Afternoon guys

A stop in between work and running at the train club's shw downtown. I brought 2 trains, a piggy back train with an SD45 and F45, and an open autorack train (with a verta-pac and a M60A3 on a flat car thrown in) with a GP15, GP38-2, and a GP30.I'd take pics, but I don't have any batteries to put in my camera.

Rob, Sorry to hear about your dad.

I'll stop back in later.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Well,

We had a TRUE BLUE MIRACLE happen here!!!

The sky went to blue, cleared up and the SUN {oh no! It burns!} came out!!! So nice we havethe door open for some fresh air and the furnave set at 65 hasn't come on...mind you theres the semi-enclosed porch inthe way of fresh air just rushing in.

Went shopping for two things: one for FILs dumb request for ONE item! and Two} for Christmas DINNER.

FIL wanted to know what it was, and I said "I'll cook it, and you'll eat it and LIKE it"...MIL agreed! Problem is, see if he decides he doesn't like what is coming he grumbles and groans that HE  didn't get what HE WANTED. THEN, get this--he grumbles and complains, but will eat 3 plate fulls of whatever we are having that HE DIDN'T like!!!

So NOW, i make it a mystery...iff'n you don't like it, you can go hungry, otherwise don't complain!!!

It will be smaked ham with pineapple, brown sugar glaze and chutney, and smashed red skin potatoes, green beans, cranberry sauce {wonder why?}, and cupcakes for dessert.

So, he will eat and like it {so will MIL..she can be picky lately too}.

Well, we did the bedding and MOH rotated the mattress. So THAT chore is done.

I finally found the kitchen counter.

et up the new humidifier.BOy it runs out of water fast..supposed to run up to 36 hours,..burns through a tank of h2o in about 2 hours at 50% humidity,. According to the humidistats in the house, we are at 65%, so the humidifier should shut off. It is a warm msit so we have to be careful it doesn't burn out the heating element.

Well, I shoud go now and get the ROAST LEG OF LAMB started,...that is what is for diner tonight!

later!

So Garry is the DCC genius is he? I'll have to remember that for future reference.

Dennis

Not really. I'm still on the DCC learning curve. Jeff and Ken are knowledgable on DCC.

Dr. Google is a good source too. If you have a particular locomotive for which you would like to install a decoder search for it. Here is an example: "install DCC Atlas HO GP7" ...... If you get a hit with either the TCS site or Tony's Train Exchange, I would try one of them because I find they explain very well. .... Also the is good info in the MR Electronics and DCC Forum.

Dennis .... Maybe JomCG was thinking of my DCC install in an older Bachmann 44T. It was a nightmare project, and I suggest nobody every try doing that in the early 2-moter Bachmann 44T's.  .... Now, I have over 30 locomotives with DCC, and I'm still trying to figure out some of the CV's. It is certainly best to get "DCC ready" locomotives.

Not much to report on my layout. Company is now here from Michigan and from Ohio for Christmas. We have a full house with lots of activity.

Morni....  Ahem!  Afternoon folks!

Didn't get in here this morning...  Had to go to church.  Well, my granddaughters needed someone to sit next to.

Today was the last Sunday for our pastor who is officially retiring Dec. 31st.  He does have two more services to do tomorrow though....  He arrived in Geneva just a few months before we did.  We are glad he and his family are staying here in Geneva in retirement as he has been very active in many good community groups.

Currently 35°F with melting snow outside here in the Finger Lakes.  The bright orb is showing through at the moment, so it is a rather nice day out there.

The Christmas Shopping is done, but I still have several packages to wrap and cookies to bake this afternoon.  Slim chance I might even get to do some model w*rk too.

Catch you all later!

CDN Dennis, I'm not sure I want to know what the temperature is in your area later this winter! Surprise What do you get to do when it's as cold as (or colder than) that? Wow I can deal with some cold days, but that's another kinda cold (IMHO...). As for DCC's easyness, talk to Garry about that one.WinkWhistling

What do we do when it gets colder you ask JIm? Well Albertan's are a pretty tough breed you know. Anything lower than -25C we plug in the vehicle block heater. Usually but on another sweater if going out side and just "keep on trucking" so to speak. When you've lived here most of your live, it's sort of business as usual. The house contractors even build houses down to about -25C. Like I say business as usual.

