Evenin' Folks!

Been a drizzly but fairly pleasent day here in the Finger Lakes.  I have been getting some stuff done that needed to get done before I take off for the NER Convention in NJ on Thursday.

NWP SWP
I would never say that to someone.

My comment on that...

My advise would be:

and regular coffee all around!

Evenin all. It was a pleasant sunny day today with a gentle breeze off the Pacific. I think I could smell Hawaii, that suite fruit smell that only the tropics can give. Or it may have been the neighbours rotting apples on the ground.Laugh

Peeled off 800 calories today on the bike so I think I will top up with a Rum and Coke tonight and maybe some popcorn.

Hockey season is a couple of weeks away, that will be better than watching the trash I seem to find on the tube these days.

I am really itching to get back to the rink with the kids, but a whole new group has moved in to take over as our kids leave. It is only fair that the new parents get to coach and be involved with their own kids as it is those memories that will be some of the best. I may go and loiter the odd Saturday.

I wrote a lot last year about how my routine was changed in a big way on Sept 11, 2001. Exhaustion and heartbreak commanded the day. Let's hope pragmatism will guide the planet as we go forward.

Wife is at a Grad meeting tonight at my daughters' school, it will be another one off to University next year. I hope that lets us get back to discovering some exciting places around the world. My wife and I had booked a diving trip to the Soloman Islands twenty years ago to dive the WW II wrecks there and Truk Lagoon.

https://www.google.ca/search?q=truk+Lagoon&safe=off&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiY5KPasrTdAhWLhFQKHQCUD5cQ_AUICygC&biw=1096&bih=516

The wife got pregnant and that put an end to that trip. Neither one of us is able to dive anymore due to old age and health reasons. However, a shallow dive on the Barrier Reef may be okay. Went on a 50ft sailboat through the Whitsunday Islands in Australia 30 years ago, I would love to do another couple of weeks of that.

I would like to go to Tinian atoll, Saipan and Guam. The South Pacific is my favourite place to explore.

Lots to see not much time left.

I knew four guys that were in the South Pacific in WWII. Three were British Comando's and one was a coast watcher. They all had incredible stories to tell. My best friends Grandpa was one of them and he was in a really nice old folks home up the Coast. We would go visit him often when we would go up there fishing. This song sums up the visits.

Time for the Idiot box.Laugh

All the best to all.

I used to park at the Amtrak station at the local airport, because the shuttle to or from satellite parking was somethimes full and wouldn't stop.

After 9-11 a we noticed a car parked full of 9-11 dust and dirt.  It looked like no other kind of dirt, winter grime, road dust or anything else.  Everytime we parked there, for maybe 3 years, that car was in the same spot.  I called the state police sometime along that period, figuring it was either stolen or a rental car that was dumped or maybe somehow related to other terrorists.  It was there for another year, before it was taken away.

I always wondered about the story behind that car.

I've heard other stories from people who were close enough to see the people jumping.  I wish I hadn't.

Evening folks,

Brought my heavy flat to the club, I need a pair of boxes to run on each end of it. I'm going to paint them NWP SWP colors and maybe add some "billboards" to the sides.

Thank you for the doughnuts, but I don't need the coffee. (I am not a coffee fan and besides which, it would probably put me to sleep.)

Hobby Front: Got the yard roads glued down, got a flat car repaired (brakewheel and coupler cover reattached), finished off the trackwork for the carshop (trimmed some rail to fix some spots that were long on one side and that needed to be evened out on the other in order to put another road to reach the main team track structure), worked on some loads for the coal cars and also got some stepping stones painted with the base coat. (I don't remember why I ended up getting those stones but I have idea where I will use them.)

Now for the oopses: I discovered that the flat has the wrong wheelsets. It has chilled back which are wrong for my era. Given that car is one of three of that kind purchased at a swap meet two years ago, I suspect the other two havve the same problem. Something else I need to fix.

I also went and did the buy another piece of rolling stock. Bought an Athearn BB GP9, although I am told it is closer to a GP7. I will end up converting it into a non-DB unit with roof air tanks for a fourth passenger engine, similar to a prototype from the NP.

That leaves only two more pieces of rolling stock on the want list: an Athearn observation car for the passenger fleet and an Exactrail hopper car. (I asked Mom for part of the funds for the hopper car for my birthday. She has said that idea is acceptable.)

Mornin' Folks

Wonder where Track Fiddler has been? He was having house guests for the weekend. Maybe they locked him in the basement — with his trains, I hope.

I gave the layout about a five-hour workout last night, just to "clear the cobwebs" as it were. Lots of fun, a few minor glitches, but still a good time.

This is The Alouette, near Plymouth, New Hampshire, stranded in the March, 1936 flood. Fourteen days of rain and melting snow and ice wrecked havoc in New England.

