I also want to take a moment to wish Willie a happy birthday! Happy B-Day [bday]Happy B-Day [bday] And I hope your day will be a good one, Willie!

I've eaten grits once before when I had friends who lived in the deep south down in Louisiana, and it was something I didn't care for. Dead [xx(]

Right now we have 50 degrees here in Sioux Falls, and I think it is snowing out in Deadwood in the Black Hills.

I'm gonna be making a trip out to one of our local Perkins restaurants with an application for employment in a couple hours. I'm not having much luck in finding work or an extra employer who will give me the hours that I need, and it's a bit depressing. Last night when I went to bed I found myself wishing I could go to sleep and never wake up! Sigh [sigh] But on the other hand, if I maintain a positive attitude, it should get me in the door somwhere.

The hominy I tried was at a restaurant in Tennessee. It was white and tasted like a corn cob. I guess if it had been with salt and butter, it might have been OK, Plain is for the birds...

Today is quack day, and hopefully, he will take the boot off my hoof and I can get back to living. It's just my luck that a heavy downpour is predicted just when I need to get in the building....

Still just 69 degrees and I don't understand how we can have a thunderstorm with it this cool, but the weather boffins still call for one later.

Happy birthday Willie. All the best from Carolina.

Later.

Tom

Happy Birthday Willie!  I hope that there's many returns for you.

Long day at work today: final prep for the bench press contest and then tomorrow is the big day.  I've got athletes from 3 states coming to the Y.  Hope it goes well!

CN had a coke train trip a detector this morning and they stopped on the south side of Oshkosh.  "Hot Axel detected.  Axel 206."  Funny thing was I know the conductor personally and he didn't find anything when he got there.  He'll have a story to tell at the MR club the next time I see him.  I felt bad for him though: hiking all the way to the 56th car for nothing!

Checked with the birthday boy, and he said the regular fish menu sounded good for his birthday.  We'll just add a couple of his favorite pies to the dessert menu today.

Fish:

1.  Cod; 2.  Perch; 3.  Catfish; 4.  Salmon patties; 5.  jumbo butterfly shrimp; 6.  scallops; 7.  clams

Side Dishes:

1.  corn on the cob; 2.  fries; 3.  baked beans; 4.  hushpuppies; 5.  cole slaw

Desserts:

1.  key lime pie; 2.  zebra brownies; 3.  apple pie; 4.  peach pie; 5.  pecan pie; 5.  strawberry cobbler; 6.  blackberry cobbler

Willy, hope you're enjoying your birthday (even if you are in school today), and hope you enjoy your birthday meal and desserts.

Excuse me, Dan, but the engineer in me needs to be nit-picky.  It seems to me that the math isn't quite right on that one- axle 206 should be the third axle on the 52nd car, assuming the engines are all four-axle.  If the engines are six-axle, then he wouldn't of had to hike even that far.  Or does the detector somehow ignore the engine axles?

Lead unit was IC 1038 (SD70-6 axle), trailing was CN 4916 (GPsomething-4 axle).  So 10 axles for power.  You are more than likely right or closer than I was b/c I was half awake as I typed that.

Not like the axle counts are always right - I've heard accounts of defect detectors reporting an odd number....

Got all of the kids fire safe for another year (I hope).  I do the fourth and fifth grade programs.  The fourth graders get a little fire science and see the engine (pumper), the fifth graders walk over to the fire station and hear about 9-1-1.

Gotta go mow while I have the chance.

Thanks for all of the "Happy Birthdays"! I think the best thing about being 18 is that I'll be able to vote in the election this fall.

Now I think I'll just have some jumbo shrimp, hushpuppies, fries, a slice of key lime pie, and a zebra brownie to sustain me through my work shift this evening. Dinner [dinner]

....I come from an area where one heard of it {Hominy}, more from our elders.  I never wanted to find out how it tasted or what it was.  Never was served in our home as I was growing up.  Just never wanted to know.

Wow....What a week of Dr's and specialists, but the end result has been pretty good.   Also a week of dealing with changing {complicated}, insurance situations.  Still more to do on that.  Looks like that might come out pretty good too.

