and fixed (and then get yourself and your wife's stuff checked out too), REALLY SOON. Have your family on the AngelAngel list.

Yep, CN Charlie - if you're hosting, there won't be much of any time for MRR'ing till the place clears out, I'm sure. After Christmas you can maybe get back to it. Stay warm up there!

Chris - and Ulrich - if you want a look at that article on the coffee-table RR, just email me. I think I have it somewhere here on the hard drive.. And having enough sn*w to keep everybody at home would probably be the safest route to go, based on some driving I saw years ago in Caruthersville, MO when I was married and lived there. The town is absolutely flat (okay, maybe a foot in vertical difference in the county Wink), and they got a few inches of the white fluffy stuff. People were all over the roads. I grew up in St. Louis, with lots more white Christmases and more hills, so we got used to how to drive safely on sn*w (drive slower, extra careful, and avoid the idiots on the roads with you...).

Ulrich, I guess at least that seminar will get you some exercise getting out of the house to wherever they hold it. On the MRR planning/expansion deal, yeah, maintain a low profile for a while and Petra might mellow out about that. Thumbs Up You could do some planning on the computer (and hide it in a folder where she won't look...).

Galaxy, do you have neighborhood kids you could bribe with some cookies or such (or My 2 cents if absolutely necessary)? Could save your back a bit of hurt.

Todd, I can tell when you're thinking about expanding your RR, I can smell the smoke seeping out your ears...Smile,Wink, & Grin

JR - you've had a pretty good spell with your team's racing. Thumbs Up Way to go, and now you just need to persuade those retired pros to stay retired... Yeah!!

I also liked that comment about the "20-year old with experience" (except mine has more than 20 years of experience, unless we take off for all those various dumb mistakes I've made along the way...).Oops

Keith, that damp and wet cold weather is worse, all right - just ask Barry (he knows about that 'dry cold' up his way. Wink I'm wondering what all that rain will do to those mountains east of BridgeTom, hopefully not those possible mudslides the weatherguessers talked about today.

Ray, I'm sure you are prepared for the white stuff there. You do have your window candles with the drapes pulled back enough from them, right? Don't want any unexpected dashes out of the house in the colder weather you're having up there...

The nasty colder weather today has kept a lot of people at home - only had one call and one walk-in client so far today. At this rate, I could get really good on my computer games by the afternoon...Wink

Prayers for heat that stays on (especially for our more northern Diners - Iowa and north of there), lots of warm blankets and/or quilts, for healing and comfort and helpful neighborhood kids who will shovel the white stuff off your walks/driveway.

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau (still only 41 F/ 5 C)

Good afternoon everybody....Chloe? tripple cheeseburger 'n fries please and thank-you...yep at the RC.

Well, we got THAT white stuff which falls out of the winter sky. Not too much of it yet, but enough to shut down the state of Iowa. Loving Wife got a snow day as the college she works at closed, will again tomorrow for sure. Today is the right fist dumping snow, tomorrow is the left packing lots and lots of wind to blow, drift, and generally blizzardize us. The weather speculationists have everybody so panicked about this one, even the National Guard is on standby to send HUMVEES up and down I-80 to grab people out of their ditched cars. The media has been saying for 2 or 3 days "if you get stuck, you're going to be there for a long time" then detail-out a survival kit. Good grief. And people wonder why I HATE winter so much.

LEE: Huh. I guess I never looked at being 40 quite THAT way... I've thought more about Harry Chapin's description from "W*O*L*D" "...feeling all of 45, going on 15..."

KEITH: Interesting tales there Pal... GLAD the doggie CPR worked! A few years ago, to combat the Red Cross, we (community college affiliated with the Heart Association) were going to offer pet first aid/CPR. The lead CPR instructor was adamant (sp?) under absolutely no circumstance was she going to go mouth-to-snout...not even on a stuffed animal/doggie simulator. I've heard of firefighters resuscitating dogs and cats, Grinnell (Iowa) Fire and Midwest Ambulance got a critter "save" just last week in fact. I shudder to think about thinking about having to do THAT to Mr. Rerun...but wouldn't hesitate. As for extracting the chunk of hot dog...I don't know if you realize just how lucky you were. THAT is one of the WORST things to get caught in an airway. A toddler died in Cedar Rapids about 10-12 years ago from one. It practically glued itself in place.

