....J, check that weather a bit closer....Northern parts of Florida were in the 20's yesterday morning.  We personally, have seen it in the 20's in central Florida about 30 miles north of Orlando.  Eustis, Tavares and even Sanford areas.

For reference in different area elevations:  Ours here in Muncie...937'.

Our home area in Pennsylvania is:  2100'.  So the automobile can get a bit better gas milage making the trip back to Muncie when we do that since we're coming "down hill" for over a 400 mile stretch of over a 1000'.  And yes, it really is noticable.  I can make the trip either way with out stopping for gas, but one can really see it on the gauge, more remains when making the western trek.  Even against the prevailing western wind.  {My trivia for the day}.

And....the sun is out and will be melting snow and ice today...!

Morning Mook. We are around 85' asl. Actual location is exactly 100 miles straight north of Charleston. Yes, it get's cold at times. The night the first POWs were returned from Hanoi, it got down to 0 and in the past, less than 10 in the morning wasn't uncommon. I suspect global warming.....

Grampaw - I didn't realize the carolinas got that cold.  How high up are you?  We are at 1100 and it gets mighty cold - but then that's what the plains are supposed to do - bake and freeze.

Good Tuesday morning, everyone!  Very pleasant this morning, with a temp of 30 degrees outside.  Think I heard that our temp is to go up into the mid to upper 40s today.  That will be nice!!

Coffee, juices, hot chocolate and hot water for tea are ready.  On the warmer bar this morning:  all the regular breakfast items; including Mookie's 'beagles' and Larry's bear claws.

Any requests for lunch today?

The CSX Chicago Line is the old NYC "Water Level Route", in this case along the Mohawk River - nice and flat.  If you want to leave Utica north or south, however, the only way is UP.

Now now, Brian:  no munching on the sweets, until after you eat your supper!!Wink [;)]

I've replenished the soups for tonight, and made more cornbread, and heated up the last of the chili.

Dan, thanks for bringing in the treats!!  That was very nice of you!!

Larry, that was a nice picture from your hotel room.  With my eyes, I had to enlarge the picture in order to see the train!!

If they whistle out there Larry I bet you can hear that for miles & miles.  That "Cold" thread did it's thing on me...I'll take a cup of hot chocolate!

Mook,
My brother-in-law's family in Valley Falls, KS still has 2" of ice on almost everything.  If it wasn't for their generators...they'd be popsicles by now.  And they're supposed to get more snow on top of the ice!

Over the weekend I recorded a wind chill of -10 already.  We have ~ 8"-9" of snow on the ground.  This week will be a 'warm' one for us: two days near 30 degrees!

I brought in some home-made chocolate/mint chocolate/chocolate bars and peanut butter balls for a snack!

CW, you might want to make sure the pot of hot chocolate is full.  After folks check out my "Cold" thread, they'll probably be over to warm up....

It's all of 18 here, and it's noon.  At least the sun is out.

One of the neat parts of staying at the Hotel Utica (where we stay when we work the Polar Express - Sorry, Bergie - hard not to mention the name of the place) is that many of the rooms have a view, if distant, of the CSX Chicago Line (which I may have mentioned before).

Proof:

The buildings along the tracks on the left side of the picture (just follow the line of stacks over that way) are the Susquehanna shops.  Just above them, that white swath is the Mohawk, Adirondack & Northern line to Lyons Falls (originally Utica and Black River, then Rome, Watertown & Ogdensburg, then NYC, etc) over which we run the Polar Express trains.

Sorry for the resolution - all I had with me was my trusty cell phone/camera.  I was staying on the seventh floor.

The picture was taken during a nice, sunny lull in our storm.  False hope.  See the "Cold" thread for what it looked like a couple of hours later....

The soups are just about ready (they're on the stove, in big pots); all I need to do is make the cornbread, and make some hot sandwiches.  Think I'll fix hot roast beef sandwiches, grilled cheese sandwiches, fried bologna sandwiches, and will even fix a few PB&J sandwiches.

Joe, if you've got a balmy 18, our outside temps of 27, 28 must be a real heat wave!!Wink [;)]Laugh [(-D]

Spent a good part of the weekend watching all the people we know east of us.  This winter has been pathetic.  What happened to the 40's and 50's of years past?  And more is coming this next weekend.  Of course, I will share as always.

