Jeff .... Any more clues about he F7B? ....  Is the dynamic brake fan same size as cooling fans over engine? Can you tell how the shell was supposed to be mounted on the frame without the slots where Athearn has them?

Looking inside the shell I found a faint line going up each side and across the top. There's an even fainter one (darn near invisible) at the other end. They're about one inch from the ends of the shell. I had to sharpen this one with photo editing so it would show up good.

I'm thinking this has to be a HI-F dummy shell. I've gotten a couple of Athearn HI-F F7 dummy frames in junk lots hat I picked up for parts and I know for a fact that one of the, an F7 frame, had two walls or whatever on it that would support the shell. Right now the shell I have is being supported by the coupler pads on the chassis it's on. So it looks to be an odds-on bet that this is an Athearn HI-F dummy shell. I've worked on a few of the HI-F F7 power unit shells and they had the tab slots on the sides. The old HI-F F7A power unit shell will snap right onto today's Athearn F7 chassis with only minor modification to the pilot.

Afternoon folks!

Chloe just a refill of lemonade for me at the moment.

Paul, good luck with the eye surgery.  Hope all goes well!

Rob, how sad to lose Bucky that way!  He was in the prime of his life...  If I had ever gotten a farm (thought about buying a small one several times) I would have loved to have a pair of Minis to pull a cart in local parades and maybe the county fair.  Wonderful animals!

Currently 64°F outside.  Crisp fall like weather for today.  Air conditioner is resting today!  We are getting a mixture of clouds and sun, but all told a nice day.

I have just about finished the cleaning of the bathroom (only have to do the sink), and have started the kitchen floor.  have an allergist appointment in a hour and a half.  i'll see how much i can get done before I leave for it.

Later!

I thought that was celebasy not stability.

Monks do not take vows of Celibacy or Poverty. Those vows were unknown in the church during the time of Benedict. But of course, they are included and implied in the name "monk". In any event the vow of obedience covers it.

The vows I took were: Obedience, Stability, and Conversion to a Monastic way of life.

Poverty and Celibacy are spelled out in the regulations of the congregation and the customary of our Abbey.

Afternoon folks!

Taking a bit of a break...  Got the kitchen done and the floor in the bathroom mopped...  Still have to do the sink in there and vacuum the living room.  Then I will almost ready to have people over tomorrow.

csxns
that is going to be a lot of doe spent

In other words you will be paying "Deerly"? Whistling

Sun has been peaking through quite a bit this afternoon.  I just got home from running a couple errands after seeing the allergist.  I made the mistake of mentioning that I haven't been able to sleep on my back in the last 40 years and that I have trouble breathing at night during pollen seasons....  I am now scheduled to have a sleep study done.  She says it most likely will be just a test kit I take home and use for a night.  She also said there are many option other than a CPAP machine these days.  I told her I have no intentions of shaving off the beard!  That is scheduled for late this month.

OK, back to w*rk!

Jeremy, I'm sorta ready. I want my dolphins to get pretty far this year, Tannehill's got this. I'm also ecstatic for the NHL to start back up so the Sharks can get in the stanley. I also want to see if Batman's canucks will lose to my sharks again.  Smile, Wink & Grin

Got in another Varney F3 today. The Burlington is well represented. This one has it's original drive and it still works!

Two motors it has to pull good and is the motors like the Mantua ones, the club I go to sometimes, they have some in the displace case but never seen under the hood but the wheels and coupler shank they are the same, they get stuff like that from people giving their old trains away, some at the club don't even know what they have some they have thrown away. now it's time for bed so good nite too all.

It's one motor. The motor drives the rear truck which in turn turns a drive shaft that drives the front truck. Power pickup is what was common then. Front truck picks up from one rail, rear truck from the other rail. The motor is a Pittman DC-71. It looks very similar to what I've seen in some Mantua steamers I've worked on. In fact I had a Hobbytown GP7  that had a Pittman type of motor. I also saw one like it in a Penn Line F7 so it was fairly common.

Jeffrey, to help in your identification, here's one that I know is an old Athearn B unit:

It has a metal frame and metal truck sides, and also metal wheels.  I've added Kadees, wire grabs, plastic glazing in the portholes, and a road number, and then I gave it a coat of satin clear-coat.

The frame inside is just like an A-unit, and even has a tapered nose.  In the center of the car, the middle of those 3 slots is the one that fits over the tab in the frame to hold the shell in place.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

Mister B: That's the first HI-F B unit I've seen with a metal frame. The couple I've had were plastic frames with plastic trucks and wheels and didn't have the locking tabs on the sides of them. Instead they had two vertical walls that fit inside the shell. The shell I have is very similar to yours except it doesn't have the slots for the tabs. Other than that it's virtually identical.

