Evenin' folks!

Janie, just a cup of decaf for me right.  Thank you Ma'am!

Fun Day even with the cold and some liquid sunshine out there.  I had a great time at the museum with the Antique Car folks.  First thing as I started a tour, I asked what they drove out to the NYMT (Our partner museum where they start the tour).  One lady whose husband was already climbing into the cab of our GE 80 Tonner turned to me, grinned from ear to ear, and produced a pile of photos from her purse.  I think I asked the magic question!  After many photos of 1920's and 30's autos they own the last one was a 1957 Chevy.  I was admiring that and she said we decided with the weather the 57 Chevy would be the best choice for today!

They had a lot of interest and a lot of good questions most of which I was able to answer.

When I got home the house was up to 68°F inside...  Tonight would have been a great time to bake something, but supper was left over Chinese Chicken and melon (Zucchini) I made last night.  Went down to the train room with my camera, poured another wall for the Octagon Blacksmith's shop and then got a few photos of the Jordan Miniatures Packard Truck I have been little by little getting done.  I did turn on the heater down there only to find the pilot light was out.  Didn't want to light from the old sparker in it, so I light a propane torch I have down there so I could get flame into the hole and hold the pilot switch on while the thermocouple heated up at the same time (they are on opposite sides of the heater....).  That way I could get it lit without calling someone over to the house as it is a two man job otherwise when the sparker doesn't work.  It did fire right up after I got the pilot lit.

More in WPF...

While I have a bunch of pressing deadlines coming up, I think I'll be getting more time for the Model Railroading this month.  have to as the most pressing project is a model!!!

Jeffrey, enjoying your new toys I see.  Looking good!

Have a great night!  Prayers for all in need.

Good evening.

Karl ... I recall "Tootle" being a favorite when I was very young, too.

Ray .... I like the truck and the scene very much!

Jeff .... Your getting a lot done at Sundown Shops.

Sue ... Glad to see you.

Galaxy .... Sounds like a fun event with the kilts.

Bear ...... Now that is a cute photo.

Tom in PA... Those are good photos. I still think NS should have selected colors from its heritage railroads other than PC's black of course. I can imagine the NS horse on a Southern green unit. That would be something.

On the layout, I did some more track laying today.

morning coffee in the diner...

GOOD SUNDAY MORNING!!!

Today is Sunday, September 8th, 2013!!!

MAKE IT A GREAT DAY!!

Today's Fun limericks:

A lady and her man Quinn,

Skated out where the ice was quite thin,

Had a quarrel, no doubt,

For I hear they fell out;

What a blessing they didn't fall in!

And now, for the perils of today's fast moving tech:

At a lab a technician named Sloan

pricked his finger while on the phone

 a mistake he'd regret

 when years later he met

his own illegitimate clone!

A few olde tyme wordds:

'Xesturgy' - To polish, as with stones {also, such as: a rough piece of stone being polished by water on a river bed }

'Notarikon' -  (Gr. νοταρικόν; Lat. notaricum, from notarius, "shorthand-writer"), When you take a word and create a new word from either the letters from the beginning of that original word or the letters from the end of that original word.  I've seen this in on-line games.  For example:  You take the word "Example" and using the first two letters "EX" you then create = Extra.  You take the last two letters LE and create = Letter.  Both the words Extra and Letter are notarikons

'Chiliad' -  (k l - d , - d)Consisting of a thousand of something, a thousand years, a thousand days, a thousand balls, etc.

MAKE IT A GREAT DAY!!

Good morning. It's 68° with 100% humidity. The high will be 95° but it will feel like 103°.

Well so far this morning I've drilled out the portholes on the Burlington F3. This one is plastic so it was a snap. For those who are interested I use a 7/32 bit. Right now I have no plans for the day.

Good morning, Chloe.  I will have coffee and a waffle, please.

MrB,  Sounds like a fun time with your daughter.  Enjoy it while you can.

Ray,  Looks like you had fun building the fence.Thumbs Up

Garry,  Track laying?  Are you expanding your layout?  I have been away too long and missed the up date.

My current project is building a tunnel portal/avalanche shed.  I am using wood.  When I get the substructure together, I will put in hard shell.  Then I can work on the log landing.   I have been working in spurts.  I started painting watercolor.  Too many hobbies, not enough time.

Off for a bike ride.

Good morning.

Jeff .... F3's are looking good.

Sue ....  I have been slowly building the layout one section at a time. Currently, I have just started the final section of my planned layout. This new section will encompass an area of about 6' by 9'. The last section of my layout to be completed is the CIty of Heartland. It still needs more work. In particular, I would like to install overhead trolley wires for the street car line.

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and The Sunday Breakfast buffet please. Yes I know what time it is. OK make it the Brunch buffet. Thanks.

