Good morning. It's 29° with 98% humidity. It'll be sunny with a high of 58°.

Nothing on the schedule today except working on the layout a bit and watching some movies I recorded.

Had dinner with my father last night. A simple meal of chili and rice.

Vans battery seems to do OK when I leave the battery disconnected during long periods of non-use. That indicates there's something in wiring that's draining the battery or there could be a problem with the alternators diodes perhaps. I'll have to have it checked when I can.

Sir Madog
Well, it´s now 20 minutes past the time the official timer showed for the world´s end and I am still around... Was it just another hype, just like the millennium change?

Indeed. I'm still here. The sun is rising in the east. Everything is progressing normally.

Yeah, I well remember that Y2K crap. Even so I took a simple precaution on that one. I went into MSDOS at base program level and reset the system date to 1972. The year 2000 and 1972 were day for day identical. Both were leap years, Christmas and New Years both fell on Saturday. It was a simple fix.

Morning Coffee on Friday, December 21st, 2012!

GOOD MORNING!!!

Today the world ends!!!

SO- to the "ends of the earth"...

Meaning:

The furthest reaches of the land.

Origin:

The phrase 'the ends of the earth' derives from the Bible, Zechariah 9:10 (King James Version):

And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem, and the battle bow shall be cut off: and he shall speak peace unto the heathen: and his dominion shall be from sea even to sea, and from the river even to the ends of the earth.

Caxton used the expreession in his 1483     translation of  J. de Voragine's Golden Legende:

And all the endes of the erthe shal worshipe the Nacions shal come to the fro ferre and bryngyng yeftes shal worshype in the our lord.

In that passage, and in other  religious usages, the phrase was used to indicate the furthest reach of man's dominion, as opposed to the heavens. It wasn't widely used untilk the 19th century, when it began to be used as we use it today, i.e. to mean 'a very long way away'.

Subject: HOLIDAY SAFETY WARNING:

HOLIDAY SAFETY WARNING

I would like to share a personal experience with all of you about drinking and driving.

As you well know, some of us have been known to have had brushes with the authorities on our way home from an occasional social session over the years.

A couple of nights ago, I was out for an evening with friends and had a couple of cocktails and some rather nice red wine.

Knowing full well I may have been slightly over the limit, I did something I've never done before ~ I took a cab home. Sure enough, I passed a police road block but, since it was a cab, they waved it past.

I arrived home safely without incident, which was a real surprise; as I have never driven a cab before and am not sure where I got it or what to do with it now that it's in my garage.

The prayer candles will be lit today until I go to the dentist Angel

Do a good deed towards someone today!

Make it a SPECIAL Day!!!

Good Morning Gang!

Thought I´d better drop in before the world ends - just a couple of hours to go!

I am all set to drive into town to get some supplies I need to continue on the assembly of that kit. It´s just glue, solder and primer. See what I can achieve today...

Have a good one!

Sir Madog

Good Evening!

Janie, a mug of dark roast, please - I am exhausted!

Spent nearly 5 hours on the assembly of the loco body. This is my first etched metal kit, so I am sure I didn´t do things like a pro would have done. Burnt and cut my fingers a number of times in trying to bent and shape the pieces. I used a regular, but adjustable soldering iron and a micro torch to do the soldering. The micro torch worked the best, but it is a heck of a dangerous tool Whistling

Just a few pictures of today´s achievement:

The assembly took a heavy toll on my patience this time. Without the help of my friend Lothar I would have been lost Crying

In spite of being O scale, this loco is not bigger than a small HO scale loco. Some of those parts are so tiny ! The body still needs a lot of filling and cleaning, but I am quite proud of today´s work.

Heading to the sofa for a rest now. More to come!

Edit: In case you are wondering what that black thing beneath the loco body is - it is not the chassis, it´s a memory stick.

That really looks nice looking!!!Stick out tongueStick out tongueBowBow

Went to see the doc today about the results of my cardiac stress test. Everything's good. Hearts in good shape, cholesterol is under 90.