Got some grocery shopping done today. Received a Varney Burlington F3A in the mail. It has it's original drive. It runs but not very fast. The motor is a bit stiff. It'll work better later when I can get some CRC 2-26 into it. It's an old Pittman DC-71 open frame motor so that won't be a problem. The drive system is intact and all eight wheels pull. If I can't save the motor I can always swap out the chassis with one from an Athearn F7 or one the Athearn clones. Also got a seven piece Dremel drill bit set. Now I just need the chuck. I can use the chuck I have but getting bits in and out of it can be rough as the chucks teeth tend to jam. When that happens I have to remove the chuck, pound it on the table top several times the shove a screwdriver into the back of it and force the bit out.

Well that's all for today. See y'all tomorrow.

Good Morning Gang.

Janie, just coffee in my BLS mug, please. BLS, that is Bern Loetschberg Simplon Railway, my favorite Swiss line.

Campaigning will slow down a little for the next days. There is only one big rally coming up in Hannover, our state capital, on Saturday. From Sunday until Tuesday, I will be able to enjoy a few days off, right in time to get some rest before the campaign will reach its peak. Wednesday next week will see a speech in Cuxhaven, followed by a speech in Rotenburg on Thursday, Wolfsburg on Friday, Soltau on Saturday, Braunschweig on Sunday and Berlin on Monday. On Sept. 17th I will have time for taking a deep breath, before hitting the road for the final 4 days of the campaign.

Official polls are slowly starting to rise, but still are below the threshold of 5% necessary to enter the Bundestag. The "inofficial", Internet-based polls see us way above 10%, which seems to be more likely.

Germany is in for a big surprise on September 22nd!

I did some doodling with my track planning program yesterday evening, while Petra was watching a boring talk show. Remember those 5 little vids I posted the other day? Well, I found them so inspiring I tried my hand on a scenic Z scale modular layout, just for the fun of it. My choice of location is the Goppenstein station, right at the entrance of the Loetschberg tunnel. I have very fond memories of that place, as my family spent quite a number of summer vacations in that area. As a child, I was fascinated by the ride through the tunnel. The road to the south of Switzerlands ends in Goppenstein and you have to load the car onto a train to be ferried through the tunnel. The 20 minute ride through the dark tunnel was kind of scary to me.

I found a near to scale drawing of Goppenstein station which I employed in sketching up the plan for the station module.

now all I need is space, time and money to build it Whistling

Rob, sorry to hear about your loss.

Blessings to all!

GOOD FRIDAY MORNING!!!

Today is Friday, September 6th, 2013!!

Make it a great day!!

Today's Fun limerick:

There was a young lady from Lynn,

Who was so excessively thin,

That when she assayed

To drink lemonade

she slipped into the straw and fell in!

Olde Tyme Words:

When you read the limerick, Did you 'Kench' ?- {To laugh really loud}

Do you paint 'Bloncket' on your trains? - Refers to a color that's gray or a light, blue-ish gray.

It's been a  LOOONG time since I had natural 'Emmetropia' - Visual term that means 20-20 vision. When you don't need any eye corrections done

“Foaming at the mouth”

Meaning: Very, very angry Origin: Like many other idioms, it may have  first been used by Bill Shakespeare. In Julius Caesar, he refers to the  soon-to-be-deposed king as having been less than pleased when he “fell down in  the market-place, and foamed at mouth.” An alternate theory points to rabid  dogs, which literally foam at the mouth. Good Morning!!!

Eggs, hashbrowns and gravy please. Yup, and coffee too thank you.

Sunny, with a high near 89.

Garry- Happy Anniversary yesterday!!! Ours is tomorrow.

Rob- sorry to hear about Bucky.

Paul-  Can you see yet? I hope all went well with the surgery. I guess you’re still coming back today.

