Afternoon folks!
Went from way too hot last week to a bit too chilly for the start of this one. got up this morning and switched from Air Conditioning to Heat for my kitties.... (Well I didn't mind getting the temp up above 65F myself.) It was 48°F outside when I got up this morning. All the way up to 58°F at the moment. Fall has fell upon us!
BigDaddyNo clock in the Shorpy bar but a lot of cigarrette butts on the floor
You didn't scroll the photo all the way over to the Right did you. Yep, there is a clock in the photo. MLC , I thought it was 4:00 on the nose. I didn't find the card though.
Put on one of my almost new suits for church this morning (one that I bought last February) and found it is way too large for me already! Now if it was the other way around I would have been ticked off, but this way I could do some bragging. The suit fit me perfectly back 30 lbs ago but now the pants fall down unless I use the suspenders with it. The coat I can pull out about 6 inches from my stomack. I will be taking a trip to the place I bought it in hopes they can refit it for me as that is the suit I want to wear to my 50th reunion at Eastman School of Music a month from now. If they can take the pants and coat in to look decent I will then take over the 3 piece one that was tailor made for me..... It does remind just how much different I look now than I did just 6 months ago......
Oh, and for those with Lady problems in your life, both young and old, this is for you:

Afternoon Diners
Flo, drinks are on me.
Day off have a pile of tree leavens that are tall than my Towncar and just as long I will add. Took me around 2 hours using my chain saw and saws all. Had a small lunch on the front pourch (think it was the first time I ever ate out there in 25 years) and started to clean the gutters.
Woman I was up on the ladder cleaning out the front gutters. Wife comes out with the phone glued to her ear. She says "Sparkie need to go out right now he bugging like he needs to pee !" I look at her like shes nuts and say "But Sue I am cleaning the gutters, call your friend back when he is done!" She said "No, I want to finshes my conversion!".
So I got down off the ladder, took Sparkie The Rocket Dog out and said screw it and came in to drink Guess my wife does not know how to do Redial!

If everything seems under control, you're not going fast enough!
So how about this?
It's a Walthers heavy depressed flat kit, custom painted (rattle cans), some brass and copper pipe fittings covered with a tarp (see my thread "How to make HO scale tarps, tie downs, and blocking?" To see how I did it) and thread tie downs.
I'm going to "decal" it tomorrow, Tuesday at the latest.
What do you guys think?
Happy times!

Hi Ulrich:
Great video, although I think that all the engineers like to crack the throttle wide open!!
Hope all is well!
Dave
I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
I had a bit of a setback on Sunday night. I was in the garage gathering up some tools and supplies to help with the decorating of my son's wedding venue (wedding is next Saturday). I was walking on a flat concrete surface when my left ankle went 'Pop' and things stated to hurt. Then my ankle started to bleed! I hadn't hit anything or twisted anything. I was just walking normally.
Dianne took me to the hospital to see what had happened. I had broken my left Achillies tendon in 2003 and I was concerned that it had happened again. However, unlike the 2003 incident where the tendon was clearly broken and there was a huge hollow depression in the back of my ankle, this time the tendon seemed to be still in place and solid. The ER doctor concluded that what had broken was some scar tissue that had adhered a vein to the scar tissue that resulted from the 2003 operation. The bleeding stopped on its' own and actually there wasn't much blood, but there is obviously a lot of blood sitting under the skin.
The smart thing to do would be to lie down for a few days, but that is going to be difficult:
- my son is getting married next Saturday. There is a ton of stuff that I have to do
- I have a painter and trim installers coming first thing Monday morning
- I also have a technician coming on Monday morning to sort out our messed up security system.
- I have a nurse coming on Wednesday evening to do some tests for a new life insurance policy (I wonder where my blood pressure will be?!?)
- I have a Layout Committee meeting in Barrie on Monday night.
- I have a Club meeting on Tuesday night.
- Somewhere in there I have to pick up a part for our hot tub
- And, I have to get to a Trophy engraving shop to get a plaque made for the Golden Spike ceremony on Sept. 18th!
Ya, right! I'm going to be able to stay off my ankle for how long???
I guess that's what pain killers are for!
Cheers everybody!! Pardon my whining!
Tinplate ToddlerDave, someone is telling you to go at a slower pace! Get well soon!
Believe me Ulrich, I can't go much slower than I am, at least when it comes to walking. As for all the other stuff, I have chosen to do what I can for my family and for the club, so "damn the torpedos, full speed ahead!".
Cheers!!
Tinplate ToddlerHappy times!
I'm glad for you, Ulrich
I very much enjoyed the video. Nice camera work, steady and smooth.
I wish you a speedy recovery, Dave. I know how those obligations and your desire to be helpful can add up. As the Tin Man says, go easy. You won't be very helpful if you're the one laid up and others have to tend to you.
Happy Monday, everyone!

