Good morning......

Jeff .... I have a suspician the Burlington F3 will not be Burlington for long.

Sue ... Good to see you. Thanjks for the anniversay wishes. Say "Hi" to Larry.

Todd ... Thanks for the anniversary wishes. Happy anniversary to you and Brenda tommorrow.

Ulrch .... I like the track plan.

My sister left this morning. She was with us starting with our shared b'day on Tuesday. She was with us for our anniversary dinner yesterday.

Yesterday, we were driving through the Land Between the Lakes and also to Fort Donelson where the Confederates used huge cannons to defend against Union gunboats moving on the Cumberland River. One of the cannons could fire a 128 pond shot over three miles. When the Union gunboats came around the bend in the distance in one of these photos, it was fired on. Most cannons were not that big, however. They fired cannon balls which crashed through wood decks of the gun ships. The gun ships were river steam boats with armor on the sides.  These are older pictures.

Been a little busy work on the Burlington F3. I have the drive out of it and will likely start on disassembling it later today. For now the Burlington shell is on an Athearn blue box power chassis. I wanted some weight in it but the Athearn superweight sits a bit too high so it makes the shell ride high and it's a bit heavier than I wanted. So I spent a couple of hours slowly cutting and grinding it down to size. The top middle portion has been removed and the rest of the top has been ground down about an eighth of an inch. Now the shell looks right at home on the weighted chassis.

According to USPS tracking my Dremel chuck should arrive today. I've been using the old one this morning. It only jammed up twice. But then I only changed bits twice too. Getting the bit out requires that I remove the chuck and insert a small screwdriver in the rear of it and push the bit out. Then I have to use the screwdriver to force the chucks teeth open. After twelve plus years it's just worn out. No other plans for today.

I did something this morning I'm rather proud of. I changed out two light bulbs in an overhead fixture on my own. There's an exercise machine close by. So I balanced on my one foot and hung onto the exercise machine with my left hand while I reached up and changed the light bulbs out with my right hand. That's an accomplishment in itself.

Good morning folks, well it was an interesting night last night. Thunder and lightning came and took out the power in the local area, so I've been loading my stuff up into our camping trailer as we're headed down into Oregon for a couple days. So I'll see ya'll later!

Disassembled the Varney F3 drive today for an inspection and I liked most of what I saw. There's very little wear on the gears (all plastic). The front (shaft driven) truck was clean. I found a couple of small metal filings in the rear (power) truck and fished them out with tweezers. I can't find any part of the loco they could have come from so I suspect they could have gotten in through the lube hole in the bottom of the truck. The motor is a bit dirty therefore stiff. It can wait until I have access to my cleaning supplies, whenever that is. Probably a couple of months. My father is happy that I'm 'playing' with cheap trains again instead of expensive computers. Little does he know that I'm simply alternating hobbies. Boy will he be surprised! The F3 I polished the other day is already tarnishing so I guess Zamac tarnishes pretty quickly. Got my new Dremel chuck today. For those who are curious it's the type that you tighten with your fingers, just like the old one.

Well that's all for today. See y'all tomorrow.

morning coffee in the diner..

GOOD SATURDAY MORNING!!

Today is saturday, September 7th, 2013!!

Today is a Kilt wearin' day, for a wee bit, for me!

{and you never ask a Scotsman what is under his kilt, no matter how bad it 'kilt's' you to avoid doing so !!!}

MAKE IT A GREAT DAY!!

Today's fun limerick:

There was a young lady named May,

Who read a love story every day.

"It's funny," she said,

When at least she was wed;

"I didn't think life was this way."

OR it could have happened this way:

There once was an old man of Esser,

Whose knowledge grew lesser and lesser,

It at last grew so small

 He knew nothing at all,

So now he's a college professor.

OLDE TYME WORDS:

Heterography - Incorrect spelling; or a spelling that is different than the one in current use. For example: Tire and Tyre, Catalog and Catalogue, time and tyme

Mututatial - Something that is borrowed. (rare)

Tralatitious - Means traditional; handed down from generation to generation

Good Morning Folks!

Just a coffee to go for me this morning, as I must be on my way to Hannover in a few minutes. It´s a 100 miles drive, so a little over an hour Whistling

It´ll be a fun day today - some ultra left wingers have announced action against our rally Cool. Reminds me of my adolescent days Smile, Wink & Grin. The place will be swamped with security staff, so we will be in for fun and games...

Have a great day!

Morning guys

A quick stop in before I go to the train club.

I finally got in touch with BLI the other day. They don't have the boards for my NW2 or C30-7 anymore. I looked at my P2K Locos with sound and noticed that they have similar boards. I'm electing to use my U28Bs board in my C30-7 for the time being. I'll probably get a Bowser U25B around Christmas, so I could use that for sound consisted with the U28Bs...

Rob, Sorry to hear about the horse...

Jeffery, if you could, would a coat of clear prevent the zamac from tarnishing?

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

It probably would but I don't consider it important at this point. I'm going to paint it in the L&A colors later.

