Good Tuesday morning everyone.  Currently 24 degrees here in Louisville this morning.  Our "high" today is to be 25 degrees.  Bruce and Mookie, thanks for the anniversary wishes.

Had some winds last night that dried all the moisture from the streets and sidewalks.  So JCPS is open, kiddoes will have to get up out of their warm beds and go to school this morning.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  Regular breakfast menu is also ready and on the serving station.

Everyone have a good morning, and I'll see you all this afternoon, after I finish with Tuesday Produce/Bread,Pastry Trucks.  Take care, and see you all later.

Snowed all night, and it was in the 30-ish range until around midnight, so it was nice and slick.  Dropping now, very quickly.  Out at 0600 for an accident (due to slick roads and an inattentive driver) and it was +15F.  Now down to +7F at 8AM.  It'll be interesting to see how cold it eventually gets.

Gotta love fire-pager-as-alarm-clock...

Breakfast out of the way.  Too early to check the mail.   Project, or easy chair?

Hokay, who left the freezer door open??

About 9 here now, not going very far upwards today, will be below zero the next few nights.  Would love to relax in the easy chair, but 1.  do not have an easy chair, and 2.  have to pack up and head out to the semi for another month to make some money.  Not sure which way I want to go, with the storm headed into the south, and the cold up north.  Will see where the road takes me....

See everyone later.....

Alert to nestcam watchers in NL:  2 Hobbies are in residence.  Might be a mated pair.  Eggs to follow?

#5 is off, but this is not unusual.  And they moved the canal camera up off the ground.  Watch for more ducks and their majestic kingfisher bird.  He is beautiful and quite talented.  And the resident rabbit that travels up and down the path just beyond the canal.

Camera #1 faces west, so will have some problems in the late afternoon coming up.  They move the camera to different spots when that happens.  Gives you a better idea of the surroundings.

Train whistles quiet this morning.  Think they froze in mid whistle.  Warmer days coming starting tomorrow.

Morning all, except to those in the Eastern and Atlantic Time Zone where it is Good Afternoon.

0° now with a NW 8 mph wind and a windchill of -13°. It is sunny and clear.. Sometimes on days like this, with the Sun reflecting off of the fresh fallen snow, it seems you need sunglasses more than on a hot day in summer. I will have to remember to bring mine when I go out later.

Yesterday after my second post here I was on the phone and you could hear snowblowers starting up everywhere. People were getting home from work and starting up small buzzy sounding ones to clean the sidewalk in front of their houses, and businesses were starting up larger ones, like the one to clean in front of our apartment building. It made for an interesting effect as everyone was doing it at different times, and in the cold the sound really carries. It is a variation on the weekend lawn cutting ritual.

Well, I have to get ready to go out. Hope the roads still aren't too bad.

Afternoon/evening to all.  It's been a b-u-s-y - b-u-s-y afternoon.    After I got back from the Community Center, started in on laundry:  bed linens plus a few odds and ends of Walt's and my clothes.

Produce went well this morning.  Despite the temp being in the low 20s by 8 a.m., we had 59 people turn out this morning.  Potatoes, sweet potatoes, iceburg lettuce, radishes and oranges were on the Produce truck; bread, bagels, muffins and cheese danish on the Bread/Pastry truck.

I want to apologize to Jack Kelly (dining car).  I forgot about his birthday today.  Jack, I'm sorry I forgot this morning.  Wishing you a Happy B-Day [bday[] and many, many Happy Returns for the day.  Hope it has been a very good day for you, and wishing you many, many more birthdays to come!!

Supper menu tonight:

1.  Burritos, tacos, chimichangas, fajitas, enchiladas, Spanish rice, chopped lettuce w/diced tomatoes

2.  Leftover pork chop abracadbra w/broccoli, peas & corn, mashed taters & gravy, and crescent rolls

DESSERT:  Chocolate birthday cake w/white icing and ice cream.

Everyone enjoy your evening, keep warm and take care.  See you all later this evening, or in the morning.

Good Wednesday morning everyone.  Cloudy skies with a temp in the teens, w/wind chills in the single to low teens.  Supposed to get a little bit more snow  starting sometime later this afternoon.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  Breakfast is on the serving station.

Hope you all had a very good evening.  Didn't watch the UK basketball game last night (didn't start until 9 p.m., was too tired to stay up.  But did hear this morning that they won!!

Everyone have a good morning, keep warm and take care.  See you all later.

