Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, Coffee (dark roast please) and some old phart organic high fiber cereal for me this morning...

Will be spending most of today at my son's house to celebrate Labor Day.  Not sure what he is BBQing up, but my contribution will be potato salad.  I am also taking a load of stones and some topsoil out to fill in a hole left from the removal of a dead pine tree a couple years back.  He just leaves the hole and mows around it....  I'm hoping he will get some time to clean up the dump he lives in when both girls are in school this year.  he will have a few hours in the morning before he has to pick up the little one from pre -k.

I will have some major cleaning going on in the dump I call home this week as a few classmates will be coming over on Friday to start putting together the booklet we are putting out for all that attended the Reunion.

I best get to w*rk!

Later.

Jeff - Since the cars are metal, is that real rust or someone's attempt at weathering?

It's somebody's attempt at weathering. The cars are aluminum with parts that look like Zamac (zinc, aluminum, magnesium and copper), same stuff Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars are made from. Anyway, it doesn't rust. Biggest thing you gotta watch for on it is zinc pest.

Hello gentlemen! welcome to Pacific Northwest!

out here we had a number of major railroads: SP, UP, GN, NP, and SP&S. then the BN, SP, and UP. Then the BNSF and UP.

UP had lines on the south bank of the columbia and used Spokane international trackage(which UP bought) to enter eastern washington. The SP ran down the length of the Oregon coast stopping in Portland Oregon that was as far as they went.

On the north bank of river Was SP&S territory that crossed over the river at one point headed off towards Bend, Ore. and an interchange in California with the WP. The SP&S had track in Astoria and seaside Oregon, before and after the BN merger there would be a freight on the ex Oregon electric line that always had a sleeper adn coach on the end of the train. it was very popular with fishers and hunters who were usually SP&S/BN employees. Moving north from the SP&S would be the NP on both sides of the cascades, The NP ran up the length of the washington coast even out to the ocean. headed north was Seattle, headed east the NP went out to Toppenish and Pasco(SP&S interchange).  Headed even farther north was the Great Northern railroad, the NP's primary rival out here. the NP came over Stampede pass, while the GN came over Stevens pass. The GN served Seattle and Yakima in Eastern Washington. As well as there being major players there are also smaller railroads that help make up the Washington state trackage, I'll talk about them later.

I'll post GN and SP&S film a little later.

This is the SI prior to UP repainting all of their units into Armor yellow and gray.

I did some polishing on the F3 today. It shined up pretty good. It won't be that way long though probably. I think Zamak tarnishes pretty quick.

And i added some vents to the roofs of some the streamliners. They may be right, they may be wrong. I don't care. They look good to me.

Howdy ..

Wow  Jeff the F3 looks real shiney. Ready to haul a Zephyr!  .... Roof vents look great on the cars as does the antenna on the observation. You're doing great work.

Gary BN14 ..... Thanks for sharing the video of the NP Geep cab ride. Very nice!

We just had a nice visit from some Michigan friends who are passing through KY while traveling. We went with them to Germany maybe 20 years ago, and it was a fun trip. Of course, I gave a layout tour to our guests.

September 3rd is a common birthday for my Michigan sister and I. She was born on my 6th birthday, and I sometimes razz my mother for such a dirty trick. Anyhow, tomorrow my MI sister will visit here, and we will share our birthday together.

Cheers, everybody.

Earlier today, owing to the fact that it's a dummy unit, the F3 didn't have a hole in front for a headlight. Nor did it have a vent on the top rear of the cab. Now it has both. The vent is one of the extras from the streamliner cars superglued to the top of the cab. The headlight was a little trickier. Ever drilled a hole through Zamac? Well if you ever did you'd remember doing it. I used a 1/8" bit in my Dremel to do the job. First off the bit wanted to wander all over he place. So I had to hold the loco shell vertical then the cord end of the Dremel under my chin and very slowly and carefully bring the spinning bit down until it just touched the headlight blank on the front of the loco and let it make a small pilot hole in the very center, then I slowly put the pressure to it. Geez, that shell is thick! I pushed the bit through about 3/8th's of an inch before it broke through the other side. I cleared any debris from the hole then put some clear glue in it to act as a lens.

Evening guys

Got the other header on my car. Turns out the starter and motor mount have to come off to put these it, then I have to put that stuff back on... I drove it for about 20 feet with open headers. I like the sound, too bad it's illegal and would wake the neighbors...

Jeff, I'll echo Garry's comment about it hauling a Zephyr. Would a clear coat keep the zarmac from tarnishing?

Garry, Neat vid. A torpedo geep as well.

Todd, That movie struck me as a B-flick just from the title...

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Hi Gang,

Just a short stop tonight.  Helped my Son here in town today with some trim on his new Garage/shop and it was very hot, 31 degrees C.  And for my trouble I don't feel so good tonight.  Hope that to shall pass.