#4 son emailed me from Nanjing China this morning, long trip, hardly any sleep, head cold starting, but he is settled into his dorm and has 2 days to recuperate til classes start.  2nd trip to China, 1st to Nanjing. Once he gets familiar with the city he's going to hunt down a hobby shop and report back on the cost of a Bachmann QJ over there. He seems to think that , even with shipping, he can send me one cheaper than I can get it here. I told him not to rush, after all, he'll be there 2 years!

Otherwise not much on the train front,,,going to clean the wife's office building this morning, then try to catch more moles later. (the place looks like a scene from Caddyshack!)

Mornin' everyone!  Oh!  Hi Sue!  Glad to see you stopping by again.

Zoe, hot coffee, dark roast as always and a bowl of hot oatmeal with brown sugar please.   Ccccccold here this morning!

Currently 64°F outside this morning under very heavy, thick, dark clouds.  No shadows out there at all.  Meaning =the little wheel making electric production is not moving very fast today.  Oh well, bound to have some days like this.

Slept well again last night and almost feel slept out for a change.  Guess the nose spray is w*rking for me.

I'm about to head out to the museum for the afternoon as there is a large antique car club driving from the Buffalo area to the museums and they want the full tour.  Found out late last night there will be two of us doing the tours, so that takes a bit of pressure off me.

Finished the old Packard truck model last night and poured another wall for the octagon blacksmith shop.  Need to get myself moving big time on that project because...  Ah, I can't tell you yet.  It's a secret....  shhhh....

Catch you all later!

Tootle!

I remember that book.  "Stay on the track, no matter what," right?  As I recall, he had a bad habit of lying down in the grass with the cows and the sheep, and had to be taught how to be a locomotive.  I've had engines like that myself, but mostly, it's bad track work.

I had great modeling plans for the weekend, but daughter Annie came home for a visit and to deal with some procedural things, so we're spending some time together instead.  We got her car inspected (successfully, this time, after having the headlight covers buffed clear) and got her a credit card of her very own.  Next, we'll get her bicycle adjusted, go for a ride, and then decide what we'll make for dinner.  Cooking together is such great fun.

Been working on the metal F3A this morning. I cut out the front coupler opening in the pilot and I drilled out the portholes. That was almost like w*rk! The coupler opening isn't exactly squared but it's good enough for me. I drilled a pilot hole with a 1/8" bit from the back side. Then using a cordless slow speed drill I went to the next bigger bigger bit and wallowed the hole out to either side then went to the next bigger bit, etc until I got up to 1/4". I then used an engraving bit of all things to square the hole (oval at that point) as much as I could.

For the portholes I drilled a 1/8" pilot hole dead center in each one without a drill press, just my Dremel held in my hand. It took a lot of time, a lot of patience and a lot of care. I then used the cordless drill again as I had to go to a 5/32" bit then a 3/16". Using my Dremel again I used a small diamond bit to clean up the holes and remove any burs. Now for the photos.

Good afternoon all,

We are going to the Civic Light Opera here in Pittsburgh tomorrow for the last show of the season. It is a production of "The Lion King". We haven't seen a production of this play before, so we are looking forward to it. Hope it lives up to the great reviews it has been getting locally. Maybe I'll get some secret insights into the world of "The Broadway Lion".

We did go railfanning earlier today, and it was a succesful outing as far as I'm concerned. Six trains in 2 hours. Moreover, on an eastbound intermodal I caught Norfolk Southern's heritage unit, The Penn Central #1073.

Then about 20 minutes later on a westbound intermodal was the Jersey Central Lines #1071.

So Ray, how did the meeting go with the ladies from your class? Did they arrive with white gloves armed with clip boards for a formal inspection? I'll bet they could have cared less, and were just pleased to enjoy your hospitality and company.

Looking forward to dinner tonight as the wife has a crock pot full of home made beef stew simmering away. It sure smells good here in the house. We will have another good meal tomorrow as w are going to one of our favorite restaurants after the show. They have a pot roast and garlic mashed potatoes dinner that I really like.

Hoping everyone enjoys the weekend and stays safe.    Tom

Won another Varney all-metal F3A in an Ebay auction today, one of the very few times I've bothered to compete in one. I usually just pay the 'Buy-It-Now' price and be done with it. However this time there weren't any on the buy it now list but there were close to a dozen on the auction list. I tried for a pair of Varney metal F3B shells last night but was outbid and the same on a metal F3A this morning. Third time was the charm. Put in a max bid of $21 and I came out as top bidder. It should be here by the end of this coming week, sometime from the 10th to the 12th. I intend to put it on an Athearn drive like I did the one I worked on today.

Wow jeff, your hauling in those Varney loco's lately.

Not much going on here, typical fall weather here lately as it was 8c yesterday morning and today its close to 25c with them calling for temps closer to 40c by Tuesday. I might have to throw the A/C on for a while as I have had the windows open all day and its feeling damp as it has been raining all day.

Well, I might put the bike away for the season. I ride in the mornings and it doesn't get light now until close to 7am and just don't really have the urge right now. Plus it will get getting cool out soon.

On the railroad front today I have done some cleaning on the railroad and workbench and ran some trains.

We went to the Dundee Scottish festival...just down the road form RAY.