Good Morning. 9° here, high 27° Clear for the next few days. Chinook starting up, and highs should be above freezing tomorrow.

I have been having real problems with this site the last three evenings. Sunday and Monday night were dreadfully slow, but I wanted to reply to some posts yesterday, and i couldn't do it. Between about 8:45 and 10:30 PM MST I tried to get on to the site and it took forever. I tried to load the homepage, then the first of the news articles, and then reload the homepage. I tried several more times later on and still no luck. Just enough comes down the pipe, as it were, so I don't get a server not responding, or a timed out message, but it is not usable.  I have had no trouble getting on other sites, and I tried a random sampling of bookmarked sites I don't often visit, and I had no other problems. Has anybody else been experiencing this?

I got in a little train watching yesterday. On the way home, I came up on a line of cars that had just started moving after a WB grain train had passed, when it came back over the crossing to back down into Alyth yard.  Trains from the north have to come west onto the mainline, and then back into Alyth because the east leg of the Red Deer Sub. wye is so tight, it has been pretty much obsolete since the railway switched from 4-4-0's to Ten-Wheelers.. And the land acquisition costs to fix the problem would be prohibitive.

And was it ever a big train. Two GE's on the point and one more as a DPU on the end. Three General Electric units coming off of that line, means you are talking about a lot of grain. Somebody will be busy baking bread!

Hope everyone has a good day.

Bruce

Bruce - I had a lot of trouble with my hotmail yesterday.  A little trouble with Trains yesterday and today.  I am not sure if it is cable company, cold weather or sunspots.  Probably all 3.  My software worked just fine; scanned puter - no problems; deleted files - but I do all this regulary and my puter shows that it is right where it has always been - fast.  So figure it is the former.

Do you run a lot of DPU's up there?  We run about 97% DPU here, but then we run coal and grain with mixed in 3rd.  Our coal is almost all DPU and our grain is usually just as long, but runs with 2 on point and no DPU.

Maybe because coal goes east and west and grain goes south (downhill) Laugh

CP started using DPU's west of Calgary in the late sixties. Although then they were called Robots and Slaves. But their use in the other three direction has just exploded in the last three or four years. As the TRAINS article mentioned a few months ago, all of the benefits of using DPU's are being taken advantage of by CP.

I will be interested in seeing if anyone else has been having site problems.

Mookie, I'm chanting that line myself!!   Hopefully, we can all survive the next 5/12 weeks, when the official day of spring begins!

The menu for the rest of the day:

1.  Sloppy joes w/your choice of sweet or dill pickles on the side, fries and slaw or salad.

2.  Reuben sandwiches w/tater chips

3.  Chili (mild) w/your choice of regular saltines or oyster crackers

4.  Oyster stew w/oyster crackers and salad

Snow hasn't started in our immediate Metro area yet.  I did hear at the beginning of the Noon News that one school district (thinking south of Jefferson County) will  be dismissing early.  Do know that south of Louisville, from Bullitt County on down south of us, are to get like 2 to 3 inches of the snow coming in.  The guessers are still predicting trace to no more than 1 inch for us.

Everyone enjoy your afternoon, and take care.  See you all later.

Whoooo-eeee!  It may be just a blip on the national radar,

but we're getting hammered here.  Schools and businesses closing, cars off the road.  I'm about to head out to the driveway for some more quality time with the snowblower (already took 5-6" off this morning).

The round table has a hole for an umbrella (I don't have an umbrella for it).  Until this mornings snow (which has a little wind along with it), you could still see the "hole" in the "donut."

Worse - the "lake effect" warning doesn't kick in for better than an hour - hate to see what that's going to look like!

Tree - tie down Toto - you ain't in Kansas any more.  You are on someone's list!

The last snow storm missed us - just an eyelash to the west and then all south of us.  I'm relieved.  Could be close to 60 right after weekend, but someone whispered that there is another big front coming in from out west.  So I am preparing for 60-40 - 60 degrees and sun on one day and 40 below and snow/wind on the next.   Blindfold

Just remember - whatever we get will be passed on to anyone east of us, which seems to be almost the entire nation.

We must be important - we even got mentioned in the NWS update on the lake effect band.  It's supposed to move south a little later, but for now, it looks like another visit with the snowblower...

Thanks, Murray. I did not recognize the second composition, but the fugue is quite familiar.