Then.....I suppose all of us {one way or another}, have had a notch or two of anxiety over first this country's and now spreading world wide....financial situation.  Watched the market {at opening time this morning}, drop more over 700 points in roughly 5 min....!!!  Wonder if that's ever happened before....Then  it came back in the next 10 min. roughly 500 points.....!!!  Hope we soon find a bottom.  This is not fun.

But on the positive side....The sky is clear blue with of course bright sunshine making it a beautiful day....73 degrees right now and looking at projected 80's for Sat. and Sun.

Homecoming parade in our town of Yorktown tomorrow.....what weather for such an event.  Have seen snow flakes on that day in the past.  I probably need to do a mowing tomorrow too.

Last evening, having a snack in the truck at McD's. in town....and next to the NS's Frankfort line an evening train came in from the west and {as they do almost everyday....drop off a cut of cars}, and that brings the engines right up to where we are parked.  All 3 were Union Pacific 6 axle units.  Was surprised to see no "running lights", I'm referring to lights at the steps to get up into the engine, etc....3 of them just sounding like 1 or 2 notch doing their work at setting off cars, etc.....and many NS auto carriers included in the consist of 2 cars permanently connected at the center and riding on one truck....All of the consist sounding smooth.

Late this morning, passing the same area noted {horn blowing right now on that line}, a great % of the train were tankers....Many ADM units, but wondered if some wern't Ethanol tanks.

Good Saturday morning, everyone.  Our local temps are ranging from mid 50s to low 60s this morning.  Going to warm up to the mid 80s.

Coffee and other morning beverages are ready to go; on the warmer bar this morning:  bacon, sausage, eggs, pancakes, muffins, tater tots, biscuits & gravy, bagels & bear claws.

Everyone have a good day, and hope to see you all back in time for our pizza fest tonight.

.....The weekend is here.  Looks like it will be really a nice one.  59.5 right now and 80 expected today.  Good for local homecoming parade and all happenings around it.

Seemed to be quite a bit of traffic on the NS Frankfort line we can hear from here at times yesterday.  Guess this is the busy season for grain cars and now so many ADM and {other}, tanks too.

I grew up in the northeast (New Jersey), and I have this observation regarding grits.

If you should ever find yourself having breakfast with a person from the south, here's a way you can have a lot of fun with them:

Eat a bowl of grits just like you are having a bowl of Cream of Wheat (milk, sugar, and a pat of butter)...and watch their reaction.

Its great fun!

Actually grits go better with scrambled eggs, sausage  and cats head biscuits with country butter and Strawberry Preserves all washed down with some  good coffee. But if you like your grits in a bowl I guess that is just fine, it is your right to do so and I will defend that right you have to be a real American.

Personally I prefer home fries, they have a better nutritional value than ground up scorched corn.

Mr. Joseph:  Didn't you mention a UPS train not long ago?

Caught one today and wondered if it was from you?  Had all pigs (TOFC) lots of UPS and some other goofy ones, had BNSF 610 and 4739 on the headend with UP 7329 up there too.  Was coming from the east - headed south and possibly west or on south.  Sound like anything you have seen?

Did y'all hear The Dog Whisperer - the lady had a previous dog - a female - doberwoman.  Took him a minute before he got it, but then he laughed and I helped him.

I am not going to mug my mailman.  I am going to rope off the porch and ban him.  He walked many miles to put one political postcard in my mailbox one day and an advertisement for old-age insurance on another.  Have threatened to put a garbage can out there instead of a mailbox.  Save me lots of steps!

Off to do damage somewhere!

Hello everyone!  Think we just about reached or exceded our high for this date:  86 degrees here in Louisville today.  Mookie, there are times when I'd like to put our trash bin or the recycling bin, so they can just go ahead and put the garbage (circulars, political ads, etc.) straight into it, and then they can bring the good mail up and put it in the mailbox!  Need any help in the "doing damage" department??