So Garry is the DCC genius is he? I'll have to remember that for future reference.

Well folks, time to put on the extra sweater I mentioned and get out there and shovel the s**w that fell over night.....bout 4 inches I'd say. Hmm

Then it's off the the automotive store for a couple of more spools of #12 wire. Ah yes and present wrapping is on my Honey do List.

cheers to all

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and the Sunday breakfast buffet please. Thank you.

Cold.

ALMOST got to the trainroom yesterday! Woo hoo! Close. BUT…Brenda decided we had to go to town to eat. She wanted to go back to that new Chinese buffet again because apparently the waitresses are too friendly at our usual oneLaugh. We got a guy waiter and she seemed to be ok with that saying "he was a good waiter." I said he was ok." She chuckled and said "You're just upset you had to actually order your drink and when you came back from the buffet, you didn't just automatically have a refill and a clean, spotlessly clean, place. You're not being pampered." "I said "true". She patted my hand and said "don't worry, you can be served properly later this week for lunch." I said I hoped they weren't mad I went somewhere else. She doubted they would even know and added "at least I didn't have to worry my meal was sabotaged." Smile, Wink & Grin So….by the time we got back, I got involved in something else......napYes. And then I picked up some more.

Today, couple loads of laundry, deliver a couple bikes to the daughter’s house, probably a stop at Wally’s for a few groceries, and in there somewhere, based on the time Brenda chose to drop the bikes off, eat. I swear I don’t know why we even have a stove anymore. It’s energy efficient all right. After that, it’ll be home for….we’ll see.

Whew! Got distracted and now 2 hours later am gonna post this. By the way, told Brenda I was gonna get into the trainroom today with any luck. She looked at me and said…..”maybe”. Then she started telling me about the shelves in the storage room I haven’t finished for about 12 years. Sounds to me like today is the day. Oh well.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Morning gang! Cowboy

Yummy, Pumpkin pie and coffee for breakfast!!DinnerYeah

We survived the main assault! The big holiday gathering with all the kids is now a memory. We're still attending other holiday function, but the others are more genteel, less rambunctios that a whole mess of kidsSurprise The cats, smartly headed for the basement as soon as the grandsons arrived, and stayed there till way after they left.

After they had opened all the gifts, we spun them a story on how they had one other present, but it was too large to fit in Santa's sleigh, so he made a special trip here, so that I could deliver it for him. We took them out to the garage and , to say the least, were very excited to their very own train set! Took us 5 minutes just to get them to stand still for a picture!! Tomorrow we will put it in my truck and take it to them! (and Grandpa gets his garage back!)

It was really fun to see the excitement in their eyes!Big Smile However, I could see the wheels turning in their fathers eyes too. I could see that we just gave him the excuse he needed to start into the hobby too! Mischief

Anyways, thats over with!

Jeffrey, Pizza with Pinto beans and jalapenos?? You must be joking. DO NOT go near an open flame my friend, or Sunrise might be obliterated! Surprise

Rob, my condolences to you and yours.Crying

Morning All,

Sitting here drinking coffee going through my Emails and the forum. Everybody else here is still snoozing.

We finished up Christmas shopping last night-finally, by finding a gift for my SIL. Most are wrapped already. I did receive some good news the other day. On Christmas I was scheduled to w**k from 2-10 PM so I wasn't going to see the rest of the family but a co-worker wanted me to switch with him, so now I w**k 8 AM - 5 PM, and I will get to see everyone and have Christmas dinner with the family.Smile

Today around 2 PM I will be watching the grand kids for several hours while MOH and my daughter do something at the day spa. I think I see trains in our future.Smile

I have decided that I will probably be attending the Prototype Rails 2013 show the second weekend in January. I went a couple of years ago and had a very enjoyable time. It is held in Cocoa Beach, FL. I met the current Pennsy Historical Society president there when he was giving a lecture on the FOM (streamlined passenger cars).