Beach Bill here-  haven't been to the diner for some time but was a regular there for a while.    We evacuated North Myrtle Beach yesterday (Tuesday) and are safe at my sister's apartment in Asheville, NC.  Forecast does not look good for the Winneshiek & Western RR.

When I moved to the beach I recognized the possibility of a serious hurricane and I did the difficult decision-making early.   I established one good-sized evacuation box, and put the boxes of locomotives and such in there that I would most want to save.  Several cabooses with interiors and passenger cars with interiors completed are also in that box.  My wife and I each drive a Prius, so there is not much room.   I also allowed one "copy paper box" of RR books.   With over 500 RR books in the library, deciding on the last ones to fit in that box is difficult.   Despite the hours involved, the structures are still on the layout.

Very little to do now but wait.  I had the house built with sloping roof and no gables for the wind to get under and I believe that it is okay for a Cat 2...   There is a risk of flooding from rain.   If anyone wants to pause a moment and send good thoughts for the Winneshiek & Western to run again without damage, that would be appreciated.

I got a haircut.  Big deal?  Well, it's the first haircut in 40 years that was not done at my barbershop in Concord, MA.  I've relocated to Virginia, so Concord is a bit far to go now.

Good afternoon

Beach Bill ... good to see you here again.  Glad you and your wife evacuated to a safe place .  That was wise. Of course human life matters more than possessions.

Mr. B.  .. 40 years with the same barber shop is remarkable . I bet the new place did well however.

Ed .. The train stranded in the flood is interesting .  I recall when CB&Q rescued diesel trains with steam locomotives from flooded tracks.

Evening diners,

I'm thinking about building a diorama or at least the structures for it, maybe some locomotives.

I'm thinking about doing a SD40T switcher with a cut down long hood about the height of a SW1500 or MP15, no short hood, and the spartan cab. I still have to work on the F45 spartan cab to get it just right and the P42cbu though so I might wait a while.

This is what it'd look like.

With an engine still of course.

Also I'm trying to figure out my set list for when I play the Zachary Fall Art crawl. I'm pretty set on She's Got a Way (Joel), If you could read my mind (Lightfoot), and You may be right (Joel)

I'm thinking about doing an interlude of the chorus from Love Story in She's got a way.

It'd go like this.

She's got a way about her
I don't know what it is
But I know that I can't live without her
She's got a way of pleasin'
I don't know what it is
But there doesn't have to be a reason
Anyway
She's got a smile that heals me
I don't know why it is
But I have to laugh when she reveals me
She's got a way of talkin'
I don't know what it is
But it lifts me up when we are walkin'
Anywhere
She comes to me when I'm feelin' down
Inspires me without a sound
She touches me and I get turned around
(Now transition)
She fills my heart with very special things
With angels' songs, with wild imaginings
She fills my soul with so much love
That anywhere I go I'm never lonely
With her around, who could be lonely
I reach for her hand, it's always there (trailing off)
(Back to she's got a way)

She's got a way of showin', mmm, hmmm (humming)
How I make her feel
And I find the strength to keep on goin'
She's got a light around her
And anywhere she goes
A million dreams of love surround her
Everywhere
She comes to me when I'm feelin' down
Inspires me without a sound
She touches me and I get turned around, oh whoa ohhh whoa ohh, oh oh. (Big flourish here)

She's got a smile that heals me
I don't know why it is
But I have to laugh when she reveals me
She's got a way about her
I don't know what it is
But I know that I can't live without her
Anyway, hey (kinda slide the Anyway into hey.)

Flo, Give the gang a Beer, Gary what ever he wants. Yes a T-Bone Steak Dinner is fine with me Flo.

Gary Thank You for reading my post about the Wife surgey! We where up at 4:00 AM and at the hospital at 6:00 AM. Surgery took around 1 hour and 15 minutes so it went well. She seemed in good sprits when I left at 7:00 PM. Well she is all so on some drugs so that helped.

Thursday will be the real test, the block that they have her will be worn off by then and they are going to make her walk.

Well I am running out of steam, so later.

Well I need a stiff drink, I'll take an Arnold Palmer, spike it with ginger ale and give me a root beer chaser.

Just found out my friend Sarah got asked out on a date by a guy at college, I'm not bothered by it in as much that I'm annoyed she didn't just tell me that she didn't want to go out with me when I asked her.

Oh well, there's plenty of other girls out there.

Flo ... I’ll have a vanilla malted milk shake please.

Ken .. Thanks for offering a T bone .  You are off the hook because I’m having expensive dental problems currently . I have trouble chewing now. .... I’m pleased to hear your wife’s surgery went well .  It is good of you to take care of her .  She will need you as she heels.

NWP SWP .. if you don’t mind a suggestion, I think you should continue making the KCS coal cars You did well on the first one. ... Also, don’t worry about women. Instead, just continue improving yourself .  Consider taking college classes yourself . You will do very well. My 2 cents.

T F ... good to see you

Happy Model Railroading, everybody.