Welp, it’s over for another year. I think it went ok. The festival that is. Now to start planning for next year if she chairs’ it again. She may not but then again she has said that every year. Too many um….., kinks get tossed in at the last minute by some people who…well, let’s just say they don’t think things through when taking it upon themselves to change a 6 month plan because of who they are and things get screwed up and takes jumping through hoops to get it straight again. Yah. That’s about as nice as I can put it. Any other way would get me thrown out of here.

Today I hope to just relax and maybe go out to eat. Chinese? Oh I don’t know. Still thinkin Outback, but it has been a few days since I’ve been in there. Place just doesn’t hold the same feel without the familiar waitresses. Maybe I'll go on a quest to find them! I know two would probably be glad, the others'll probably be thinking "hm nice to see you again, but think it weird. Maybe psycho stalker man." Nah, I'll probably just stay home.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, can I get a refill on my coffee, please?  Thank you, Ma'am.

Crisp Fall like day here in the Finger Lakes this morning.  Currently 61°F outside but with a bit of abundant sunshine so far.  Nice day!

I'm going to spend some time getting a handle on how to build the octagon blacksmiths shop today.  Have made a promise to get it done this month so it is thee priority for the moment.  Still have to pour one more side and start to figure out how to cut the openings fro the doors and windows into the plaster without breaking the plaster....  I'm thinking I can build a jig to hold the side and use a diamond bit in the dremel.

Sue, the fences were done last spring.  I was looking for the look of an old farm that replaced fencing as needed and continued to use what was there as long as they could.  hence the remains of the stone fence, and the split rail fence in the back.  The fence by the road would be the most modern....  I don't know if it works all that good, but.....  My sister says the cow looks like it is falling over the fence.  She also says it is the wrong color!  We raised Guernseys on the farm... Whistling

Later!

Morning, or Afternoon, All, it depends on what  time zone you are in,

Currently it is 63 with an expected high of 89, under sunny skies. the winds have shifted, and most of the smoke has left the area.

Second cataract surgery went well, and both eyes seem to be healing well. Putting in the eye drops seems to be very important for the healing process.

Still no layout w**k but I would imagine in a week or two I shall get back to it.

   Rob - Sorry about Bucky

Sue - Good to see you back

I too, remember Tootle, a Little Golden Book.It was one of my favorite books as a little guy.

    Prayers to all in need.

Jeff .... F3's are looking good.

Thanks. I like those scenes of yours. Looks better than my layout did. I tore most of it down before I went to have my lower leg removed. Hopefully I'll be able to start on it again before Christmas. My plan is to rebuild the extension where one of my computers is now. I've done about all I'm going to do with those for the time being. The extension always had some track work issues I was unhappy with. So I can rebuild it from the tabletop up and this time make sure the track is level. It didn't have any problems that caused derailments except for one of the spurs. Anything that was there was put there by hand anyway so it really didn't matter. But it certainly demonstrated the reasons to avoid placing a turnout right after a sharp curve. After that I always put at least one straight section between a curve and a turnout unless it absolutely couldn't be avoided. Sometimes there's no room for a straight section. I also had track sections that were bowed. These would cause the ends of the cars to rise and fall as the train went over them. I'll be avoiding those as well.

For those wondering how well an Athearn drive lends itself to fitting into a metal Varney F3 body it's almost a drop-in installation whether it's an A or B unit. No weight needs to be added as it already has all the weight you'll ever need. On the Athearn chassis the tabs on the sides of the fuel tank need to be removed. So do the ears at the bottom edge of the frame above each truck. I just grab these with a pair of pliers and twist them off. The tabs because they'll be in the way when you go to put the body on and the ears because they're right where the ladders will be. With the removal of these parts the chassis can be easily pressed into the F3 body. The lip that goes around the inside of the shell will keep the frame from falling in when the bottom of the frame is almost flush with the bottom edge of the shell. When the frame is in and seated it looks like it's always been there. If your A unit shell doesn't have an opening in the pilot for the coupler and you want one there you're going to have to make the opening yourself or find a shell that already has one. Due to the Varney body being a little longer than the Athearn F7 body you may wish to use a longer shank coupler on the front. There's plenty of room in the body for a motor decoder and who knows, you may be able to squeeze a sound decoder and speaker in there. I've never tried but it looks like there may be room. I have four of these brutes, this one is the only one on an Athearn frame. The others are  on Athearn clone frames (Stewart, Proto, etc) and have home built drives, They run very well. All three of those are DCC. I intend to build more of these in the future. In fact, #5 is in the works now. I have the chassis and the body is on it's way. Here are a few photos for reference:

Howdy .

It was "Crock Pot Sunday" at church, and we had much to eat after 11:00 am service was out. Great food.

Todd .... I would pick Outback over Chinese any day.