A quick and dirty video of "Trainspotting in Talheim" to start the new week!
Ulrich, I thought you might get a laugh out of this.
This morning I was in a hurry as I had to get my Wife to the hospital for some tests and I was looking through the forum posts very quickly, then I came to yours and as I skimmed past it, I thought it said "Transporting the Taliban".
I had to quickly go back and read it again because I couldn't imagine what you had eaten with your fruit loops today.
Love your layout and that's a great job on the background..
Dave, at your age you should be well skilled at delegating and I suggest you do that and take some rest before the wedding.
Steven, That is a pretty fine looking kitbash for your first one. I always love seeing what others and myself can come up with for using things we have around into another context to serve another purpose.. Thats part of the fun.

How's this look guys?
Good afternoon from the land where Predators hang out.
The kid worked on the movie "The Predator" for a whole bunch of days back in the Spring of 2017. The movie finally comes out this week. He worked long days on that one including a few nineteen hour days. Usually 1500hrs to 1000hrs. Lots of night shooting where he was running through car crashes with exploding cars and houses all around him. I'll wait for the report to see how much he actually shows up in the movie before I decide whether to go see it or not. I may just wait for NetFlicks.

I see we have a very talented young Steven displaying his handy work. Looks great, the only suggestion I have is to tighten up the ropes holding the load down. Other than that "I think you've got it!"
I spent a good part of the day sorting through all my R/C stuff that didn't get damaged in the flood. I have a lot of balsa and hardwood from my days of building planes. Hardware galore that will come in handy on the layout.
This is kind of what the corner of our garage looks like except with four times as many sticks. There are sticks so small out there I can't imagine my kid ever using them. A purge is coming.
Well, the dinner bell ringeth.
All the best to all.

Evening all!
Car Front: Mom's new vehicle was delivered on Sunday. She likes the vehicle very much.
Hobby Front: Got a few more things done on the new layout. The yard road has been cut for both sections of door. (The road for the corner section is still slightly up in the air.) I will get them glued down either later tonight or tomorrow afternoon. I finally got the first batch of the custom tan ground foam all chopped down in the coffee grinder. (That batch almost completely fills a gallon plastic pitcher. The other batch completely fills a plastic shoebox.) I also made a small quantity of a different green for the lake area. (I decided that the original green was too uniform for my liking.) The passenger yard track has also been secured down. I have also decided to make both halves of the station platform the same length. That amounts to one more platform on the left hand side. (I needed more benches anyway.)
If I can convince Mom, maybe I can get the lake section ready to move into town on Sunday. (Maybe even I can get moved.)
Evening folks!
I redid and tightened the tie downs on the car, they're better but not perfect.
The cars reporting marks/car number is "NPSP #12801"
12801 is actually my birthday, 1-28-01, I couldn't think of another number and I figured it'd be a good conversation piece.
Changed the O2 sensor on my truck! Guess what the sensor was, A: Original Ford Equipment right down to having the blue oval stamped on it, B: non OEM but still old as all get out, or C: almost new?
The answer is A, it's ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT!!!!
One thing to say about Ford antiseize compound, it WORKS, the old sensor came out extremely easily!
I disconnected the battery for a while to refresh the computer.
I've got three songs I'm going to be doing for the Fall Art Crawl in Zachary, I'm doing "She's got a way" "If you could read my mind" and "You may be right" I'm going to invite my Sunday school class to come listen so I better do well!
It's not for another month yet so I have time to practice.
Eveing Diners
Flo, get the gang and I a and Ulrich, Rick and Steven what they like.
Ulrich I must say that backdrop really changed your layout! Looks much bigger and I as well enjoyed the Video!
Steven Other than the slack ropes the car looks good!
Last Day at the job well for now! Just a refresh, Sue is having her right knee replaced this Wednesday. So today is my last day of work for 3 to 6 weeks depending on her. Good news I have had the company holding back my commission and spiff money so I should have around 7 weeks of paychecks coming!
Down Side, I am not sure I will be going back? Nancy is driving me nuts and getting me all PO'ed! She had me so bad today just over the phone I took everything I owned home with me! Use to be a simple job, now a royal pain in the caboose with Nancy and Jerry the working by them selfs!
Just about done Ken posting again.
Let us pause for just a moment out of our day today to commemorate Patriots Day and remember the events of September 11, 2001.
Thank You,
As President George W. Bush said, "We will not waver; we will not tire; we will not falter, and we will not fail. Peace and Freedom will prevail."
Our 9/11/2001 memories include some train travel to return home from being stranded in Halifax, NS. We traveled via American Airlines from Nashville on 9/9/2001. We spent 9/11 watching the horrors on TV in our hotel room. About 50 trans-Atlantic flights were diverted to Halifax, and the airport became a big parking lot of airliners full of stranded passengers.
I recall the Canadians being very gracious hosts to thousands of stranded people, and I will always praise Canadians for that. We needed to find a way home. Renting a car one-way was going to cost us about $3000, and we decided not to do that. We considered joining up with some people who were going to charter a bus to Chicago. I checked train schedules and fares and decided to wait until space was available on Via Rail.
We departed Halifax on Via's Ocean a few days later. We arrived in Montreal about 20 hours later on a train with about 20 Budd passenger cars. Next, we road a Via train to Toronto where we stayed in a hotel for two nights. We road Amtrak's International to Flint, MI. There was a long delay at the border. All passengers were required to get off the train in Sarnia to ride a bus to Port Huron to get back on the train. The busses were delayed with a long line of traffic passing through Customs and Immigration. We departed Port Huron several hours late. In Flint, we rented a car to drive one way to Nashville. We drove our car home from there.
Below is a photo I took from the Budd dome observation car. We met the eastbound Ocean while still in Nova Scotia.