Jeff- I hope you feel better very soon.

Well I hope everyone has a great day and prayers for those in need.

Good morning. It's 56° with 92% humidity and patches of light rain are falling. The high will be 70° with rain this morning and afternoon.

I have no idea what I'll be doing today. Maybe the best thing will be to wait and see what develops. I woke up last night shaking all over and quickly realized I was heading for a sugar crash. A quick snack took care of that in short order. This morning I'm just, well, tired. Maybe I'll just head back to bed.

Good morning,

Jim, yes the airlines are fragile and those do take some practice.  The only kits I try to stay away from are the red caboose line.  Lots of detail and a lot of holes are too small and there seems to be a ton of fuss to assemble them.  I have a few vacu-formed kits on the shelf I haven’t attempted by California models.

Ulrich, you just need to be grateful for the times you did have together and remember Christmas doesn’t have to be on a certain date.  When I was on active duty I don’t think I ever had a holiday on the prescribed date.

Evening All,  An iced tea please. Currently 1140 hours, 67 F with 81% humidity. White Christmas for us is only seen on Christmas cards.

JimRCGMO,  they must be working you far too hard. Smile  It was kbkchooch Karl with the grandsons, who is also going for the job interview. Good luck to him too.

As for the brownie points, I don't have to try to hard to end up back in negative territory, Sigh. Just after we got married I found out that there were bets laid that the marriage would be lucky to last six months, now coming up to our 23 rd anniversary so I guess with brownie points, or as in my case, lack thereof, things haven't been that bad. Smile, Wink & Grin

Good Morning!

I woke up with a sad feeling. My son and his GF were supposed to join us today, so we could spend Christmas Eve together, but now we will be all alone. This is the first Christmas without our son, and  I am really unhappy about this.

It is currently 33F and raining. The news are filled with accident reports, as the roads are covered with ice. I am just glad I don´t have to go anywhere today - Petra and I will have a quiet Sunday, filled with memories.

While Petra is getting ready for the day (she already made a nice cake for us), I had nothing better to do than redo my avatar, just to be a little more in line with my kit loco:

Have a splendid day!

Morning Coffee with friends in the Diner...

GOOD MORNING!!!

Today is Sunday, December 23rd, 2012!!

Only TWO, Count 'em, TWO more shopping days til Christmas!!

I Know around here, we have some URBAN MYTHs...so:

Meaning:

A story, generally untrue but sometimes one that is merely exaggerated or sensationalise, that gains the status of folklore by continual retelling. Such stories, which may be old and cliché-ridden, are often given a degree of plausibility by being updated in a contemporary setting, or by the teller's claims of personal involvement.

Origin:

{Note: This is a language issue, and so we are primarily concerned here with the meaning and origin of the term 'urban myth' rather than with the myths themselves, although it's hard to write about myths without straying into that territory. Suffice to say, if you want to know about any particular urban myth there are numerous web sites, newsgroups and books to accommodate you.}

It is impossible to manage a website about etymology without coming into daily contact with 'folk etymology', which is the linguistic branch of urban mythology and here the ludicrous  nonsense stories that are circulated as 'Life in the 1500s' tops the pile.

This topic is such a cans of worms that I hardly know where to begin. The words used in the little term 'urban myth' are contentious in themselves, so let's start there. Why 'urban'? The setting of these stories isn't limited to cities; for example, the Vanishing Hitch-hiker tale is usually set on some deserted back road. The stories that fall in the 'urban myth' category aren't limited to city life - they are those that are set in contemporary industrialized societies, as distinct from traditional folklore tales.

Then there's 'myth'. Many students of this field prefer the terms 'urban legend' or 'urban folklore'. 'Myth' implies that the stories are all false and, whilst most of them clearly are, some may contain elements of truth. In fact, one of the essential factors in a plausible retelling is the introduction of real events; top of that list of course being the claim that 'I was really there - it happened to me'. If the teller wasn't there then you can be sure that a 'FOAF' (friend of a friend) was. This word has now also entered the language via these stories and has its own definition in the Oxford English Dictionary.

