Quentin, appearances can certainly be deceiving, can't they? I've had a similar experience--once, when out walking for my health, I stepped on a patch of snow that looked much like others I had stepped on while moving on--and the ice under the snow threw me, twisting my ankle so I had to hobble home. From what you wrote, you had no difficulty getting back into the house.

Our mail box is right by our front door, and the paper is delivered to the front door, usually landing on the stoop that I built so I could roll Ricki up and down from/to the walk to the carport (I do not have to stoop as far as I did before I built the stoop). In the same subdivision, many people have to go out to the street to get their mail, but on our street (and some others) the mailman comes right to the house.

Jen...Johnny:

I didn't mention getting back in the house, but after a few seconds, {the terrified wife said}, I struggled up, and again struggled back to the front door, and found I was very winded upon getting inside.

My niece from Philadelphia, gathered data and sent it regarding what to look for from a concussion, so far I seem to be doing ok...

Of all times....I've been fighting a tooth ache these last 2 days and of course that had me out of sorts, etc....Using some over the counter stuff to get thru these 2 days....and hopefully will arrive {2mi.}, at our dentist tomorrow morning....This one will be salty....Don't care....Just want relief.

Hopefully tomorrow night we'll be much better.....By the way, never did get the mail & paper out of the mail box at the street.

Good Thursday morning everyone.  Quentin, I hope you are feeling better this morning, from you fall yesterday.  I also hope that you can make it to the dentist today.

Coffee, juices, and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go this morning.  Breakfast is on the serving station.

Temp is about 20, 22 degrees this morning, but the wind chill is down in the low teens.  At least the wind as died down, and no gusts.

Everyone be careful outside today.  Hopefully, you can stay inside where it is warm and dry.  Take care and see you all later.

I am getting here so late today all I can report is that we have already passed our forecasted high and we are sitting at 45°. We have a Chinook blowing here today.

The cold weather east of us has moderated and operations seem to have returned to something like normal. Warming up can sometimes cause the same rail related problems as cooling down. RR management would just love a constant temperature environment.

Quentin, I hope you will be feeling better soon.

Well, I've gotten all the bills paid, went to do a little bit more grocery shopping, and am now back home.  Our high got to 31 degrees today.  When I went to go catch the bus to go to the grocery, I had on my gloves.  While standing at the bus stop, I took them off, folded them up, and put them in my pocket.  Felt nice outside!

Here's the menu for tonight:

1.  Burritos and Tacos

2.  Fried rice:  beef, chicken, pork, and special (beef, chicken, pork and shrimp together in the rice)

3.  Beef w/broccoli

4.  Pepper steak

5.  Moo Goo Gai Pan

6.  Roast pork w/Chinese vegetables

Last night, the three of us watched The Matrix.  Later on this evening, we're going to watch The Matrix 2.  Should be an interesting evening!!

Everyone enjoy, have a good evening, and you all take care.

............Trip to Dentist went well.  My concern was our driveway, with the little snow covered with the hard coat of ice...{that caused my fall},   Did not think the little truck would negotiate getting back up the driveway, but it drove right up and into the garage.

Antibiotics from the dentist....pain pills, and then later to go into the tooth to see if enough can be salaged, and if so he will do what is necessary....Root Canal or whatever.

If I can't control it with the antibiotics and pain pills...guess we'll have to go back and do a plan B.

"Over the counter"--back when we were young, it was called "patent medicine."

I am still in the process of having a toothache late last year being taken care of; the root canal has been done, and I understand that I will end up with a new crown that is bridged to two other crowns. Crown him with many crowns?

It's good to know that you seem to have suffered little, except to your dignity, from the fall.

Good Friday morning everyone.  Hope you all had a very good evening/night.  Well, we watch Matrix Reloaded last night.  It was pretty good. We have a current temp in the low 20s, supposed to get up into the low 40s for a high today.  Then s-n-o-w coming back in tonight.  Supposed to have 1 to 2 inches by tomorrow morning.  Snow is in our forecast all next week, with a wintry mix tomorrow night, Sunday morning, with more snow showers.

Coffee, juices, other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go, including plenty of hot water for our hot tea and hot cider is also available.  On the serving station this morning:  a selection of doughnuts (including the good chocolate ones), bacon, sausage, eggs, biscuits & gravy.

If anyone is in the Louisville, KY area, we have the Great Train Expo tomorrow and Sunday at the Louisville International Convention Center in downtown Louisville.  We are planning on going.

Everyone have a good morning, keep warm and take care.

Morning All:

Well, we had a combination of ice and then a dusting of snow overnight here in Alamo City.  The TV is reporting very treacherous driving conditions.  They have closed all our major freeways in the city...requiring anyone brave enough to be driving to use access roads instead.

Doesn't look like I'll be going in to work today.

Everyone be safe out there!

Much warmer today (23F!), but windy.  Could be interesting if the snow blows around.

Headed to the railroad shop tomorrow - the 12":1' railroad shop.  I think I've got some cabinet repairs in one of our snack bar cars on tap for me.   We'll also be working on getting one of our "new" locomotives ready for paint.

I think I will try to get out today for first time since Monday.  Mostly for the squirrels and birds - to buy corn, seed and peanuts and some for the people.

It is going to be in mid-30's with sunshine!  I think I can safely say we might just be a little closer to spring?

BNSF has been very, very busy since snowstorm.  Heard the motors all day yesterday and last nite.  They are tapering off the whistles (closed xings and wayside horns) more all the time.  Getting quieter.  So sad.

Good morning to all.   And thanks for best wishes on my "different" experiences here recently.  We're trying our best to keep "it" under control.  Going to stop at the pharmacy this morning to fill another prescp. for different kind of pain pills than we have here at home, so we'll have all options to help control this situation.

