Don't forget to put in a master switch to shut down all the train stuff with one switch, makes life a lot easier and a lot safer.

AMEN to that!!!! For some reason I put in a master switch when I started the layout and it is great.  I have one lighted accessory that glows if the master switch is not off.

Just a few more hours and TGIF.

Learned to today that we are on the receiving end of a nice new contract at work.

Block Party tomorrow night.  I hope the rain holds off, but we really need the rain.

Evenin' fellas.

JF - yes new job is really putting a damper on trains... Sad [:(] I am losing about 2 hours in the evening as I used to get home around 4 and now roll in around 6. So I don't have the luxury of spare time like I used to. Also the job is very mentally draining so I don't have much energy when I get home.

I need to get working on the X-Mas layout for this year though. So I will make it a point to do at least 1 hour work on it at least 2 days a week. I also need to put the finishing touches on a couple projects (shed, master bathroom) and then repaint our master bedroom. I want all the painting done before Fall hits and I have to close up the house.

Fife - keep your fingers, toes, legs, arms, eyes crossed... should know tomorrow!

Hi all! Wow on all the child injuries! My best to Kpolaks child though I didn't see the post on the concern. I spent many a night/day in hospitals for our variety of injuries from basic fix ups to surgeries.

Enjoying my fav. sport of tennis as the US open continues. VCR is on rec. 6hrs a day. Getting tough to stay up late and watch the matches.

Please keep us South Floridians in your prayers. Hurricane Ike is headed right for us down here and it's a mean one - cat 4 at this moment. Probably have to put up shutters and drag stuff in this weekend if the track doesn't change. Sometimes I wonder why I didn't stay in Michigan.

That is what it looks like.  Maybe it will go south of you and into Mexico.  Was watching TV and the storm forecast and jsut woke up sitting in recliner.  To bed.  OH BTW: the MTh guy was wrong.  Had fixed all my switches with a gap on those rails.  Switch controller came apart in my hand.  Lever just falling loose inside the plastic "box".  Good night.  Sleep tight and don't let the bed bugs bite.

Good Morning from Blueberryhill....

It is a sunny 62 degrees. Going up to 82 today with a chance of rain late.

Today is busy. I have a few errands to run and then a bunch of paperwork to do. Maybe I'll spend some time in the train room, after that.

Looks like the South is going to get some storms. Good luck.

Dining car is here and it's time for breakfast. Later.

Y'all have a great Friday.  Buckeye.. TGIF

Good morning all,

Rainy in SE Indiana.  May have to mow this weekend or next.  "My" soccer girls tied 1-1 in a game they should have won big time.  JV lost 1-0.  Boys got pounded.  May do some reffing this weekend but have not been called yet.  Wife picked digital converter boxes for our TV and will have to install them this weekend.  Hope they work with the VCR.  Talked to Lucas last night.  He has only 15 kids in the Latin class he is taking.  Not bad for a freshman class at IU.  I had bran muffins on the dining car this morning.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana

Mornin' boys.  Sunny & 75 here in the Mid-Atlantic region.  Wet weather projected to arrive around evening rush hour.  Hopefully power issues won't crop up; don't want to spend an evening in an intersection.  At least I won't have to dodge the occasional alligator.

Mornin' Fellas.

Quick stop by before putting the nose to the grind stone again.

Laz - If you put in non-rechargable batteries make sure you flip the switch under the command base to turn off the charger! If you don't you could cause bad things to happen.

Got an email from Lionel that my Legacy system has been upgraded and is on its way back... wow! The original email said 4 - 9 days and it took less than 1! Thumbs Up [tup] Should be here Monday... which is cool because I don't have any plans for Monday! Smile [:)]

Supposed to get some nasty weather tonight and tomorrow morning... and since the night and morning are going to be washed out - literally - the afternoon/evening are open so I hope to get down to the trainroom and do some cleanup, construction, and then start designing the X-Mas layout for this year. Not going to wait for authorization, just going to do it... I think I have enough track (curves at least) so hopefully the only track I'll need to buy is some straights and maybe a switch (can't remember what I have from last year). Also going to work on the elevated layout, I should be able to get that done before X-Mas (if you remember we host X-Mas at our place so would like to have it done by then). Planning for O72 curves on that so I can justify buying the larger steamers... Whistling [:-^] That C&O Legacy Allegheny really looks nice!

