DougDG and DougM.....if I understand the media reports in the past week, there are no known natural predators for these beetles and they can only be killed by crushing or by incineration of the entire infected tree. They bore into the trees and procreate.
They originated in China and got "imported" here. Watched the opening of the Olympics last night and was thinking about beetles!
Funny thing about non-native species. We've got a moth problem (wintermoth) on the east coast, SC and north to/through Maine, that is wiping out "fruit" trees. "Imported" from Europe. The attempts to at least control them with insecticides has not met with a lot of success. I think about Chief every time he talks about spraying his trees. Maybe he has found a way to control them since the University types have not come up with an answer.
I think the life cycle involves boring into the trees to lay their eggs. The moths consume anything resembling a leaf on the tree, and you can't get at whatever is still resident in the trunk. It is not uncommon to see these suckers flying around outdoor lights even when the outdoor temperatures would tell you they should be dormant during the winter! And I've been spraying in my basement to kill these flying vermin too, even in the winter.
My oldest quanson (sp?) cherry tree isn't going to make it, and I really needed it for backyard shade. They strip the leaves and the tree dies a slow agonizing (for me) death

Jack, I think that's the Asian Long-Horned Beetle - there's a joke in that name somewhere. The only way they are battling that one is to wipe out the trees. This one the bug people say is here to stay - it eats your lawn as a grub and your greenery as an adult - and can only be 'managed' by chemicals - which seem to not be too effective either.

As they say, THE GRASS IS ALWAYS GREENER IN MARYSVILLE, OHIO....a suburb of Roger's Corners.
This might help you. http://www.scotts.com/smg/helpcenter/helpCenter.jsp
You would not believe how much grass they grow in and around Marysville, just for experimentation. When the Goodyear Blimb needs a place to spend the night, their fields become the tie down area.

Buckeye.....doesn't OSU have a reknowned etomology research program?
DougM....regarding grubs, Scotts Grubex when applied properly and timely (first week of July here) wacks the suckers on the first try, just when the larvae are emerging out of the ground but before they turn into Japanese beetles. The grub larvae have already fed on your lawn roots and done some damage to the lawn, and the grass dies because it has no root system (already eaten). But dead larvae means no Japanese beetles this year to go back into the ground and lay eggs for next year.
You wipe out the larvae this year and hope you can re-establish the lawn's root system throughout the balance of the summer and into November with lots of water and low nitrogen, root focused fertilizer (6-8 week intervals). Dead larvae means no Japanese beetles to feast on your trees throughout the balance of the summer.
Then you just need to reapply Grubex annually (next early July) when you realize your neighbors loaned you their grub infestation. Grubex works and can be applied safely with kids and dogs by following Scotts' instructions. Check out their website for all the detail you could possibly need on grubs.
Chief probably uses his 410 on the smaller beetles and the 12 gauge on the bigger suckers, choosing neither to crush the beetles or to burn them out. That way he doesn't have to switch weapons when hunting for varmint. On a related note, DougDG.....you should take Chief with you to the train club meeting, sporting his hunting apparati and bandoleer of ammo, to help positively influence the vote on the tunnel and the choice of (your) alternative.
Doug: Friends of ours are using milky spore. You add this stuff, at certain locations around their lawn, and it keeps the grubs from reproducing.
Kurt
Wow - good luck with the beetles, Doug! Yuck. I've used grubex before with good results, although my lawn has never really been the same. Hey, thanks for that toy train commercial, that's a good one! I sent it to my wife and some other friends to confirm their worst suspicions!
Thanks for taking the controls last night Sir James, I ended up staying up until nearly midnight because the family was watching the Olympics. So, up at 5, at work by 6, then to Home Depot for some drywall and a couple of boards. Finally, I mowed the entire lawn for the first time in a month, all at the same time. The front was really tall this time and it seemed to take forever. Wife bought some taco bell, but I wasn't really hungry after all that work. At least the temp wasn't too bad today!
Oh, my order from Charlie Ro is delayed, waiting on a gargraves dvd I added at the last second. Oh well, it will all show up eventually. Should have made a bigger order though, since I have to wait anyway.
I'm up for banilla whenever Sir James gets home. Anybody have other plans?
RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.
Brutus: I'm in! All we have is left over corned beef and cabbage...Nothing from Trainz today...Hopefully Monday.?
EVENING ALL
Fire it up i'm here. Rained all afternoon, had tents for all the folks, but the rain brought colder weather that most of us were not prepared for. cool temps and wet shoulders equals your cold. roasted shredded pig was very good though. banilla is ready....S.J.