Perhaps a name that is nearer to being definitive of this form of story would be 'contemporary legend'.

Another source of dispute is the origin of all of these terms. Mythology and the need to tell tall tales are obviously ancient, but the term 'urban myth' isn't especially old. A version of it dates from 1960, when it was used by William H. Friedland in conference paper titled Some Urban Myths of East Africa. Likewise, the term 'urban legend' was put in print as early as 1925, when it appeared in a New York Times piece headed 'Europe’s Population Growth':

"Around the subject of population there has been a growth of popular legend hard to remove. Great Britain illustrates the urban legend."

This 'urban legend' citation isn't the contemporary meaning but refers to stories about urban life in Great Britain that were mythical.

The first reference I can find to 'urban legend' in the sense we mean here is Richard M. Dorson Our Living Traditions, 1968:

"Urban legends deal with the ghostly hitchhiker, the stolen grandmother, and the death car."

One of the first of the 'urban myths', and surely now a classic, is the tale of alligators living in New York City's sewers. This is the first  story that describes an actual urban myth and the source of the belief was a borderline insane scheme by Little Rock Council to buy alligators from New York and use them to chase away beavers. This was printed in The Frederick Post,  August 1984:

'The ordinance authorized the mayor to negotiate "at arms length" with New York City officials for the alligators, which urban myth says thrive in the city's sewer system.'

Now; have you heard the one about the ghostly etymologist who microwaved his grandmother's pet monkey...?

Good Evening, Janie - I'll have a  Rio Grande  mug of eggnog and a gingerbread cookie, please. Thanks!

JaBear, best wishes on landing that job (and safely getting out of the auto biz...). AngelAngel Boy, I would've loved to see your grandsons' faces when they saw "what Santa left..." Hope you got quite a few brownie points with the CFO for the movie trip!

Lee, on those kits, maybe I just had some old kits, and the (thin) plastic parts were more brittle than usual? Because I have some bright lamps for when I'm w**king on detailed kits (couple of them, if needed). Do the smaller parts (airbrake lines, etc.) seem fragile to you?

Did I see Barry in the Diner earlier? Oh, verrry briefly, eh, Janie? He must be just starting his shopping, I guess...Whistling

Galaxy, I hope your dentist has some decent antibiotics to reign in any infection/decay on your tooth. But don't wait too long on that...Dead I'm with Todd, at least have a weekend or Sunday "Things You Always Wondered About..." Thumbs Up

Garry, Laugh I don't know where you get some of your stuff that you post...Laugh I'm with TA462, I'm gonna send that one to some more friends. (Chuckle.... snicker...teehee..) Laugh Nice gondolas (and loads) there. Thumbs Up

Todd - was that other grocery store by any chance, IGA? When I was growing up in St. Louis area, my grandparents' company did those on-the-roof heating and cooling units for a lot of the IGA stores. I can spot a former IGA supermarket building pretty easily, even now.

On a (sorta) related note, when Cape G. redid their Broadway street along several blocks heading toward downtown (probably in prep for the casino that was coming to town), they added partially bricked crossings, benches every so often on the sidewalks, and little insets where there were small trees or groupings of bushes. Looks pretty picturesque (though it decreased the parking spaces along the street). There's no parking on the side of the street for people heading away from the area downtown where the casino is (hmm, maybe because the people visiting might've had something to imbibe and were driving home - when they should've taken a cab like Galaxy mentioned?...). Whistling

Jeff, maybe I forgot that cartoon that Garry posted... How're the van's electrical woes coming along? Hope the wiper (re-)wiring goes smoothly (and holds until you can afford a good used replacement). (I hope you don't smoke, after that meal with your Dad!) Oops

