Well, looks like the switcher has stopped, and Zoe and Chloe are straightening up. So Sign - Welcome to the Diner, and have a mug of your favorite beverage on me! If you forgot anything, the old Diner track is here.

Blessings,

Must have been the quick stop that woke me up so early. Well, since I'm awake, I'll have a coffee in a large UNION PACIFIC mug, please.

Thanks for the suggestions on both creating Kudzu & rusting corrugated alum. Any additional suggestions on the latter will still be appreciated. Thanks!

Have a good day all.

Good Morning All,

I see we actually left our last siding with a bit of space left. I'll have a regular please and one of the well traveled donuts. Spent the last evening w..king on the laptop at home to delete old files and defrag it. see if it does any better soon.

As far as the various comments on distracted driving, I agree and while I do use my cell while driving again, I don't in traffic. When I'm all by myself on the highway, and I keep the calls short, that's one thing, not paying attention in traffic is just asking for it. Long before cell phones and the more idiotic texting while driving there was a whole other range of lunacy. Commuting into New York everymorning for 10 years I saw people shaving, applying makeup, brushing their hair, reading, and later of course driving with the laptop open and propped up on the steering wheel. Add to that a variety of other behaviors - breakdown lane runners,  primal scream therapy, and turning around to talk to the back seat passenger(s) and you can see why I was glad to get a job closer to home. Rt 684 from Brewster to White Plains has become the great training ground for apprentice morons.

Keith - I think the start on weathering the building is good. In particular the white stain is just like what you see for roof runoff stains. Robby's fades are in order for buildings as well as most of the older paints chalk up after a few years and no cleaning. For staining aluminum sheet I'd try some salty water or very dilute muriatic acid to imitate the effects of acid rain on bare sheet galvanized steel. Again a chalky residue over it all also looks the part. Most corrugated steel buildings I've w..ked in also had steel framed windows that ran rust stains down the siding below the window especially at the lower corners. Spraying the windows with flat clear also makes them look like typical neglected windows. Obviously storefronts would usually look well kept, but the backs and sides often don't get much attention and get really scruffy looking.

On the vines I have also used carpenters glue with a bit of brown or gray water based paint added and brushed on the sides of buildings to imitate crawling vines. While the glue is still tacky, add noch leaves and ground foam to the smaller branches. If you want to add additional layers, the fiber mat or scotch brite pads teased apart add depth and look good with ground foam added over. Used in moderation scotch brite pads also make good ground cover crawlers and low bushes. You can get 6" x 9" brown pads at most auto body suppliers in addition to the household green ones at the super market. The key is variation. Good examples abound in the other patrons pics here.

Back to the shop. Model train night this evening and hopefully the concrete delivery for the new basement floor today or tomorrow. Friday I'm off to West by God Virginia for my last run of the year (testing a clients Lotus 11) and then the week after , Sebring, Fla with the Audi and HSR and the real end to our racing season. Catch y'all later. J.R. Hey! Anyone seen my GMT baseball hat?

Good morning.  Its a cool/drizzle morning.  It also seems like we have moved again.  Talk about a bunch of "talkers". Smile,Wink, & Grin

The manager took my area (work) to breakfast this morning.  He said our group is the best he's seen.  Kinda makes you feel good.

Not much planned today.  Just take it easy I guess.

Hope everybody has a good morning.

Mornin' everyone!

I was on my over to the diner and I noticed it got moved....  Lucky it is now closer so I didn't miss it.  Good thing I don't use a cell phone.  If I had been yakking on one of those, I probably would have gone right past it.......

Currently 47°F under cloudy skies here in the Finger Lakes this morning.  Going all the way up to 50°F this afternoon with some drizzle to keep it dark and gloomy..........  Barry keeps sending this stuff over my way after they are done with it in Canada.Whistling

Flo just a bowl of "old people cereal" and lots of dark roast coffee in a FGLK mug if you please.  I'll go sit at the Rivet Counter and see who else finds the place.

So Robby, how soon do the layoffs start?   (I have found from experience that compliments from the "Boss" are often a prelude to things like that..........)

Good Morning!

Here are two pictures.

Here is the diner being moved by a Baldwin switcher. I can here the crew:

Hank: "Hey, Bud, why are we moving the diner again?"

Bud: "Some guy named Jim in Cape G. simply could not leave well enough alone."

Hank: "Next time, Bud, tell that Jim to shove it."

