morning coffee in the diner...

GOOD SUNDAY MORNING!!!

Today is Sunday, September 1st, 2013!!!

MAKE IT A  GREAT DAY!!!

The Sultan got sore on his harem,

And invented a scheme for to scare 'em;

 He caught him a mouse

Which he loosed in the house

(The confusion is called harem-scarem.)

With your trains, do you sometimes feel 'Limerance' ? The initial exhilarating rush of falling in love; the state of being in love.

Along the same vein, how about 'Rident'? - Laughing or cheerful

Well, this was all 'Tilly-vally!' - An expession that means nonsense.

“It’s raining cats and dogs”

Meaning: It’s raining heavily

Origin {it's a bit gross, I warn you}:

There are roughly 200 theories on  this one. The most probable? In 17th-century England, public sanitation wasn’t  what it is today—hence during deluges, rain coursing down the streets would  often carry dead animals with it. As a result, even though cats and dogs never  literally showered down from above, they became associated with severe  rainstorms.

Afore it gets cold, we will visit BIG SKY COUNTRY...that's right...MONTANA!!!

We take the Empire Builder {Chicago - St. Paul/Minneapolis  - Milwaukee - Spokane - Portland/Seattle}:

Experience the Rugged Splendor of the American West

Traveling daily between Chicago and the Pacific Northwest along major portions of the Lewis and Clark trail, the mighty Empire Builder takes you on an exciting adventure through majestic wilderness, following the footsteps of early pioneers.

From Chicago, you'll have magnificent views of the Mississippi and see the glowing night skyline of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Awake the next morning as you cross the North Dakota plains and travel over the spectacular Gassman Coulee Trestle. Skirting the Missouri, you'll cross into the Big Sky country in Montana. Visit Glacier National Park during the Centennial celebration, and enjoy educational programs, art events and special activities commemorating the 100th anniversary of the park. From Spokane, you can continue on to Seattle or head down the Columbia River Gorge toward Portland for spectacular views of Mt. Hood and Beacon Rock.

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and the Sunday Breakfast Buffet!!!! I love the buffet. No decisions as to what to eat over something else. Just dig in to whatever strikes your fancy.

A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1pm. Patchy fog before 9am. Otherwise, partly sunny, with a high near 92.

I liked to fell over. There was ¾ of a tank of gas in her carSurprise. Then I remembered oh yah, I put gas in it a couple weeks ago when I pulled it in the garage wondering if I could actually make it across town to the gas station.

Ray- oh yes. You’ve heard of women…., people actually, who are gas and go? Well Brenda is key and go. She puts gas in it only if she absoLUTEly has to and puts it off until absoLUTEly necessary. And now since this one has no key, she just goes. I’m glad it’s just you over powering  your meds with an over zealous dinner.

Hey Duke! Good to see you.

Happy Fathers Day to you Aussies!! (and anyone else who celebrated it)

Welp, hopefully it’ll rain today. I should get out and even the grass up in case it does. Last night, Brenda informed me as we were in the restaurant (uptown here in Williamsville), that today we’ll need to go into town for something else that I forget what she said because I said..”you mean where we were just at? For something you knew you needed?!!” She said “I didn’t think you wanted to go there today since we’ve already been to those others” or something like that.  I said I’d rather go to one or two more in one day than spread it over 38!! Not matter. We’ll see what happens today. She has the wedding shower at 2 so… Since she doesn’t get moving til about 10 or 11 on a weekend, I’ll find out if she wants to go somewhere at noon and cram it in there so we can go clear across Springfield for one store only to run out of time and have to go BACK to Springfield tomorrow. THEN she can say something like…”I thought you were going to put a gutter on the shed and touch up the yard and do some cleanup in the garage this weekend. I got my stuff done I wanted to do.”