Your comments about folks there being ill-prepared for snow, reminded me of when I lived in the Missouri Bootheel (many, many years ago...). They got an inch or two of snow - now keep in mind, almost the entire Missouri Bootheel is flat, but apparently the people in that town apparently do NOT know how to drive when it snows (because the area - like yours - don't get it very often) Wow - they don't get ice and snow at the same time there. Loved your story about the transplanted Vermont farmer...Laugh

Ray, it's good that you got the wood stocked up and tended to the showblower a bit ago, eh? As you said, snowy days are good for staying inside, hot cocoa, and probably some MRR mini-projects. That, or w**king on your suntan... Yeah Better be careful about going outside if your winter coat is red - from some of the photos of yourself that you've posted, the kids who don't recognize you may be giving you their lists (and plate of cookies with a glass of milk...) Smile, Wink & Grin Hope your son's MIL gets her Christmas turned around to a more positive note... AngelAngel

Ulrich, all I have to say on your loco project is: BowBowBow Good that you didn't have to get out today and drive anywhere!

Ken, I'd say you got a bit of payback at Jason's expense! (His fault for not checking things out carefully?) That's a nice bit of change toward your commission, plus you come off as a good guy, and Jason looks to the customer like he doesn't know his stuff... (which it appears he doesn't). Thumbs Up to you! Awesome shot of 4023 there! Bow That would look lovely enlarged and framed in your new train room (once you and Sue get to move to the 'new' home)!

Last night's dinner and time visiting with daughter, son-in-law and my two grandsons went well. Except at one point the oldest was "playing Batman" with #2 oldest, and pushed/hit (not hard, but..). Daughter said to #1, something about "Batman doesn't hit his brother..." Smile, Wink & Grin Daughter thinks well on her feet (so to speak).

Today, I got a somewhat late start on laundry, and did get the tree lights lit up. Yesterday, I'd bought a couple of extension cords - I didn't like the choices at big box stores (looked too flimsy or weren't the right length), so I then went to the farm supply place. THEY had pretty much what I wanted. Well, except that I needed one of length between the two I got, but it w**ks, so okay... LED tree lights are pretty bright (and look kind of funny, after being used to the older kind)...

Time for me to wind it up and head for home, I think.

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape G.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, a hot cup of decaf would be great right now.  I'll go sit by the wood stove and keep warm for a bit.

My son called me about 3:45 this afternoon.  I was out cleaning the driveway when he called so I called him back as i saw he had called while I was looking up the number of a lady who called to ask me to be an usher at church on Christmas Eve...  Anyway It seems it was his BIL birthday and he was supposed to let me know there was a party for him tonight at there house...  He told me dinner was at 5PM.  Since I didn't want to run to the store just for a birthday card, I made one up and printed it on the computer.  Got it done and headed over to son's house.  Prius was covered in ice from the rain last night before it turned to snow. so I spent a bit of time scraping the ice off.  I figured I should still get there around 4:45.  Took the back road as usual and regretted it almost immediately!  About an 8th. mile up the road it turned to a glare of ice...  Then I saw all the flashing lights.  I had slowed down to about 15 mph anyway.  Up ahead there was 3 fire trucks, 4 police cars, and several fireman's vehicles.  Behind me by that time was a snowplow salting the road (a bit late I might add...).  The fuss was all about a light pickup truck that had gone off the road and flipped over into the ditch!  Most of the top of the cab was lying a few feet away from the body of the truck!  I doubt the driver survived.

I let the snow plow with the salt go around me when the go ahead was given from the firemen (sat there for about 10 minutes waiting) and followed the salt truck to my son's house (at the 15 mph speed).  Turns out I was 10 minutes late but was still the first one there.  MY DIL had seen the emergency vehicles go down the road, and was calling everyone to go thru Waterloo and not take the back road.  I pull in my son's driveway to see an old dead pine tree from his neighbors property had come down across his driveway in the wind....  Right on top of his MIL's car...  Took out the passenger side front windshield and put a major ding on the hood of her car.  She was the one who lost her little dog last week in the road.  She is not having a good Christmas so far.