No, we didn;t see RAY Today, didn't think of it until we on the way, couldsa seen if he was home and get a tour of his Mighty Pike. Sigh

ANother day, perhaps, since Ray is NOT happy aobut not producing no power on his grid today. Was cloudy, but didn't rian in Dundee...

Naturally owre my kilt! Had to go by the pharmacy tp hsow the lady pharmacist, she was curious!

JaBEar: There is quite a biot to my girth these days too, so I have lots to cover with my kilt too... sad but true...

TIred and exhausted doesnt' begin to describe my back and hip these days, I can hardly do a 1/2 day's outting any more with my back and hip!

Would not have been the best company at Ray's anyway, as I would have creeked and groaned and moaned as it was a 2 hour trip away on way! and I was grouchy when we left finaly.

The kilt is away for the season now, as we won't have another such fest to go to until probably next year. Tie to clean dna put away for the winter and hope it fits come spring!

Dinner will be chinese tonight..so I don't have to cook!

Later all you gators...

Evening guys

I finally got those 24 Walther's Coal gondolas in the mail today. It took 4 days to get from Indiana to here, but a package from California only took 2. What's up with that?

Anyways, I 've got the loads about 75% completed for them (I used the 13 I have already to make the 24 for the new ones ahead of time. I still have to form and paint them, but that doesn't take long.

I did go to the mrr club, and founf out what was really wrong with the C30-7. One of the speakers died, and because they were in series, the other one didn't work... I just cut it out and wired it for 1 speaker and it works fine. I also gave my veteran F45s and SD45s a quick run and gave them a little bit of momentum. I plan to match them to my 2 C30-7s and the ATSF SD40-2...

After I got done there, I helped my father clean out the car port and the wood pile under it. I found of family of rats. 8 infants and 1 big one. The big one got away, but I ended up crushing the skulls of 7 of the 8 infants with a 2' long 4x4 piece of wood. Delilah (german shepard/lab mix) came up around the time I was about the crush the 6th one's skulland started sniffing around. She stepped on one and it squealed, she jumped, then proceded to pick it up, chew on it, and drop it a few times. Then she ran off with and and I presume she ate it or chewed it up (she chews on rocks and sea shells, so a baby rat should be nothing). I kinda feel bad about killing the little guys, but I know they carry disease and I don't want them around. At least my sister wasn't around or she'd be bawling (she gets upset every time I kill a full-size one).

Tom, nice catch. Unfortunately they rarely send anything good my way. (A friend caught a BCRail 8-40CM here with a bunch of UP SD90MACs here though)

Evening all,

I have been railfanning for about 5 or 6 years now, but more in the last year than ever before. When I come home I usually download any photos and save that group with the date as the file name. The problem was in going back to find certain egines, foreign power and the like, I had no idea where they were. As I couldn't come up with a better system, I decided to create a spreadsheet and list each locomotive by number, railroad name, model, location and date. I was very surprised to see how many different engines I have as of today. The total is  1,374 different locomotives. Now I'm only counting each engine once, but many I have seen a dozen or more times. It's now pretty easy to find that odd Canadian Pacific or heritage unit. Now that number only includes ones I have photos of. I have seen many more, but don't include them in the count. For instance, we saw 3 trains on the way to the location where we usually park, so that was about 11 engines seen, but not recorded.

I'm curious how anybody else catalogs their photos and if they would be willing to share their method.

Good evening gang!!Cowboy

Commercial time, NASCAR is on . just a cold drink Flo!.

Rat patrol , is that like Mole Patrol Tom? Wink

Speaking of which, got 2 so far. Speared 1 with a 2 ft long screwdriver, poking around in a mound. Stuck the tip in, and the screwdriver vibrated just like a fishing pole does when you hook one. I just ran that one through. After reviewing the setting instructions for the 3rd time, I found what I was doing wrong and reset the spike trap. 2 hours later and <snap> mole shish kebab!  Laugh SWMBO and I flattened all the mounds, and since 10 a.m. we have seen NO new bumps in the yard. keep the fingers crossed!

Well, back to the race!!

Good evening, everyone.  Just a glass of chocolate milk for me  It's been a busy but enjoyable day, with my daughter in town.  We ended up going for a bike ride, a genteel ride, mostly on the Minuteman Bikeway between our town of Bedford and the next one down, Lexington.  It's a former railroad bed, pretty flat and easy to ride.  We stopped in Lexington to have some lunch, and sat with a couple who were also biking.  We biked back home, and after cleaning up we made my stuffed flounder for dinner, and had a bottle of wine while watching an episode of Game of Thrones.  We've been downloading these, but I think I'll have to get them on DVD.  They are very good, and I'm sure wife Penny will enjoy watching them.

It's been a busy day and I'm tired. Working on that F3 was a challenge. The first time I tried drilling out the portholes in one it didn't turn out so good. Bu my drill bits weren't so good either. the best I could do is press hard while the metal came out in fine flakes. Today the Zamac was spiraling off in long curly-Q's. I had to work to keep the drills speed slow so it wouldn't cut through too fast or possibly vibrate the Zamac enough to damage it. I have seen cases where it shattered.

Well that's enough for today. See y'all tomorrow.