Jeff ... I know what you mean about the Varney shells being longer than Athearn. Varney shells are too long for the rivet counters, but nobody else would care. I have one Varney plastic F3 shell riding on a dummy Athearn chassis. It is an early F3 which looks like an F2, and mine is lettered for an F2. How do you like the detail on the rear doors? LOL

Ray ..... I'm excited! ... Glad to hear you will be working on the blacksmith building in the next few weeks. Based on your other models, you will have another great looking building soon.

Paul ...... I'm happy your eye surgery went well.

Cheers, everybody!

Evening all,

Yesterday I mentioned we were going to see "The Lion King" today. And we did. I don't know how to describe it, so just let me say it was an outstanding production. Everything connected to this show was simply fantastic, from the costumes, to the set design, to the music, and finally to the talent of all those singers and dancers. Those in the leading roles all had beautiful voices with incredible range. I for one could have sat and listened to them all day. If you have a chance to see this play, don't pass it up.

And we did go to a restaurant we like and had our pot roast and garlic mashed potatoes. This restaurant also has a very good salad, but we passed on it. The last couple of times we ate there, I ordered the salad and then had trouble finishing the meal. You couldn't tell it from the size of my belly, but I can't eat as much as I use to. Too bad, because I do enjoy a good meal.

Northing planned for this evening except to watch the season premier of "Boardwalk Empire" on HBO. Tomorrow is grocery shopping and errand day, and it looks like the wife has quite an agenda lined up. But that's okay, because I know better than to plan anything for Mondays. Take care and stay safe...

Evening guys,

I have had nothing but a lazy do nothing day. I watched the F1 race this morning and then did the housework. I then had a afternoon of watching football and am currently watching the packers and 49ers game. Im also going to watch the NY vs Dallas game later too, lol. I might try to do a little railroad work while listening to it.

Mine are phase I F3's, identical in appearance to the F2. They're all rebuilds, Varney metal bodies on Athearn or Athearn clone frames with home-built drives that aren't interchangeable, with the exception of this latest one. The drive is all Athearn blue box and #5 will be also. I have several plastic ones, one on a working Varney drive, the others have junk box drives. And you're right, I get a laugh out of that rear door detail! Maybe someday I'll put decals of doors on them and add some Walthers rubber diaphragms just for kicks. Of the metal ones I have two A's and three B's. #5 will be the third A. My father asked me why I'm going to the trouble of building them. My answer was because I like them and because I can.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a short stack of buttermilk pancakes with real NYS maple syrup, a side order of bacon, and lots of dark roast coffee to warm me up and start the day.

Today is a nice Fall like day here in the Finger Lakes Region. It's a crispy 57°F at the moment with a high of 75°F later this afternoon about the same time as the rain clouds replace the bright morning sunshine we are having at the moment.  Tomorrow it will be 90° outside....

As always I have a full day of stuff to do today including grocery shopping, making some copies of the blueprint for the blacksmith shop, mowing the lawn, w*rking on the reunion booklet, and a bunch of other stuff.

Guess I better get off line and to w*rk!

Later!

Morning All,

Currently it is 66 with an expected high of 88 under sunny skies.I think I will keep the windows open all day and air the place out.

Back to w**k today for me. May be difficult after 5 days off and nothing to do but rest after cataract surgery. Although I did do a little grocery shopping yesterday.

A bit bummed that my NY Giants lost to the Cowboys, not so much that they lost, just that they played lousy.

Good afternoon. It's 87° with 45% humidity. The high will be 95° but will feel like 100°.

Getting a late start today. I've been up since 6am but personal business and life have constantly been in the way. One thing was I was trying to set up a ride to and from an appointment Thursday afternoon through my insurance carrier but all the little details they wanted were things I just didn't have. In the end my personal care-giver and my step mother stepped forward and said they have that sorted out. The fifth (or is it the sixth?) metal Varney F3 will get here sometime from the 10th to the 12th (Tuesday-Thursday) and I'll be able to start working on it. I'd like to put horns and Kadee couplers on these but I don't have them. So I'll just have to proceed without them. Maybe I can get them next month. MAYBE. My fun money is pretty much shot for a while. In other news, the adventures of a mouse in the kitchen have come to an end. Last week I wedged a piece of buttered popcorn into a trap and set it on the lower shelf of the kitchen cabinet. This morning it had a customer. SNAP!! There's one less mouse in the world.

I did some detail work on the F3 today. I worked on installing some metal handrails on it. Main problem I ran into was I snapped both of my smallest drill bits, 1/32" and 3/64". I had to settle for 1/16", bigger than what I wanted but it was the smallest I had. I only had to drill the top holes so that made it a bit easier. I made the handrails from .020" steel wire. I bent one end 90° and hung it in the hole hen clipped the wire where it mat the bottom of the shell then teased it into place and applied a drop of super glue to the top and let it run down to the bottom where the excess was absorbed by a piece of paper towel. I did this with each handrail (cab and side access doors only) until I had them done. I also addressed the total lack of any detail on what passed for a rear door. You have to look close to see them as they blend in with the Zamac.