Things were a real mess this morning. Trees and power lines down everywhere. The fire depts really had their hands full helping to clear trees off the roads and off the lines. I'm kinda glad I retired. I'd have a hard time doing that kind of work anymore. Hope we don't see another storm like that soon. Looks like a cold one tonight. Low of 30°F with an average 10 mph northwest wind coming off the lake. I wouldn't want to have to be outside tonight. That cold stuff is for the kids.

Time to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Evening gang! Cowboy

Ray, Todd and other animal lovers, lil Tinker spent most of the day dozing in a recliner. The vet just extended her medication for another 7 days, saying that some cats don't clear up in the initial 10 days. If she's not clear in a week then we have to go back for X-rays and other tests. Lets hope this works! It's funny, but she was doing better, then 2 days ago the wife switched litter. We went from Tidy Cat to Arm & Hammer Ultra. Its real perfumy  and the vet said that may also be an irritant. So we dumped the litter pans and switch back to the old litter. Now I have 5 pounds of really smelly stuff to soak up oil spills in the garage!Big Smile

LHS visit today, had to get a set of decals to finish the 2nd caboose for the grandkids. I'll finish that tomorrow. That is AFTER I go to a meeting on the other side of Baltimore tomorrow AM. Looks like I might be leaving the car biz, with its 65 hour work weeks to land a job whose hours a 7 til 4, 5 days a week.  Ken, I'm sure you can relate! Especially when the starting pay is equal to what I'm making now!Big Smile Keepin my fingers crossed!Wink

Jim, I like the eggnog, its really the only time of year I ever drink anyway. My eyes felt fine this morning!Mischief

Gotta get back to the decaling projects (BL2's and cabeese). And prepare for the invasion of the Grandsons Saturday, their parents and their 4 Uncles!

Cya!

Good Evening, Chloe - yes, it's me! Yep, has been quite a while ('nuther very long story there, involving too many pots 'n' pans to tend to...). I'll have a mug of hot chocolate, please. Thank you!

Gee, all we need for all the long-missing Diners to show up, appears to be for me to be gone a bit. I see Fergie's been back, Robby P. is back (Mr.-Famous-in-MR)WinkThumbs Up, and Dave L. is back again(and probably some more, once I wade through just the past handful of pages of posts)... I'd still be reading posts when the Diner gets moved, if I tried to read the 30 or so pages I've missed. Wow

Okay, Fergie, you got me curious - what's a Swede saw?Huh? Best wishes on the remodeling job for the MESS (tm)

Todd, I hear you about the Christmas shopping 'fun'. I did get a list from my daughter for everyone in their family. Hers and Andy's are easy - gift certificates, etc. The grandsons' lists? Oh yeah... After looking for a 'traditional' Batman figure for #1 grandson (and getting one of the newer/movie-based ones by mistake), found that online and ordered that, plus some wooden play stuff for #2 grandson, got them ordered. Then I get an email confirming my order, which tells me the projected delivery date is "between Jan. 2 - 5th"???Indifferent Bang Head I had gone and paid for shipping instead of the 'free' shipping (because the alleged delivery time sounded too long on the free shipping. Still not sure if it'll get in in time, so I'll have to print out a picture of the items to put in a card to show them what they will be getting (whenever...). But other than that - and the wrapping (ahem, cough...), I'm pretty much done. (Brother & I exchange the for-us 'traditional' Amazon gift certificates in matching amounts). Whistling

Ken, sorry to hear of your (ongoing) hassles w/BofS. I'd wish for them to go belly-up, but then you'd get somebody who would buy them out, and never knew you had been trying to stay up on your payments (they would only know whatever fabrication that BofS put down about X number of payments missed). Mutter, mutter... bankers! (No offense if any Diners have family members who w**k for a bank (unless that family member isn't your favorite relative anyway...Smile, Wink & Grin). But I hope you get that house - cute one! - and, it comes with some possible MRR space.AngelAngel Hey, what are all those plaques on the back wall in your layout photos? (I'm sure they're not from BofS, of course...)

Jeff, I'm glad you post the steps when you are troubleshooting something with your vehicle(s). That's one way I get a (little) bit of learnin' about automotive stuff. Thanks! Thumbs Up (Really like the photos from your layout, too)

Lee, you were a pretty busy beaver over your long weekend! If I could afford you, I should hire you to assemble some of my tougher rolling stock kits...Whistling Looking forward to seeing your progress photos. Yeah

Talking about gas makes me feel better - we're at $2.969 a gallon here (and they'll give you a nickel a gallon discount for cash!). Smile (I just hope I don't start a stampede of Diners for Cape G....)