New fashion statement at the Dollar Tree in Springfield!! Went to “her” Chinese buffet yesterday and she wanted to stop in to this Dollar Tree store ( where there are no trees and things are more than a dollar by the way) and there shopping was a not unattractive at all woman in her seemed to be mid to late twenties and a maybe 8 year old girl. The woman was wearing a nice lightweight white dress.  I remember thinking that it was a very cool (temperature cool) looking dress and how she looked nice when she went out in public. Simply nothing fancy, nothing overboard. Just a plain white summer dress cut appropriately above the knee. After passing this woman twice I asked Brenda, “is that a slip?”........ “Yes”.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Good morning. It's 74° with 93% humidity. The high will be 95° and will feel like 106°.

Today I intend to inspect the O.K. shorty Streamline passenger cars I received yesterday. My initial 'quick' inspection yesterday showed that they need a lot of work. Perhaps with a more thorough inspection I'll be able to find some shortcuts. One I can see on the RPO right now is one of the grabs looks like it needs to be replaced. But if I squeeze it with my pliers I should be able to straighten it without removing it from the car.

Any work on the Varney F3 is at a standstill for now until I get the parts I need for it. Hence the Athearn chassis that are due Tuesday. Haven't heard anything yet on the powered Varney F3. It'll probably ship Tuesday. Tuesday, Tuesday, Tuesday! I'm starting to sound like the captain of the Enterprise-B explaining that many important things they need NOW won't be installed until Tuesday.

No other plans for today. Yet.

  Morning All,

Currently it is 63 with an expected high of 94. Still a bit smokey, but a shift in the wind yesterday reduced it a little.

My foot feels better, ice and med's seemed to help, so I will try and go to w**k today. Eye also seems to be healing nicely.

  Prayers to all in need.

Morning all!

Coffee and toast if you please.

So, I walked up to the old Diner this morning and found the doors locked and the lights off. I peeked inside expecting to see everyone hunkered down and hiding, playing some Sunday morning tee-hee-hee joke on me. Much to my consternation, I didn't see anyone and began to fret that perhaps the economy had caught up to our beloved diner (that, or perhaps I either smelled funny and/or offended someone and was no longer welcome..Laugh). Then I remembered that it was September 1st and the roving diner had made it's monthly pilgrimage down the road. *WHEW*...Smile, Wink & Grin.

*SIP*

Anyways, I ordered my Son his new N Scale locomotive on Thursday. The little guy worked really hard for it, doing his chores around the house without complaining or having to be told, and not irritating his older Sister (which is considered to be a sport to him Wink). He chose a Kato SD80MAC in Norfolk Southern livery (#7210). He couldn't decide between the NS SD80MAC or a Canadian Pacific SD90 (chip off the old block that boy what with his penchant for EMD's...Whistling...). But, we see NS everyday here and we have both seen #7210 in person, so he went with that. Besides, his birthday is next month so I think I will order him the CP SD90 as part of his gifts.

*SIP...SLURP*

Well fellas, gotta shove off. I have a long list of chores of my own to get to plus I want to watch the Pirates vs. Cards on TV...how about them Pirates!!!!!

Have a GREAT DAY all and happy modeling!

Don.

Hmm

Typical for Sept/ labor day: Tomorrow will be 82F, and the very next day will be a whole 68F! Then, by the 15th, we will stay in the 60s for certain, usually the lower 60s.

Time to lather up the leather jacket I guess...make it ready for fall.

well, off toget the day really started,..

Good Afternoon Gang!

Is it September already? Somehow, I seem to have lost track of time. My schedule is filled to the brim with campaigning and all sorts of other party work - not always nice things. We still see a lot of action by leftist group against our campaign aides, although it has become a little less violent than in previous days. Polls still rise - not the official ones, paid by the "established" parties. The support we see is overwhelming, so the current poll results may even be a little underestimated.

3 weeks till show down!