I'm going to college next fall, I'm a year early so I took a year off.

I'm going to invite my Sunday school class to the Fall art crawl to hear me sing, hopefully some of the girls in the class will come listen, I'll instantly become "Mr. Cool" or the "sensitive music guy" either one works.

And anyway it's her loss, and I actually feel happy for her, the guy actually is about as much of a geek as she is with the superheroes and star wars and doctor who, sci-fi stuff, so they kinda are birds of a feather.

And I just posted a picture of the sheet music for Honesty on my instagram, I did the same with She's got a way, if you could read my mind, and you may be right, so it's not obvious, but I said in the caption I'm thinking about doing it for fall art crawl, which I am, and there's the Burn Factor, so yeah I feel better.

Also just to point out I don't even know If she said yes, her post didn't even imply it so she could've turned the poor chap down like she did me, I reached the reasonable conclusion she did say yes.

I hope your home survives Bill! That's not something that I ever want to face. I'm not religious but I will cross my fingers for you.

We are blessed to live in southern Ontario. The last hurricane was in 1954 (Hazel) and it did an incredible amount of damage. A lot of lessons were learned the hard way, like don't build on flood plains.

There are some amusing stories (at least in hindsight) that came from the storm. One occurred right here in Bradford. The Holland Marsh flooded and one family's two storey house started to float. The family was still inside it! As it floated across the marsh the family had to keep moving from one side to the other to keep it from falling over. I'm not sure if the house survived or not but the family did.

There were less amusing events of course. As the water surged down the Don River through Toronto the washed out trees and debris built up against the low concrete bridges that spanned the river. The first bridge burst releasing a huge amount of dammed up water. That surge hit several more bridges downstream and each one let go in the same manner. IIRC there were 800 houses washed away that had been built on the flood plains.

Good luck,

Dave

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

Morning diners,

I feel better this morning, I'm still a little bothered by it, just how she didn't have the decency to say "I don't like you" she kinda led me on, honesty is always the best policy.

Well we can still be friends, I guess.

Moving on to better subjects.

Yeah I thought about doing some more KCS coal gons too.

NWP SWP,

I doubt it was about you, but more of a "bird in the hand" situation. She's at college, you're not. It probably doesn't mean anything to her. A lot of people see college as a time to date around, get a feel for what kind of person you are and what kind of person you want to be with. The same thing will happen to you when you go to college, and you'll be on more of an equal footing. For now, keep working hard and saving up money for college! Dating is expensive, almost as expensive as college textbooks. Smile

There's a bakery between here and home that makes the best hearth-baked bread. Sometimes I get a craving to hack off a slab about an inch thick, toast it just enough to warm it up for the butter, and go to town on it. Mmm. (It's great with cheese, too; makes me feel like a medieval French peasant farmer.) I guess I'm going to have to make a stop on the way home. Anyone else want a slice? Dig in. The crusty end is mine; that's the best part.

I'm over it now so I'm better.

Mowed most of the grass, it was very therapeutic.Laugh

Moving on now, I'm going to do some more KCS gons to go one my coal mine switching layout, along with the tipple, and a pair of MP40SDs.

Good afternoon all.

Flo - A RBF please. Thanks.

Ken - Glad that wife's surgery went well. Hopefully a quick and easy recovery comes next.

Steven NWP - I haven't said it yet, so nice job on the flat car.

Ulrich - Very nice vid of your layout.

SteveO - Thanks for the fresh baked bread!

Beach Bill - Hope that the home and layout are ok. Glad you are safe.

W*^k - Ken could relate, as I thought I was working with Jerry the past couple of days! They messed up, not just one, or two, but FIVE, YES FIVE!!! Deliveries this week! And the kicker? I was the one "assigned" to correct them! (Also, I was the one blamed for it, but that got shot down by me when I found the "lost" paperwork, sitting on the owners desk!) I'm beginning to think the commission that I am making here is simply not worth the hassle, especially if this is going to be a regular occurrence....

Weather - Getting a little humid again... Not to my liking...

Hope all are well, and all enjoy the day!

Stephen if you are a freshman in college, which sounds better?  I date a sophomore or I date a guy that is still in high school back home?

Actually when they get older, they have really viscious ways of telling you to go away.  Dating someone else is the gentle way.

Beach Bill I almost went to Myrtle Beach this week.  My parents took me there in 1957 and 58.  On the news, it looks nothing like I remember.  I saw my first Holiday Inn, with a really cool (for a 6 year old) neon sign that was sort of like the NBC peacock, only it was straight lines instead of tail feathers.  Our motel had the first palm trees I ever saw and an island separating the deep and shallow end.

Loved the race track, really old jallopies.  We ate at a night club.  I think it must have been a dry county back then and a temporary membership was the only way my father could get his VO Manhatten.  I had roast beef and strawberry short cake.  My culinary choices were extremely limited back then.  I fell asleep with my nose in the strawberry shortcake one night.