Dennis (Blank)  - Taco Bell? Oh... groooaaannnn.... Wink  (But Garry probably liked that one!)

Karl, I'm not sure if the "eggnog" helps your eyes or not. Smile, Wink & Grin

Ray - 30 MILLION dollars of Maple syrup?Wow Wonder how long it took (and how big of a truck) to pull off that heist? Man! That probably ruined a bunch of people's breakfast plans, I'd guess. Hey, until I was looking at that article, I never knew there was a "global strategic maple syrup reserve". (Wonder how many countries' currency is maple syrup-based?) Whistling

Ulrich, on that micro-torch, maybe Fergie could give you some tips from his soldering experiences on what to watch out for... Oops Sounds like you will be getting a "white Christmas" there. Here, it looks like much of the Northern Midwestern states (aka the High Plains) will be having that white stuff on the ground. As for your loco progress, that looks pretty good so far (but then again, I am soooo not an expert on brass locos of any kind...)

Rob, good to hear from you. And good to hear that you'll be able to see (and maybe run) some trains with moving some to the living room. Thumbs Up How're the critters doing?

Not much new on my MRR'ing. I'm needing to hunt down a second Walthers ('old') Roundhouse kit, I think. Couldn't find any mention of add-on stalls or such on Walthers' site (even in discontinued items search), so I'll see where I can find one of those 933-3041's.

Met the gal in St. Louis last weekend. Not sure at this point, got some (internal) questions whether she might be too 'citified' and unlikely to want to move to the hinterlands of Cape.

See you all tomorrow or over the weekend, unless the Mayans were right (yeah, sure...). Smile, Wink & Grin

Prayers continue for those in need (comfort, healing, new home) - whether four-legged or two-legged.

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape G.

Good Evening All,

Life these days is still pretty depressing but we carry on.

Ken - good ulck with BOS though I think all this talk of help is more hype than fact.

Curt - I get the 22 ga wire from RS in stranded so it bends more easily. It also carries more anps than similarly sized solid.

Nothing going on except doing drops and buss joins. Work is work as I finish the long building Cooper Monaco and get ready for the trip to Auckland next month. Catch y'all later, J.R.

Karl- How is Tinkerbell doing?

Ulrich- Thats looking pretty awesome.

Rob- Good to hear from you. Hope you have a Merry Christmas and a great 2013.

 Evening Folks

Flo, Beer Pleases and one for Ceder Strand! We have both Rob's back! Cool

Bank Of Stupid War SoapBox Had the confrere call with my Green Path Rep Katie and my BoS Rep Lashenia Lowery was not available so we got some other Meat Head. Reason I was turned down for the loan modification was not because of my credit score (hum, letter said it was) but because I did not send in all the need financial information they requested! Bang Head Namely Sues SSI reward letter?

I scanned everything I sent in and have it stored on the computer. I opened up the file and read the letter to the BoS Meat Head and she said, Oh, we have thatBang Head So, this coming Thursday I have another confreres call with my BoS Rep Lashenia Lowery to have her file my appeal on the denial of the loan modification.

Way I look at it, the longer I can drag this out, the more money I will have to move on!

 See you all later!

 Ken

Afternoon folks!

Chloe, a hot cup of cocoa would hit the spot right now.

Been doing a lot of odds and ends today.  Had to run downtown to pick up some bows for the packages I haven't even started to wrap, got my allergy shot (that I missed last week...), Mailed out the Lakeshores Limited to the people in the Division who either don't have email or won't trust us with their address, stopped at the bank to pick up a few $$$ cash for the weekend, and then came back home and stacked a few more wheelbarrow loads of firewood on the back porch.  Looks like the woodpile may get buried by a few inches of light and fluffy over the next couple of days...  Every year I promise myself i will get it all moved and stacked before we get the white stuff, and once again less than half of it has been moved.