September 22nd is the big day! Till then, I have a lot of trips to make, speeches, rallies. Most of them are pretty boring when compared what you guys over the Big Pond do. I wouldn´t mind having a more colorful and entertaining campaign. I suggested hiring a band of pipes & drums for our march to the European Central Bank, when Mario Draghi is awarded his prize. But, alas, No one got hooked on the idea Mischief

One of these sllepless nights I now have, I found a series of vids descriping how to build a Z scale layout. Although narration is in German (with a thick Swiss accent), there are fun to watch.

watch?feature=playerdetailpage&v=YjB LFUI6cU

watch?v=ue9SVYIgWn8

watch?v=pUvCTE6jkfk

watch?v=yNwKi74NA7w

watch?v=WtCBaOs4NwI

Enjoy watching this chap building a fantastic layout with a spectacular scenery in no time, with lots of cheap materials. Very inspirational.

Have a good one!

Jeff - I am happy to read your doing fine! Angel for you (and all others in need).

Looks like a good day for now going to get the 12 pack of Coca-Cola four for 10 $ and it will be Fried Chicken legs for this afternoon and go to the layout and run the train with the AC6000CW locos and change them out after their run and get another set of locos out for the next run so have a great day everyone.

I spent the morning working on the O.K. passenger cars. Just little stuff like gluing doors back in place, putting window film back in place, putting vents on some cars, fitting an antenna to the roof of the observation car, mounted trucks on said observation car as well as put the end panel in it (that was a pain in the butt). The ends in one of the cars were cracked so I replaced them with a couple I found in the parts bag. I also straightened a few bent grabs. The RPO is the only car that has them. A stirrup under one of the doors was a royal pain in the butt. There's a couple of cars that need diaphragms. I don't know where I'm gonna find those. Did I say that the cars are all metal? Well except for the floor and underside detail of some of them. The others are all metal.

Good Afternoon Gang!

September 22nd is the big day!

ULRICH

That is your big day, mine is the 25th, the big FIVE-OH.

The onlyest thing I got out of the video was something about "was ist das mit essen ein ei in die eisenplatz mit Kaffee, danke shoene und bitte, auf viedersehen , ich leibe dich mutti"

Here's hoping everyone is enjoying the Holiday weekend, especially you folks that have to face getting up and going to work on Tuesday. Most of the past week has been hot and humid with scattered rain showers here. It might have something to do with getting old, but I'm not adjusting too well to these wide temperature swings we have had this summer. Hopefully the forecasters are right and temperatures and the humidy will be more moderate this coming week.

Not too much to report from here.  Took the car back to the dealer for an oil & filter change, tire rotation and wiper refills. Sat around most of the morning waiting, and then when told the car was ready, was told they didn't rotate the tires as I requested because they didn't look like they needed it. I really lost it and told the service manager that was because I rotate them on a regular basis. Anyway, to avoid making a fool out of myself I left and will take the car to a local tire shop this week and get them rotated there.

We went to our usual railfanning spot yesterday and saw 7 trains in 2 hours. 4 intermodals and 3 nice mixed freights, including 3 of the Conrail "Coil Shield" cars that ExactRail has announced they will be producing. Then we decided to go down to the "Strip District" here in Pittsburgh today. Caught 3 NS engines running light passing through the train shed at the old Penn Station, then returning later on with a nice mixed freight from the Island Avenue Yard. The only other activity was a NS coal train (empty) and an Allegheny Valley Railroad LPG unit train headed west towards NS's Island Avenue Yard. That one had three GP40-3s that I haven't seen before, so I was happy to catch them.

Came home, took a nap, then had a nice dinner. Homemade meat loaf, mashed potatoes & gravy, sweet peas, chocolate pudding and a bottle of Reisling from Seneca Lake. I also made some motel reservations after dinner. One is for a great nephews birthday party later this month in Harrisburg, and the other was for the train show in Timonium this coming October. Looking forward to both of those events.

Here's one of the cars I worked on today, the RPO.

I straightened some of the grabs as best I could with the few tools I have on hand. Pliers, needlenose pliers, small flat blade screwdriver. Using the pliers I could straighten grabs that were bent to one side or the other. Using the screwdriver I could push or pry grabs that were bent in toward the car or out away from it by pressing or prying. a couple of the roof vents were missing so I replaced those. The doors were loose or knocked out completely. They were still with the car so I opened it up and glued the doors back in place and straightened up the mess that was the window glazing. One of the grabs on the roof is still bent as I never got around to straightening it. There's a lot of what I'm guessing is supposed to be rust around the doors and on some parts of the body. As I have neither paint nor brush I'll leave it be for now. The car still needs a lot of work but it already looks much better than it did yesterday. Here are some photos taken after the work was done today.

