Thats nothing Jeff wait until it gets down to -30c here Stick out tongue

-22F? No thanks. I spent a winter in an area where it was -50 once. I swore I'd never be anywhere that cold again. Coldest It's ever gotten in Louisiana is -16 and that was way back in 1899.  Coldest I've experienced here was around -5. I remember that night well. My car was so heavy from accumulated ice I had two blowouts. Good thing I was in the habit of carrying several spares, usually two regular tires and one donut. You DO NOT want to try driving on ice with a donut. That's a good way to get on the list of Darwin Award nominees. Cold temps in January usually average about 49F. Now if you want to move somewhere where there's lots of rain, average rainfall where I am is between 50-60 inches a year. South Louisiana is 70 inches a year. We're the second wettest state in the US. Only Hawaii is wetter.

Evenin' folks!

Janie I'll have a cup of decaf and a seat by the wood stove please.

Currently 33°F with light snow falling or moving sideways I should say.  Could get about an inch of the stuff overnight.  Tomorrow the temp will drop a few degrees and we could get 2 to 5 inches of the white stuff.  I don't have much of anyplace to go (may go to the credit union to deposit a refund check from the car registration) so it can come down all it wants.  I do worry about my son and my DIL who have to drive several miles to get to and from work every day.

Had fun with granddaughter #2 this afternoon.  She is a busy young lady!  I got to meet granddaughter #1 when she got off the bus today and walked into the house with her.  By that time their grandmother had returned from work (semi-retired nurse) so I took my leave and did some grocery shopping.  After the next time I go grocery shopping I should have enough points accumulated to get 50¢ per gallon off a fill up on gasoline.  I should also need to get the car filled up about that time also...  Good timing I think as I have to use the points by the first week in January.

Jeremy, that's good camping weather where you live!  I used to love winter camping.  Glutton for punishment I guess...

Rob, sorry to hear about your father!  Do catch us up about the goings on on the farm...  You have quite a menagerie IIRC.

So Galaxy still have the same number of teeth you had this morning?  Inquiering minds want to know.

Gotta go bring another armload of wood for the stove and plug in the car to recharge the battery.  Catch you all later!

Prayers for all in need...

 Evening Dinners

 Flo, Beer Pleases.

Gary, really Big Smile to see you back and hope you stay back! Good news on the Big Boy, I love Big Boys Steam Engines that is! Here is a direct link.

Got a little of my Christmas shopping done. Got Sue a LEC or is it a LED HD TV with built in DVD player. Yes it is for her and not me.It will go in the bedroom so she can watch her TV shows. Her TV while it works is so old I cannot hook up a DVD player or the newer style VCR (if you can say there is a new style), her old VCR died. Newer style she bought, well it needs a lot of extra junk to make it work.

 See you all later.

Hi Guys,

Cold out here tonight. -8c and snowing with some strong winds to boot. I'm not doing much just sitting here reading some old military modeler magazines with a cup of coffee and contemplating starting work on a 1/35 scale Sherman. Still looking for a job but I don't think I will have any luck for a week or so until after Christmas. Well I'm off to go take a look at that Sherman and maybe read through some of my armor building books. I might take some time off from the railroad as I have hit a stale period at the moment.

Well, I had dinner with my father tonight. Chicken pie, home fries, green beans, corn. Pretty good dinner. When I got home I took the ground cable off the vans battery and I heard a slight click from the firewall. I put it back on and there it was again. I did it several more times trying to locate it but some moron up the road is shooting off fireworks and driving the neighborhood dogs nuts. So I can't get an exact location on the noise. It's coming from the general area where the windshield motor, voltage regulator and a few other things are located. I do know it's not the alternators diodes causing a drain. I drove it for several miles then checked the temp of the alternator casing. It was only slightly warmer than the mounting bracket which was cool to the touch. I double checked it with a probe to be sure since I can only feel a little heat. I can pick up a hot pot and have blisters on my hands and hardly feel a thing. Maybe tomorrow I can locate where the noise is coming from. Could be the voltage regulator locked in the on position? Or maybe the auto return on the wiper motor is acting up?

Good Afternoon/Evening-and-We're-Still-Here(Na-nah-na-boo-boo-Mayan-calendar-makers...), Chloe. I'll have a RBF please. Thank you!