Since none of them actually know the name of the neighbor and her insurance can't proceed without the name and address of the owner of the tree.  I came home and spent about an hour online and finally got the Name, Address, age, wife's name, and some other info they won't need of the neighbor.  (They don't know the address as they live outside of town where the numbers are anywhere from 6 to 14 numbers apart...)  The guy is in the process of moving to Florida at the moment so they couldn't just go over and find anyone there, of course.

Hope you are all having a better evening than my son's MIL....  Prayers for all in need!

 Evening Folks

Flo, why thank you for the Beer

Gary, just when I thought I knew what your layout looked like. Cool Ever think of giving us dinners a photo tour?

Work Front, odd day. Had more mechanical work than tires. Tires and alignments is about the only way I make any commission with me not being allowed to far the ticket for brakes, suspension and other repairs. That is for the services manager only! (Jason is greed-ed spell check? Whistling) Anyway he let one fall though the cracks. Girl came in with a electrical problem that needed to be done by the dealer. He was charging her $12.00 for the inspection and that was it. She all so stated that when she hit bumps the front end made a clanking sound, Jason never addressed that issue.

Seems she need struts and strut mounts (mounts had to come from the dealer) So I lucked out and turned a $12.00 ticket into a $780.00 ticket! Laugh Jason was there as it was taking places! Big Smile I could feel is eyes trying to bore a hole in the back of my head as I was doing it! That was the best part! Cool

  See you all later.

Looks like the cause of my vans battery running down is the windshield wiper motor. The auto return on it is locked on full time. Right now the plug has been pulled on it.  Next time I go to town I'll see about turning it in for a replacement. I'm not sure about Advance Auto Parts warranty on re-manufactured parts. If that doesn't work out I'll see what I can do about putting a toggle switch on the plugs hot wire.

After working on 'The Beast' I was feeling a bit dizzy so decided I better lay down for a bit. I promptly passed out and had a nice couple of hours nap time. I had a high starch meal afterward to get my blood sugar level back up.

Had dinner with my father again. Pizza and pinto beans with onions and jalapeno peppers. An explosive combination I'm sure.

Hey, hey, hey....!  We are now getting something we haven't seen in several days here in these parts.  It's called "Sun

I know the feeling. We are having a little cold snap for Christmas with pretty much continuous light snowfall. The kind that falls when it's -20C which is fine fine. It does add up though.

Just taking a break from the layout main bus wiring.... I bought two 100 foot rolls of # 12 wire for the bus thinking that would be plenty. Right, I just ran out and still need about 50 feet more. Too late to go get it today so I suppose it will be tomorrow. Just realized that I have a 120 foot main line. How about that Big Smile More than I anticipated.

Since I can't run any more bus wire today I might as well start to connect the track feeder wires which are pretty much all in to the main. Then of course the reverse loop once I get more wire and the programming track needs to be set up properly. Lets see

Oh rightTongue Tied not to forget the turnout machine wires and the Loco net cable. Sheesh and here I thought DCC was easier...

Right

Cheers All

I'll drop in later

Afternoon folks!

Chloe, I'll have a bowl of home made Chicken Soup, crackers, and a glass of Cherribundy Lite.  Thank you Ma'am.

Ulrich, your little loco is coming along beautifully.  I always marvel how a guy named Harold Russell does such fantastic brass soldering on the O scale locos he has been assembling...  (he is in his 80s).  That is going to be a great model!

Hey, hey, hey....!  We are now getting something we haven't seen in several days here in these parts.  It's called "Sun"!  Yep the sun is shining outside right now.  I have to put my coat on, find the sn*w sholvel and clean off the porch I guess.  Also want to see how much white stuff has landed on the solar panels.  Was down cellar doing a couple loads of wash earlier and the panels were making 42w of power.....  They say the sn*w will melt off quickly as the panels get warm.  We shall see...  Sure would like to make use of the brightness out there at the moment.  Still lots of white fluffy blowing around out there.  Wind is a constant 22mph with gust to 45 from time to time.

Later!