Morning all.  Breakfast eaten.  Getting ready for some rain.  Looks like the Merrylanders may get more than we do.  Hope no flooding up your way.  South Florida is getting rain now.  Ike, go away and stay.  Forecasters are saying Homestead and Miami.  Sure hope not.  [I use to live down there for a short while].  Later.

The rest of the year here is great; just August, September and sometimes October. They're pushing Ike a little further west on this morning's map but who knows... it's still 5 days out. Everyone around here has that deer-in the-headlights look about them and the lind at the Walmart gas station is probably 5 cars deep already. I went there before a storm a while ago and the gridlock was so bad I had to get out of the car and stand in front of some genius who was determined to buck the line. By the way, we supersize our mosquitoes here, too.

Re the lighted accessory for power indication: when I do an oval on the floor, I always hook a street lamp up to non-variable source on the transformer so I can see at a glance if the power is off. I'd rather not leave a '50s vintage RW plugged in for 3 days!

You mean other then using the breaker at the fuse box for a cut off switch? Probaly easier then running to the fuse box all the time...where would I put this switch? inline with the plugs just like a ordinary light fixture switch?

Brutus,

I had to run a subpanel off my main panel also the sub panel is out in the building...its 88ft from the house..I had to get that underground wire...and that stuff is salty..then I rented a trencher and ran the cable myself.. the subpanel is 100 amp service, I know that sounds like over kill for a 12 x 32 ft building but I also got to heat and air-condition in there... thats why I went with 100 amps... keep in mind it dont use all that.. unless thats the amopunt getting pulled to the building...the biggest thing is going to be that heater/air-conditioner...and the one i am looking at is designed for 120 volt / 20 amps... 14,000 btu. Anyhow... cant wait to get done with all this stuff so I can get to the fun stuff... Laying Track... Smile [:)]

Cheif...

What time zone do you have selected in your profile...the one I am one is wrong I think I got it set to central...cause I thought I heard Eastern and Central were now the same time zones...I may be wrong.

I use a wireless touchpad that looks like a wall light switch for (emergency) layout shutoff.  Its a switch in a wall plate form that sends a wireless RF signal to a relay box that is plugged into a regular wall outlet, and a surge strip is plugged into that.  Attaches to the wall with really sticky tape.  It simply shuts power off to the power strip.  Controls up to 4 relay boxes at 15A  each if you need more than 15 amp.  Its a real quick and easy way to do it, and it looks pretty good.  They also have keyfob controllers like your cars keyless entry that operate the relays if you prefer to do it that way.  You can find them in stores at Christmas time especially.

I hope that Hurricane Ike goes out to sea and weakens!!  We don't need a replay of Hurricane Andrew!!!  I was there during all of Andrew, lived in Naranja Lakes which is only three miles north of Homestead. Guess you could say I was 'riding the storm out', there's a song by REO Speedwagon by that name.

Got the financial monkey(Comcast) off my back yesterday!! Comcast has to be the worst nightmere company I have dealt with, installation delays, wrong wire routing, wrong cable hookup.

I'm on Eastern [yes I woke up from reclinerizing at 2:30 AM].  Now on the power to layout.  I do "overkill" when it comes to electrical wiring.  I have 240 V running to the main area of my layout and terminated in a small breaker box.  One side with 15 AMP breaker is for the transformers and train electronics [aux. transformers, TIU and Legacy/TMCC bases] and the other side is a 15 amp breaker that controls the electrical outlets along the edges of the layout.  Throw the breakers, all is off.  BTW: the equipment ground [third wire] is run all the way back out of the house and bonded to the main driven ground to the house [which is also bonded all the way back to the house's main pannel].   I also have ground planes in all corners of both rooms, on each side of the layout in the big room between the main lines and in the tunnels.  These ground planes are tied into the same ground going outside to the driven ground.  Sure helped my TMCC signal problems.  Like I said, over kill.

