Quentin, ice storms were not good back when we were young, but at our home we did not rely on electricity as much back then as we do now. We used it for lights, the radios, and the refrigerator; even after we got an electric range, we could still cook on the dining room stove (wood) or on a kerosene heater. My grandparents did have an electric water heater--but it was still possible to heat water on a wood or coal stove.
The last time our power was out for a day or more, I had no connection to the internet or such, but Ricki did. We kept the living room warm (no electricity to run the gas furnace blower or to turn the furnace on) with a kerosene heater we had bought many years before and had not used. We also have a one-burner sterno stove (don't try to cook anything quickly on it). And we could warm the bathroom with hot water (gas water heater).
Johnny
Johnny.........I've thought about purchasing one of the modern Kerosene stoves....The round one about 2 or 3 ft. high. I'm sure they are pretty safe, but just can't make myself purchase one. Guess I'm a bit on the caution side.
That would take care of our needs....Our house is total electric and well insulated, and we could just concentrate on one room....Might have to go ahead and get one if this kind of weather becomes more frequent.
I've got gallons of water drawed, for flushing....and we've plenty of drinks, food....just no back up for heat.

While they're predicting upwards of a foot of snow and some wind for us, it rather sounds like just another winter day, despite the winter storm warning. The kids'll probably have Thursday off from school.
Stores weren't bad tonight. Had to have a couple of things anyhow, so made sure I had enough to muddle through.

Good Tuesday morning everyone. 37 degrees currently here in Louisville, w/light rain. Those of you who are on track for this mess, please be careful. Want everyone to be safe and sound.
Coffee, juices, and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go. Good breakfast on the serving station.
Have put a couple of big pots to cooking/simmering on the stove. One has vegetable beef soup and the other has mild chili in it. I'm also open for any and all requests any of you may have for today.
Everyone have a good morning, and I'll see you all after Tuesday Produce/Bread, Pastry Truck are over. You all take care.

Still have power.....Lucked out on that overnight. Received about an inch of frozen something, whatever it might be called. Power lines don't have a heavy coating on them....That's a blessing. But...we're not out of the woods yet....Some States west of us are in blizzard conditions. If we can get thru the next 24 or so, and not lose power, then we'll breathe a sigh of relief.
One can walk on top of the "old snow" now with the coating it received last night, without breaking thru. Our little pup finds that seems to be a hindrance to find just where she needs to be to do her outside business. Temp. right around the 20s now....and will gain just a bit today.
It is so nice here today (relatively) that I feel bad posting here. Currently it is -2° F. with a high of 17° F. forecasted. It is clear and calm.
I checked around and I don't yet see any trouble for CN or CP, but based on the news, that is very likely to change this afternoon. Everyone stay safe and most importantly, warm.
Oh, by the way Johnny, you don't need to worry about converting Fahrenheit temperatures to Celsius, I was either 21 or 22 when we converted here in Canada, so I can still remember what the temperatures you nice folks post here feel like.

Denver and the front range are finally catching up on winter. Minus-seven degrees (F) at noon and it won't go above zero today. The local railroads, including the light-rail/toy train technology, are struggling with switch adjustment and rail pull-aparts. Lurch even grumbled a bit when he got started at sun-up.

Hello folks! I've finally made it back in here. Glad I put the soup and chili on this morning: at least you all have had something to tide yourselves over!!
We currently have moderate rain falling, and temps varying between 41 and 45 degrees locally in the Metro Louisville area.
We had 50 people show up for the Produce and Bread/Pastry trucks this morning. On the Bread/Pastry truck, it was mostly the Thomas English muffins, danish pastries, chocolate doughnuts and round small packs of 'sandwich' bread: no crust along the rim. On the Produce truck, we had: potatoes, 1/2 pints of orange juice, iceburg lettuce, oranges and the big bags of cole slaw mix.
Did manage to make a grocery store run, around 1:01, and got a few things for us to have here at home. Think I got enough to last us for a couple of days, when I have more moolah in the bank. (ha ha)
Everyone have a good evening, keep warm, and take care.
Touch and go here weather wise....Frozen precip coming down, not sure what it should be called. Our concern is keeping the power on. So far, so good......Latest indicates this will become snow about 2 am, and we think that is less of the two evils.
If our power structure can survive the night......and we're just getting snow tomorrow...{3 to 5"}, or so, and the snow doesn't bring down a limb at a critical location of a power line....{lots of if's}, maybe we'll hang in there.
This area was certainly cleared of many, many trees / limbs with the ice storm of 2005, and then Asplundt worked in this area for 6 mo. to deal with all that damage....That cleared much of the limbs that were above power lines then, but now....that's been 6 yrs. ago and more growth certainly has {by now}, taken it's place....At least some of it.