Quentin, I trust you an Jean are surviving, and she able to some things for herself and will not wear you out taking care of her.

I went to my chemotherapy oncologist this afternoon, and she gave a good report from what was immediately evident from the blood drawn today (five years since the removal of a foot of sausage casing). If the report after my next visit (six months) is also good, I can take a year's vacation from visiting her.

Good Thursday morning everyone.  A very ccccold morning (for us) at 10 degrees above zero.  Wind chill is right around 0.  Supposed to see plenty of sunshine today, with a high in the mid 20s.

Larry, I know you're tired of the snow, also.  But, I'm glad you have that  snow, and not us.  Smile, Wink & Grin

Quentin, I'm glad to know that you and Jean are making it, in your recoveries.  Murray, I'll be sure and check out your links to the organ music after the blower on the furnace shuts off (it's loud, and you can't really hear anything when its running.)

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  Breakfast is on the serving station.

Everyone have a good morning, keep warm, take care and see you all later.

Aaaaaaah!  There's a giant glowing orb in the sky!

Oh.  That's the sun.  Wish it would warm things up a bit.  Almost 9 AM and it's all of -14F...

CW - I'm not really tired of snow.  It's kinda fun playing in it.  You just have to give it the proper amount of respect.  It'll all be gone before we know it.

Joe - they have been talking about dynamiting the Platte - a spring event.  Wonder if the Mighty Mo is suffering from ice?

Having company tonite.  Must beat the rugs, wringer the laundry and bake bread/cookies.  Or maybe just take a good nap so I can keep up with the conversation.

By reports on here, I know other areas are having worse cold than we, but it certainly was not "warm" here this morning.  At 8 am I noted our instrument read:  -0.2 degrees....That's the coldest for us this season, and I just have  a feeling that might be the turning point, here for low temps this season.

We're getting along in February now, and we've been below on temps quite a bit, and so much more precip than normal, and it wouldn't surprise me a bit if we might start to see it moderate going forward.

Today, we're to experience the beginning of a "warming" for the weekend.  Yes....somewhat above freezing.  That means, finally some of this ice under the snow may start to give up.

There certainly has been a lot of load on building roofs from the ice weather over a week ago, and it has taken it's toll on some in the area.

But ice and people combination has really been a factor....including us.

CW....thanks for the comments.

This morning, we have beautiful bright sunshine blaring in on us here in the home office....That will be a plus for today.

I note on the computer here, a report of a nasty gas explosion over in Allentown, Pa.....some fatilities, and some homes destroyed and many damaged.  That's the city Paul North resides, or in that area.

This latest weather system passed under us...{south}, and we had nothing from it, but seems it has hit hard in some parts of the south again.

The snow sure was crunchy under my feet as I headed to the mail box in the past hour....Easier walking than when it's wet snow.

I note on Larry's "round table" snow pic from yesterday, that looks like one foot, plus several more inches of snow......I'm familiar with snow like that back in the home area of Pennsylvania, but it's certainly not normal in this area.....Avg. annual snowfall here:  27".

Morning all! Thanks for the Coffee CW! School seems to be going well. Can’t wait till Friday! Might go watch some trains this weekend. Can’t wait till this cols snap goes away that’s for sure! I had –7* at the house this morning. Larry, hope that you all will be safe after that storm! We are recovering after a huge ice/sleet/snow storm here. You can’t shovel the snow because massive slabs of ice will come up, and won’t break down to a “shovealble” pieces. Have a safe day all! -Justin

We are up to a balmy 21 degrees here in Louisville.  Walt says he need to go shirtless outside (definitely only kidding!)  Kidding aside, we only have to dress in one layer less in the way of clothes today.

On tap for lunch and the rest of the day:  Chinese.  Here's the menu:

Appetizers:  Shrimp egg roll, roast pork egg roll and fried wonton

Soup:  Wonton, egg drop, chicken noodle and chicken rice

Fried Rice:  roast pork, shrimp, beef, chicken and vegetable

Chow Mein:  Plain, roast pork, chicken, beef, shrimp and house special (which is a little bit of all the above listed Chow Meins

Sweet & Sour:  Pork, chicken and shrimp

Lunch/Dinner Combinations:

1.  Moo Goo Gai Pan

2.  Kung Po Chicken

3.  Seafood Combination

4.  Pepper Steak

5.  Boneless Spare Ribs

6.  Beef w/broccoli

Everyone enjoy, have a good afternoon, and take care.