EVERYWHERE LOST; WE HUSTLE OUR CABOOSE FOR YOU
Afternoon diners,
Today at work I had a "here's your sign" moment, I was about to start a pressure washer to clean under the roof in front of the Hotel, a guest walks by and says "you gonna do some pressure washing?" No I was gonna clean my teeth with it! OF COURSE I'M GOING TO PRESSURE WASH! Here's your sign.
September 11, 2001, will always stick in my mind. My paternal grandfather's funeral was scheduled for that morning. At the time, I was living and working in North Dakota. I was working an overnight job at the bus depot. After I got off work, I jumped on a Greyhound bus to head home for that funeral. I found out about those events just after the bus departed Glendive. The driver announced that as the result of those events, we were the only mass transit running in the country. It was even talked about at the reception after the service.
Next up is Hurricane Florence. I'm in inland Virginia now, so no real worries, but seeing the sun again would be nice.
On the other hand, it's been five days since we last saw 90 degrees, so that's a plus. I can go for a walk again.
It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.
My dear Steven,
NWP SWPNo I was gonna clean my teeth with it! OF COURSE I'M GOING TO PRESSURE WASH! Here's your sign.
Sometimes people innocently say things because they may be timid, or just want to be nice and start a conversation with an innocuous opening line.
I have had some very intellegent people say to me "Nice day, isn't it?" and never did I assume they were being stupid for stating the obvious.
Rather than being negative and insulting why not try be kind and understanding by realizing that maybe this person is only trying to be friendly and they make these simple statements to "break the ice".
Perhaps your future girl friend may try to approach you with the classic — "Do you come here often?" kind of question. Will your reply be "Duh, here's your sign" or will it be something like "No I don't but if I see friendly people like you, I will."
Here's YOUR sign. Not everyone who makes innocuous statements is a person of lower intelligence.
Isn't there enough negativity in the world without these so called "comedians" stirring up enmity? It really is a form of bullying.
OK, I'll get down now.
Ed, I'm not a fool, I would never say that to someone, I was just telling you guys because I thought it was kinda funny, my mistake.
Flo, the gang and I will have a please and give Ulrich, Rick and Steven what they like.
Last day of freedom for a while. Wife goes under the knife Wednesday to have her knee replaced. Some would be helpful! For me and her! I hope she does not think I will be her man serevent because I will not. OK, when she first get home, I will help her a lot. But I will make her get up to do things for her self so she will get stronger. I will be a task master when it come to doing her Physical Thererapy! It took me about 3 months to get my full use back to my hand after surgery. I know this will take way longer but she has to push her self.
Steven I am with you on it being funny! Back when I ran a Auto Body shop one Saturday after hours I was wet sanding and buffing a car we had done to get caught up. It was hot so I had the garage door open to let some air in. Two woman walked in and one asked "Do you work here?" I said "No, I felt like buffing a car so I broke in!" I did help them, but really?
Have to be up at 4:30 AM to take Sue to the Hospital so later.
