How many locomotives do you own?

The GM&D roundhouse has 11 operational and 2 basket case projects (all steam and mostly camelback), plus 2 legacy locos from my childhood (1 diesel and 1 gas mechanical.

I'm almost at the point where I can reliably pass up a bargain basement , needs-a-good-home, swap-meet special.

Why did you ask this question? I've counted mine and I can't believe that I have this many! I don't even have a pike!!! I've been collecting engines since the 70's. Here's the break down:

No, I can't possibly run them all at the same time on my smallish 11x14 layout, but it lets me change the era, locale, and even the emphasis (way freights vs. intermodal hotshots, for example). I'm working now to get some display cases up on the wall for the locos not on the layout.

Well mostly they sit in display cases or boxes in storage. Actually though, someone declares a theme night at an operating session and there is no problem showing up with a 100% proper train. Yes, I used to have 6 Mustang convertibles. I think every one has heard of the storage units and separate warehouses for 50K+ volume book collections. I just inherited my mother's Barbie Doll collection to sell - truck loads. Don't even ask how many HO Thunderjet 500 slot cars, "My Little Ponys", McDonald happy meal toys, salt & pepper shakers... some people have...

There was also a story a while back where a car wash was thinking someone was ripping them off. All kinds of coins missing from the change machine. Turns out a bird had quite an affection for nice shiny quarters and had found a way to get up into the change machine! A further investigation found lots of quarters on a rooftop nearby! Why? Who knows?

As for me... I like shiny, new locomotives, so I collect them. Why? Who knows? [:)]