I wanted to drop in to buy RBFs all around to Celebrate GARRY'S BIRTHDAY tomorrow.   Glad you are going to make it a Family Celebration Old Timer, Lol, no not really, it is only a day older  All the best to you.....

Was neat to hear from Sue the other day. I miss her regular stops here.  Also from Ulrich, glad to see he is still looking at some railroad stuff in his scarce moments of free time. Hope all goes well for him over the next three weeks.

Some very nice modeling being done these days, just imagine what fall and winter hold in store for us, modeling that is..

Time to shut it down for the night.   Hope you all had a great week-end.

Johnboy out.......................to ZZZzzzland, I hope.

morning coffee in the diner...

GOOD TUESDAY MORNING!!!

Today is Tuesday, September 3rd, 2013!!!

Back to work, back to school!

MAKE IT A GREAT DAY!!

Today's fun limerick:

There was a young lady from Nantucket,

drawing water from the well in a bucket,

she saw a sunflower

at that very hour

she went and she did pluck it.

Old words:

When with trains, Are you Lethean - A state of oblivion or forgetfulness

Do your trains make you 'Rident'? - Laughing or cheerful

Have you ever be an 'Otacust '?- An eavesdropper; spy.  From Greek meaning "ear" and "listener."

Galimaufrey{n}, Forget beef, Galimaufrey is what's for dinner!: an 18th century term meaning a large helping of a hodgepodge consisting of leftovers, remnants, and/or scraps from the larder...

“The apple of my eye”

Meaning: An object of great affection, usually elevated above all  others Origin: The “apple” of an eye = its aperture = its central point. The  phrase pops up in the Bible (Deuteronomy 32:10: “He found him in a desert land,  and in the waste howling wilderness; he led him about, he instructed him, he  kept him as the apple of his eye”). Its first semi–modern-day use, however, was  by Sir Walter Scott (“Richard was to me as an eldest son, the apple of my eye”).  Photo: Getty Images

Now I shall let out a 'Ziraleet' and go about my day- Any expression of joy.

MAKE YOUR DAY A GREAT DAY!!

Garry!

Good Morning Gang!

The next two days will see some rest for me - my batteries are down and need to be recharged. Wish I could do some MRRing to relax, but no time & money for it. Big sigh!

We are having typical early Fall weather, with the odd drizzle of rain, gusts of wind and temperatures in the lower 10 C. Signs of an early and hard winter in this region...

Have a good one!

Good Morning!!!

Patchy fog before 9am. Otherwise, sunny, with a high near 81.

Coffee and some of Ray’s potato salad (that I still have yet to try and make at home, even though I have the recipe right here guarded on my desk) and…., um…,, I’ll try a bit of that bear roast. A small bit. Last time I had bear it was a little greasy for my taste and…well there was another “taste” in there I wasn’t too keen on. But hey, could have been the processing and that was a long time ago so…., I’ll give it a whirl again.

Happy B-Day Garry!!!  Cake

Karl- Happy 6th Anniversary!!!!! Sorry didn’t see it yesterday. Hope you had a nice one.

Garry- Trainroom needs cleaning for two reasons. One is spider webs. Bad year for spiders this year it seems. Everyone is complaining about them. And two…..,meEmbarrassed. No use in denying it so I’ll admit it. No place to put it…put it here. I don’t want to get rid of this I may need it, but no place to put it….., put it there. And of course…, I’ll just set it here temporarily and I’ll put it up later and of course we are still waiting on laterWhistling. Mom used to call those rooms a "ketch all room" Like I said I did get a trash bag full of stuff out of there. Now that sounds like a lot, but about a month ago I had a trash bag about 3/4 full and put it in the room figuring I would use it to put some stuff in from there cause it had some room. So, sounds a bit better than it was. Oh wait….my how time flies, that wasn’t a month ago I put that bag in there…., that was last Spri....Wint..Confused..er...no, Fall.

ONE problem with trainroom is, it was expanded by allowing me to remove wall from the old storage room WHICH upon construction of said room 15 years ago, it was to be a trainroomYes. But in reality became a storage room for my power tools, paint stuff and other home improvement type tools among some other thingsSad. So, when the wall came down a few years ago, there was really no new home for these things, they just were arranged differently. Now there appears to be more room for the storage room stuff to creep.Sigh

Jeffrey- Has anyone really questioned what comes out of the Sundown Shops?Laugh Hey, if that car need roof vents and the shops had something laying around that would work, like in the real world, that’s what they would use. What could be more prototypical than that. Cars are looking good.

Just Googled “Zinc Pest”. Never heard of it before, and never experienced it. But now you watch. Half of everything I have will start cracking to pieces.

Got a few things accomplished yesterday without getting hung up on the Castle marathon, not the least of which was painting the trim and evening out the yard so the place looks a little more presentable from the road. I need to get rid of the million spider webs at every corner and bush and eve. Looks kinda like the Munsters’ house. I usually don’t mess with them, much to Brenda’s dismay, they do a lot of good. But this year Whoa! Enough is enough. Time to thin the herd.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

 Morning All,

Currently 68 with an expected high of 88, a little less smoke in the air.