RAY: "Candle lights!" CRAP!!!!!! THAT's what I keep forgetting to get/do. Last year, the First United Methodist Church in North Liberty was distributing electric candles with a green bulb. The goal was to have them displayed in windows, in honor and rememberance of firefighters, cops, EMTs/paramedics, and the military. It was expanded to encompass all healthcare providers as well. Well, I got one, but the bulb is deceased. I keep forgetting to grab a pack of 'em. Banged Head

Welp, I guess I oughta get back to w**k, I'm editing/processing/prepping photos from the weekend for THAT. I "should" get some of the writing out of the way too while I'm at it.

Have a good, SAFE rest of the day,

Hey ya'll. RBF, a bacon cheese burger, and a large order of cheese fires for me.

Managed to get the driveshaft in my car after putting in new emergency brake cables. I was gonna put the rug in, but the vacuum's filter is shot so I can't vacuum out the metal fillings from drilling out the rivets from the old cables.

Jim, I managed to piece the ice-machined Gp18 back together. It is missing a small piece at the top fireman's corner of the front pilot, but I gonna file that down so it's a square cutout. Then use that to model pilot cut-outs so I can put on looped coupler cut bars on it that started appearing in the 70s and 80s. Kind of like this unit's: http://www.trainpix.com/bn/EMDORIG/GP9/1761.HTM

Jeff, I'd have to agree with ray, a "wound vacuum" sounds a bit strange, unless it's something like a dry socket...

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Jim and Chris, the candles are electric ones with 4w LEDs.  No noticeable heat at all.  I figured out that running them 12 hours a day for the entire season will cost me something like 21¢ in electricity.... I can keep the drapes closed and not worry.......

We are supoosed to get sno......, ah, some partly cloudy tonight along with some high winds.  Just in time for the Deacons annual Christmas party tomorrow night. Whistling

Catch you later!

Coffee refill, please.

***Jeffrey, sounds like a fancy ShopVac. Probably does about the same thing but at 1000 times the cost.Wink Seriously though, I hope you are getting extra special care being their first patient in that new dept. Have been enjoying your posted pics.

Looks like the Inlaw situation is rapidly progressing towards moving them into the new place. Not sure how my SIL managed it, perhaps being a Lawyer she got the ball rolling extra quickly. We will all be glad when this (hopefully last) move is done.

My wife is fixing to take her dad out of the hospital AMA, to prevent him from getting pneumonia, which often happens to folks who remain in such an environment for long.

Will be in the corner for a bit, trying not to nod off.

JR- Nothing on the car but Raybestos and the #12.  On the trailer I think it says- "Phil Stricklin".  Does that name ring a bell?  BTW, the truck is or darn close to HO while the car is N or smaller as it fits inside thr trailer..

Prayers for all.

Might want to move a stack of wood inside for the woodstove. If you get that much, the door might be blocked a bit, if you catch my 'drift'.

Welp...I would, but no wood stove here, just an old oil-burning furnace and some strategiclly placed space heater units. But, the wind is blowing out of the east at around 20. The east door is the one we use (west door has..."issues," I'll leave it at THAT), so we could, I suppose, get drifted in. When we had the big ice storm a few years back (with the 30 hours of no electricity), we were almost frozen-in.

I'm getting infrequent updates from a friend in SW Iowa...doesn't sound too good, though the speculationists keep "guessing" what this storm will do. The panic has been ratcheted up, now the National Weather-guessing Speculationists service is calling this storm "the strongest."

Crimenently. I guess the only "good" thing about it so far, is it is all snow and wind...no ICE, no freezing rain, no "mix" precipitation.

Life in the midwest...ya gotta love it, I suppose.

Thanks, but I was just stream-of-semiconsciousness ruminating on ideas for ULRICH. He might have a use for it. Maybe Petra would let him have a nicely designed, nice looking piece of furniture which cleverly doubles as a RR.

Back to pondering/cogitating upon a headline for a story I'm w**king on. I interviewed a 19 year old, born and raised in India, moved here, found God (he says God found him), now sings/writes contemporary Christian music. He's even had a CD produced and availible. Sunny Singh if anybody wants to look him up, Amazon and iTunes has his stuff.

And people think this job is easy.... "Singh Sings!" too obvious, tacky, nauseating...

Hey chloe; jsut a hot chocolate and bacon cheeseburger for me, please and thanks.