Yes Jen it is a molar that's had attention before and a tooth one would like to preserve.

It was 11 degrees when I first looked this morning, with beautiful sunshine in a clear sky.

And Murray....Your correct..."the little truck that could"....It does have positraction, and as long as one is easy on the throttle, it does fairly well.  Have 140# of sand bags way to the back of the bed and despite it's rather wide tires, I get around in this flat country pretty good with it.

Debated yesterday morning whether to take the car...which is AWD, but decided against it as I've never driven it under these circumstances.  Decision worked out well.

I note even down in Houston {Houston Ed's place}, there was school closings....This has been a far reaching mess for many people.

But today.....The sun is shining.  Best to all.

Mookie, glad you able to get out in the sunshine today!  Right now, we have nice sunshine showing out the window.  Don't remember which night the weather guessers said, but we are to have at least one night with the temp dropping down to 5 degrees.  About the time we leave for the Train Show tomorrow, the rain/snow mix should be tapering off to plain ole snow.  Predicting 1 to 3 inches of snow for our area.

Our Friday Fish Fry is now under way:

FISH:  Cod, Perch, Salmon, Talapia, Haddock, Halibut, Flounder

SIDE DISHES:  Baked beans, cole slaw, fries, cornbread, hush puppies, corn on the cob, breaded fried mushrooms

DESSERTS:  Pies:  apple, blueberry, pecan; Cobblers:  Peach and cherry

Everyone keep warm, have a good afternoon, and take care.

Well, for the second day in a row we have exceeded our forecasted daytime high. It is now 48° with a strong Chinook wind blowing from the west.

I have been having to do all of my computer work on this computer except receive my e-mail, which I have to do on my laptop. One thing led to another yesterday, and this morning I was faced with 81 messages, and none of them spam.

I've still got a lot to do before supper so I will have to run.

Fire department has a new toy, which I mounted in our Rescue truck today - a thermal imaging camera.  Sees heat, not light, so you can "see" in the dark, through smoke, etc.

While I was working on that we got dispatched for an auto accident.  Turns out it was almost a bad one - drive had apparently blacked out.  His wife was able to grab the wheel and avoid a nasty head-on collision.  Instead they ended up in the snow at the side of the road, about 40 feet off the edge of the road.

Off to the railroad tomorrow.  Not sure what I'll be doing for sure, but it'll be work regardless.

Sunday it's a benefit for the family that lost their house to a fire at the beginning of the year.

Word of the day in Mierlo-Hout seems to be "freight."  I've had the cam on in the background for the past couple of hours or so (it's 3 AM there right now) and have seen two or three passenger trains - and a good half dozen freights.

And what appeared to be an ambulance, running lights and siren across the crossing.

I've heard sirens a couple of times before, but never an emergency vehicle itself.

They seem to run their freight later in the pm so they stay out of the way of the passenger (commuter) trains.

I have seen several ambulances but over a period of a long time watching.  Have yet to see a fire truck, tho.  Their main drag is the one that crosses the tracks.  Actually saw one a day or so ago that got there just as the train was almost thru the xing.  Only had to wait a few seconds.

Hobby had dinner in the nest cam about 4-5 pm their time.  Not sure what it was but it seemed to be tasty.  Ugh!

Well, I am back after another stay in the hospital with the kidney stone. Turns out Obama sez I gotta pay for this stay cause I didn't wait for 30 days since the last stay. Don't ask my opine of his majesty....

We missed the big storm, but got some rain and wind, and tonight, it is 39 and raining like mad right now. The girls refuse to go out in it, which makes life interesting, to say the least.

Take care

Good Saturday morning everyone.  Current temp here in Louisville is around 33 degrees, and woke up to light rain falling.  The guessers now say the snow will be light, and won't be in here until mid morning/early afternoon.  Predicted snow total:  less than an inch.  Think I'll see what we do get later.

Walt and I are anxiously awaiting going to the Train Show.  Sarah got called in to work this morning, so she won't be able to go with us.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  Saturday brunch is on the serving station, ranging from fresh fruits to biscuits & gravy, fried ham, bacon, sausage, pancakes, waffles and all the rest.

Tom, sorry to hear that you've been back in the hospital!  But, glad to hear you are back home!!  Take care of yourself, okay?

Everyone enjoy your day, keep safe and see you all this evening for our pizza fest.

Mookie:  I have been on ice, and it's not fun, I stay off of it when I can, even packed snow can be just as slippery, as I found out last winter on a trip to Maine.  The trick is to go very slow, and not make any sudden moves.  Of course, most four-wheelers don't understand this......

At home now, relaxing.  Not much planned for today, other than putting car storage carrier number four together, and filling it up.

Well, breakfast is ready, see everyone later.....

Good morning from Austin, TX.  Limited internet connectivity has precluded me from doing much on here but I will say this: I can't wait to get back home.  It's been a long 4 days and, yes, I miss snow!  I'll grab a light breakfast and get ready to head to the airport.

Well, the Chinook has ended. This morning it is 33° with a NNW wind of 16 gusting to 24 mph with snow for the rest of the day. Windchill is 21°. A typical Calgary winter, two days of Chinook, followed by five days of winter

Dan, I had thought maybe you were in Texas to see the Super Bowl, but I see you are heading home. From what we read in the news here it would have been better to play it in a location that is used to having snow. Sounds like they are going to have more trouble getting people to the game. After they are inside at least then everything should be OK.

There are more avalanches and highway closures in the Rogers Pass west of us, but so far no talk of rail line blockages.

Going to rest up today after all the errands I ran yesterday.