It is all too much - must hit the hammock for awhile....

Good Monday morning.  Gee, doesn't seem possible that next Monday is Christmas Eve!  My, how time flies!!  Larry, sounds as if you had another interesting week on The Polar Express.  Larry, if you stepped off into a foot of snow, that would have completely covered me!!  Laugh [(-D]

Coffee, hot tea, hot chocolate and fresh juices (oj, oj/tangerine, pineapple) are ready to go this morning.

On the warmer bar:  turkey bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, biscuits & sausage gravy, home fries, bagels, bear claws, blueberry and raisin-spice muffins, and oatmeal and toast.

Will start working on fixing soups (vegetable beef, cream of potato, cream of tomato, and bean & ham ) for today, after a little bit.

Guess that's about it this morning, except for the cold everwhere!  You all take care, and see after awhile.

Where to begin.  Cold and windy all day.  Sun out for a while, but that didn't last.  More snow.  Utica has probably seen around a foot just from this storm.  I stepped off a coach tonight to get the crossing gates at the 'North Pole' and went in to my knees.   Thank goodness for longjohns.  Wind has changed now to westerly, which means - LAKE EFFECT.

I rode the locomotive on the trip back south from the North Pole both times tonight.  We were moving snow most of the time (it was falling that quickly) and the westerly winds were doing a wonderful job of blowing the snow out of the trees - making for zero visibility.  There were times I considered myself lucky if I could see the front handrails....

But we made both runs (plus I got a ride in an ALCO M425 on a trailbreaking mission before the PE trips) and everyone that actually got to the trains (many didn't due to the weather) had a good time.

I got a couple of good pictures, too.  I'll share them later.

Don't worry, Cannonball, we've hardly stepped out of the house today.  Mutt and I did get the recycling out, while Sarah walked the dog  in the back yard.  Otherwise, we've just been taking it easy, reading, watching tv, and on the computer.

Anyone remember me telling you about the accident just up the corner from us last Saturday night?  Well, last night, we had another one, at the south corner from us.  Had one fire apparatus, two ambulances and the police car go south, responding to it, while another apparatus came from the south to the scene.  Hope there's no accidents around here next Saturday night.  I'll be wondering what the heck's going on around here!!

That chili sure smells good and I will attack it shortly.... Officially, we had 1.12 inches of rain last night, bless G-d. Along with that, we had a sharp lightning storm that was quite intense as well as loud. Remember, today is the anniversity of the Battle of the Bulge. Remember their sacrifice in the ice and snow.... Not much on the wireless, so I think I will try to get a short nap in. Stay warm and watch your step.

I've put out on the counter, the Crock Pot with the beef stew in it, and made fresh cornbread.  And the pizzas are on the warmer bar.  Chili is in the fridge, if anyone decides they want a bowl of chili.  Think this is one Sunday afternoon, that's going to be a lazy one for just about everybody (except for Tree, who is very busy with the Polar Express !).

...Good Morning all:  Difficult to determine how much snow we actually did get....and then late last night it put down freezing rain on top of what we had then.  Temps were around 30 then.  Now:  25.

Can't really tell how much snow we received overnight...Dark, windy and blowing it around but it doesn't appear to be snowing real hard now.  Believe the core of it all is way east of us now, but the wrap around is still here and the wind.  If the forecast is still the same, the snow should diminish as the day goes on and the Low system moves farther east.  But we are to have heavy wind gusts today as well, which certainly won't help the conditions of county roads and folk's driveways.  Seems the snow always whips around our home here and swirls it deeper on the 70' drive way and in front of the garage door.

We had an automobile hit a pole {on a near by county road}, last evening and sheared it all the way off and left our area...{Perhaps a mile or so square}, without power.  Repair crew restored our power in 1 hr. and 20 min.  3 cheers for their work...Good job.

Don't think we'll try to get out of the addition to go to Church this morning....Just a little iffy for that.  Believe this is a day to stay in and let the storm work itself out and away.

As long as we have power, we'll be fine....{electric home}.  This has been a serious Winter type blast.

One small bright note:  Noted the sun set 1 min. later last evening starting that process on the way in the season.

Hope everyone {that has this Winter stuff}, can maintain integrity and stay warm at home....
