Morning coffee in the diner...

GOOD THURSDAY MORNING!!!

Today is Thursday, August 1st, 2013!!

MAKE IT A GREAT DAY!!

Have you ever 'heard it through the grapevine'?:

Meaning:

An indication that a piece of information was obtained via an informal contact.

Origin:

Short version:

Information that is received as unconfirmed or more likely gossip, is said to had come 'through the grapevine'.  The phrase is simple and goes back to all the wires strung between poles for telegraphed Morse Code messages. During the Civil War many messages were received either erroneously (due to transmission) or on purpose to spread false information, and thus was unreliable at best no matter how you looked at it

The longer version:

The first practical public demonstration of the telegraph was given in 1844, when Samuel Morse sent a message from Washington to Baltimore. The invention was widely welcomed as a means of rapidly communicating news. It became clear though that close communities already had effective word-of-mouth communications. Soon after the telegraph was invented the term 'grapevine telegraph' was coined - first recorded in a US dictionary in 1852. This distinguished the new direct 'down-the-wire' telegraph from the earlier method, which was likened to the coiling tendrils of a vine. It's clear that the allusion was to interactions amongst people who could be expected to be found amongst grapevines, i.e. the rural poor.

In 1876, The Reno Evening Gazette ran an article about a bumper corn and grape crop. They commented on the fact that the people who were then called Indians and Negroes seemed to be already aware of it (hardly a surprise you might think as it would have been they who had harvested the crops):

"It would seem that the Indians have some mysterious means of conveying the news, like the famous grapevine telegraph of the negroes in the [American Civil] war. The Pioneer Press and Tribune says that, while the first telegraphic news of Custer's death reached them at midnight, the Indians loafing about town were inquiring about it at noon."

The term 'bush telegraph' originated in Australia, probably influenced by 'grapevine telegraph'. That referred to the informal network that passed information about police movements to convicts who were hiding in the bush. It was recorded in 1878 by an Australian author called Morris:

"The police are baffled by the number and activity of the bush telegraphs."

In the UK it was the 'jungle telegraph' - referring to communications in outposts of the British Empire around the same period.

Of course 'heard it through the grapevine' is best known to many of us as the Motown song, recorded by Gladys Knight & the Pips in 1967 and by Marvin Gaye in 1968. It's salutary that, while the telegraph is long gone, the person-to-person communication that preceded it is still going strong.

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Coffee and any of those turnovers that Garry brought in left? Oh good, I’ll take one. Thanks.

Patchy fog before 7am. Otherwise, sunny, with a high near 82.

V8 Dennis- No, we’ve never had a professional carpet cleaner come in or give an estimate, so I couldn’t tell you what really happens once they get in the door. But I would imagine they will find a reason to make it not so..Confused...reasonable a cost.

Welp, I’m disappointedSigh. For all my hopes and not for the lack of trying, I didn’t get finished yesterday. Soooo close but no bananer.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

August 1, 2013 – Today would have been my Dad’s 100th birthday.  He didn’t get close.  He was a heavy smoker by today’s standards, and passed on at 56.  I never really got to know him as one man to another, only as a son to his father.  That’s a loss to me.

So, Dad, here’s to you.  I’m 66 myself now, and so far, so good.  I got married at a late age, like you, and had one great child.  Penny and I named her Annie, after your Mom.  I figured that since you were the last of 12, we owed her that much, at least.  Annie was the first and only Leslie child born in her generation, the first since your own daughter.  For all of your Mom’s offspring, the next generation shrunk dramatically.  You would be more than proud of her already, and she’s just begun her career.

No, I never made it to the Moon.  Mom thought I would.  You might remember that we got there back in the summer of 1969, but after you left us the program never caught on.  The last human footprint on the Moon was left in 1972, barely more than 3 years after the first.  A lot has changed since then, but I’m not sure that this wasn’t the high point of space exploration for a long time to come.

The nation that you helped defend back in the forties is still here.  Enemies have become friends, and friends have become enemies.  Wars have been fought, won, and to tell the truth, lost.  The oceans that keep us divided from the rest of the world have kept us safe, and my own career has mostly been spent trying to guarantee that safety.

Mom left us almost two decades ago, but, well, you probably know that.  She never really recovered from losing you.  I don’t suppose any of us ever did.

