Here's Ed's Birthday Dinner:
Steak (ribeyes, sirloin, porterhouse, t-bone, w/all the trimmings: baked potatoes, salad, steak fries for anyone who doesn't want a baked tater.
Several different desserts tonight: chocolate cake, peach cobbler, and a few select "Mexican" desserts are available.
Ed: Hope you enjoy your steak and all the trimmings. Happy Birthday, Ed!!

This has been a different day. This morning, I went in to Salt Lake City much earlier than usual--because two of the therapists wanted to see how she can do at home. I brought her out, they watched her as she moved from place to place as she needs to, and they agreed that she can come home Tuesday. I had to take her back, despite her desire to stay here.
We had a New Year's Eve service at church--and it seems that most of the members had other things that were more important.
We have had snow off an on, but the roads are fairly clear (no plowing has been done on our street, and I give thanks for such would have thrown a great pile onto my driveway apron--after I had cleared it Thursday morning; the street has been salted). In all, today I saw only two incidents which required police attention in my three round trips into/out of Salt Lake City.
Tom, I am sorry to see that the Gamecocks did not snatch the tomahawks off the Seminoles' helmets and scalp the Seminoles. Does Steve Spurrier have any steel spurs for the team? So far, the Southeastern Conference has not done well in the bowls.
Again, I wish a better year for all.

While working on some reports at the fire station, overheard another fire department dealing with an accident that apparently damaged some crossing equipment. On top of that, a patrol car on the way to the accident saw a CSX freight headed that way. A phone call or two later the train was stopped. It ended up sounding rather like the track was fouled.
I didn't manage to jinx us, fire call-wise when I posted our 2010 run stats on the fire department website before midnight. We didn't end up going out, which would have meant having to update the website one last time.
We went out 113 times last year for everything from flooded basements and difficulty breathing to fully involved structures and full arrests. Not huge numbers by some standards, but busy enough for us.

We have a current temp of 55 degrees (was 56 when I awoke at 5:15 a.m.), and light rain.
Coffee, juices, and other assorted morning beverages are fresh and ready to go. On the serving station this morning:
Sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, made from scratch buttermilk biscuits w/sausage gravy, bagels, bear claws, pineapple chunks, papaya, kiwi, and assorted jellies/jams/preserves.

....Partly sunny this morning and now...42 degrees. Believe we'll go down in temp today and on into the week. But see nothing severe in temps headed our way.
But.....The yard and golf fairway behind us is alive with ROBINS this morning....Yes, robins. And watching, they are actually getting worms out of the ground, just like in Spring / Summer...!
We wonder if they are stopped here from farther north and will continue south to better Winter climate....?? We've seen this pattern before...There appear to be dozens of them. We'll hope they know what they are doing. January of course, is our most coldest month on avg.
Today, it is pretty decent for them, but this is January and we know what we'll be getting at least part of the time. Our December has been much below avg. in temp and above in snow fall, so it's possible we'll see some moderating in weather {at times}, this month. It's happened before.
Many other birds around in the yard and fairway this morning too....Including Cardinals.
Good wishes to everyone on here to get a good start in this new year of 1 / 1 / 11....

Our local media indicates the hiring process has begun for our new: Progress Rail Co., coming to Muncie. Also indicates of plans for work to begin by 3rd qtr. Will be interesting to watch.
Quentin, our temp. here is around 50 degrees, with some light rain. Plenty of Cardinals around, (besides the U of L basketball team)(which got beat by the Ky. Wildcats yesterday!!!-Go Cats!!) haven't seen any Robins, guess they by-pass us on their way south.

Slept good last night, until my fingers aching woke me up around 4. Guess I have a touch of rheumatism in the fingers.
Wonder how Tom is doing. Haven't heard from him for a little bit.

