Good morning to all....Hope others have beautiful sunshine as we do and it's to continue thru Friday.  In fact. I have been out in the back yard for about a half hour with my shorts on and a lightweight sweat shirt over a short sleeve shirt, and it was pretty nice.

Now....The reason I was out in the back yard, was not very nice.....In checking, and suspecting....Yep,  Mole tunnels...! Almost the same area I fought them last season.  That eradicating got me at least 6 moles...!  Actually all of that group.  The activity stopped after the 6th one.  They can really do damage to a yard.  Have no idea why {in cycles}, they select this yard.....It has been treated for 35 plus years, and thru the years we've believed that has been a deterrent.  But I have my work cut out for me to get rid of it {them}, now as quickly as I can and keep the damage to a minimum.  Want to roll soon and would like to get rid of them first...

So the fight is on.  And I know others near by have had them too, but don't know about any others yet....Just found my own situation this morning.

The eradicating tool is out and will stay out until the activity stops.

Quentin, I know you'll get your moles!

Jack, I hope everything goes all right, at your orthopedist's office today!!  I'll be thinking about you and praying for you.

Mookie:  I'll try to stay out of your way, next time.  That's what happens, on Tuesday mornings, when I'm trying to get out of here, and go get ready for my Produce people.  Speaking of which, we only had 47 people today.  Kind of surprised me, although it should'nt have, since the truck came at 9:07 this morning.  We had just gotten into the gym, and I was turning on the gym lights.  But we got them out, and I was back home, by 9:58.

On the truck today:  apples, carrots, greens, lettuce, onions , potatoes, and sweet potatoes.

Walt has gone to the library, and after he gets home, and rests a bit, he'll be starting his spaghetti casserole for tonight's supper.

So, here's our lunch menu:

1.  Roast beef sandwiches

2.  Grilled cheese sandwiches

3.  Tuna salad sandwiches

All three sandwiches served with fries, and salad or cole slaw, whichever you prefer.

We currently have a temp of 51 degrees, and plenty of sunshine!  But, in the 7 day forecast, they're predicting a high in the 40s for Friday and Saturday, with the possibility of flurries next Monday.

Looks like BNSF had a derailment in Lincoln today. This looks pretty close to Camp Mookie, based on the information in the article.

Kind of cold here today. It's only 40 degrees at noon.

Willy - my daughter just e-mailed me that a friend of hers posted this on FB - wondering if she would be able to get to work thru the mess.  This is the 2nd time in the past couple of years that they have had a tanker on the ground in that area.  I think the last one was more of a drawbar type of an incident.  This looks to be in the vicinity of the hump.  This follows the one a week ago that was more toward our end of the yard - I never did find any info on that one.  It looked like they put some coal cars on the ground and a week later, the mow was still working on the tracks in the area.

Obviously coal doesn't rate a news story like a tanker, but I would have been interested!

Watch site has very mushy ground right now.  Coal gons are rockin and rollin over that area.

An interesting tidbit I fell over was that they seem to just love grubs of all sorts. Even cutworm! Get someone to check for Cutworm and such in your topsoil. If there are a lot of those Cutworms and such in there the dang Moles will be right in there munching them up!Sigh

Spent time today watching the mole tunnels, and did not come across any movement....So, decided to tamp them down, and now watch for action to see if the varmint is still present.   If he {they}, are, they are living on borrowed time.

Sunshine all day today......and just a few minutes ago it was 60 degrees.  It will be difficult to head back into Winter it it tries to show itself again....Right now, we're heading full steam for Spring....and lawn work.

Barry....Yep, I know about the "food" they go after....we've fought them before {got 6 of them last season}, probably the whole family as after that the action stopped.

We're on it as I just related in my post of a few min. ago.....I've been pretty good at spotting the movement and getting them on the spot.  So it's them against me....Hope I win.

Seriously, they can really do damage fast....and this yard has been taken care of for years...so must get it {them}, stopped.

Beautiful day in the north woods of NY.  Despite a statewide ban on outdoor burning, there were several grass/brush fires today in the area.  Hopefully the appropriate authorities will go after them and make an example of them, so others get the message.

Took the Dal to the vet today - he has arthritis and a nerve disorder in his hindquarters.  The arthitis can be treated (med starts tomorrow).  The nerve thing can not, and it is degenerative.   He knows he's not "right."  Still, he's sharp as always, just not as mobile.

No moles here - I'm not sure they'd get through my clay very well.  I have seen the occasional vole, but not lately.

Lots to do tomorrow - better call it a night.

Good Wednesday morning, and HAPPY ST. PADDY'S day to one an all!!

We are starting the day out with 50 degrees, going for a high in the low 60s, with plenty of sunshine.  The nasty and cold stuff isn't supposed to be here until Sunday night, Monday morning.

Coffee, juices hot water for hot tea and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  On the warmer/serving station this morning:  I made some special St. Paddy's Day cupcakes.  There are vanilla and chocolate cupcakes, all decorated for St. Patrick's Day.  There's also some bagels and bear claws.

And I already have our lunch/supper going in the Crock Pots/Slow Cookers:  Irish stew (made with lamb, not beef), along with other Irish dishes.