Happy 100th Dad.

Still feeling like 50 miles of bad road today, but the work must get done. No sense in complaining. As my Dad used to say, "If you want to run with the wolves then don't whine like a puppy" Laugh!

 Morning All,

Currently it is 60 with an expected high of 87, should be a nice day. Too bad I have to w**k. It is Thursday so Skype with my son tonight. I forget who asked about him, but her is some background. He lives in Australia at the present time, there on some kind of Visa. He is a assistant manager of a pizza shop. Moved there to be with a young lady he went to high school with. None of us were real happy when he decided to go there in 2011, especially my late wife. He was able to make it back and spend a few weeks with her before she passed away in November.

Was able to accomplish quite a bit yesterday. I got the seventh UP5 panel wired to the rest of them. Cooked a few meals, did laundry, and some vacuuming. Made some calls to relatives I had not spoken to in some time.

  Prayers to all in need.

MisterBeasley - Well said, and a fine tribute to your Dad. I'll be 73 in a few months, and it seems the older I get, the more I think of and appreciate my folks, grand parents and other relatives who have passed on. Boy, did they all give me such great memories. As a kid, we didn't have much, but nobody had a better childhood than I did. Thanks to them all.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I see the place got freshened up overnight!  Guess I'll have a mug of my dark roast coffee and a couple sour cream glazed donuts to start with.

Mr. Beasley, a touching and fitting tribute to your dad.  My Dad would be 100 on September 3rd. Mine was lucky to live a long and good life.  Died at the age of 88 and was healthy right up up to his heart attack.

Tom, you are very right.  History is wated on the young.  You have to have lived a lot of it yourself before you begin to see its importance I think.

Last night I got an emergency email from the Museum.  Somebody forgot to list a group that was supposed to be coming for a tour at the museum today on the spreadsheet so they needed someone to open up and give them the tour when they arrived by trackcar.  I waited a couple hours and emailed the guy who is in charge of scheduling people to work and said i would go out since nobody else had volunteered.  Got up at 7AM this morning to be able to leave on tme to get there.  Just as I was heading out the door I got a phone message saying the group canceled due to the rain this morning.  So I went back to bed for an hour and a half and just got up....

Still haven't heard anything on the iMac problem....  Hope they get in touch soon!

Later!

There are F units, lots of them are made by Kato currently Bachmann did some (way before I was a model railroader probably when I was playing roundy round with my HO scale GP38-2).

This is the one F-unit I own... It keeps company with my E units,

well

only 67F at the airport high on the hill where it is cooler. Probably not much ore warmer down here in the valley.

Well, the Dr.s office called about my right hip MRI. Not so good. It seems I have bursitis, tendonitis and a major tear that an orthopedist needs to examine and maybe{?} repair. So, I wasn't just whistling dixie about the pain it was causing me. The tear that brings tears!

Finally got laundry caught up. Been neglecting it and the dishes to favor the hip by staying off of it completely. Now feeling better, but that's because I have been off it so much. WIll find out the 10 th when we go to to a festival how much it has "healed" {which apparently ti won't}  then and IF I can stand to be on it for a few hours. If it gives me grief, I now know why!

MOH at work. Spent 2.5 hours yesterdayh filling out an online application for another part time job. THey take so long online. They want one to upload one's resume, but then require one to tediously fill in the blanks for all the info on the resume!!! MOH is kinda hoping fo the job. WHy upload the resume if they aren't going to use it???

Well, got to go rest the hip some more.

HAve a good evning.

The only N Scale F unit I have is a Bachmann F9 from the 80's. It was only ever run once to be broken in. That was shortly before I got out of N Scale in the late 80's.

*

Not much happening today. My father and I went to Wal-Mart this morning to get our respective grocery shopping done and I had him stop at the place that's still in the stone age so I could make my payment there. After getting the groceries home and put away I drove my van into town and gassed it up. $50 for 14.289 gallons of gas. That's a little over half a tank. I made sure to leave the engine running while I was filling up as there was a good chance it wouldn't start again until the engine  cooled down. Came across a couple of ancient Mitac AD-1 disk drives in working order and snapped them up for less than $70. That used up my 'fun fund' so no more online shopping until it's replenished. These drives are Apple Disk II clones and weren't produced in what you'd call great numbers so they're somewhat rare, even rarer to be working unlike the ubiquitous Apple Disk II drives that can be found seemingly everywhere.