Nother slow day at school today. Wet, cold, and dreary; not even a thought or emotion provoking day, just a dreary, dismal day, lol. I've got some homework, but shouldn't be tough. Just want to finish this week, get through the exams next week, and then I've got 2 weeks off of school for Christmas. Whoo-hoo!

Good Evening diner patrons--

Damp and raw here tonight. Our weatherguessers just issued a weather advisory for us that involves a bit more rain than snow--but we will get those winds from the south at up to 90kmh. Gonna be interesting around here-----oh, and total snow accumulation gonna be about 10cm---maybe--

We had lotsa sun until this afternoon---when we were at the mall---the fellow I took to the mall got the supplies he needed and we watched the people at the mall in the food court for a bit. Took him home and then betook myself to the grocery store myself and found some more plastic storage tubs to store more RR stuff in----Now I'm sitting here waiting for our cold, wet, miserable rain---Sigh

Chloe, I'll have a triple burger with fries and gravy and a large RBF pleaseDinner---I'll be at the RC for a bit--Smile,Wink, & Grin

Any argument carried far enough will end up in Semantics--Hartz's law of rhetoric Emerald. Leemer and Southern The route of the Sceptre Express Barry

I just started my blog site...more stuff to come...

Flip -"Hut" Strickland drove for Bobby Allison Racing after Bobby retired. The car number 12 was always associated with Allison and he used it until he disbanded the team. Ryan Newman now uses that number. I've met Bobby Allison (and Gary Nelson who was his crew chief when they were at Digard Racing in the 80's) and he was a real down to earth gentleman.

Jim - We are in amature (vintage and historic) racing so the retired pros are not going anywhere soon (no rules about being a current pro and driving vintage either).

Vincent - brush and pan will do it too mate.

Had to run to Essex and pick stuff up plus move trucks and trailers around when I returned so I'm ready for a coffee and a slice of pie before I head to the museum and MRR stuff there. Catch ya Later, J.R.

The wound vac looks an aquarium air pump. but instead of pumping air in it pumps it out and forces the wound to close from within, thereby speeding healing. I have to weight pros and cons of it before I decide whether or not to use one. On the one hand it would help speed the healing but on the other hand there are prevalent problem with diabetics that could make it dangerous.

G'dEvening, Chloe - I'll have the roast beef (medium), baked potato with sour cream, chives and butter, and do you have any asparagus? Great, I'll have some of that also, with a glass of one of your excellent Finger Lake wines, too, please. And after dinner, I'll have a slice of apple pie (on a plate, yes...) with a scoop of French vanilla ice cream on top. Thanks!

Vincent, that was a funny looking front end in that photo of the GP18 you linked to. I like the bell on the front, too.

The rest of my w**k day was exceptionally quiet - I didn't see any other people after my one walk-in client in the morning. Talked with our intern who's learning how to w**k crisis with Jason and myself, and had my paperw**k ready so I could leave on time, for a change. Smile

Ray, got the clinic notes - thanks! I converted it over to pdf (used Neo Office). I should see about maybe getting some of those LED candles - need to see if they're easy to find locally.

Rob, glad to hear your family's getting some progress on the move. Hey, if your SIL is an attorney, all she'd have to mention would be that she is an attorney, and that would likely soften up the most resistant administrator/bureaucrat... Whistling Never hurts to have some 'legal clout'! On the MP, did you get your doctor to go for it, or change back to - what was it? - your previous doctor? Hope that goes well for you. AngelAngel

Chris, I recall one winter somewheres in my married life where there was some kind of melt-off from the roof that dripped during the day onto the stoop outside of one door, and by morning there was this icy wedge behind said door...Shock Hey, no problem on that coffee table railroad - though I recall that I think it was in iNvisible scale in the original article... Stay warm up there; does your oil furnace w**k if the electric goes out? Hope so! Hey, you don't think THAT editor might think the headline is so tacky that it's funny? Smile,Wink, & Grin

Hang in there, and wind up the semester, Sawyer! Yeah!!

Jeff, be cautious about that vaccuum, particularly if you may be the first person for your clinic to get to use it. Blindfold

BridgeTom - it's time to order those cougars to keep your deer population in check - I ordered mine! The W-S cougar set is on sale in the Walthers flyer this month. Yeah!!

