Forgot to tell you where the spiffed-up diner is..this month we want to stay cool, so I thought we'd check out a place we haven't before, I don't think.

SO, Without further a-do, to-do, or any other "do", we are in MICHIGAN. There were tracks laid for Mr, Henry Ford, and tracks laid in to Mr. Kellogg's organization {as well as competitor MR. POST's production facilities}.

There are, I believe, tracks from Detroit right on into Chicago now-a-days. More research will show where.

According to Wiki: The name Michigan is the French form of the Ojibwa word mishigamaa, meaning "large water" or "large lake".  Michigan is the 9th most populous of the 50 United States, with the 11th most extensive total area. Its capital is Lansing, and the largest city is Detroit. Michigan was admitted into the Union on January 26, 1837, as the 26th state.

It is also the birthplace of Yours truly.

Trains:

Amtrak's three Michigan routes provide several convenient options for getting around the Wolverine State and beyond.

The Pere Marquette provides one round trip each day between Grand Rapids and Chicago with stations in Grand Rapids, Holland, Bangor and St. Joseph/Benton Harbor.

The Blue Water provides one round trip per day between Port Huron and Chicago with stations in Port Huron, Lapeer, Flint, Durand, East Lansing, Battle Creek, Kalamazoo, Dowagiac, Niles and New Buffalo.

The Wolverine provides three round trips each day between Pontiac and Chicago with stations in Pontiac, Birmingham, Royal Oak, Detroit, Dearborn, Ann Arbor, Jackson, Albion, Battle Creek, Kalamazoo, Dowagiac, Niles and New Buffalo. Special event trains also stop in Greenfield Village

http://www.amtrak.com/michigan-services-train

I'll see if I can dig up other historical routes.

Ok, OK , stop badgering me!

I can read the handwriting on the wall!

Handwriting on the wall:

The quick and dirty explanation:

We know it today as a sign of some upcoming gloom and doom. The origin goes back to the bible when Belshazzar, the successor to King Nebuchadnezzar got drunk one night and drank from sacred vessels from the temple of Jerusalem. It is said that afterward a 'mysterious hand' appeared and wrote 4 strange words on the banquet room wall.  Only Daniel, the prophet, could decypher this writing, which he said was ominous. So, any warning today is referred to as  'the handwriting on the wall.'

Wiki says this:

Meaning:

"The writing on the wall", or "the handwriting on the wall", or "the writing is on the wall" or "Mene Mene", is an idiom for "imminent doom or misfortune" and for "the future is predetermined".

The expression originates from the Book of Daniel,  Chapter 5, from the handwriting on the wall that was witnessed at a banquet hosted by king Belshazzar. As those at the feast profaned the sacred vessels pillaged from the Jerusalem Temple, a disembodied hand appeared and wrote on the palace wall the words, " מנא, מנא, תקל, ופרסין" Or "Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin". The prophet Daniel  was summoned and interpreted this message as the imminent end for the Babylonian kingdom. That night, Belshazzar was killed and the Persians sacked the capital city.

The advisers attempt to interpret the meaning. However, their natural denotations of weights and measures were superficially meaningless: "two minas, a shekel and two parts". Therefore, the King sends for Daniel, an exiled Isrealite taken from Jerusalem, who had served in high office under Nebuchadnezzar. Rejecting offers of reward, Daniel warns the king of the folly of his arrogant blasphemy before reading the text. The meaning that Daniel decrypts from these words is based on passive verbs corresponding to the measure names, "numbered, weighed, divided."

And this is the writing that was inscribed: mina, mina, shekel, half-mina. This is the interpretation of the matter: 'mina', God has numbered the days of your kingdom and brought it to an end; 'shekel,' you have been weighed on the scales and found wanting; 'half-mina,' your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians. —Daniel 5:25–28

your kingdom is divided

Prophetic, as Michigan is also "dividied" by the Great Lakes.

Good morning to all.  July already.  I'll appreciate the 3-day week, although the weather seems stuck in a cloudy, humid pattern and I'll likely hide in the AC much of the time.

