Wes and Chuck......you would be hard pressed to find someone on the Forum who has had more knee surgery and more rehab than me. 3 full-blown arthrotomies, each with a dedicated 9 month rehab. Arthroscopies were out because the repairs needed complete access. The setbacks (additional surgeries) were discouraging. Yet each functional outcome exceeded my expectations.
My orthopedic surgeon cautioned that a damaged/then repaired knee will never be quite as good as the undamaged original. But he added a caveat: "The level of recovery toward your former self will depend solely on you. Your knee is my surgical masterpiece, so don't screw it up again."
His roadmap to recovery was simple. Patience with perserverence. And some lifestyle changes. Lower-impact, daily exercise. A list of activities to limit. Others to downright give up. "Listen" to your knees, they will tell you what they don't like.
Key to recovery for me was designing my rehab around my home versus a healthclub, a pool, or both. I knew myself. Any and everything that could delay or cancel my workouts would, after my initial enthusiasm faded, derail my program. One skipped workout would become two until there were none, and I failed in the rehab. I had to develop a program by first recognizing my personality (deficiencies). Had trouble finding some at first.
We may want to take this off line. My opinions are just that. Opinions. But they come with the blessing of an orthopedic surgeon who was arguably at or near the top of his specialty in Chicago.
In any event, you two have a lot of fine folks from this Forum in your corner, pulling for you.
Jack

Good Morning from Blueberryhill....
It is a rainy 74 degrees. No sunshine. Maybe it will clear up.
Today is a quiet day. Still on walker. Just to be safe. Getting around a little better. Pain is less.
Wall Street is in trouble. Another big bank failed. Watch out.
Dining car was here and left for " Points West". Enjoy.
Y'all have a great Friday.

GOOD MORNING ALL
First i'll throw in my medical update, Drs. office called said my blood test for arteritis(inflamed artries) was normal so thats one less thing I have. The other is due to my almost closed nasel passages I may not be getting enough oxygen when I sleep and that could be causing the constant headaches. Sleeping test Monday nite. And so it goes on and on.
We have another beautiful day so I will trim the grass sometime this afternoon. Not sure about running trains today, but maybe finish CTT.
I hope we all have a good day and some of you sure need one more than me........S.J.

Just a quickee post - really busy at work
Jack - for your wife, last time I had them was 2 years ago and I'm much happier not being "stoned" (as it were). I dunno what childbirth is like, but, I'll tell you what, I think I'll "pass" on that kind of fun.
Had the window open for a 3rd night, sleeping is wonderful, the air is crisp and clean in the higher 70's no humidity to speak of. Tomorrow is goes to 87. Hope the humidity keeps hiding. Tonight is the dreaded Friday night lights - have to accompany the princess to the game as she is dancing (dance team) again. Avoided high school and college football, then finally got roped into this 35 years after high school. And here I thought I'd never go......
Train store tomorrow, maybe a bike trip tommorrow night. Sunday have to help my son work on his Daytona as my Satellite sits and waits (and waits, and waits....)
Lost another one last night, but I still went 2-3 with an RBI and scored. Not bad for an old guy!
OK boys, see ya later.

Jack,
Thanks for all of the info. I don't exercise much anymore. If I join gyms, I dont go often enough. I was using the treadmill until I really tore up my knees one day playing basketball, and never got on it afterwards. My bike hasn't come off the hooks in the garage in years. After all of this is done, I might get an eliptical machine or something similar. I was doing crunches and pushups daily, and that seemed to really help.
I have plenty of vacation banked up (some 3 months+), but I don't like not going to work. They are pretty flexible though.
Wes
Jack, no more Metrolink mishaps but just to keep it interesting my son slept through his stop last night and I had to go to the next station to pick him up. I told him to get an alarm clock. Best wishes to all the walking wounded on here including myself. I guess Chief is living it up at the new Lake house. I'm sure he will tell us all about it when he gets back.

THANK YOU LORD!!!!!
Next year on the 25th of September I'm staying in bed all day.
My great neighbor, Karen turned 49 today so I called her and told her Happy Birthday and would she remember to clean the litter box while we are gone this weekend. She didn't know if she should laugh or slam the phone down.
The BLUE JACKETS' (Chief just loves the name of our hockey team.) first pre-season game is tonight. So here we go again.
Can't wait to put Wes in the back of the pickup truck in his wheelchair and zoom east to YORK. Wes, make sure you have your toothbrush for easier bug removal after the trip.
Wes and I have found a cabin in the woods for York. If we ever got our act together we could have everyone to the cabin for BUCKEYE CHUCK CHILLI and COLD BUCKEYE BEER. (Miller and Bud are both brewed in OHIO then we send all the skanky stuff to NC.)
Project meeting went really good today. Our project is on schedule and under budget. Except for the stolen light pole foundations, everything is normal.
It was so nice to see the BEAVERS beat the TROJANS last night........ That doesn't happen too often. BTW, best all time sports team nickname is the HOT DOGS from Frankfort, Indiana. I wanted my parents to move there when I was you so I could be a HOT DOG TIGHT END.
Thanks again to everybody for putting up with my great week of downers. See ya later.

