After hearing from my loving bride yet again about how much train stuff I have sitting in boxes that haven't been opened in years and the status of our bank account, I have set limits on myself.

Since I'm a lone wolf who moves frequently and hand-lay my track, my layout will never be large or complex, even if I had the space. And I prefer to build my locos from kits (as long as I have 1 to run at all times). So I have agreed to a reasonable limit of 5 locos for HO and 3 for HOn3, with another 2 possible for display (my Dad's gifts from his more modern steam collection). When I am at the limit, I must sell one to acquire another one.

I am weeding out my stuff that no longer matches my desires as to era, size, region, and workmanship. What is reasonably nice will go to EBay along with my Dad's collection, the "junk" will be a give-away or packaged with the auction winner's package.

Keeps the peace, and keeps costs and storage reasonable.

yours in peace keeping

I guess my reason for model railroading all these years has been in the wrong direction, what I should have been doing is collecting locomotives, where did I go wrong? I'm sorry folks, what could a person possibly do with the amount of engines some purport to have. This subject comes up 2 or 3 times a year and it boggles my mind (and a few others) that people really do have that many engines (to each his own) Is this normal, do people in other hobbies hoard also? do people have 50 - 75 motorcycles? 200 ferrari's? how about 46 sets of golf clubs or 200 fishing rods, maybe they do. Just mention to someone that you are a model railroader and then tell them you have 25,50 80,125 locomotives and watch the reaction, this is still a great mystery to me, now I will wait for the justification and I'll be no further ahead--easy now --just a comment.

I don't know why we buy so many locos, knowing many will only see limted service.

Its that they are all unique for me. The one thing I won't do is buy two of the same thing in the same scheme

I only have about 6 with DCC installed and can really be run on the layout. If I add up all the locos that I have, it is still only 11.

Ray Seneca Lake, Ontario, and Western R.R. (S.L.O.&W.) in HO

We'll get there sooner or later!

I'll just say 75! A cross between current and historic locomotives, including some steamers and E/F units. I haven't the time to list them all [:D].

I've seen on TV where a guy "hoards" license plates. Has thousands of em'! And they don't even do anything! Why? Who knows?

There was also a story a while back where a car wash was thinking someone was ripping them off. All kinds of coins missing from the change machine. Turns out a bird had quite an affection for nice shiny quarters and had found a way to get up into the change machine! A further investigation found lots of quarters on a rooftop nearby! Why? Who knows?

As for me... I like shiny, new locomotives, so I collect them. Why? Who knows? [:)]

Well mostly they sit in display cases or boxes in storage. Actually though, someone declares a theme night at an operating session and there is no problem showing up with a 100% proper train. Someone wants a model re-creation of the photo on page 110 of "Santa Fe's Early Diesel Daze" - no problem. Museum asks for a model display of the history of Alco Locomotives, or the paint schemes of the GN or even all the BN predecessor lines - no problem. People interested in the hobby want to know how a Bachmann compares to an Atlas to an Athearn. Just let them run (or even take home) the ones they are interested in and see for themselves. ETC.

Yes, I used to have 6 Mustang convertibles. I think every one has heard of the storage units and separate warehouses for 50K+ volume book collections. I just inherited my mother's Barbie Doll collection to sell - truck loads. Don't even ask how many HO Thunderjet 500 slot cars, "My Little Ponys", McDonald happy meal toys, salt & pepper shakers... some people have...

There is no justification. If I could figure out why, then maybe invent a cure, and not only spend less on trains but make money selling the cure.

I have 54 so far, with two more on order and a few on my "want list" that I carry with me to train shows, etc. in case I see them at a good price. I'm sure there will be more as the manufacturers introduce new models and/or new paint schemes.

No, I can't possibly run them all at the same time on my smallish 11x14 layout, but it lets me change the era, locale, and even the emphasis (way freights vs. intermodal hotshots, for example). I'm working now to get some display cases up on the wall for the locos not on the layout.
