Welcome to DroughtVille....Grumpy....wherein one can has barrels of heat and humidity...yesterday we got to 95F feeling like 110F...and see nothing come of it....BUT!! The weatherguessers are still calling for rain today...at 60% chance...Grumpy

Oh...and another piece of 'wonderful' news...my waist is now at 24"...at 138lbs....dang chemo aftershock....Surprise

Today?

Staying indoors, out of the heat and humidity we are seeing today...high of 85F feeling like 104F....and trying to get some more ballasting done for the new yard....

Morning Coffee and Muffin sandwich...
Posted by galaxy on Sunday, August 5, 2012 6:43 AM

GOOD MORNING!!!

Today is Sunday, August 5th, 2012!!!

August -- Augustus Caesar's month

Latin Augustus "Augustus"
Latin Augustus mensis "month of Augustus"
Latin sextilis mensis "sixth month"

Sextilis had 30 days, until Numa when it had 29 days, until Julius when it became 31 days long.

Augustus Caesar clarified and completed the calendar reform of Julius Caesar. In the process, he also renamed this month after himself.

Good Morning all,

First time dropping in the diner. What are the rules here?

83 degrees and sunny in Knoxville right now. Calling for 89 with chance of storms today.

Heading into Univ. of TN later with the gf while she does some of her geology research.

Trying to decide if I should rip up what I have started on my layout after the water leak or just start 2 new modules. Hmmmm. Hmm

Have a great day.

 Morning All,

08:00 and temp is 71 , calling for a high of 91 with thunder storms. Thunder storms here mean lightining, boomers a few drops of rain, and the high probaility of brush fires.

Got the battery charged on the Isuzu, I guess I will have to remember to start it it up once in a while.

Ken,     back in the mid 90's when I bought my Digitrax Big Boy, I converted all my bb 's to can motors and N.S. wheels, just this past month I installed a Tsunami in a GP 9 works fine I was just wondering about the tune up that I read some place. Thanks to Johnboy I now have it saved in my favorites. Enjoy running trains at K-10 Models.

The store is open from 1000 to 6oo on Sundays, so that is my shift today. The wife had a good day yesterday so I think I will be able to go in all day.

Prayers to one and all who need them.

Good Afternoon Gang,

it´s a rainy day today, so no outside "activity" at all. Still fighting with my mood - I may have one the first battle, but not the war yet.

A big and hearty welcome from the other side of the Big Pond, Rob II. Now that we have two of you, we have to introduce numbers Smile, Wink & Grin

Out of shear desperation, I started to draw locos with my track planning tool:

TeenSteamFan should be able to recognize this one. It´s a Stroudly LB&SCR A1 "Terrier", built in the 1870´s. It earned its nickname for the mature "bark" it had. It hauled commuter trains south of London until WW I. Nearly all were taken over by the Southern Railway in 1923 after 50 years of service. The last to be withdrawn from regular service was the "Hayling Billy" locos, serving the Havant to Hayling line. This was in 1963 - after 90 years of service! Quite a large number were preserved and can be watched on regular outings at the Bluebell Railway and others.

Have a good one!

I had a lot of catching up to do yesterday. Many pages to read on this and many other web sites. All because I got hit with a virus that just about completely took over my laptop last Sunday. Grrrrr.

Fortunately, I got very lucky Friday night and not only managed to salvage and back up some of my personal files, but I also managed to get rid of it. I really do despise these clowns and hope only the worst for them. So I'm back in business and all is right with the world again. For awhile though, I was sure a new laptop was going to be necessary.

We had a nice time today, even though it has been raining just about all day here in Pittsburgh. In fact, a pretty good thunderstorm with heavy rain just ended a little while ago. First we went to the last play of the Season at the Civic Light Opera. It was "The Addams Family." Some really good performances and very funny lines. Afterwards, we went out to dinner. I feasted on a salad, garlic mashed potatos, and a strip steak, while wife had her usual of baked sweet potato and baby back ribs. Life is good and I'm ready to start the new week in the morning. That is, after we have breakfast at our local diner.

Hope everyone had a nice weekend.   Tom

 Evening Dinners!

 Flo, Beer Pleases.

Chicken Wars My wife wanted me to BBQ tonight so I did. Went outside to start the grill, Chicken was sitting on top of a lawn chair. Hum, most of us know where a Chicken will sit, it will S%^&. Well, it was kinda cute (would look better in a KFC bucket) so I left it alone. Well, I chased it out of the yard.

Went back out, Chicken was standing of the safety net that goes around the pool. Then it started clucking at me like What are you doing here! Well that did it. Got out the trusty Bee Bee Gun. I have not used it for around 15 years. Went back out and the Chicken was on the other side of the yard, about 70 feet. Drew a bead on the Foul Bird and let the Bee Bee Fly. Direct hit on the birds butt! Big Smile Sure got it's Cluck'er in gear!

Still a pretty good shot, when I was in the Army I was a Expert with the rifle.

See you all later, time to Dinner

 Ken

Good evening.

Jeff ... Nice job (I think) of the F-unit. Perhaps it could be a prop for a Godzilla Invades Sundown movie where Godzilla sat on a locomotive. Whistling Your creativity is great!