GOOD EVENING ALL
The day ended well, got the grass trimmed, and almost finished CTT.
Kidney stone, I had one I hope never again. Mine got stuck and would not come out. Had out patient surgery, in other words they roto-rutered me to get it out. They took pictures, it looks like a cinder.
Brutus is out tonite so I guess we can take the Tardis, he did not say we couldn't, of course I did not ask either. But fresh supply of banilla has arrived so we are ready,,,,,,TTFN......S.J.
Ha - glad Laz installed that alarm on the Tardis - gotcha!
Wife cancelled the visit with friends tonight as she and the kids (the people with hair) had hair cutting appointments and didn't get home until 7. Now the kids are cleaning house as we have guests coming to sleep over tomorrow night.
Work was throwing away some really nice heavy duty steel shelf units, so my buddy and I grabbed 3 of them on my truck. I'm working OT tomorrow and after work we will grab any that are still left!
RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.
How are you guys getting along in the Southeast without gasoline? That hasn't happened in about 34 years!

Good evening everyone. Sorry I have not kept up on posts, and missed some big events....mostly sad news (sorry Buckeye). Also, folks with prayer needs, sorry for letting you down. I try to keep everyone in my daily prayers, but it does get tough to remember.
Had a relatively good day today. Just a couple of cases. Then, the babysitter backed out for movie night and I had to get two extra tickets for the kids. As it was, the movie does not have too many parts that we needed to worry with the kids. Just need to explain a few things, but it did set up for a good life lesson to both of them. It was kind of neat as the FD had the new arial truck there with the stick in the air with a American Flag flying on the tip. Also had lots of spot lights/entertainment lighting, etc. Good to see the theater packed. They had 3 screens showing the movie for a total of 12 shows and all are sold out.
We got an unexpected check today from the mortgage bank. They took out too much in escrow, so they sent a few grand our way. I told wife I could use it for a few nice scale locomotives....she didn't see the humor
On another front, wife is actually working this weekend (first time in a month). She needs to work 1 or 2 days a month to keep her position at the hospital. I guess it helps her keep her sanity after dealing with two young ones all day. Anyway, the kids want to work on the layout tomorrow and I sure need to get back to it. Not on call, so we may actually get to do this.
Read the latest CTT. I really enjoyed several of the articles. I am sure I will use lots of information from it.
God Bless,Dennis

Evenin' boys. Ahhhhhh parenthood...not so good friday --->
Buckeye - BEAVERS and TROJANS and GRITS, oh my! Don't get to utter that often...
PhilaKnight - Be looking for Unit 1477 Tuesday.
dwiemer - Happy Anniversary.
Sir james - Nice news on the test. Will they let you take your teddy?
Yahoo just reported the following the laws suits are starting to fly as we thought they would
LOS ANGELES - The brakeman on the freight train in a deadly collision near Los Angeles is suing the other railroad and the companies that provide its engineers.
Dominick Fravola and his wife sued Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court. They say the Sept. 12 crash happened because the defendants allowed dangerous conditions to persist.
The lawsuit seeks an unspecified amount in damages, medical and psychological expenses and loss of income. His wife also seeks damages for loss of consortium.
The lawsuit names the Metrolink service, as well as Veolia Transportation and a subsidiary. Metrolink and Veolia declined to comment.
In the accident, a Metrolink train ran a red signal and collided with the Union Pacific freight. Twenty-five people died
Hi Guys,

Buckeye.....I formerly stated I couldn't bring myself to tell my current tale of woe after reading about the bad day you had. Well, like the candidates during the debate tonight, I'm changing my position.
Wife had parked her car closest to the building at work, legit spot. No signs. No warnings. No cordoned off spots. Later and unbeknownst to her, roofers arrived. Fast forward 10 hours. Wife leaves the building, goes out to car, and there is $984 dent in the roof.
Roofers want to "negotiate." Wife's Director of Facilities gets involved, and the whole situation goes into meltdown with too many people involved. My position was: "You broke it. You fix it. You pay for it" Simple, or so you'd think. Actually, my dealer fixes it. Confirmed in writing to roofing company.
Eventually got to the point where the roofers' headquarters agreed to the estimate and a car rental, but they wanted us to sign a release/waiver of liability before they would hand my wife the check. Essentially that translates, if the actual repairs exceed the estimate due to unforeseen circumstances, I eat the diff.
So I compromised my original position. "You broke it. You fix it. You pay for it. Then I'll sign the release." Simple, or so you'd think.
This has been going on for a week, and today the roofers' rep was supposed to show up with the check and a revised waiver of liability, including a contingency for a repair overage. Think he showed?
Car scheduled to go in for repair on Monday, 3 day process, had to book last week. I've got a $1,000 deductible and adamantly refuse to front my own cash.
Tempted to meet myself with roofers' rep, show up last, fashionably late, with my dog Duke the Doberman. Then tell roofers' rep that Duke takes unkindly to blackmail. A few years back for yuks, we taught Duke to do his ferocious attack Doberman bark, using a very subtle hand signal. May finally come in handy.
Hello,
It's just about impossible to find gas in the Atlanta area. I finally found a gas station this morning that had a load delivered a couple of hours earlier. I had to sit in line for about 30 minutes to get to the pump. By 1 PM they were sold out too.