Atomic batteries to power, turbines to speed. Dilithium crystal injector engaged. Matter/anti-matter reaction is at 100 percent. On the way!
What did you order, Kurt?
Evening all!
Back after another absence. Had to go to a trade show last week and couldn't get the Inet access to work. The good news is no e-mail - the bad news was no e-mail - had over 250 work and 300 personal - ugh.
Went to the Ringling Bros circus matinee this afternoon. Most excellent! But they did not have the motorcycles in the cage of death which is my favorite.
Got AT&T Uverse TV and internet yesterday. The new DVR died last night - sounded like a buzzer alarm clock going off. They brought a new DVR this evening. It has an annoying high pitched squeal, so they are bringing another one tomorrow. I tried to avoid having cable TV and had fought it off for years - but my son finally broke me down with a plea something along the lines of he's in high school now and he will only be at home for another few years, etc., etc. So I figure as soon as he is outa here the cable is gone. The wife and I couldn't find anything worth watching last night which sorta confirmed why I didn't get it in the first place. Even the Discovery, History, and Geographic channels seem to be useless anymore from what I saw in the hotel last week.
Just saw Phelps win his Gold in the 400m so that was cool (but it's on NBC).
Had a surprise when I got home from the trip - the Lionel LCCA #209 set finally showed up. Been too tired to open it up though. Have another trip (one nighter) to make Monday - so maybe next week.
Hope all are well! John F - got your e-mail note, but I couldn't get on-line to respond. I plan to be at York in October.
Have a nice evening all!
Regards, Roy
Mornin' boys. Partly sunny & 70, with an all-day chance of T-storms, here in the Mid-Atlantic region. Could spoil my plans for sitting by the pyull later on. Can't complain though, had a beautiful day yesterday for railfanning in Cumberland. Chased WESTERN MARYLAND #25 form Ridgely,WV to Frostburg,MD, back to Cumberland. The WESTERN MARYLAND SCENIC folks really did an awsome job restoring it. Some good CSX action was had, and caught both e/b and w/b CAPITOL LIMITEDs in one day, which ain't easy. Will post some pics on SPF when middle princess gets off her loft.
dbaker - Don't shoot this scenery "do-er" down, just try to steer him in a slightly different direction. I would highly suggest taking a look at UNION PACIFIC (former Western Pacific) Feather River Route's Canyon Sub. Lot's of cliff scenery with lot's of short tunnels (example - Honeymoon Tunnels. Explain the need to keep the track in "daylight" as much as possible.
RockIsland - Paul was my favorite...
laz - If I hit one pole at a time, I'll knock myself silly... Perhaps this running thing isn't for me....I'll just keep logging your progress.
PS KOOLJOCK - You are the man! Great job on the camp, brother, Enjoy your vacation, you certainly have earned it. Keep in touch.
GOOD MORNING ALL
Sunny but chilly, I think all of Mich. was in the 50s this morning. Forecast for today is 72 and this is S.E. mich. We were about 50 miles north of here yesterday where we got rain all afternoon, but there was also much needed rain here as well. We have a birthday party this afternoon for grandson and I am still tired from yesterday, but this one is close to home so no long drive involved. As for my toys I don't think they will be running today.
Everyone have a great sunday.....S.J.
Brutus: Pre-ordered one of these:
Kooljock: Great news on the acreage! Great that you can devote some camp time to those kids!
Brent: Hope you get better soon! Both our kids have the runny noses. Stayed away from Church this am, so we didn't infect everyone.
HI GIZ,
58 and cool here this morning. As I started out on my run today storm clouds were gathering. It was sunny in the east and I was headed west into the storm. Well got r done abreviated to only 4 miles then the rain came. Not to bad but will have to make up milage tomorrow.
KURT, whats with storms in Michigan? Had to halt play of the PGA Championship. O h well will have lots o GOLF to watch today on the vish.
FIFE, yep them telephone poles do hurt.
B Good or B gone,

Morning. Back from Sunday School. Rained hard this morning. Still raining lightly. Just in time as grass was getting dry and garden needed watering again. Sprayed Roundup on pond path yesterday so the rain will make the grass and weeds grow themselves to death.
On the bettle problem. Will have to do what we did on Gypsy Moth. Planes flew over areas and sprayed out a chemical [no harmful to man] that made them sterile. Did simular to the Bole Weevil. Put up chemical stations and the chemical made them sterile. Got rid of both.
While at Miss Enda's, picked up two MTH end of train devices. Wish I had gotten more. Have to change out the rear truck.
Glad to see our Merryland guys are doing so good.
Have a good one.

Good Morning from Blueberryhill....
Another beautiful day in rural, downtown, Ohio. Temp. is 70 degrees. Going up to 75 today, with sunshine. Nice cool breeze blowing.
Today is a relaxing day. Did a few chores this morning and now, I am taking it easy, the rest of the day. Sitting outside is high on my list. I may run trains later this afternoon. Nascar road race today. Not one of my favorites. Ball game. The Indians actually won a game.
I am enjoying SPF today. Nice pictures, Guys.
Dining car has been here and left for " Points West ". Soon it will be time for lunch.
Y'all have a great Sunday.

Kooljock1 wrote:Meantime, I've got a Lionel Baby Mikado all torn apart trying to figure out why the smoke unit won't work. I've replaced the element, and still no power. Does this come from the R2LC or the mother board?Jon
On the engines I have worked on, the smoke unit is powered by the R2LC card. You should be able to trace the wiring from the smoke unit back to the specific pin on the R2LC connector. Carefully, VERY CAREFULLY, measure the voltage using a meter on that pin with the power on. It should be about 9 volts with smoke boost OFF. If it is zero then the R2LC card is bad. If it is 18 volts regardless of smoke boost setting, the card is also bad. What I understand is that the TRIACS that control the smoke voltage are very sensitive. If you have a spare R2LC card you can try it to check voltage coming to the smoke unit. Hope this helps.
fifedog....I have been to the Cumberland Station many times and have never rode the train. There used to be a restaurant in Frostburg by the turntable, but I think it is closed now.
I did several small projects on the layout this weekend while the train room was relative cool. One thing I use is floor shims sold at Home Depot. These are used to set the elevations on the bridge piers. Perfect everytime.
I can't believe it, I have only one locomotive in the shop this year. A smoke unit on the K-Line FP40 went dead. All the other TMCC features work. Replacement is simple, finding the part not so simple.
Purchased a Lionel Milk Car this last week. First one for me. A great looking car.
Have a good week.