Good morning everyone and greetings from WI. Our temperature is now 9F which is up from a low of 6F overnight. Guess we better break out the shorts! I had intended on going icefishing today near Shawano...but re-sprained my left ankle. Anyone got an extra to spare? I'm so sick of that thing being less than fully capable I could scream. Anyway...I hope all of our neighbors in KY/MO survived the severe storms that popped through a few days ago. Sounded pretty scary.
Christmas decorations come down today and then it's time to rearrange the house. I may be lurking for a while. I hope everyone had a great Christmas and a good New Year.

Quentin, I fully agree with you on taking this kind of January weather!! I can take a little snow, but definitely do not want to have to deal with any sleet or ice.

Well, yesterday it was 50 with a bit of rain, today, it's down to 30 (and dropping) and it's "spitting" snow. Points south will likely see some lake effect.
Nice party at a friend's house yesterday afternoon, but the two hour drive to get there (and another two hours back) made for a long day.
I suppose I ought to do something today besides nap...
Good Monday morning, everyone. We have a nice 21 degrees F., this morning, with clear skies and frost. Supposed to make it up to the low to mid 40s for a high this afternoon.
Coffee, orange juice, orange/tangerine juice, apple juice and pineapple juice are are fresh and ready to go, along with hot chocolate, hot cider and hot water for tea. On the serving station this morning: bagels, bear claws, bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, and biscuits w/sausage gravy.
Mookie, your coffee mug is all cleaned up and ready for you! Our rockers are placed by the picture windows, so we can watch the trains, and catch up on whatever we need to catch up on.

Low 20's this morning....lots of sunshine too. So, looks like we're in for a pretty nice January day.
So now I hope much of the nation can look forward to a possibility of a much better new year.
But from what I watched on my morning news / political shows I'm not looking forward to what might happen in our government. My wish is, to look forward and try to work together and fight the issues that are working against us....One example: Expectactions of 4 dollar plus / gal of gas this coming year and on and on......
Fixed a beef roast this morning, first thing, so you've got, for lunch/supper:
1. Beef roast w/mashed taters, beef gravy, broccoli, brussels sprouts, corn, and crescent rolls or dinner rolls, whichever you prefer.
2. Choice of vegetable beef soup w/cornbread or
3. Selection of cold cuts w/all the fixings for sandwiches.
Currently have a temp of around 27, 28 degrees w/sunshine, and breezy conditions. Nice day.
Monday - blah! But I was busy today. Fixed a big veggie salad for supper tonite. Did dishes until I was goofy - er....
It is 40 degrees here! This makes winter so much more bearable.

5:55 AM wake up call. Structure fire, flames visible. Two houses from mine. It was built as a store in 1870, and has seen other uses as well, including the second floor, which served the meeting place for the International Order of Odd Fellows from 1906 until the 1960's.
Due to the many void spaces in this old building, we were there until after 2 PM.
I'm pooped.
Boy, stuff laying all over in this diner, cats, dogs, trees.......
Started work on the second of two spine car kits I have had for over 10 years, but never put together. Also finished up two Difco air dump cars, remounting trucks and couplers on both. Still have about 16 pig flats to finish, on top of a bunch of cars to swap out couplers on. And I haven't even started on the locomotives.....
Tried making chicken and dumpling soup again today, turned out much better than the first time, due to the fact I used a smaller tube of biscuits. Have plenty left for a good lunch tomorrow.....

Hello All! and a belated Happy New Year.
I had to visit after reading about Larry's fire fighting. I never did much fire fighting, and most of my EMS work was in Texas...really cold days were rare and didn't last beyond a few days at a time. Curiosity here...does the water in the tank of the engines/quints, etc ever freeze? I know the water can freeze as you spray it, and I think I remember that hydrants can freeze, but how does consistent freezing temperatures affect the water in the quint?
And I hope you've rested since then. What hard work!

Tina, I can't answer your question. And it is a very, very good one. I would be interested to hearing what Larry and our other current or former firefighters have to say on that subject!! Thank you for asking it.

Quentin, the car is my son's. Pretty neat, eh? My dad had a 69' Dodge Charger. Tony's car is a modern version, of course. But I sure feel fortunate to have been a teenager when those muscle cars were popular.