Next photo is of SD9 346 (closer to camera) and SD7 317 (Behind 317).

The broken steps were worse than I thought, and just fell off when I removed the shell.  I reshaped it and glued it as well as I could.

The little foot board piece under the coupler and MU hoses was in 7 fragments. Walthers had no replacement parts. So, I glued the little pieces together. (I'm glad it was not N scale).

I replaced the entire chassis with a new one from Walthers parts.

Hereafter, 346 will be normally operated with damaged side facing the back of my around-the-wall layout.

Phil......I agree.  Not many jobs point out how hard you work.

Ray.....Thats one thing about FedEx, no layoffs.  People quit all the time, and peak season is right around the corner.  I expect it to get slow in the "new year", but not slow to layoff.

Ah.....  The busy time is coming and they want you to w**k harder?   I get it now........Whistling  BTW is there any truth to the rumor that FedEx and UPS are going to merge?  I hear it will be called FedUPS.  WhistlingWhistling  Just picking on ya you know..........  As a music teacher, each and every time I ever received any "public" recognition of the fine job I was doing or how important the boss thinks the arts are in education, the boom would be lowered shortly there after.  It usually meant they were cutting back on the dept., cutting funds for something we needed, or messing up the schedule big time so I got to w**k without the materials I needed, or the time to get it done.

Flo how about a ham on rye and a Dr. Pepper for a quick lunch?  I'll go sit in the front booth and see what is going on in the yard for a bit.

Later!

I had a really hard night last night. I finally got to bed about 1 am, woke up about 5:30 am, got my antibiotics going then went back to sleep. Woke up at noon when the Home Health nurse came knocking on the door. I still feel like I was hit by a truck - several times.

Well, Dr Pepper please.

Gary- Great pics.

Barry- Good to hear Audrey is good to go!

Jeff- Hope you're feeling better soon

Jerry- Gee, I wish I worked for the I&S Sounds like they got a good contract!

I've had an interesting several hours involving the PHONE and a collection agency. They claim Brenda owes a bill from 1992. They were very persuasive as to the fact we owed this alleged bill. I asked to be recorded and set to explaining a few things to them. First in 1996 we purchased our house and the delinquent bill didn't appear and second in 1999 she bought a car and it didn't appear then either. They claim that Fingerhut didn't file a report to any credit agencies or even file a claim for judgement for some reason that I couldn't understand because the accent from the foreign country impaired my understanding. Finally got a manager who spoke clearer and we continued. I informed him I thought it was a scam because we don't owe Fingerhut anything and he started in on what they could do. I let him speak then asked if he was sitting down and comfortable. He said he was and I said good because let me tell you how it will be whether he likes it or not. I proceeded to explain to him why I didn't believe we owed the bill and why it would be impossible to prove it and then I began to explain to him why it's a waste of his time to pursue it any farther. Mainly the statute of limitations on uncollected debts expired 7 years ago so he was trying to collect an uncollectible debt even IF the debt existed which we don't believe in all honesty it does, and that any further calls would be harassment over an non- existent bill. I also told him of an alert that is posted about scams of this type. He said he sees that I knew quite a bit about the law and if he could tell me a thing or two I may not know about the law. He went on to say there is no law that says they can't go after and ask anyone to pay a debt because a debt is a debt and is there forever. So they are legally able to do what they are doing. I said ah yes. You are correct and very convincing to someone who may not know the law and not pay attention to what you say. You were not quoting law by the way. But you are correct. There is no law prohibiting you from asking me to pay an unpayed bill from Abraham Lincoln if you choose. But there IS a law that makes me not liable to pay it, even if I can't prove I don't owe under certain situations. What is suspicious to me is there was no notice to any Credit reporting agency and the one sure way to get collection from anyone, a judgement from a court, has not happened to this day. He had a few things to say throughout the conversation that would make this even LONGER, but it finally ended thusly. I got him to admit he had no proof the debt was valid. The debt even IF valid was legally uncollectible. Regardless of how much money was spent in phone calls supposed letters we never received etc.or any of the other guilt trips he tried to send me on. He also understood that his repeated phone calls to us over an uncollectable debt would be considered harassment in the eyes of the law and that only one of our two parties would be paying anything, that it would be a MUCH larger amount and it wouldn't be me. He said we would not receive another phone call from his office. The Attorney Generals Office for the State of Illinois has been contacted, they said in no way do we owe for the bill even if it was valid because it's over ten years old and it does sound suspicious. The Agency will receive a cease and desist call from the AGO and any further contact would cost them a substantial amount.