Hi Quentin:
I have WBBM radio from Chicago streaming on the computer, and the weather there is horrible.
Here is South Central Texas its bitter cold. The temp is currently at 25 and dropping. Expecting to be in the mid teens by morning. Thats pretty cold for this part of the state.
We may even have snow ourselves by weeks end here.
Be careful up there!
Well, they told us the winter storm would be here around 0100, and it looks like it's right on schedule. It remains to be seen how different it is from any other winter weather we get.
None of the schools appear to have decided to close in advance of the storm.
Picked a new toy for the fire department tonight (something we'd ordered) - a thermal imaging camera. They're really neat, albeit expensive.

Thanks Murray......Surviving so far. These extremes in weather seem to be occuring more often...If our power structure can hang together overnight, I have hopes we'll feel a lot better of our chances to stay warm. Our temp now is 24. Snow is to start here about 2 am....
Anything to replace the ice....sleet...frozen whatever will be better....
That does sound rather cool for your area....I'm sure it will warm up in the near future. So hang in there.
I feel for you people who are having the heavy snow and cold weather along with it. The temeperature here this morning was in the teens, and it did not rise much above that--and the wind did blow and the wind did blow. We may have some snow tonight, and we can expect the temperature to be close to zero in the morning; I am going to tell the furnace NOT to drop the temperature during the night (we usually have it drop ten degrees, and it is almost warm again when we get up).
The last ice storm I remember was in north Georgia New Year's Day/ Night, 1961. The night before, I went down to Jesup from Atlanta, on the Kansas-City Florida Special, and I had two full facing seats in a Frisco coach; I do not remember waking until we were almost into Jesup. Going back to Atlanta, I had one uncomfortable seat in an unheated washroom and had the choice of either using my overcoat as a cushion between my head and the wall or wearing it in an attempt to stay warm. When I got back to Atlanta, I rode a trolley bus out to Decatur--and watched the lights dim as we accelerated, and go bright again as we came to a srop; ice on the wires interfered with the transmission of the electricity (and there was much arcing and sparking), but not so much that we could not run. Ah, those days are gone.
Two doctor visits today, one just before lunch (lunch at the hospital where that doctor's office is) and the other in the middle of the afternoon, which put us in the five-o'clock home-going crowd (45 minutes for a 25 minute trip). Take it as it comes.
Well, the truckstop lot was a sheet of ice......
Up early today, checking out weather and road conditions. SE Wisconsin is closed to all traffic, 10-foot drifts and the national guard vehicles are getting stuck. Chicago: Closed. Indy Toll Road: snowpack, with a ban on doubles and triples.
I may try running over to Perrysburg from Kingsville after the sun comes up, CB traffic saying roads are okay if one goes slow. Very little snow forecast for today, which should help get what's left of last night's precip off the roads, and at least get closer to home for the weekend.....