This is it. It's here. Fall Festival starts tonight at 5:30Yes. Today could be real touchy. I of course, will be wo*king at the restaurant so I’ll pretty much miss it. But that’s ok cause it’s just a band to kick things off. And it is right outside the restaurant. Main day is tomorrow. Yup, same day as our Anniversary. Now if I scheduled something on that day, even if it was the first weekend after Labor day, or the second weekend of September or first…, whatever criteria they use, I’d never hear the end of it. So I just tell everybody what a big shindig I’m throwing for her uptown on the boulevard. She says “Ya, and I’m doin all the work!” I say  “well you should because if were up to me, our anniversary would consist of TV and Ziva…” ♫ turn out the lights…the parties over.Dead  Laugh Speaking of that, Hmmwe may just go to the Outback Sunday since ya’ll’s brung it up. Sounds good. We haven’t been there in a coons age but used to go about once a month and I said like someone else earlier, I never had a bad meal there. Always real good. 'Cept the last couple times. Not what I’d say was quite bad, but I wouldn’t say good either. Not by a long shot. Anyway, that was seeeeveral years ago so…hey. Sounds good. I remember once, and only once, we went there and they had cream of onion soup and I tell you what, that was the BEST I ever had. I mean I could have eaten a gallon. They never had it again. Maybe I just didn’t hit it right.

Hope to see you tomorrow morn, but yuh never know. Depends on how things go.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Good morning, Chloe.  I will have a large coffee with one of those cinnamon rolls with heavy frosting.  I will sit in this back booth and see who shows up.

Happy anniversary, Garry.

Rob,  Sorry to hear about Bucky.  That would plague me to the end wondering what happened.

Not much on the MR front.  We had painters come in on the 24-25 of August and the weather won't let them finish.  What a mess not having gutters.

I will try to check in more often.

Hiya Gang!Cowboy

More Coffee Flo,,,gas tank is about empty! Coffee Thanks!

Ever have something tick you off, and it ruins your whole day? Sigh Yesterday I listed the John Deere on ebay, only to have them cancel the listing an hour later. Grumpy Why, it was "miscatagorised".  Thier suggestion was to relist it with lawnmowers.  Um,, this thing is 5 feet tall not including the exhaust stack, and weighs 3,000 pounds! This is not a lawnmower.!! Its a farm tractor that cuts grass. So one by one I went through 5 people, all of which English was a 2nd language, trying to relist it in ebay Motors under "other". ( with other tractors)  They kept insisting since it had a mower deck, it was a lawn mower!!Super Angry  Finally, after 58 minutes, I got transferred to a 6th person, a young lady with a bubbly personality and a Midwestern tone to he voice. She reviewed all the info with me, and suggested a better category than anyone else had. Business & industrial/Heavy Equipment/tractors. Finally someone with a solution!Big Smile  Re-listed it yesterday, now have 76 page views and 4 followers, and it hasn't been a full day yet! Big Smile Still it darkened my mood yesterday. It took looking at the stats this morning to fully pop me out of that funk!

Plus Son #4 left for China yesterday, wont see him back til June 2014, he'll be back for the summer then back to China for another year. Sigh Dad will miss the boy who's most like him.

Rob, Sorry for your loss

Paul, hope everything is alright,,,,can you see me??

Ulrich! GO gettum!

Well, gotta wash the car, go to the LHS, cut the lawn, and do Mole control today. L8ter! Big Smile

Morning all!

Whew talk about chilly Indifferent! Woke up this morning to cool weather and heavy fog coming up from the river. Could barely see a few hundred yards. This is typical around these parts between September and early November and usually signals the beginning of cooler weather and Fall.

Took my wife to work today. Our travels parallel the Norfolk Southern line and we were able to catch a loaded coal train headed North towards Pittsburgh. It was quite haunting to see the fog light up from it's head lights and ditch lights, hear it's horn and bell, but not actually see the locomotive until it was right on us (not literally obviously). I wish I had my camera handy Sad.

Have some chores to do outside and then I plan on sitting down to plan out my Son's new N scale layout that I want to build for his Birthday. Nothing huge, something that will fit under his bed but has more operational options then his current oval and one switch layout. He wants a modern grain elevator (which I already bought but need to assemble) and something that will let him haul 90 to 100 ton coal hoppers...no pressure on me huh Confused!

Have a GREAT DAY all!

Happy modeling.

Don.

Zoe, coffee, please!

I spent most of today working on my speeches for the next days. I think I deserve a break!

Barry - the module is "only" about 9´by 3´ ( a notch less than that), which translates into 22´9" by 7´6" in HO scale.

Building the module is not that difficult - with the exception of the catenary. Swiss catenary looks quite a lot different from the one Marklin sells, so I would have to make my own. I Z scale, thta´s more than just a challenge...

Edit: I got tops, so order up, you chow hounds - it´s all on me!

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, just a cup of dark roast coffee and a couple of those sour cream glazed donuts over there...

I have two and a half hours to finish cleaning the dump I live in...  Then a several hour work session with the folks from the reunion committee.

The doc gave me some nose spray to use to help me breathe better at night.  Actually slept well last night.

Sue, good to see you!

Best get moving!