Wow Galaxy,,,nice new digs in a cool locale for Flo and the girls!Big Smile

My sister, who now live in N.C., lived several years in Bay City Michigan before the railroad sent her to New Jersey. (She never could explain how that was not punishment.).  I remember vacations, fishing on Lake Huron, fireworks at "the Shell" on the river on July 4th, and how ccccccold the lake was ,even in July!  I can remember walking down the street in Bay City, on the radio they were broadcasting warnings for old folks and young children to stay indoors because of the heat. I had on jeans and a long sleeve Oxford shirt. They looked at me like I was crazy!! Nothing like a Baltimore summer at all! Big Smile

Oh well, job searching then painting a clients engines on tap for today, catch y'all later!Cowboy

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and...Big Smile…you know, I think I’ll have what Paul had from the food trucks please. Thanks.

Isolated showers and thunderstorms after 1pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 77.  Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Whew. Mr B’s right. July already. (shakes head) At this rate I best get the snowblower ready cause in a few days it’ll seem the snow will be flying.

Welp the celebratio…Indifferent..WHOA!!! Sorry G. Just kinda startled me there for a minute. Say Zoe…., would you turn the fan down in here? Yah, it’s um…a bit breezier than it should be for someWhistling. Thanks.

Anyway, as I was saying, the 4th of July in June Celebration went over well once again. Now it’s kinda rest for a month or two for Brenda and then the preperations for the Fall Festival on the 7th of September start to fire up as that roars to a full steam. WHICH just happens to be on our Anniversary of marriage by the way. Now, if it’d been me that scheduled something like that….I’d a died. It wouldn't matter if I said but it's always the first weekend in September. That's an irrelevant fact. But she did, so it’s ok. I just say “they sure are throwing a big party for us. Can I invite the Chinese girls?” No response….verbally anyway. I don’t know sign language but I know what THAT means.Black Eye

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Right you are, Todd.  I was watching the Tour de France last night.  This year, they started the Tour in Corsica, an island in the Mediterranean.  I would have expected it to be hotter than my attic there, but it was in the 70s on the road and the helicopter pictures showed snow in the mountain valleys, presumeably on the north faces where the sun don't shine.

A good thing about July - school is out and the commute is a lot easier.

Happy Canada Day! ..... Gotta love the Canadians, eh! ......

I'll have a Tim Hortons coffee and a Tim Hortons original donut, please!

Galaxy ...... Didn't know MI was your birthplace. Thanks for moving the DIner.

Michigan! ...... That's where I went to college and live most of my adult life. Many of my work years were with CN's Grand Trunk Western and its affiliates DW&P and CV. Between school, the railroad, and other jobs I lived in several MI cities. ... MI is one of 8 states where I have lived during my lifetime. ...... Two of our five adult children now live in MI with their spouses and each has blessed us with 2 grandkids. (other grandkids are in OH and they are here now. No grandkids yet from NC son or AZ daughter) ....... I may post a few MI railroad related photos when I can this month.

Canada Day and Independence Day are celebrated jointly by Detroit and Windsor. I have seen many of the spectacular fireworks displays.

Have a nice day, everybody!

 Morning All,

Currently it is 78 with an expected high of 103.

I was able to wire up two toggle switches and get them installed on the layout yesterday. I have a mid-day shift today, so I should get the third one wired and installed this evening.

Prayers to all in need, especially the families of the fire fighters in AZ who lost their lives.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a shart stack of blueberry pancakes with maple leaf brand maple syrup and lots of dark roast coffee.  Oh, and I got the bill for our wonderful neighbors to the North today.

Happy Canada Day to all our friends North of the Border!

Today is one of Barry's kind of days I think.  ie: dull dark, damp, and dreary....  Currently 68°F with light rain outside.  High will get all the way up to 70°F today....  Galaxy, are you sure it's July?  The total for the month of June on the solar panels was only 516 kWh.  Month of May was 675 kWh.....  Only thing I can say is that it is still on target for the 4700 kWh it is predicted to make for the year with the current total being 2356 for the first half of the year.

Haven't decided whether to head out to camp this afternoon or wait until later in the week to finish up the campsite that is overgrown...  I certainly have enough things here to get done and since it is precipitation with thunderboomers predicted for this afternoon......

The lady next door called this morning with an apology for the damage done by the little kids in my garden....  She didn't find out about it until last night night when her husband told her.  He didn't want to spoil her one every three years party with friends...  She had brought over  a quarter of a home made strawberry rhubarb pie and some rolls for for me and left them on a chair on my porch.  She also told me her husband said I was great talking to the kids about responsibility and respecting other peoples property...  Believe me I had to fight back the urge to give them a good whack!!!

Well, I can see the handwriting on the wall, so I best get busy if I am to start catching up on some things.... Galaxy, I somehow thought you were born over the "Valley" to the West of where you now live.  I guess you grew up there?