Good Wednesday morning everyone. We have a temp in the low to mid 20s, but with winds gusting to at least 40 mph, if not stronger, it feels like the low teens outside. About two hours ago, we had flurries being carried by the winds. The flurries seem to have dissipated.
Coffee, juices, hot chocolate, hot cider, etc., are fresh and ready to go. Breakfast is also ready and on the serving station.
I was watching the news, trying to catch Punxsutawney Phil, but so far I haven't seen him. Of course, that could have something to do with my being downstairs now, here at the computer.
Hope everyone is staying warm, keep happy warm thoughts, and see you all after a bit. Take care, you all.
Well, the storm has arrived and all the schools (not to mention the Army base and a lot of other activities) threw in the towel.
Haven't driven (nor do I plan to, if I can avoid it), but visibility doesn't really look bad here despite winds as high as 18MPH.
I do think I've heard thunder once or twice, which is never a good thing.
The roads are apparently a mess - hearing some reports on the scanner.
Once I get the paper and the mail, sounds like a good day to stay inside. Plenty of stuff I can do.
good morning
cw thanks for breakfast.we took care of round 2 off the driveway.thankfully the ice came after some snow.guessers say maybe another 1-3 inches today.Matt and all the other schools here are closed. His snow hill is plenty big for him to play on today.off to do some chores inside.
.....We're still warm....we've been blessed by keeping the power supply up and running in our area.
Believe we're thru the worst....I believe that has been {for us}, the ice and sleet mixture on the power lines....and now today it's wind with gusts up to 40 mph will be occuring until this evening.....Hopefully, the power lines can handle that....Believe we're past the ice conditions and now it's some {horizonal}, snow for today....just 1 to 3" bracket.
But tomorrow morning, we'll have extreme cold.....but sunshine during the day. So far, our scattered family has survived pretty good from the conditions. More blessings.
Wish the best to those that might be still struggling
At 1:13, the sun is shining, be it not a warm sun. Wind seems to have died down. Looks like just a slight breeze blowing right now.
Quentin, glad that you all still have power on!
Here is the menu for the rest of the day:
1. Leftover soup and chili
2. Hamburgers and cheeseburgers w/fries (regular and curly) and garden salad
3. Beef tips w/noodles and garden salad, w/crescent rolls
Took laundry up to bedroom to fold and put away, and felt a decidedly cold breeze in the room. Had to put a cover that I crocheted on the front of the air conditioner, to block to the cold air from coming in.
Everyone enjoy your afternoon, keep warm, safe and take care.
Thanks CW re: having power.....Since I wrote that I took a heck of a fall going down our dirveway on my way to the mail box....Flat on my back and head.....Believe the bit of snow, covered with a hard coat of ice saved me from major damage.
Still didn't get the mail & paper....The surface is slick ice on the snow and one must stomp hard to even break thru the ice.....I simply got balance out of control down the slight incline and down I went.
Must keep in mind we're not a teenager anymore.....
Well, it was only a 3.5 hour drive to Perrysburg, interstates were just wet, but it's still worse in the Chicago area, so will just get up early tomorrow morning and blow through after they have cleaned off everything. Load will be late, but that's better than upside down in the ditch......
Think the TA in Perrysburg needs to hire a different snow removal service, they are using a little bitty truck to try to plow the lot out, and they are fighting a losing battle. Truck is sitting in 6 inches of snow, should not have too much trouble getting out later, due to weight in the box.
Back to puttering around, see everyone later......
Modelcar Must keep in mind we're not a teenager anymore.....
Don't we know it! Some days...
Weather wise we are sitting pretty good in Calgary compared to all the places I see on the news. 34° right now, 12:45 MST, with a high of 36° later. It is clear but we have a wind at 12 mph which is giving us a windchill in the high 20's.
It is still very cold east of us, in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and I see where both CN and CP have had to shorten their trains to keep brake line pressure up. Also, winter speed limits are in effect (rail pull aparts). Even if you have the best diesels money can buy, at thirty to forty below zero you can't keep air up in more than about eighty cars (less than 5000 feet).
Which reminds me of something a friend of my father said once, in a way off the record comment. This fellow had been a buddy of my Dad's back when they were both Operators, but he had risen to the rank of Superintendent. They were in an elevator after a particularly bad day of cold weather railroading, and the man said that we can't run trains any longer than we did with steam. And at that point they were using SD40's and -2's.
In the if it isn't one thing it is something else department; later this afternoon the landlord is coming around with an exterminator looking for mice. My part of the building has never had a problem in the 20+ years I've been here, but this outfit convinced building management to pay for a building wide sweep. I will be curious to see what they find out.
I've got to go out and pay some bills later, so I might just have supper out tonight.
had to run an errand in town.csx had a bad night last night. There is a string of ups trailers in the maw siding due to a hot box.main roads are in good shape here.Modelcar please be careful.time to get things ready for tonight.

We had rolling blackouts through Texas today. Power was randomly shut down for 45 minute intervals.
We were just placed on a winter storm watch for Thursday night and Friday. Snow in the forecast. Measurable snow here is a rarity. It does happen, but not that often.
Our low tonight is 18.
Everyone be careful out there!
9 above and sun has been out all day. We have around 7" of snow on top of thick ice. Perfect. They clear the snow and you can skate down the street. Too cold to use melt on it.
Q - you must learn to either hire your mail/paper brought in, train your dog, or stay inside. It isn't worth the hospital bill and pain. Our mailbox is on our small porch wrought iron support. We can use our newspaper/can/box gripper that all old people use, open the box door and get the mail out w/o ever going out on the porch. Just be sure you have a good grip, otherwise the mail will lay there until June!
Randy - I have never and never will figure out how truckers drive on ice. Truckers, police, fire, no one! I have lived with ice for my entire, um, 25 years and have driven around 50 of those 25 years. Hated ice, still hate ice and now won't even ride with Driver on ice.
CW - get a canvas cover and put it on air c on the outside. Just tie on with rope. Then put cover on inside. Then robe, hot chocolate, slippers and a warm hat.
Murray - Houston is not very happy with their weather, either. But I bet you will both get to 60 before we ever get to 40.
Must pull blind and turn on light for nite. Landlord out snowblowing the drive and I don't want to wear myself out watching him work.
Nite.