Here's tonight's SATURDAY PIZZA FEST menu:

1.  Anchovie

2.  Cheese w/extra cheese

3.  Goetta

4.  Hawaiian

5.  Calzones

6.  Pepperoni/mushroom

7.  Supreme

And for dessert:  apple, peach and strawberry pizzas.

Everyone, enjoy your pizzas, and have a good evening.

Mookie:

Catshead biscuits are what folks in many parts of Central Georgia call a breakfast biscuit. I picked the phrase up when I lived in Gray, GA (that is a very small town that is on the old Central of Georgia secondary line between Athens and Macon) where I spent my twenties back in the 70's. The term comes from describing a biscuit being as big around as a cats head. They tend to be,as a matter of custom, made with real lard, buttermilk and flour served in pairs with real butter as opposed to oleomargarine and with either sorghum syrup (pronounced surup) or my personal favorite of Fig or Strawberry Preserves.

When asked how I would describe them, the word good is an understatement.

Try them, you will like em. I'm fixin to make up a mess of em for breakfast tomorrow

Home.

Four trains, almost 500 people.  May sound like much, but it was one of our better days this ear.

One train was stuffed - SRO, especially after we picked up the 22 canoes/kayaks and their riders.

The wine train had 68 happy riders (especially by the time we got back into the station.

Time for some rest.  Four Hundred chicken halves await their fate Sunday.

Good Sunday morning, everyone.  Sounds like you all had a very good weekend, if tiring.  Going to be a very warm day today:  calling for at least 86 for a high today.  Going to make it very warm for anyone going to the Great Louisville Fire Drill this afternoon.

Mookie, do they still have lard in the grocery store?  I haven't seen (or noticed) any for a lonnng time.  Although, I have to admit, I don't go looking for it, so it could be there, and I just don't notice it.

Larry, I don't envy you, having to grill all that chicken.

Coffee, juices, hot water for tea are ready.  And on the warmer bar this morning:  bacon, eggs, pancakes, waffles, sausage, bagels and bear claws.

Taking requests for Sunday Dinner, so would like some suggestions for you all, o.k?

You all enjoy your breakfast, and have a good morning.

....When the sun rises here it will work in a clear blue sky.....57 degrees right now but to be about mid 80's today.  Did get to 85 here yesterday.  My kind of October.  We get this kind of weather occasionally in this month.

Did get my yard mowed late yesterday afternoon and it really looks nice now.  Shrubs are all manicured for the cold season, so they will look like that until they start to grow in the Spring.  Guess that's about all I can do now.  No leaves to take care of yet but they will be falling soon.  Some trees are golden and some now have shed some of the covering, but not right here.....

Morning CW, Q, all. At present, 64 degrees with clouds in Carolina. My desktop weather messed up big time this morning, and I had to change to the weatherbug. It is a bit horsey and needs some time for me to figure it out. For some reason, it wants to switch to Columbia all the time.... CW, breakfast sounds good. Thanks. Everybody take care.

CW - yes they do still carry it.  It is usually kept in a kind of out of the way place and you won't find shelves of it, but you can still buy it.  Some people still use it for pie crusts, but it is one item I just can't eat w/o problems.  I have a pretty much cast iron digestive system, but lard can penetrate it.

Morning all!  Sunshine and 70 already.  Heading to upper 70s for highs with blue skys.  I won't look this gift horse in the mouth!  Heading out to the rifle range to sight in the .22 for next weekend excursion.  It'll be good to be in the woods sniping tree rats again.

Fortunately for me the road to the rifle range is within easy eyeshot of the CN mainline so I'm hoping to snipe some GEs and EMDs with the Canon (not the cannon-I'm not one of those guys!) since the light will be right.

Mookie, I can remember my mother used to buy lard by the 5 gallon can, and can also remember seeing them in the store and helping her to get it into the house. One day, I stuck my finger in it and took a taste. That was the last time for that effort! Think tho, that back then, people ate lard and fatback, eggs and all kinds of grease, and they died of old age in their 90s some of them. Nowadays, with our crisco, mazola oil, broccoli and egg beaters, folks are keeling over in their 40s..... There must be some corelation. TTFN