Another w**k day for me. Hope I can make it through the whole day.Only put in about 6 1/2 hours yesterday, as my foot really started bothering me after walking around all day.

Daughters topped by the store to bring me some ribs they picked up at the rib cook off. They were delicious.

Happy B-Day Garry and to your sister also.

   Prayers to all in need.

Mornin'....  Opps!  Afternoon folks!

Chloe I'll pay a visit to the Salad Bar for lunch today.  Just bring me a tall glass of lemonade if you would.

67°F and cloudy outside at the moment...  At least I don't need the air conditioner running today.  Have been cleaning up piles of papers sitting on the dinig room table.  Guess what?  The top of the table is wood!  I had forgotten that.

Happy Birthday Garry!

One hundred years ago today my Grandfather Arthur Blodgett H------- stopped over to the house of one of his best friends Henry Fox and handed him a cigar to announce the birth of my Father earlier that day!  Two days later on Sept. 5th. my late wife's grandfather stopped in to see the new child at my Grandfather's house and handed him a cigar announcing the birth of my Father In Law, Bernard Fox,  The rest is history!

Gotta get some stuff done!

Later!

Good afternoon, all.  After a few weeks of really superb weather, we had a warm, wet, steamy Labor Day weekend here in Massachusetts.  Yuck.  That weather just takes it all out of me.  I finally gave in on Monday and revved upt the air conditioners.  It wasn't that hot, but so humid.

SWMBO will be back in a week and a half.  I'm not sure how her parents are going to get along without her, but we're about to find out.  She's already talking about another trip down there before the snow flies, because she doesn't want to do it after the snow flies and miss any time during ski season.  We've got our Sunday River passes already, and we've booked our airfare to Whistler in January.

Belt tightening in progress.  I wish I could say it was for my waistline, but I've neither gained nor lost a pound in 5 weeks.  Again, I'm looking forward to ski season, which is when I lost some weight earlier in the year.  But, the belt tightening is at work this time.  We just got an e-mail about the training budget being cut, asking us to take training "on our own time."  Ha, like anyone will do that.  Unfortunately, this sort of thing just feeds the rumor mill, which is now looking more and more like layoffs will happen sometime early next year.  As for me, well, I've actually volunteered.  I'm thinking of retirement anyway, and it will either be a complete break next summer, or maybe dropping back to 3 days a week.  With the years-of-service package they've offered in the past, a layoff-to-retirement plan is pretty attractive.  It's like a half-year off with pay and benefits.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

Howdy .... Thanks for the happy birthday messages. .... It was really something growing up and sharing a birthday with a younger sister every year.  It meant we each only had half of a birthday cake, and we had to agree on what kind of cake to request. .The hard part was blowing out the candles.

There is plenty of cake and ice cream here in the DIner, however. So chow down on it!

Afternoon guys

There are T-boomers rolling about here. So I hope the power stays on.

I took my car to a friend's exhaust shop this morning to get a mid-pipe put on after I stuck the longtube headers on. I kinda liked driving with open headers, lol. Although on the way there I had to really mash the brake pedal to get it to stop. My father dropped me off and suggested I look at the vacuum lines as the new intake manifold has a different routing that the breadbox one I was using. Sure enough, the vacuum tube was routed wrong. Fixed it and brakes fine now. The car is a bit quieter with the new exhaust...

I have an appointment in about an hour. Then I'll go to the train club. Hopefully the guys who wanted me to weather some Kadee Hoppers for them will remember to bring them. They're bringing me a total of 7, and at $15 bucks a piece (their starting offer, I wasn't expecting it to be that high so I jumped on it); I make some decent money. enough to get the book I need for college or maybe get my new tires mounted.

Garry, Happy Birthday

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

I got the two Athearn powered F7 drives today and a dummy F7 frame with the old style trucks with metal side frames that were used in the 70's. I used that frame to determine what I'd have to lop off of a modern Athearn frame to make it fit in the Varney F3 shell. I already had a pretty fair idea. So I had to remove the two tabs on the sides that would clip into an Athearn F7 body as the Varney F3 doesn't has the slots for them. I also had to remove the four small ears that keep the Ahearn body level on the frame. On the Varney these hit right on the ladders and therefore they had to go. Next remove the front coupler as the Varney doesn't have an opening for it. After doing those three simple things the frame was an easy press fit into the F3 body. I repeated that process on an Athearn standard blue box F7 chassis and the Varney now has a powered drive in it. I also have an Athearn blue box F7 superpower drive that will be going into a Varney F3 plastic body I'll be getting later this week, probably Friday.

Anyhow, here's the metal F3 body on the Athearn dummy frame. This is much how it'll look on the Frankenstein frame after I get back into my trailer.

Got an underside shot:

And this shot just seems wrong on so many counts!:Laugh