Good Morning from cloudy Southern Ohio,

Off today and got a pretty long list of stuff to do.  But like Steven Covey says, first things first, so I am checking in with my train friends. Big Smile [:D]  Then re-glue the windows into the 654, somewhere along the end, sweep the floor and laundry Whistling [:-^]

The master on off was a topic in CTT Q&A a couple years ago.  I liked the idea so I put one in the control panel.  This is an old shot you've seen before and there are a couple more switch buttons added, but the master switch is right on top with a light that is illuminated when the control box is live.

Well need to start on thatist if I'm going to get to the laundrySmile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

May God bless

Morning Boys

Up to 83 today, left for work at 7:45, gray and cloudy, now raining and windy.  Just another day in paradise.  Another week, another storm.Sigh [sigh]  Ike is up next week, then Josaphine.  At this rate, we may get one a week until October! Banged Head [banghead]

I'll be at the LTS tomorrow, then Sunday is up for grabs.  There is a 9/11 Memorial Bike Run about 1 hour south of here, I'd like to go, but the weather....hmmmm iffy right now.

For youze giz askin', my bike is a '97 Harley 1200 Custom.  It is Smoke and Black with 9500 miles.  LOTS of chrome.  It seems the previous owner just opened the accessory catalog and took one of everything.  Mrs Devil said she wanted Chrome.  I told her that Sunday, I'd be in the garage all day, polishing the bike (she was NOT amused...Whistling [:-^])

Yup Dennis, you were right, convention IS next weekend.  We used to stay at the Casa Del Sol.  One year one of the past Chief's bought a HUGE slingshot and water ballons.  Needless to say, after a half hour of that (launching them over the motel onto the boardwalk), the cops showed up and that ended that.  One of the first things I was told to do at Wildwood (when I became Assistant Chief), was keep morale up.  Not hard to do with all that beer....anyway, the guys across the street were giving us greif, I was ordered to moon them.  Myself and 20 of HFD's bravest gave 'em a shot and we were all friends afterwards.  Strange things you do for "morale"Pirate [oX)]Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Time to duck and cover, I have more paperwork to do.  Stay dry!

Rich

Morning, coffee potters.  Well, my son had a migraine at about 3 AM, so I'm off with him today.  He seems to be feeling a lot better and we're watching some dvds now.  I've got a headache from lack of sleep, though!

Granddaughter's first day in kindergarten today.  Better the teachers than me.  Took her to the beach yesterday and then out for ice cream.  That was before she spilled the Coke on daughter's laptop which is dead right now.  I took my eyes off of her for about 2 minutes and she had managed to raid the refrigerator for cold pizza and the deadly drink.  A child's self sufficiency comes with a price.

Hot here and still dry as a bone, high 80s but with temps in the low 50s at night. Our forecasters are calling for the remnants of the first hurricane (Hanna?) to effect us Saturday night.  Ike looks more troublesome.  Prayers for you guyz in Fla. and the rest of the East coast.

Last hurricane to directly hit MA. was Bob in 1991.  I had my BBQ grill set up by my garage doors, coolers stocked and at the ready in the garage, and some lawn chairs set up in there to boot.  Neighborhood buddies driving by right before the hurricane hit stopped in around noon and an impromptu cookout party broke out.  Wives started calling, quite irate.  That was the end of that.  Wife cooked dinner, winds escalated to 100 mph +, power lost around 3:30pm, and it was candlelight for the evening.

Trees down all over the place.  Flooding.  Dog none too happy.  Debris from those who underestimated the power of the hurricane flying all over the place.  I lost some roof shingles and that was it, plus nothing hit the one car I had to leave in the driveway.

Batten down the hatches boys.

Brent....had to frown AND chuckle about your extended work hours due to the new job and the added commute.  Got to thinking about a 60s TV show "Dobie Gillis" and the beatnik sidekick Maynard G Crebbs (Denver?).  "WORK?!?!?!"  Opportunity always comes with a price.  You made the right choice.