I noticed that you live in Jacksonville, FL. I was born and raised there ... also lived there for 51 years. We moved from there to Atlanta 10 years ago. I go back to Jax once in a while to visit family and friends. It has really changed a lot over the past 10 years!
What part of town do you live in?
Mornin' boys. Rainy & 72 here in the Mid-Atlantic region. Have a family reunion (wife's side) up in Littlestown, PA this afternoon. Should be a fun-fun-fun ride listening to wifey and eldest princess back-and-forth.
choochin - Hey, thanks for the heads-up. Might just ride over there tomorrow, and if it's sunny, stop by the B&O and finally get a pic of Chessie 3802.
RockIsland - I can make those same barking sounds...ask eldest princess.
Marty - When I watch sports on tv, I often wonder if you're looking thru the lens...
Morning!
Sir James: Remember you need to sleep during this stint at the Hilton...
Fife: Hope you have a great time at the reunion!
Rock: Maybe some court documents in hand at the start of the next meeting will help with the negociations. No Go... You Go and file in small claims court.
House cleaning today...powerwashing, and painting.
Kurt
Good Morning everyone!
Wife gone to work, so I am here with the kids. Son want to play the Wii, so I'll get that going in a moment. Daughter just wants to dress up....I will let her do that on her own Plan is we have to go to the movie theater later to retrieve son's jacket that he left there last night. Then, lunch and come home to work on the layout.
Jack, gas is troublesome. I was able to sustain for awhile as we have some extra vehicles with full tanks, plus, I had several cans full of gas in the garage for the tractor, but with the work schedule, I have not been able to cut the lawn....wife has some guys that do it for us. Regular gas you can find at most places, but premium is difficult and that is what the benz runs on. Oh well, this too shall pass.
Hope it is a great day for everyone.
God Bless,
Dennis
GO GET EM Jack,we the working folk are always getting stuck with the bill, everything is going down hill, can't even find the stairs that go up anymore.
We will get 70s today but by the the middle of next week the forecast brings a tear to my eye.
Most of my train projects are on hold so I can take in the last of summer, sigh. Have a great weekend....S.J.
Kurt......why use a shark when my Doberman will do? Saves time too.
No court hassles down the road over the car in small claims court, or on an assault charge because I jumped over the table and beat the guy to death.......as long as the knucklehead doesn't think Duke is bluffing. "Honestly, your honor, he never bit anyone before. And the guy was really mean and threatening."
Maybe I should borrow another persuasive device from Fife, tazer or 9mm.....so many choices, just like trains.
Still here in Atlanta. So far I have seen several gas stations open for business. Although with over inflated prices.
Fife... Never behind the camera. Always in the 53' white box.
Looks like another georgeous day. Thank goodness for Notre Dame footbal as we get done early today. Can't wait to get home and work more on the layout.
Have a great day all!

Brutus/Jim......Chief may be stranded at Chief's Chalet in Chief's Cove on Lake Eagles, no gas. Tardis to the rescue. On the other hand, leaving him there has its advantages.
Dennis.......for future reference or to satisfy your curiosity, you may want to check your owners' manual in the fuel section regarding octane. There is a difference between "required" octane and "recommended" octane. Infinity posts a recommendation but not a requirement, and goes further to describe what to do when their "recommended" premium octane of 91 (for my car) cannot be found and what to do when running on regular 87. Funny they didn't say anything about mid grade 89. All my Ferraris and Lamborghinis carry a premium fuel requirement of 93 or above, no exceptions.
Hundai actually provides both horsepower and torque ratings on their website at different octanes for those of you wondering what happens powerwise when you downshift to a lower octane.
Mornin' All !
What a day at the museum yesterday. Started out with a dead Z4K got it replaced and Mr Murphy's Law applied, the replacement also was dead. It was either feast or famine as far as guests go, and it never seems to fail that the biggest crowds arrive at lunch and just brfore closing. At lunchtime the layout smelled more like an Italian restaurant then a toy train layout. To go with our lasagna I was grilling some garlic bread, yumyum. All passenger service yesterday, B&O, RI, EL and SF.
Fife, Might I suggest a roll up window between front & rear seat, of course the intercomm and window controls in drivers area only, and mandate() fifey-wifey with princesses ride in back.