Evening guys

Busty day at work again. I dread what tomorrow will be like...

I tried putting the passenger's side header on, but no luck. I can't jack the engine up enough to get it to clear the starter mount in the bell housing. That or it hits the valve cover... Gonna try something tomorrow.

Evenin' folks...  Montainer,eh.....  Hmm  I have a friend out at the museum, in fact she was out there working today, who goes rail fanning out there in the dead of Winter!  In blizzards!  Really!!

Sounds like an interesting trip, it does.

We ended up having 5 people show up to be Museum guides today.  Only two of us were in the list..  We had fun and there were lots of visitors there.  Good crowd all day long.  Next time I will be out there will be next Saturday when there will people from the Lake Erie Antique Automobile Club of Americas visiting us.  Frankly I want to get up to the other end and see what they are driving...Smile, Wink & Grin

Ended August with just under 600 kWh of electric produced, making it the second highest month so far.

Just finished making a potato Salad for the Labor Day bash at my son's house tomorrow and think I should head out to bed soon.

Later!  Prayers for all whether you need them or not!

Howdy ... We just returned from being in Nashville today to see family.

Everybody her in the Diner looks busy.

Ulrich ... Thanks for taking time to visit here in the Diner ansd thanks for sharing the videos.

Galaxy .... Thanks for moving the Diner. Going to the Pacific Northwest on the Empire Builder is a good idea.

The pre-Amtrak Empire Builder was hauled by the Burlington between Chicago and the Twin Cities. Same with the North Coast Limited. I could watch those trains along with many others from my house when I was growing up

Here is photo I found on the internet of the Empire Builder and the North Coast Limited combined and  running on the CB&Q. Both trains always had Bulrington locomotives for that leg of the trip.

Amtrak took over the Empire Builder and changed its route to the Milwaukee Road from Chicago to the Twin Cities. It used mostly BN equipment in its early years. Most BN passnegr equipment still had GN, NP, CB&Q, and SP&S lettering at the time.

Here is an early Amtrak Empire Builder running on the Milwaukee Road

She ran--almost flew,

Her complexion did too,

And she reached home exceedingly plain

Well there doesn't seem to be much interest in my current project so I won't trouble you further with multiple photos. Maybe just a description with a single side-on full length photo will suffice. Anyway I'll likely be working on the baggage car today. It's a bit of an odd bird. It has one coupler body mounted and the other coupler is truck mounted. It doesn't need much in the way of real repair work. Most of that I already did when I glued the doors back in place and redid the window glazing. Mostly it needs a good clean-up. Other than that I have no plans for today.

Well, pay any additional. Hmm I don’t believe the Sangamon river has ever been big enough to float anything larger than a Johnboat. But HEY! How ‘bout that scene in the end with the train and the burning trestle, huh??!! IndifferentDon’t tell me that didn’t make you wanna just get up and leave. Talk about traction. You know it was soooo bad, I never even paid attention to what kind of loco. Most likely a 4-4-0, bt hey, in that movie coulda been a Big Boy. This is all my opinion of course, others may have thought it was great. I like brussel sprouts, you may not.

Woo Hooo! Stayed home yesterday and started….started mind you, to clean up the choo choo roomYes!! Unfortunately that was all it was. A start. And I have a long way to go. Today I have to do some things other than traintime. Still haven’t painted and it looks like this could be a good day for it.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

  Morning All,

Currently it is 70 with an expected high of 88 under smokey skies.

W**k day for me, Retail sucks. The only holidays we are closed are, Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

My foot feels better, I think the meds are helping. Eye is healing nicely. Get the right one done this Thursday.

Jeff - Since the cars are metal, is that real rust or someone's attempt at weathering?

   Prayers to all in need.