JR, my apologies and condolences. I had recalled that you lived somewhere in New England, but just today saw that you're in Newtown. AngelAngel

Lee, so far I find that Proto 2000 kits and the E&B Valley kits tend to be stretching (or above) my skill level, due to the teensy-tiny (and fragile) plastic parts involved in them. My jury's still out about TIchy, but I think I ran into a little of that problem with the Tichy flatcar kits (though maybe I just have too big of hands...). Or maybe I just need a lot more light, or new glasses for the really up-close stuff involved in kits. (Nope, not really interested in O scale; I have too much invested in HO stuff already).

Galaxy, a good rest sounds like a good idea for you; as you said, you may have overdone the other day. Maybe (if possible) a few Zzz's... Hey, so JDR was responsible for the Vanderbilt passenger cars fading away? Wink

Todd, I'd put ol' Nostradamus out there with those stone calendar-makers. But hey, when I read that Nossy wrote his predictions in poetry form, that took his credibility down a notch. Spell it out for us, soothsayers! (Thirteen, schmirteen!...)

Ray, love your terminology for them (Mall Wart...). Laugh I'm envious of you, having a chocolate store in your area! Dinner (I wish!)

Rob, good to hear the critters are still there (mostly?). How are the coyotes? - Still around, or did they go further south for the holidays? Sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. Hopefully he wasn't in pain for long towards the last. As you say, too many veterans from then are gone. AngelAngel

TSF, sound like you have your friend's number, perhaps? Ask him if he's willing to chip in on the gas and insurance (that'll weed things out quite quickly, I'm sure).

Garry, that Amish Christmas lights video would've been better, but the bass on it was turned up too loud for my liking.

Jerry - nice l'il enginehouse (that could? Wink) there! You're right, looks squeaky clean (so far...). Keep taking care of Sallie - I'm sure she appreciates the time spent with you. Thumbs Up

CDN Dennis - so that's what happened! Laugh

I'm supposed to go have my birthday dinner with daughter and SIL this evening. Got about all my gifts-shopping done today. Now just some wrapping left to do. Whistling

Prayers for healing and comfort, and for safe driving for all those driving today, tomorrow (and maybe even Monday).

Blessings,

Jim in Cape G. (still on the face of the earth...)

Evening All.

Well it looks like we are still here.Whistling That was a close one. Cleaned house and ran out to pick up feeder wire for the layout. I came home intending to run trains but took a nap instead.  When I got up I found several old rail fanning videos of the PRR in NJ in the 60's that I watched, so all in all a pretty nice day so far..

Dennis in CA- I was going to say something but can't remember now what I wanted to sayDunce. Oh, now I remember have a great train ride and family visit.

Hey guys, glad to see the rest of you aren't gone from the Mayan FUBAR

Rob- Sorry to hear about your father, may he rest in peace. Another man from the greatest generation.

I've been meaning to stop in earlier, however I've been busy with that pain in the rear known as college and I was also contacted by a friend's dad about some work.

Besides that I've been working on my snowmobiles, both are ready for snow, but all we got was a dusting out here. Talk about an annoyance. And I've had a friend of mine get on every last blinking nerve about getting insurance on my snowmobiles so we could ride them on some trails. Which after some though is not going to happen because I know what is going to happen. I'm going to be paying for fuel, insurance, registration, maintenance, and haul them around while my buddy just rides. SoapBox I'm going to get off of my soapbox before I get going real good.

If you can read this... thank a teacher. If you are reading this in english... thank a veteran

Mornin'...  Hmmmm, everyone accounted for?  OK. I guess I can take off the tin foil hat until the next doomsday that comes along...Whistling

Zoe, I'll have a couple sour cream glazed donuts to dunk in my Dark Roast coffee, please.  What?  yes the FGLK mug would do fine.

Already been out and about this morning finishing the last of the Christmas shopping.  Needed more Organic Dark Roast coffee for my coffeemaker, so I picked up a couple lbs. for myself, and 4 half pounds of assorted types for giving out to "shirt tail relatives".  While I was in there I mentioned my next stop was the local chocolate store (they make excellent chocolate products at the store...).  Standing right behind me happened to be one of the owners of the Whisper Chocolate Store (a former student of mine).  I went and put the coffee in the car and went over to the chocolate store.  As I was walking to the door one of the owners was just unlocking the door for me.  I was there 15 minutes before opening time...  She probably got a phone call from next door....  That is one of the things I like about patronizing small local businesses.  Doubt that Mall Wart would do that for me!

I have to leave for my son's house to watch granddaughter #2 for the afternoon in a half hour, so I better get doing some of the things needing to be done before I leave.  White things are starting to fall from the sky...  OH NO! It's the end of the world!!!  Arrrrrgggggghhhhhhh!!! Just kidding, but the white has begun...

Later!