Later!

I believe I've found why I'm feeling so bad lately. Many of the meds I take have a long list of side effects. Not only that, many have most of the SAME side effects and different meds can have different side effects hit at the same time. Seems the effects I'm having problems with right now are light headedness, dizziness, confusion, muscle pain, cramps, weakness, drowsiness, memory problems, trouble concentrating, aggressive and even hostile behavior. And that's not even getting into the real serious side effects. Well, it's nice to know there's nothing real serious wrong with me, just the result of a bunch of side effects hitting at once.

JEFFREY: yes, side effects can be hell on the body. of course, my temper and agressive comes form Bipolar and comes from "red hair and a temper to match" though my hair is now going mousy brown-gray and the red bead has long given up and gone gray! THEY don't make a Red men's hair and beard dye.

My hips {both} and left knee are telling me i did too much walking Sat. at the Scottish Festival!

Ah well, i have had  largely a day of rest. NEEDED it.

CAn't Wait till the kilt's here...they make women's "skilts" too which I don't think is fair...first they get to wear pants and now a version of our kilts??? They wnat everything we have! TSK TSK.

RAIN ALL DAY, we MAY be facing flooding again!

Well, well

RAIN RAIN RAIN RAIN RAIN RAIN RAIN RAIN RAIN RAIN RAIN RAIN RAIN RAIN RAIN

GET The picture??

IFF'EN you'all don't hear form me for a couple of days..that is probably due to flooding!

WE don't' flood, bu the electric substation DOES. and it takes about 5 days to unflood and dry out!

THe gas genrator THe {5600 watt kind} doesn't have surge suppressors for electronic items so we don't run TV or computer on it.

Flash flooding is happening and with 7 days PAST of rain, and 7 days FUTURE of rain, it will FLOOD again!

So IFF'EN you'all don't hear,, you'all'll know why!

Grilled steaks for supper and drinking coffee now.

HAPPY CANADA DAY to our Diners to the north.

Ran errands today and vacuumed the house. I also started rearranging all my smaller train parts and pieces into a multi drawer holder I bought this weekend. Tomorrow I'm going to put labels on the drawers.

I bought another old Apple IIe computer today to use as a parts source for some of the harder to come by parts. Even if the processor doesn't work it's still worth the $50 (free shipping) I shelled out for it for parts like the keyboard, top cover, knockout tabs and memory chips. FedEx is saying July 5th for delivery. I talked to my nephew about getting my van moved out here even if it can't be fixed right away. I don't like leaving it in town. He'll get a couple of friends to help him move it. Talked with the doc and he says it's definitely the drug side effects that are messing me up. Changing the time I take some of them was suggested. I'll try that and see what happens. No layout work today. The way I was feeling today I didn't even want to look at it. Time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, just a refill on my decaf please....

Jeffrey, I hope you get feeling better ASAP!

I didn't go out to camp today...  just as well, it would have been a waste of time and gasoline.  Had a good steady rain most all day.  I did run a few errands needing to get done.  Stopped at the vets to pick up more pill pockets for Blackie and some flea meds for both cats.  Even though they are indoor kitties, they had a bout with fleas last summer so I figured I would keep them free of the things this year.  Then went to the Value Store (Hardware) and bought a new garden rake (My son Matt broke the 40 year old one when he was here...) and finally drove downtown to the hearing place and got more batteries and the little wax screens that keep clogging up on me.  Of course all that was using EV mode on the PiP.  Getting 79 mpg on this tank.  I should be able to get it back up in the low 80s before I need to fill up the fossil fuel bin on her later this week.

Even did a few odds and ends down cellar in the train room while I was washing clothes today.  I got the ceiling and the valence back up where I had to remove it when we ran the new wire for the thermostat on the new furnace.  Only took me 3 months to get that done....

Hope you all have a safe and good night!  Prayers for all in harm's way...

Don't le the 'green eyed monster' get to you!

Meaning:

Jealousy

The simple origin:

We all know it as jealousy.  But how? It goes back to the Shakespearean play, "Othello" in Act III.  Shakespeare used at cat's green eyes to represent jealousy and referred to it as "the green-eyed monster" in his play.  The phrase 'just caught on'

The whole story:

Green is a color associated with sickness, possibly because people's skin sometimes takes on a slightly yellow/green tinge when they are seriously ill. Green is also the color of many unripe foods that cause stomach pains.