Jeff, what road for your F9? I just remembered that atlas did some F units too, B-mann was the first to make an N scale BSB GN F unit I know that much.

Lifelike did as well I had an F unit that I chopped up for a plow interesting color scheme may need to get a Kato F7 to paint like that LL BN foobie. come to think of it I need a ton of Kato F's to paint into BN, SP&S, GN, and NP colors. first things first F3A #802 and F7's...( I can't remember at the moment need to look at my SP&S loco diagram.)

It was originally Santa Fe red war bonnet. Now it's basic black painted over the SF scheme.

Evening guys

Got 3 packages in the mail today
Package #1. Atlas Trainman GP39-2 and an Athearn RTR fuel tender. Someone added genesis trucks (the ones with the working roller bearings) and kadees to the later.
Package #2. Atlas Extended vision caboose in MRL. Will be stripped and repainted to BN or traded for a Q, GN, SP&S, or NP caboose.
Package #3, 2x Rapido sleepers. Both were supposed to be phase III, but I got a phase 1 and a Phase 3.

Burlington Northern #24

if you get birds of steel I will definitely join you, I love that game.

I did a quick search for that game and I'm liking what I'm seeing. The price isn't too bad either. Maybe I'll get it with my birthday funds or in a few weeks. I kinda burnt up my funds with those 24 BN coal gons...

Most definitely not. I can hardly handle N Scale anymore. I have enough trouble with HO with my numb hands. If I had the space and money I would have gone with O Scale.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, just a cup of decaf right now please....

Fairly productive day here for me, even spend as few minutes in the train room.  LOL  I did a bank run, got my allergy shot, stopped at Mother Earth Natural Foods and got my supply of Fair Traded, Organic, Dark Roasted Coffee beans for the month of August.  Also got some wonderful dark chocolate bars they carry and some dried tropical fruit.  By the time I got home it had gone from pouring rain to a rarity around these parts called sunshine.  Didn't last long before clouds once again ruled the heavens.  Only made 13.89 kWh today.  On the other hand the Air Conditioner remained off all day so I probably came close to breaking even.

Raked out a patch of dirt where they dumped one pile of topsoil to rough it up.  Then planted grass seed and covered with straw.  Tonight, even though we got a little rain, I watered all the new lawn areas.

Called the Computer place and found he has benched my iMac and did replicate the problem.  He then hooked the iMac to a separate monitor to see if the problem still existed.  It didn't show up so he says he is 99% sure it is the video card and will order one for it.  He says I may have it back by next Monday afternoon.  I'll also be a bunch of $$$ poorer as I didn't buy the extended coverage when I bought the puter....  At least I will be able to get going on the Name Tags I am making for the reunion.

I put together a play list for the music for the reunion today since that I can do on the laptop as that is the computer it will be played from.  After putting all the requested tunes from the committee into the list (They decided only to do 50's and 60"s music for the reunion) I can play for 5.4 hours straight....  Well that is better than if I played all my 50's and 60's music which would be only 48 hours straight.....  It's only for Saturday after dinner.  I may move some of the tunes to the dinner play list to shorten the dance stuff.  At our age we can only twist so many times in an evening and then we want to have emergency crews nearby. Whistling

Tonight I finished the Ford Model T pick up truck for the hillside scene and started putting together a Packard Stake truck for the road in the back.  They are both Tomar Kits.  Then I need to leave that scene for a bit and get to work scratch building the octagonal Black Smiths Shop from Alloway, NY.  A friend of mine who drew the blueprints for me needs to have me get it done....

Hope all of you have a safe and pleasant night.  Prayers for all who are in need!

your font is probably right then, I got mine from a random Internet search I did at least a year ago. Laugh

I love assault horizon, I have a couple WWII sims as well. My favorite Ace combat though has to AC 5.

Alex those are lovely Amtrak units, now if only they were in N scale.

I might try it, maybe GameStop has them. I agree with you on AC5.

Alex, make on the F-units?

Stewart/Bowser. I added American Limited diaphragms, and an NCE decoder.