Lee- Was it kerosene? I was thinking it was diesel. We’ll go with kerosene. That stuffs up there too!

John D Rockefeller made his millions off kerosene. It was found to be  distilate of raw oil that: was stable, was clean burning, easy to keep and transport, provided good lighting source for homes.

Gasoline was  a by product produced when distilling kerosene out of oil. It was way to volatile and unstable and flamable to consider doing anyhting with {until Henry FORD came along and said, "hey, I can use that" .}

The Railroads were built on carrying JDR's "oil" on Vanderbilt's railroads. AS long as JDR agreed. He eventually buitl pipelines to carry his "oil" through wihtout using therailroads, causing a collapse on Vanderbilt.

Just a tid bit.

Good Morning!!!

Biscuits and gravy please. And oh you betcha coffee! Thanks.

Survived the blizzard last night and apparently may survive the end of the world sometime today in pretty good shape. My opinion of course, but I really don’t require much to be happy.Yes

Blizzard dropped oh about ¼” to ½” of snow but it’s spread around so sidewalks concrete is still showing. Black ice is the main issue.

Lee- Was it kerosene? I was thinking it was diesel. We’ll go with kerosene. That stuffs up there too!

Ray- LaughYah, I don’t know why when you typed  8 or 9 gals, I saw 8 or 9 centsLaugh. That would ne super nice though....... But even at 33 cents a day, if you drove enough every day do deplete the batteries, that is STILL cheap. Makes the power bill maybe seem a bit steep at the end of the month, but the wallet says cheaper. Now, if the excess power you make from your own personal solar system makes that much, hey it’s even cheaper.

Didn’t realize there was a black market for Maple syrup. Wonder what you'd do with it.

Ulrich- Looks good!

Rob Cederstand- Good to hear from you! Happy Holidays and a Merry Christmas to you. I know with the ranch it’s hard, but try not to overdo it.

Ken- Your stories just get more unbelievable every time. That’s just a figure of speech mind you, I DO believe you. I’ve had similar incidents over the years myself, just not all on one business or so continued. BOS must really want your house over your money. What do they know about it you don’t.

Hm. Lee’s probably wondering where his cab went. Now he knows.

Jeffrey- Disconnect the alternator for a while. You don’t see too much of that anymore, but then again….you don’t see too much of those alternators anymoreLaugh. I think we can rule out the computers and clocks as the culprit. Should be veeeeery little spark when connecting the negative terminal if any. Of course in my experience, and yours too I'm sure, that not the greatest of an indication of a short or something on as they say, but pretty good on the older stuff like yours. Todays stuff will just about arc like a welder with nothing on so to speak.

I’m sure glad this End of the World stuff is over. Well..., actually..., did they ever say when today? Indifferent They could still be right!Huh? Anyway, when it’s finally passed, they can start working on why the world will end next year. See, that's the bad part of these doomsday things happening so late in the year. Gives you very little time to plan for next years doomsday. I hope they're a bit more creative and not just dredge up some old worn out way they've used before. And I certainly hopethey don't "re-calculate" the Mayan calander. That would just be lame. And lazy too. In my fifty years on this planet I think there has been an end of the world every year for like 35 or 40 of them. And when are they gonna figure out Nostrildamis, didn’t predict a thing other than someday we all would die. If I wrote enough drug induced dreams down, some day in the future, you could look back at what happened and come up with some far fetched way it applied. I guess they figure someday they'll be right. Confused

HmmI wonder if there's a Friday the thirteenth in the year 013. Now that could be an indication of our impending doom right there. Wonder if Nossy saw that between opium hits.

As for them now saying “well it’s the “beginning” of the end”….duh, the world started to end the day it was created. Just like me, and every living thing. Well othern a cockroach.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Well, the world hasn't ended just yet!

Once again, MOH is up to somehting and it ain't for christmas. I hate that trust issues are paramount.

We shall see...I could runthe vacuum...naw, take it easy, galaxy i hear you all saying...

After long and careful thought, they have convinced me. I have come to the conclusion that they are right. The aliens did it.

Good Morning all,

I had a zombie scare this morning until I realized it was only my fellow federal employees waiting for the bus in 20 mph winds and 3” of snow…..

Ray you have some snow heading your way, if we get 5” you’ll be buried….

Jim, what do you consider tough rolling stock kits?

Jeff, I was having the same problem with my truck this summer: if the alternator diodes were bad the alternator should be too hot to keep your hand on it when the van is running. My 2nd check would be the battery cable to the starter to see if there is a break in the wire insulation or the accessory circuit on the ignition switch might be bad.