The phrase was used by, and possibly coined by, Shakespeare to denote jealousy, in The Merchant of Venice, 1596:

Portia: How all the other passions fleet to air, As doubtful thoughts, and rash-embraced despair, And shuddering fear, and green-eyed jealousy! O love, Be moderate; allay thy ecstasy, In measure rein thy joy; scant this excess. I feel too much thy blessing: make it less, For fear I surfeit.

In Othello, 1604, Shakespeare also alludes to cats as green-eyed monsters in the way that they play with mice before killing them.

Iago: O, beware, my lord, of jealousy; It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock The meat it feeds on; that cuckold lives in bliss Who, certain of his fate, loves not his wronger; But, O, what damned minutes tells he o'er Who dotes, yet doubts, suspects, yet strongly loves!

Jealousy, do not lift thine ugly head!!

Good morning, or perhaps it's "marginally acceptable" morning?  75 degrees on the way to work before oh seven hundred, light showers and high humidity.  Yuck.

Jeffrey, I know how you feel about side effects of meds.  I only take a couple of them, for cholesterol and high blood pressure, but I had to work with the doctor and I'm now on my third BP med.  The first made me cough, and the second just made me very tired.  (Those who have dealt with this know the side effects of Lisinopril and Atenolol or other beta-blockers.)  I'm on Losartan for BP now, and it seems to be a better match for me.  But, I've found from talking with others that YOU have to be proactive about these things.  Don't tolerate side effects.

The 1995 production of "Othello," with Laurence Fishburn and Kenneth Branagh, did a great job of portraying the evil of Iago.  Parts of Venice haven't changed much since the 17th century, and the on-location shots add to the atmosphere of this dark and sexy drama.  It's one to keep in mind when you're looking for a movie and don't want another car chase flick with zombies and red-eyed monsters.

And speaking of European scenes, the Tour de France is on for the next 3 weeks.  This year, they raced on the island of Corsica for the first time.  The scenery is breathtaking, and the video uses it to maximum effect, with helicopters hovering overhead and sweeping through valleys to provide shots of old ruined fortresses, then coming over a ridge to look down on a narrow, winding road with almost 200 cyclists in a pack.  I'd suggest recording the live broadcast in the morning and then watching it at night with a finger on the fast-forward button.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and a couple scrambled eggs, bacon, hash browns and toast with apple jelly please. Thanks.

A chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 70.  Chance of precipitation is 60%.

I was remiss in wishing our Canadian friends a Happy Canada Day yesterday so let me do so belatedly today.

Welp, got the call yesterday from my friend who owns the restaurant and subsequently inherited the apartment above; the tenant is out and the countdown to the new renter begins. I have until the 1st of August to get the apartment redone and ready for the new tenant. Stopped in to see what I was up against and get my supply list going and the wife shows up with daughter in tow (she’d never been up there) and then my friend. Hmm Well, actually the all are my friends individually. Especially ... Confusedmy friend, his daughter and the middle son. Kinda hard to tell something about someone without using their names over the net and not get confusing. Anyway, after they debate a few things and she naturally wins, ( I am consulted and as per tradition, say I don't make suggestions...I just do. A trait that is particularly attractive to both her and her daughterYes. No arguments, no back talk, no....,no nothing. They just say what they want I say if I can do that, and it gets done..... Sometime. Fairly soon....kinda. Pretty much. Another trait of mine they find NOT so attractive. Laugh  ) she asks when am I gonna start and I said… “now I suppose. Just need a couple things from home”. She said she’d be back to help. This was like at 3:30 and I got all the carpet and backing in the whole place removed and she carried every bit of it down to the dumpster and I was done with that by like 5:30. Including another brief visitation from the middle sonWhistling. We like to talkEmbarrassed. I cut carpet into manageable strips when I remove it. Generally I’m by myself or even if I have help, it’s a heck of a lot easier to cut the stuff in two foot strips than fight the whole room or even half. Especially when your help is a 5 foot even, on a good day, woman. Takes a little bit longer but ask anybody who's tried to wrangle a big ole piece of carpet around and down a flight of stairs and they'll say....cut that baby uuuuup!Laugh

Anyway, full w**k day today. Have a few bills to pay then off to ….. actually the same building just upstairs for a bit….., downstairs for a bit. Then upstairs for a bit…., then downstairs for a bit. Kinda like a yoyo.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

I'm a small town boy. A product of two people from even smaller towns. I don’t talk on topic….. I just talk. Laugh