How many around here, are actually at least part Irish?  I know I have Irish on my Daddy's side of the family and a tad bit of Irish on my maternal grandfather's side.  Also on my mother's side, her mother was 1/4 Cherokee Indian.  The other 3/4 I don't know about.

CW - I have the English fighting the Germans in my heritage.  I can't imagine adding Irish to that mix.  I think part of the English is a smidgen of Dutch - and my Driver is Swiss - ah the peacemaker.

Tree - sympathies to the Dal.  Arthritis is bad enough.  Maybe a walker with a seat like we gave my mother-in-law?

You also mentioned something I was thinking - poor Quentin has moles and because of clay soil here, we don't - at least not in this area.  But was going to ship him some of our voles so he could have voles AND moles..............or not.

Very little Irish in my family, but I'm married to someone who's got to be at least 3/4ths Irish (and a surname of Maher to go with it).

I played "Whack-A-Mole" with 2 up here and that was the end of it. Haven't seen any since then. Checked our soil with an exterminator and found very little in the way of Cutworm or any other thing so "we may have got someone else's issue" as he put it to me

Back yard is a little cleaner once I got most of the broken off branches and various sundry bits cleared out. Now I see we are rather squishy as there is a lot of moisture in the ground---and we do have our backyard lake to contend with-----maybe I'll just start putting in marsh grasses--

As I recall, there's some Irish in my ancestry, but I'm not sure exactly where.  The primary lines are English and French/German (Alsace-Lorraine).  The English side dates back to the 1600's on these shores, the French/German to around 1830.

Then again, on March 17th, we're all "Irish."

Speaking of St Patty's day, our annual barbeque is Sunday.  Hopefully we have a decent turnout.

Gotta see if the Dal finished his "breakfast" (he has to take the med with food, and he doesn't normally eat at any specific time), then go check the mail.  After that, it looks to be a beautiful day, and I've got lots to do.

Good morning. 50 and sunny in Carolina at present. My folks are basically English and Dutch. One family that snuck in about 1900 or so claimed to have traced their lineage back to the emperor Constatine, but I don't see how that is possible. But hey, you may address me as Your Grace, just in case. I woke up with a headache again. Hope it's due to the season change. Everyone take care

Voles......???   I had never heard of those....Thought it was a typo at first, so I looked it up in the dict. and found a description....small rodents, etc....No, the mole{s}, can do enough damage, so we'll not need any of those.

Just came back from taking Jean to the hair twister and partaking of breakfast at our local restaurant where CSX passes, and did see 2 trains {one was all low profile gondolas}, thought a bit strange, and did hear another one while we were at the Hair Salon.....Railroad {same one}, not visible there.

Mole duty:  Returning home, checked the back yard, and sure enough, about 80 or 90' of previously tramped tunnel opened back up....But didn't go to either end of the yard.  Thought I could take some time and see him moving, but did not.  So retramped it, and we go on to the next check a bit later.

Beautiful sunshine again here today with clear blue skies.

It's interesting, what you can find out about one's heritage, isn't it?

I've got the first round of Irish stew on the warmer/serving station, along with something I forgot to mention this morning:  Hot cross buns.  Or, if you prefer, there's cornbread to go with the stew.

I did hear this morning, that our day was to be sunshiny:  but, as yet, have not seen the sun shining at all.  Instead, it's very cloudy and gloomy out.  Current temp is only 51 degrees.

Everyone have a good afternoon, and I'll see you all later.  As usual, I'll be in and out, not necessarily where you can see me.

CW - I have the English fighting the Germans in my heritage.  I can't imagine adding Irish to that mix.

My heritage is Anglo-Saxon (Degges, Scots--my mother's father's paternal ancestors (McIlwain) were from Scotland by way of Ireland; yes, I'm an Orangeman--and Cymric (called "Welsh" by the Saxons) through my mother's pateranl grandfather's ancestry (Jones). Mostly, it is English, and, if I wanted to, I could claim kin to almost anyone whose ancestors settled in Virginia in the 17th century (there are some living today whom I would not really care to claim kin to).

I respect St. Paddy (as I understand the Irish pronouce the diminutive of Patrick); he was a great man who did not shrink from addressing an Irish king concernng his religion. We have eaten our corned beef and cabbage in honor of St. Patrick's Day.

Mookie, speaking of English and German fighting, did you know that King George V of England and Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany were first cousins? and, that George V and Tsar Nicholas of Russia were first cousins (on their mothers' sides)? George V's father, Edward VII, tried to reason with his nephew, Willy, concerning his military ambitions, but Willy would not listen.

Hi All,

A Happy St. Patty's day to you all! No Irish in my blood...it's mostly German with a little sprinking of English. I have a redhead for a girlfriend...but even that doesn't work for me. She's Polish! Wink

Hope you all have a great day!

It's about time to go and check my mole field....I tramped it down {again}, about 2 hrs. ago....being careful, watching as I moved along it for any sign of movement....Saw none.

So....installed the next item in the fight....A mole trap.  One that has 6 long slender nail sized spikes poised above the tunnel and if anything passes under it.....Bingo....So we'll see what has happened as I go check.