I'll be at the window booth having my dinner and watching the last switcher for the evening. Besides, there's more room at the booth, since the RC is usually pretty full. Wink Prayers for our Diners (or loved ones) healing up, or those dealing with the nasty weather tonight and tomorrow (and however long THAT storm takes to move its way through your area). I did hear on the news today someone compared this storm to the one in the late 1970's that resulted in the Edmund Fitzgerald sinking. (Any Gordon Lightfoot fans in here?). Anyway, stay warm everybody!

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Barry, look at the weather radar, in about 20 min I’m going to be hit with that storm coming out of the south, guess what; you’re next.

Jeff, they didn’t try to glue it shut or paint it with “second skin”?  Those seem to be the new favorites up here.  I hear good things about the second skin application.

They couldn't glue it shut because of the large empty space left inside by the removal of the infected bones. It has to be open enough so they monitor how much tissue is filling in the void. As for the second skin, I've never even heard of it. BTW, I got your Christmas card today. Thanks.

Jeff,

Thought you could use something to read, LOL.  I plan on picking up some decal sheets after the first so think about what you want and I’ll see what I can do.

2 products I highly recommend are mole skin and second skin.  The mole skin is a rolled bandage that you cut to fit the wound, it’s water resistant, padded, and very flexible.  The second skin is like a paint you apply over the wound, it dries fairly quickly and is water proof, flexible, breathable, and tough.  Dorothy’s bull mastiff tore up one of the pads on his paw and we used the second skin, still on the dogs paw after 2 days.  The only drawback to the second skin is your gong to lose some hair when you remove it.  The second skin also comes in pads for larger wounds.

For a foot I would go with the mole skin since it helps avoid further abrasion, unless it’s on the bottom of the foot then I would use the second skin.

Veggie plate (yuck), please.

***Lee, great progress there!

***Jim, because of the FIL's ER visit, we had to cancel our own Doc appointments. Haven't approached her on the MP yet. At least this will give me extra time to prepare a proposal. Just ordered the 2% & 10% Noir glasses and a couple boating type hats for sun protection, required while on the MP. I'm anxious to start on it, as soon as I get a Doc onboard.

Glued all the parts of the second Maxwell Avenue home for wife's layout. Painted the inside with two dark coats, the bricks all darker redish-brown, and weathered the roofs with raw umber washes. Tomorrow I'll glue the porch and porch roof to the main house and it will be ready to place. Oh yea, have to add lights, too.

Have a good night all.

Basically the same thing you did before. Check your PM's. Check your email.

Just a cup of decafe to keep me warm Flo.

Interesting......  The Weather Chanel map for Geneva says it has been snowing for the last hour......  According to the "look outside the window" method of telling what is going on, not even a flake has appeared.........

Hmmmmmmmm?????

have a great night, stay warm, and prayers for all in need!

Good Morning,

Chloe, please, I urgently need coffee to get me eyes open. Thank, you are so kind...

I am attending the seminar again. There is a bloke up front, trying to teach us how to work with a PC. I am trying to make the best out of the situation by visiting the diner and to do some research for my layout "in being". Looks like it will have an "arctic" theme again, but I am not yet decided, whether to pursue my initial ARR ideas in HO scale or go for that great looking WP&Y Mike in Sn3. I just pretend I have that space in Christian´s room ...Smile

Jim - I am still a subscriber to MR (did that in better times), so I have seen that article on the coffee table layout. A nice piece of w*rk. Some 30 years ago, MR ran a similar article on this topic. Whereas it is an excellent ida for someone having no space at all, I find it to have some limitations which I would not be prepared to accept. The key issue is viewing height. Unless you crouch on the floor, you always get a bird´s view to the layout. At 6´5", crouching is not really my thing ...

What I have in mind, is a shelf layout with an average width of 16 - 18" along the 16´ wall in the room, and two or three detachable segments, that can be stored underneath the long part, when my son´s visitung us. This leaves plenty of room for a bed, a desk and some closets for clothing. I am still in the needs for good arguments to get Petra´s approval ... Mischief

It is much too warm for the season, 8 C and wet. The weatherguessers predict tmperatures way below freezing for the weekend, and a lot of that white stuff.

Now the weather outside is frightful   Whistling

HAve a good day!

Good morning, Well the honeymoon is over; 5” of snow between now and Friday Afternoon with wind gusts up to 50 Kts. High tomorrow will be 24F.

Ray, the window is so old fashioned, I’m sure NOAA is using something far more clever than a boring window.

Hope that everyone stays warm and safe Smile
