Spent the day to now at the shop finishing up the Lotus 11 and loading for Summit Point (ah the glamour of the racers life). I'm leaving tomorrow though, just couldn't face another Thanksgiving meal at Huddle House (the only place open today in Winchester, Va. and yes I have had my Thanksgiving meal there).

The CFO has the turkey done and we're off later to my oldest son and DIL's for the actual meal (easier when everyone brings something). Catch y'all later,   J.R.

 Just got back from my sister's place. We had an excellent Thanksgiving meal. The cable out here went out early this afternoon and was down for over four hours. In fact it had come back on here about an hour ago.

Pretty full day until we got back home about 5:40 p.m. Foggy drive down the shore (that means east from Halifax ) coming home.  Did  get to the LHS, and apart from the things on the list, picked up another used built up factory, the twin of the one that’s now an engine house on the renewed freight yard. Since I didn’t post a “before” pic of that, here’s what the twin looks like (or did up to 15 minutes ago when I started ripping the details off and liberating the building from the base.LOL) That's the front, this is the rear. It’s going to be another engine house, this time part of the engine maintenance facility at the other end of the layout (aka just 8 inches above and 6 feet to the right of the first one.)  Ray: Strike up the band! Hope your Birthday was a huge success!  Sawyer: Yup, I’ll likely try that grass first off in a cow pasture I’ve got planned. That German-Swiss scratch builder gave me some multi-coloured sawdust stuff from Europe that I think will do for wild flowers in that meadow, and the clump grass should contrast well. I’ll have to get my cows out so I don’t make the grass impossibly high! (did I write grass and high in the same sentence? Ooops! )  Todd: Glad you like the parking divider. The height of those tubs does give a bit of visual variety. Not my idea, just what I see around.   I though last night my camera had died. It was just that all my spare re-chargable batteries were flat! Quite a relief, as I really don’t have cash for a replacement!  Looks like it’s time for bed again. Goodnight all, and God Bless. Good Thanksgiving (and Ray's Natal Anniversary) Evening, Janie. I'll have a chocolate chip cookie and a mug of eggnog (for me, with my birthday usually falling between Thanksgiving Day and the start of Advent (that pre-Christmas thing..), I consider after the big Thanksgiving meal to be the start of eggnog (and Christmas) season. Besides, I don't do that OH-MIGOSH-IT'S-EARLY-AND-NOT-EVEN-THE-BIRDS-ARE-UP!! Friday morning thing at the stores. Oh, here's my eggnog and the cookie - thanks, Janie!

And a big thank you as well to our NOTB Diners (not to be confused with those whose drifts can be measured in a mere handful of feet of the white stuff...), and may your wood supply and electric and internet connections hold up well all winter long. 

Todd, I'd agree with you about the Diner being one of the most helpful things for keeping me on track (pun intended...) with my railroad and layout. A big Missouri Howdy-ThankYew for all the help you all have been, and for keeping me thinking about my MRR'ing. As for the RC thread, Todd, I can see where Crandell decided to close it down before it turned really ugly - he closed it with a comment that several good points were made on that thread.

Eric, hope you get the research paper finished up soon enough (and well enough) to have some time for MRR'ing before Christmas (and after any needed/required shopping & wrapping). And remember to enjoy the time with friends and family, as well.

Garry - (to modify a certain beverage's ad phrase) "Got sleeping bags?" I recall spending one Christmas in Omaha at my aunt and uncle's house, sleeping on cots in the basement - THAT was cool back then!

My roast a la crock pot (mine isn't related to that McDonald's guy ) turned out well, very tender and I liked the taste (tried different seasonings this time). Also fixed strawberry-raspberry Jello (one box of each, mixed together), but started too late on that to eat it tonight (without a straw). Had my co-w**ker Jason and his girlfriend bring me back TWO paper plates of grub from his family's Thanksgiving dinner. They called me before they left going there, to ask if I preferred turkey or ham. When I said I had the roast in the crockpot, he said that was okay, I could have turkey leftovers tomorrow, just like everyone else.

Only had one trip to ER (more counseling than assessment) and one phone call to tend to today for my on-call. Oh yeah, and the hospital had turkey and fixin's in their 'break room' (across the hall from one side of the hallway where I come in to get to the ER). One of the doctors (whose patient I was seeing) told me after I got done, to go get something to eat, so I actually got some turkey before Jason got back. Yep, I am blessed in many ways. I couldn't find much of any place open today when I went looking for a soda and internet connection. So far, I'm piggybacking off a neighbor's open WiFi (and keeping my bandwidth down) to get this posted. (I did find a gas station to get a soda, though) Tomorrow it will be laundry time, since I'm back on-call Sat. and Sunday.