"No further calls from our office" tells me they are going to sell the name to another agency. Oh well.

Oops, gotta go.

The last couple of days I've been hurting. The charco in my foot has moved up to my ankle and is doing it's thing. As a result I have deep bone pain (the only pain I can feel in my feet) and a low grade fever. Nothing serious but it's hard to walk. If I'm not on for some time it's most likely because I'm in bed. It hurts just to move my foot.

Sawyer.......Living in NC and moving to PA....You get use to the cold weather fast!!!  I called my buddy back in NC last winter, and he said it was cold.  The low was 28.  I said "Dan, its -5 with the wind chill right now.   Thats cold!!!"  Plus the mother-in-law lives in Orlando, and she said people wear sweaters at 50 deg.  She's from PA, and she laughs at them.

A large glass of cool lemon water, grilled salmon, garlic mashed potatoes & steamed veggies, please.

***Jeffrey, that doesn't sound good at all. Ouch!

Saw the pulmonologist today. The sarcoidosis is stage 2 or 3. She couldn't believe I wasn't on prednisone for it. I brought up the Marshall Protocol (MP) and it was obvious she hadn't heard of it, nor was she interested in any alternative treatments. She was a closed minded, typical product of med school. No breakthroughs ever come about from that way of thinking! At least I got the prescription for the bipap sleep study from her, which she readily gave me once I declined surgery.

I'll bring up the MP with my new Doc when I see her, but if she has a similar reaction, I'll return to my old Doc who I believe would consdier the MP for treating this. Only problem there is he is not covered by insurance and it would be expensive. The alternative isn't too pretty though.

Wife & I stopped at the train store on the way home. She picked up a ready made barn (which I'll weather for her), Chopper riders for her Sons Of Anarchy building, fence for her farm, and some ballast (which I probably should have bought in the first placeWhistling

True. Just think, there';s folks in Green Bay who got o the packers games shirtless during the playoffs! What really kills me is the wind though. I'm probably going to wear sweatpants more, they stop the wind.

Sawyer, I really never understood that one. What kills me in the cold is being wet, then wind. BTW, Al Harris got hurt in the last game and is out for the season.Sad

Garry, the repairs look pretty good to me.

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Just checking in. I'm just waiting on my antibiotics and iv supplies to be delivered. The delivery driver called and said he was running late due to a tractor-trailer turning over in Lake Charles. Anyone who has worked such a scene knows the major traffic problem is seldom caused by the wreck but rather by the unending line of rubber neckers who just have to slow to a crawl and gawk at the spectacle. After he gets here I'm going to take some pain killers (Lortab for the bone pain and Lyrica for the nerve pain) and go to bed. Maybe I'll get some sleep tonight. My sister and her husband will get home around midnight so I won't have to go over in the morning to feed the menagerie . I'll actually be able to sleep in a bit.

Edit: The supplies have arrived and have been stored away in the fridge.

   Good night.

Good Evening Diners!

Sounds like several of you are getting into high gear for your Thanksgiving in a couple of days. I sometimes marvel at the amount of work that goes into a dinner like that and how fast it is all over. I do hope everyone has a great day and remember that it is Ok to eat all you want and then 50% more as it is all calorie-free on Thanksgiving. That plus it is also ok to fall asleep right after dinner and it won't even be your fault, just the naturally reaction to turkey.

Just got back from the vet's as I had to take in little Pippa to get a growth on her rear checked out. It is some sort of adoma (whatever that is) which will have to be removed as it will just grow larger and then  be a larger problem to take off. The vet says he can do it with a local.

Been very quiet at work which earlier in my career would have me worried but as it is now it will cost them nearly as much to get rid of me as it would to keep me until I retire in a couple of years. I guess my boss finds it handy that he can just call me for some history on something rather than try to find it in a file if indeed there even is a file.

Sawyer, yes it is all relative as they say on the temperature thing. Up here in Winterpeg it gets far colder than in Green Bay. Now a temp of say, 35 feels a little cool but in spring it will seem nearly hot after our typical winter. It is amazing how you get used to temperatures. When we went to Borneo a few years ago I thought we would pass out with the heat and humidity but after a week or so it just seemed hot and no big deal. Speaking of weather, our very warm November is coming to and end in more ways than one as the highs will be back to normal  by the weekend which means highs of 25F and a low of about 10F.