Supposed to get heavy rain and high winds this evening from the storm moving East.  I was going to go to Rochester for the monthly museum meeting and program but think I will just stay here close to the wood stove instead.  The thought of driving the NYS thruway next to semis (especially the double trailer ones) in driving rain and 50mph gust of winds don't appeal to me anymore, I guess.  Think I'll start wrapping some of the presents tonight instead.

Karl, how's the kitty doing...  What you have been descibing sounds a bit like Feline Urinary Tract Syndrome.  Basically kindey stones they have trouible passing.  Boy kitties are the ones that get it most often because they have more trouble getting the stones through their system.  Manét almost died twice with it before we got him on a diet that didn't produce the stones...  The first diet didn't help and they came back.  Poor guy was in horrible pain with them....  Hope Tinkerbell gets better soon!

Those of you in the blizzard conditions in the mid west, stay safe out there tonight!

CoffeeCoffee in a SOGGY SOUTHERN mug, please.

Hope everyone is doing well these days.

Have had a rough second half ot the year health-wise. Did manage to put up a Christmas tree though. Will be moving some of my trains up from the Train Room into the living room, where I will see and enjoy them daily. Oh, finally finished the wood stove so there is extra heat in the house. Still have not managed any train room time, other than to show friends the unfinished layouts. Eventually!

MERRY CHRISTMAS, Happy Hanukkah, and Happy Holidays to you all.

Little Tinkerbell was on the last day of antibiotics for a bladder infection, and she started again with blood in her urine and her crying out from the pain.Sad She was fine 24 hours ago, now she's back to where she was a week ago. Another road trip with a screaming cat, oh joy!

Awww, poor little kitty. I hate it when our pets aren't feeling well Sad Good on you for taking care of Tinkerbell. Vets cost a fortune but I just can't stand to see an animal suffer.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have the #2 special, eggs over easy, bacon, home fries, and a double order of sour dough toast to go along with my dark roast coffee.  I hear you will getting the back ordered maple syrup now that they have caught the thieves who stole 30 million dollars worth from a warehouse in Canada.... Yes

Sun keeps coming out now and then this morning here in the Finger Lakes.  But not to worry, by this afternoon the clouds will reappear and the wind and rain will start in as the big Winter Storm heads this way.  Not supposed to get any white stuff until tomorrow they say...  I am supposed to go to a Museum meeting Rochester tonight so I will watch the forecast closely today.

Todd....???  Your not making any ¢. Whistling Laugh  When the all electric range on the battery is gone it costs me about 33¢ to charge it.  The gas tank hold 10.6 gallons of gas and the car is supposed to get a range of 560 miles on a tank...  I was told, "DO NOT RUN IT OUT OF GAS!"  BTW, there some things they learned from the railroads being used in the car.  For instance there is no fan belt.  The motor is directly attached to the generator which is also the starter.  It uses regenerative braking which is much the same as Dynamic Braking on a locomotive.  If fact there is a transmission setting for added braking (for going down long hills) which gives increased regenerative braking in the system.  It does work quite well I might add and you can see the power level in the battery increase quite quickly.

Ken, good luck with the house prospect.

Robby, good to see you back here.  I have missed your photos and your weathering!

I better get moving as I have much to do before the "end of the world"...Whistling

Later!

Todd, actually gasoline was the byproduct of kerosene.  When whale oil prices spiked kerosene was found to be a cheaper fuel for oil lamps.  Gasoline was tossed in large burning covered kettles to be disposed of.

Mornin All Cowboy

My eyes feel better today, so I'll see if I can get the rest of the decals on today. At least I wont need my reading glasses AND the magnifier. One if the 2 will suffice.Big Smile Thanks to all for the kind words for these engines. Step brothers to the F3, actually more like homely sister!Wink

Ken The listing does say pets are negotiable. The "bonus" room looks like it would fit a model railroad nicely! My fingers are crossed for ya!

Well, gotta go soon as the vet calls. Little Tinkerbell was on the last day of antibiotics for a bladder infection, and she started again with blood in her urine and her crying out from the pain.Sad She was fine 24 hours ago, now she's back to where she was a week ago. Another road trip with a screaming cat, oh joy!

Sigh+

Oopps,, top of the page? Here Flo, take the plastic now!!Big Smile