Randy, you're going great guns on your layout there! I still have a 4X8 sheet of that stuff (they called it 'soundboard', I think, when I got it at the lumber yard (in the mid/late 1970's). But I'll be using mine for some mountain rock edges of hills mostly.

Jeff, I'm guessing your chills finally went away (whether they were related to the antibiotics or not), correct? Meant to ask, is that sporty yellow car on the flatbed going to the repair shop?

Barry - a few decoration thingees? Yeah, right! I need to dig mine out tomorrow - the apartment-sized tree, lights for the tree (and there're enough so I also string them up and around the living room window with the colored strand), stockings, gold glittered-up pine cone (for my office decoration). Of course, that means I'll have to move the printer off the box (where I usually put the tree) next to the TV and find a place for the printer somewhere else.

DerJohn, that (future) enginehouse looks amazingly like (in N scale) the old Revell enginehouse(/bakery/newspaper/...) that I have in HO scale. Like your median planters.

Well, about time for me to get ready for bedtime, even if I'm NOT even gonna go near the mall tomorrow. Hope everyone gets a good night's rest (to go with those naps after dinner earlier today), and prayers for those Diners who haven't checked in today or will be travelling (JR).

Tonight was pretty fun. Tons of food; from what I was told, we had 7 turkeys!!! A lot of the older cousins weren't there this year, so the place had an "empty" feel to it...

The chills do go away after about 30 minutes. Yes, the Porsche is to be dropped at the repair shop. Wouldn't want it to end up like the Citation next to the trackside building.

If you don’t like the weather in Ohio wait 5 minutes, it will change.  I have a quarter mile walk from the truck to the office here and this morning I got out of the truck and it was raining, by the time I got to the office it was snowing!


Todd, yes some of the L.S. & W. rolling stock made its way down to the L&A last year.  It’s cool to see it on his layout with the original markings.


John boy, my son’s birthday is 23 NOV and I think it’s only landed on Turkey day twice in the last 18 years.

Jeff, is your cable system underground?  We had a huge problem with phone and cable in Corpus Christi; due to the possibility of a hurricane all utilities except power ran underground and was susceptible to flooding.

Jim, some of the stores out here opened at 0400hrs this morning with people waiting in line to be the first in the store.  Personally I do a little shopping every month throughout the year.  It would be nice if everyone on my list was a model railroader then it wouldn’t be so hard to do the shopping.

 The steel mills in Pittsburg and Cleveland have re-started so I’m celebrating with a nice taconite color highlights.  Soon railcars filled with the taconite pellets and titanium slag will be making their way inland from the lake.  The titanium slag is shipped in by boat from Africa and Australia and used in everything from paper to toothpaste.

The only things underground here are gas lines, phone lines, water lines and roots. Cable and power are above ground except when there's a storm, when they're on the ground. The biggest problem with the cable here is that the cable service retrofitted an already aging system (installed in the early 80's) that was designed to carry no more than 50 cable channels. Now it carries over 100 cable channels, broadband internet, cable telephone and God knows what else. There's no way they can guarantee uninterrupted service as the cable TV signal is interrupted at least once a month and the cable internet signal gets bounced around from good to bad constantly and, out here at least, goes down at least once a week. I don't know about their phone service as I don't know anybody who has it, but I would think those folks have some times they get hot around the collar.

Good morning, Happy Day After Thanksgiving, or Black Friday as some call it, or Clean Up the Deep Fryer in the Garage Day as it's known at my house. Coffee, scrambled eggs with tomatoes and turkey please.

Today: Sunny, with a high near 48. West wind around 7 mph becoming south. Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 34. South wind between 7 and 9 mph.

I noticed this morning that the locomotive on MRR home page that they use in the advertising for The Modelrailroaders Guide To Diesel Locomotives' flip page ( no 5) appears to be the same loco my AHM is. Or wants to be. Can't be for sure because I can't see the top of the hood. And the handrails seem a bit thinner on the proto (chuckle). You know, now that you brought up the old girl. I thought I'd let you know I've finally decided to identify this little piece of history that was only called ALCO 1000HP Switcher. Several "experts" on the web over the years have differing opinions as to what it is, an S-1 or S-2. Odd until last night at approx 2:00am, as I was awaiting the dogs return from apparently relieving itself of the first wave of Thanksgiving dinner, did I never think to look at the prototype pages and compare myself, instead of the AHM collectors type pages. Any way very quickly even with just Wikepedia, it was narrowed to the S-2 because of the claimed HP, the radiator size, the exhaust stack and the door configuration (last two doors toward the rear and that‘s without counting the number) and the Blunt Trucks. Very easy simple and not very difficult. However, realizing that Wikepedia, though usually correct, can be a bit misinformed at times do to the way it is created and edited, enter The Yard Limit website as a second opinion and yup, an S-2 we have. Ta Daaaaa! Finally after all these years a 10 minute search and I found out.