Lee, Mel, and Rich.....hoping you escape the worst of it in FLA over the next week.

Chief.....if the hurricanes track westward toward Mexico, Roy will get hit.  If northward, I can use the grits to fill sandbags to keep the pond in check, though I am worried that they will jeopardize the wildlife and the ecosystem.

Jim/Brutus.....the moose in NH trashed my beacon, had been hoping you could track me by using GPS to locate me and my cell phone via location triangulation.

Kurt and Jim Phish.....I have a whole host of daughter childhood medical stories/injuries to boot but won't bore you with those.  The other night she tripped over granddaughter's toys and of course I was there to pack her knee and ankle in ice.....kept swelling down and we avoided a trip to the ER, she's back in action.

Don, hope Chris is feeling better.  He sure has dodged a bullet on this health escapade over the last few months.

MikeC........Lucas is taking "Latin?"  Are you sure that is not code for chasing women on campus?  Sounds fishy to me.

Dennis, sounds like you are really burning the candle on the work end again.

Mitch......fortunately you haven't had to close down the new school yet while you wring out the construction faux pas, so that's a good thing.  How you are going to alleviate the noise factors from floor to floor sounds daunting.

DougM and Sir James.....our MA. politicians who get caught with their hands in the (pick your location) get suspended sentences, fat retirement packages, and then go on to make big bucks hosting radio talk shows.

We are finally able to see the light at the end of the tunnel in the presidential campaign.  Now it gets interesting.  If only we could get some meat to go with all of the rhetoric.

Later gang.

Jack/Rock - did you have any grits?  Chief installed a doohickey that can zoom in on grits from a million miles away!

Played Sid Meier's Railroads some more today.  It is almost like a railroad tycoon game, but the cities are so close together and the gameplay is so loony that it is not fun.  For instance, there is barely room enough between some cities to allow more than one approach to the city, can only switch in from the left or the right, not both, and this limits access to one direction only.  Plus, the game allows you to win by building ever higher and higher bridges over existing track.  Dumb.

WRRRRRA!!!!  Here come the storm.  Who knows where it is going.  Wake Co, Raleigh and Knightdale have already declared a state of emergency.  My Town Manager wants me too.  Having big County Wide conference call at 4:30 with emergency officials.  We'll see.  If I do and nothing happens, then nothing happens.  If I do and something happens, get FEMA funds.  Guess no brainer.   Got REB airforce loaded with GRITS.  Fly over the storm and dump them out.  Will suck all the moisture out of it. Shock [:O]Whistling [:-^] Generator is gassed, boat is full and tractor too.  Got several "gas cans" full sitting near generator.  If it hits, lose power, fire up generator and play trains. Munchkins up at 6:30am...normally sleep 'til 8:00...Youngest went back to sleep at 9:30, cus I couldn't take any more of her tired rantings.  She wouldn't sleep this afternoon, so she decided to wake her sister up from her nap.  Should be an interesting afternoon.

Interested in finding September 1996 CTT article on GG-1.  Please write if you are willing to part with it, or allow it to take a bit of a holiday at my house.

Called Church this afternoon to find out Sunday's service plans and they took down the sound system so they could play Basketball....I need to be there at 7:30am Sunday to re-set up everything...Should make for some interesting dinner conversation with the Bride.

Kurt......I thought Brutus had a special Tardis tracking device that scanned for awaiting passengers with beer.  I got stuck drinking it all myself while running away from thirsty NH moose.

Re the vehicle maintainence subject, my wife doesn't even fuel up her car and usually tells me she needs gas when the trip computer reads 0 miles to empty.  But when she enters or exits her car, she makes notes of absolute cleanliness.  Three weeks ago she pointed out that the driver's side door jam had dirt in it.  The next morning I was standing in the garage and she began lecturing me about her stupid door jam, so I had to ask if it wasn't clean enough for her standards......she hadn't even looked, just assumed I hadn't taken care of it.  Wasn't amused either when I responded that I had licked it clean the night before.
