jeffrey-wimberly Had a derailment this morning with five cars and one loco going to ground. It happened on the northeast corner of the layout just coming through knutzville and it was a mess. That area is the hardest to reach so a grip and grab reach extender is required. For this reason it's near impossible to rerail anything at that location. Uncoupling the fallen loco from the three in front of it was a little tricky. Retrieving said loco required the grip and grab. Thank God I don't go in for fancy details and angel hair guardrails. The loco is a Bachmann GP7 so it's tough as an old boot! One of the cars was a bit of a nut to crack as well. It's one of the old Tyco 'Old Dutch Cleanser' hoppers so there's not much chance of hurting it. The problem there was that it landed against a couple of structures and it was flat on it's side. I had to flip it up then reach in and grab it before it fell back down. Not so easy with a Grip and Grab. After getting all that cleaned up it was time to find the cause. Inspecting the cars I had retrieved revealed nothing. Looking back along the track I found a small black screw laying on the track. I don't use that type screw to hold my couplers so it wasn't from that. The train was back in service by this time so I brought it around and started checking each and every car by lifting first the front then the rear. My aim with this was to find a loose truck. And I did! the 22nd car back. An Athearn 34' cement hopper. The only thing keeping the truck in place was the mounting nub on the bolster. Looked like Murphy was prepared to have yet ANOTHER day at my expense. That was an easy fix. Still I checked the remaining cars to be sure. You know how that old Mr Murphy is!

tcwright973JR - I like the layout of your yard. Could you give me the approximate size it is taking up. Seeing your photo has given me an idea if I ever do get around to building something.
Me too JR. I really quite liked the yard layout you have there and it kind of looks like about the same space as I have. Sooooo I'd like to know your dimensions as well.
Thanks
last night was ok at work I guess, tonight we're doing a huge buffet almost similar to our thanks giving one so hopefully it'll be easy because every other night this winter break has been a massacre. fatigue has becme a close friend.

I thought I would take a moment to wish everyone a very Happy New Year. We will be staying home tonight as usual. When we were first married, a very long time ago, we would go out to various clubs on New Years eve. Mainly because the wife's Aunt was a singer. So we would go whereever she was booked. When she retired, we decided it was starting to be too big a hassel and started staying home.
We just got home a little bit ago. It was our usual Monday routine. First breakfast at our diner, then grocery shopping and errands. This was the last day our little dinner will be open for business. All the usual people were there and everyone was kind of sad. But we did get to say goodbye to our waitress and the cook, who is from Egypt. Now we have to find a new place. Why is everything I like disappearing?
We did go railfanning yesterday, but it wasn't very busy. Only 3 trains in 2 hours. Better than nothing I suppose.

Good Evening!
Only a little more than 6 hours to go! Our friends "down-under" have already arrived at 2013...

Well, I´ll be calling it a day here in the forum - have a safe journey over!
Good Morning,
A very brisk day here in Winterpeg, as in -26C with a -31 windchill. Mind you it is a dry cold.
For us 2012 was a relatively peaceful year compared to the ones recently but I don't think 2013 will be quite so uneventful. We have the big trip coming up and I expect major changes at work but we shall see.
Jerry, that ball diamond is amazing especially when you realize it is N scale! Now that I am working on a N scale layout I have a new appreciation for such detail as those parts are very tiny. I've just started the University Ave. shops kit which looks like an easy one.
J.R. how do you find the time to do so much work on your layout? We all know how busy you are at work so you must be one very energetic guy. Personally I ususally just want to flop after work and lately I am not very busy at all. I blame it on the age thing now that I'm collecting OAS.
On the RR front, I'm running CPR now which means all diesel. I'm thinking about selling off my CP engines except for the S4 switcher. I may build a switching shelf layout in the future depending on what we wind up with for space once we make the big move so I would keep that switcher.
Well time to get moving here. We have to finalize a few details for the trip and start to figure out the packing. That is a major task as we are going to be flying in a 5 seater for some legs which means a significant weight restriction but we also need some dressy clothes because a jacket and tie is a requirement for dinner on Rovos Rail.

Mornin' everyone!
What!!!???!!! Dick Clark won't be there tonight? Heck I thought he died years ago! And if Guy Lumbago is dead why don't they let him rest in peace instead of putting on the horrid rendition of the Royal Canadians wobbling through Auld Lang Syne? Sarcasm... Sarcasm guys! (Sheesh miss the newspaper just one day and look what happens.)
Zoe, I'll have a bowl of "Old Phart" cereal this morning and lots and lots of dark roast coffee. Slept pretty good last night, but now have laryngitis to contend with. Still I think I am on the mend.
Ulrich, may 2013 be a much better year for you and Petra!
Best get moving, I still have a lot of things to get done this year!

[edit] As soon as I made this post, I ambled off to the bathroom with the idea of taking a shower to start the day... No sooner was I standing there in the "all together" when I hear a knock at the door! Now I think, "who would be so rude as to be knocking at my door before noon on the last day of the year and figured whoever it was, they would give up and go away". No dice... Kept knocking, so I put my bathrobe back on and headed out to where I could peek and see whose vehicle was in the driveway. A large pick up truck. I made my way to the bedroom and threw on yesterday's clothes while the intruder kept knocking. I finally opened the front door to find the installer from O'Connell Electric standing there. He need to add some colored tape to the wiring for the solar panels (He had run out back when he was finishing the install). Before he left, he got out a long roof rake and cleared off the bottom two rows of panels on the roof for me! Back in the electric business at least partially. I have a roof rake coming on Wednesday that should reach to the top of the roof, so I can finish the job then...