Jim- Yes I agree with Crandell, (as if it's going to make him sleep better tonight knowing I approve). I mean the whole idea of a moderator is to keep things from turning ugly. Not sit back and watch it get ugly and hope for it to get better, then after the instigators get their say, lock the thread so they get the last nasty word. Kinda like if you don't want Graffiti, you don't wait until it's painted then kick them out of the yard and say see I took care of it. You grab them while they're walking toward the car with the spray paint. Like I said I respect the moderators position and think they do a good job. No one likes to be cut off when they are talking, but sometimes for the good of the whole, it has to be done. Usually, not always, but usually if you notice, the biggest complainers about getting shutdown are the ones who got it shut down to begin with.

(pssssst! But did you notice the majority of the folks didn't overly care what someone else does with their railroad?) Why is it there has to be a self appointed group of guardians for most everything you do. The ones who have decided it's their hobby, activity, or whatever. Oh well.

Lee- But if they all were MRR's, wouldn't that make it harder? I mean by the time Christmas gets here, I'm SURE you will have thought of a place to work that gift into your layout.

OK, the truck is not coming until tomorrow at the restaurant, yes Saturday, because of the holiday and the fields are too wet to be worked, so, that means, other than the fryer, I have nothing to do. You know what that means? I think you do.

It appears that we got a wee bit o' snain this morning---snain being a combination of rain/snow in all their forms going on all at once. Our high today---in the snain---will be 5C while the low will be 0C. Oh--it is also very dull---

Most of the decs are out in the living room and will be slowly worked on--the vintage ornaments are displayed in the cabinets while ever't'in' else be stuffed into the tree. Our tree ends up with around 450 -500 lights in it by the time Audrey be done with them Plus the tree usually has about 275-325 ornaments on it----kinda pretty looking when it is done--

'Spring' has already taken over the tree skirt that I left out in the storage room---so we'll have our annual fur cleaning done before the tree is put up----sometime this weekend---or so---

Chloe, I'll have a coffee and an egg/sausage on a muffin please---I'll be at the RC for now--

Sunny morning, though a tad cool (not unseasonable for this time of year, only 40 F/ 4C), and supposed to warm up to 13 C/56 F by this afternoon. Went by grocery store to return the unopened box of stuffing mix (maybe I'll try it another time), and the lot was full - the K-discount store is next door on the lot, and maybe the grocery store was running some kind of specials, dunno. Got my refund and headed for the laundry and the Diner.

Jeff, good to hear those chills don't stick around long. Would an electric blanket you could have set to warm you up, and then just turn it on, help with the chills?

Sawyer, I got over to view your video - like your w**k on the scenery. How're the crossings looking to w**k out?

Todd, I hope you weren't using that deep fryer *inside* the garage (only dragged it inside later in the day after it was turned off and shut down), didja? I've seen video clips previously about those deep fryers with turkeys... Another reason I don't do fried foods - the cleanup... (And careful there, unless you're fishing for trolls in these parts...). I like the looks of the S-2 locos, every since, I think it was an older RMC that had an SP S-2 in the Tiger stripe scheme on the cover (went with an article on making a small diesel fueling/sanding station). Oh, lemme guess, Todd - would tomorrow be a day for w**king in Toddland?

Barry - your weather sounds, uh, 'sneat', I'm sure. When you referred to fur cleaning, were you talking about Spring, or the rest of the interior of the house? The former could be a very, interesting experience, I would think. Best wishes with that, either way.

I'm debating about going to H-L today, given what day it is and all. I'm hoping that all the craftsy women will already have bought their materials for their Christmas decorating and gifts, so I can get around in there without too much trobule. (Am I deluding myself on that?...) I also need to get another pair of Dockers for w**k, but since I'll be off Monday and Tuesday (with this brave new w**k schedule...), I may just wait and go during the day then.

Today, I REALLY need to clean/clear off the dining room table. Probably go by the rental place for one of these:
