Well, Mookie, thanks for the update on lard in the grocery stores.  All Mama ever used it for was frying chicken, steaks, pork chops.  The only time she used Crisco, was when she didn't have any/or enough lard left.  I've always only used Crisco shortening.

Since Larry is out the firehouse(?) grilling chickens, guess we'll make do with some grilled chicken from our grill out back, here at the Cafe/diner.  And, for anyone who doesn't have a taste today for grilled chicken, we also have some fried chicken.

Side dishes:  corn, brussels sprouts, green beans, apple sauce, cole slaw, garden salad, mashed taters w/gravy

And, to commemorate National Fire Protection Week, there's some chili for anyone who wants some.  (Mild, of course, no spicy hot today, unless you want to add some hot sauce to your chili.)

Desserts today:  apple and peach cobblers w/ice cream, and chocolate cake and a spice cake w/sour cream icing.

While we are on he subject of what we remeber as good food to live with besides the occasional squash (or corn)casserole let us not forget the following from grandmaws (and my mothers for a time)kitchen:

Cracklin cornbread, bread sticks, hoe cake, yeast rolls, summer squash, newt potatoes, turnip greens with pepper sauce and potlicker to go with fired chicken, pork chops, ham, roast, quail or even rabbit.

Food fit for a king

Well, we sold all the chicken (tried to save some for the Cafe, to no avail).

I used to help bbq the chicken, now I'm the guy at the door, collecting the money.  Must be they trust me more with the money than the chicken.....

The riders on the Wine Train last night got a nice sunset, but I didn't have my camera out and missed it.  After we ran the locomotive around the train, we passed over the Moose River again, and this time, while it was substantially darker, and the train was in motion, I did get one shot.  It should have been shot with a tripod, but the effect from the train in motion was interesting, too:

.....Our Frankfort line of NS has been very busy these past 6 or so hours.  Very unusual at that time of the evening.  Normal has 2 or 3 trains but seems one after the other clears this evening....I'm wondering if there as been a derailment, something that might have another route clogged that is sending traffic this way......?  Or is it possible the grain shipments are just that heavy right now....

Good Monday morning, everyone.  Hope you all had a very nice weekend.  We're currently at just about 60 degrees this morning, some outlying areas are in the mid 50s; going for a high of 84 today.  Happy Columbus Day!

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are ready to go.

On the breakfast/warmer bar this morning:  turkey bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, hash browns, homemade buttermilk biscuits w/sausage gravy, boiled rice (put some in a bowl, add  some sugar, and milk),toast, bagels and bear claws.  (Can anyone tell that I woke up hungry this morning?)

Wishing you all a very beautiful morning, and have a great day.

......60 degrees here in our mid western part of the world this morning.  Almost clear skies with some high cirus clouds only.  Looks like a bright sunny day for the most part and will be around 80 degrees.

Best wishes to all starting the new week....From the info I'm seeing the Asian and European markets have soared  over night....so must go get MSNBC up and running.  Should mean a much higher opening for the US market.....Could we have hit the bottom.....!

Nice!  A steady rain and about 60.  Good soaking before we go into winter will be nice.

Mutt - got the bowling before but had to leave it on my "other" puter when I left in a hurry.  Glad to have it again.  Still can't break 100!

Quentin - find it ironic that market goes down like a rock and gas prices do too?  Still working on a correlation, but I am almost postive there is one!  Confused [%-)]  Can't take it all at once, maybe?

Need to find an umbrella and go out and wring out the squirrels.

Dale, you must have been reading my mind!  Today is your lucky day.  There is pumpkin pie on the menu today, along with pumpkin cookies.

Today's menu:

1.  Roast, taters, carrots, shellie/green beans, broccoli, cole slaw, homemade biscuits, beef gravy

Today's desserts:

1.  Chocolate cake

2.  Pumpkin cookies (and used a pumpkin cookie cutter)

3.  Pumpkin pie

4.  Yellow cake w/caramel icing

5.  Ice cream

Sun has been out for about a half hour now.  Before that, it was overcast all morning.  Supposed to get to a high of 84 this afternoon.

You all enjoy your meal, and have a good afternoon.

.....Sure Jen, Gas prices should have gone down much more than they have so far....Using round figures 40% drop in crude prices, and gasoline should have followed {according to what they've been telling us now for some time}, which would put us in the general range of $2.50 / gal.  We all know that isn't happening in most places.

Just this morning our prices went from 2.99 here to 2.91.  Down in Indy, roughly 55 miles south....2.69.  Supply and demand...Baloney.

But check out the market.....A good day.....In another 15 min. it will close and looks like over 600 point gain.  {As it appeared a few min. ago}.

Edit:   Closes at 936 points up.....!!!!!!!

Q:  Gas here at $2.67 in two places I saw.

That's less that a gallon of milk.  Can't do without either!

Got my 401K on a 3x5 recipe card.  Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]  Guess they didn't think it was worth putting in on big paper.  When it comes on a rock through the window, will have to seriously think about changing something!

I-80 - we used to be flyover country.  Now we are still flyover and drive really fast past it.

Lots of feathers up and down that highway - from the fastest chicken in Colorado!

Good Tuesday morning, everyone.  Very pleasant temps here this morning; temp is around 66 degrees, w/hardly any breeze blowing.  If any of you watch Good Morning America, you'll see their meterologist, Sam Champion, broadcasting the weather from Louisville, this morning.  Louisville is hosting the National Weather Service Convention this week.  They're right by the Ohio River.

Mudchicken, good to know you all made it home safely, and didn't land in any traps along the way.

Coffee, juices and our other morning beverages are ready.  And on the breakfast/warmer bar this morning:  turkey bacon, bagels, bear claws, sausage, scrambled eggs, biscuits & gravy and tater tots.

Only have two people outside waiting for Tuesday Produce.  I see the sisters  are back this week.   You all have a good morning, and I'll see you all later.

Looks like we've been a tad bit slow this morning, here in the Cafe.  Tuesday Produce went fairly well today.  We only had 66 people.  On the truck today:  potatoes, romaine lettuce, diced green peppers, tomatoes,  mushrooms, packets of butter and maple syrup.

I've got the first round of our Tuesday Mexican Fiesta on the warmer bar.  On today's menu:

1.  Burritos (beef, beef & bean & beef enchilada style)

2.  Tacos (both soft shell and hard shell)

3.  Fajitas

4.  Chimichangas

5.  Shredded lettuce with diced tomatoes

Hope you all have a very pleasant afternoon.  Think I'm going to go take a nap.  For some reason, I'm really sleepy this afternoon.Zzz [zzz] Zzz [zzz]

Been thinking about work lots lately...I'm just glad that I have a job!  Seems some folks in town feel that they have a "right" to have  a $100k salary for doing nothing and are pretty vocal about it.  I can put food on the table and keep the roof over our heads.  It's better than nothing!

Swung past the CN Neenah yard this morning.  All that was moving was two locals: one NB and one SB.  Saw an IC Scale Test Car (IC 100120) which was a first for me.  I haven't seen one in person before.  On the way home I decided to stop by my wife's work and drop off some flowers and candy for her.

Thanks for the burritos CW.  I'll pop back in later!

Special Occasion?  (Rhetorical question).

Reminds me of the old saw - "What makes a woman's mind work?

"Giving her flowers for no apparent reason....."

Evil [}:)]

Paid $3.259 for gas last night - about the lowest in the area from what I've seen.  The way it's been dropping, though, the end is not in sight yet.

I'm even more encouraged by what this might mean for my fuel oil bill this winter.

.....Within the past couple of hours here in Muncie, I noted gasoline @ $2.89.  Glad to see it slowly dropping but they are still way behind what crude has dropped.  Indianapolis is cheaper, yesterday...heard it was in the range of $2.69.

Dan, you're welcome!  Will clean the fridge out after awhile, and then restock it in the morning, while everything's being updated around here.

Other than being two doors up at the Center this morning, haven't been anywhere to check local gas prices here.  And, I don't believe I have heard any local prices quoted on our local news today.  Maybe they did, and I missed it.

And, I've refreshed everything on the warmer bar, for tonight's Mexican Fiesta.

Joe, be sure to get your containers for work tonight.

Everyone enjoy, and have a great evening.

Thanks for the kind words Paul and Larry.  I will (on average about monthly) drop by with at least 1 flower of varying type and some kind of sweet treat.  Sometimes, like today, just because it was Tuesday morning around 11:03 and I love her.  Sometimes (like next week) because it'll be 1 month of wedded bliss.