We'll get there sooner or later!
Morning All,
Deciding if I want breakfast or not. I go back to w**k tomorrow so the holiday season is over for me. I was thinking back over 2012 and it wasn't a great year for us here but I know it wasn't as bad as others have had.
I have to go out later to get gas in the truck and return a library book. I believe MOH wants to go to Jo-Ann's so I will get some plaster cloth there in prep of landscaping.
Garry- That was a nice scene in WPF last night.
Ulrich- A small slice please. MOH home makes them also. She makes one that has raspberry in the filling that is divine.
Hope everybody has a great day and doesn't celebrate excessively tonight. Prayers for those in need.

galaxy NP2626 I decided I would retire and actually today is my last day of being employed, even though the company has been shut down for Christmas Break, since the 21st. "Retirement" can be harder than "work". People think, that because you are retired, you HAVE NOTHING TO DO ALL DAY. SO they want you to "help them". "run errands for them", "baby sit" {if you have grandchildren}, "or do chores" for them....SInce YOU don't have to go to work!! Well, I had best get on to my "retirement chores'...the dishes and the laundry at least! Beef roast tonight for dinner!

Good morning. It's 44° with 80% humidity. It's mostly cloudy and there's a fair chance of rain. It's so cloudy this morning it still looks like 6am. Good thing I have no plans for doing anything outdoors. Rain seems to be the word of the day here and there's more on the way the next couple of days. I guess my activities will center around cleaning up the mess on the layout, if I get to it that is. There are other things that have to be done so there's no telling what may get in the way.
Good Afternoon!
It´s a gray day and so I feel. We used to go out with fiends on New Year´s Eve, but there are hardly any friends left to go out with and no money. So Petra and I will be all alone again - The loss of social contacts really eats me up.
Petra has made one of her award winning cheese cakes to cheer up a bit. Thought I´d take it here to share with you!
Enjoy!

Welp, it happened. Yup! Started to clean up the railroad. Got the layout cleaned off about 90%, enough to run a train around which, didn’t go well. Needs a good cleaning as does the loco I’m sure.I actually would have been surprised if it made it all the way around. Got most all the wood chips up and the sawdust and the floor mostly vacuumed. Still have a looong way to go but I got started. But I can at least get to the layout. Today I have a few things to do this morning, and then I hope to hit my desk I call a modelling bench (hey, Ray uses a piano)so I can use that again. At that point, I will be able to work on the layout in my spare time. During the day I said to myself multiple times, where am I gonna put all this shtuff? I need a dumpster. This is gonna take forever. How did I get this much junk. Why didn't I throw this away!!!!! Oh look at that! I need thaaaa.....NO! Trash.
Ray- Oh yes there is nothing as good as a fresh eggroll. Well actually, yes there is... but you know what I mean. And as you know, there is a huuuuge difference in my friends Mother’s and any you would get frozen or in a restaurant. Here anyway, because they get theirs all frozen too. Her eggrolls are the size of “eggrolls” maybe a little bigger actually. Depends of course on where you get them or what brand, but she uses the traditional wrapping like a Spring roll. Delicious, but she is Vietnamese so I don’t ask what’s in them. Glad to hear you’re feeling better.
Jeff- Sounds like you had an exciting morning yesterday. You didn’t mention injuries so I’m gonna assume there were none thank goodness. I’m not sure I recall a hospital there….., unless Ezra takes care of that too.
Hey, small town and it’s Louisiana. Very possible.
Vincent- The biggest problem between two people (especially male and female)…..is a third. Never, never, never, believe what someone said….someone else said. Go to the horses mouth. Not saying they’re lying, but misinterpreting is just as bad. Trust me.
Bama- I know a while back you said you changed employment, did you give up the autoparts store and travelling mechanic (and I don’t blame you on that!!! Boy what a pain and I ain’t tellin you nuthin you don’t know) for a dealership, or just a shop. Sounds like a pretty big one if it’s just a local shop.
J.R.- WHOA!!! You have quietly really been chugging away here between your travels!. I didn’t realize you’d made that much progress. Looks fantastic!
Karl- Why did you tell Ray about Guy and Dick before New Years? We don’t mention Guy Lambardo’s passing til after New Years so Ray has all year long to forget and look forward to next New Years Eve. Guess we’ll have to do the same with Dick Clark. We were just gonna try and keep that one from him.
Aaaaaaand NOW I know about the macaroni part of Yankee Doodle which I never understood and also why they say three sheets to the wind.
Post was longer than I thought (imagine that) so tomorrow….the eggroll story. Worthless info…...love it!!

Ulrich, I can relate! I was laid off almost all of 2009 and on into 2010. I was called back to my old job March 1st 2010 and it was great to ba back at work for another couple years. I decided I would retire and actually today is my last day of being employed, even though the company has been shut down for Christmas Break, since the 21st.
Good luck to you and it will get better! However, lake shore prices are at a premium here in Minnesota even though the market is still a little flat.
Also, Chin-up! my guess is you are not as old as I am and that is a good thing!

Ulrich - I can't wait!
And thanks. I'm looking forward to receiving my first shipment of rollingstock next week. I have a few plans, I aim to take elements of his layout for mine, selecting a few of the industries. It will of course have room to expand if I ever am able to get the other half of the layout room cleared out.
Happy New Year everyone. I plan on heading into town around 9pm after the early fire works have gone off and the families head off. It shouldn't be as crowded for the midnight fireworks.