Jeff, take care of yourself and know that we are all pulling for you.

Well think I'll go down to the shop and continue with the surgery I'm doing on an IHC diner interior so that it will fit an Athearn heavyweight. It is coming along nicely and after I remove an inch or so it will fit with the tables lining up correctly with the windows.

Why do I never have the camera in the car when I go through Stellarton? The tracks there have a Wye that crosses the highway twice within 50 yards. (I’ve not seen any action on it in 10 years, but hat’s not the point).  Monday as we approached, the lights were flashing; and we were treated to a view of a HCLX (Bassel Canada, Inc.) GP 40 or 50 something crossing down towards the main on the further leg. No traffic in front of us, an easy “full body” shot had I had the camera.Banged Head  HCLX is one of the leasing companies often seen in Stellarton, and one I want to model on the MTR.  It’s a dead easy re-paint – dark blue body, white handrailand reporting marks, black trucks. No heralds or anything fancy. Garry:
Der John ... I watched the video of the bridge collapse. If they rebuild, will it be  a modern type bridge?
…my guess is probably, given the economic times…unless that is it’s a Registered Building (aka  Historically significant money eating nightmare) in which case it will have to be re-built in all it’s former, if grimy, glory. Sawyer:  Thanks for the info on that grass. I’m thinking that if the WS product is formatted for HO, you could get several “plantings” from the trimming of the first clumps. Your stuff looks real nice.Todd: Yes, glad you’ve found the Diner crowd as convivial and non-judgemental as have I for some years now. This is the only place I regularly go on the forums. When I do stray outside, the tone of the alternatives always brings me back in here! I echo Barry’s remark “…And all of you thanks for the help and encouragement”----
I think a little boulevard would look great as a divider for your parking lot. It wouldn't have to be really big, just there to give a break is all you'd need. Go for it!
…y’know, I think I might just do that. I was thinking as I drove home yesterday that I could use some plastic tube as “planters” at the ends, a tree in each, have a curb along each side, fill the center with brown N scale ballast to look like that bark mulch, and just add some evergreen shrubs and other bushes along the thing. As you say, it wouldn’t have to be more than perhaps 2’-3’ wide, and still give the impression.JR:
While unfortunate, the destruction of the bridges was also instructional. Didn't realize dirt fill was used to level the interior for the roadbed. Wonder if that is the case because it cushioned the structure from the weight of trains (or road traffic)? Perhaps that is why we're still using structures built in the 1800's.
…You may be right about that load distribution thing, but I also suspect it could be because dirt is, um, dirt cheap! It’s a technique used for centuries – Hadrian’s wall and Norman-French fortification walls being examples. Sometimes the fill is solidified with mortar of some sort, most often not, I think. In any case, the fill tends to be a happy hunting ground for later archaeologists since it contains any old thing thrown in to add bulk.On the cell phones in cars thing, illegal in Nova Scotia, and the police are beginning to crack down on the blatant and stupid abusers…and Jeff, it seems it takes a human blood sacrifice for city fathers to cough up the cash to put in a set of traffic lights…to sort of quote a Judy Collins(?) song “…yes and how many deaths does it take to decide that too many people have died?...”

Keith: Nice work on that rust – I think you’ve got it pretty much nailed. The Maritime Trunk, BTW, prefers paint on that building! LOL

NittanyL.:
Discovered today that the entrance to my brewery's corn syrup building is too short.  The railings at the top of the tank cars strike the door frame.  Oops!  Glad I discovered this before I actually laid track.  The clearance is so slight that I suspect a lower weight rail (its code 83 right now) will actually allow the cars to ease inside.
…no chance of cutting the doorway higher? Just thought I’d ask.RobbyP:
Thats cold!!!"  Plus the mother-in-law lives in Orlando, and she said people wear sweaters at 50 deg.
…as do I here on Nova Scotia’s Eastern Shore, because Vincent  has it right.
What kills me in the cold is being wet, then wind.
But then I’m cold blooded.
Jeff: That foot sounds scary…take care, and we are pitching for you.Angel

Front tie rod end and an alignment on the car tomorrow. Who knows, there may be time for some mmr; there won’t be Thursday, but I should be able to get to a LHS.

Oh, one more thing. No trains, but it’s worth a view. Bedtime again…so Goodnight folks, and God Bless. Prayers for all in need of healing, comfort, prosperity and peace.Angel