Thanks everybody who commented on my situation. I just went back and read all I think. not sure I can ackwledge allm but thanks to Paul (NY), Ken, Lee, Curt, and each others. I could barely move around this weekend, but it will get better. I'm mentally planning more layout projects.

Regarding Atheran BB locos, my 3 Athearn Baldwin switchers in the steel mill are converted to DCC. Not having problems with them. I had help from a friend putting them together, and headlights work on both ends.

Rob of Knoxville .. Good to see you in the diner. hope to see you more often. Galaxy is good at explaining the Diner's rules and customs.

Galaxy ... I hope you did not mind my suggesting to Rob of Knoxville you explain the Diner.

Ray ... Good to see you starting to work on the historical stone building.

Barry .. I hope you health situation is okay now.

Ulrich ... I like the 0-6-0T steam photos you posted. Keep your spirits up! We care about you.

Darren ... The Alaska trip videos must be good, but I've not yet looked. Thanks for posting them.

Ken ... UP F's? Hope the chicken was good.

JimCG .... Saw your post, i did comment here about the operation. Since the doctor did not do everything, I can look forward to more adventures with surgery in the future. Hoping it can be postponed long time. I think I can feel okay for the time being.

Good night all.

Good Morning All,

68F with 73% humidity right now

I picked, cooked, and froze 3.5 gallons of rhubarb yesterday and did some needed yard work, including spreading the grub killer on the front lawn to keep the skunks from visiting my house this fall.  We did get some much needed rain Sunday morning.  Saturday and Sunday it was in the low 80’s but the humidity stayed right around 86% so it was tough to get too much done out in the yard.  I hope the weather stays cool long enough to get that 4x8 layout finished this month.  I have a display shelf for the layout room to build and a new stand for Dorothy’s snakes to get done before winter gets here.

Garry you can always catch up on those back issues of Model Railroader and Railroad Model Craftsman.  I have a ton of M-H-R, the online Model railroad magazine to catch up on some day.

Morning Coffee...
Posted by galaxy on Monday, August 6, 2012 7:14 AM

GOod morning.

I do't feel like my big flashy greeting today.

I don't know whether I had a blood pressure moment, a sugar moment or  a blonde moment {since I have a natural blonde streak among the hairs I have left}, but something didn't seem right last night.

Last night after dinner {which was at 8:30pm due to MOH working until 8} when I was coming out of the kitchen I felt like I was leaning to the left, and if i tried to "straighten up", I felt light headed. THen after sitting down, I leaned forward to get something and felt like I was gonna fall forward and was light headed again. Then I felt dizzy. I told MOH I didn't know what to say to do for me, whether to take me to hospital or call ambulance or what. It seemed to pass so we thought maybe sugar issue, since I WAS hungry an hour BEFORE MOH got home and while I was cooking dinner...

We went to bed later than usual as we were up til after 11 since MOH worked so late and is on second shift this week excetp one early morning  shift, so I may not be up as usual.

ANyway, I went to bed and slept all night until 7:45.this monring.

SO I feel OK, but don't feel totally with it..just kinda feel out of sorts. MAybe more so than I think? I have slaughtered words here trying to type them, more so than my usual dyslexic typing and fat fingered typing,, I can actaully see the mistakes I am making as they are worse than usual. Usually I don't "see" my mistakes as the words look "normal" to me.

Well, I will see as the day moves along. I DO take a blood pressure reducer and we have had no changes in my meds lately,s o I wouldn't think that an issue.

My sugar may be off again this AM...I have to go eat something. MY A1c is always JUST inside the paramenters for not being diabetic, so I DO have to watch that too.

WEll, I am off {One bubble to the left}.

We will see what happens today. I said that already didn't I?

HAve a great day!

Good morning, Diners.  I have been away from internet access for a few days.  We have been playing hard.  I am so sore from playing on the water with the nieces and nephews in their 20's, that I can hardly move.  Some of us never grow up.

Larry took 3 paintings to the fair.  One of them got Best in class ( amateur acrylics/oils ) and one got 3rd.  The third place  was his 2nd painting on canvas.

Garry,  Keep  healing.  There was a big echo in here while we were waiting to hear how you did.  This will be a good planning time for you.

We will be heading back up to play on  the water later today.

Good Morning!!!

”Ooooooooh.we’re not ones to go ‘round spreadin’ rumors. Why really we’re just not the gossipy kiiiiind.” Wonder why I got that song stuck in my head.

Coffee and egg foo yung please. Thanks.

K. Didn’t stop in yesterday cause I wanted to get a good start and it’s a good thing I did. Mr Murphy I kid you not, was riding my back. THREE count ‘em THREE trips to Menard’s for stupid stuff I either because I wasn’t thinking got the wrong thing or forgot I needed OR thought I had but didn’t. Anyway I did get the floor to where I wanted it to be yesterday just not early. Today I’ll grout where the toilet sits and then do the closet, then start a groutin’ the rest until I get tired or my knees start hurtin whichever comes first.

Ray- On Windows 7, don’t know if you’ve heard of it there in the land of fruit, if youdrag your curser to the lower right corner, the window, page, program, whatever it’s called goes away or minimizes (sorry I’m terrible with the correct terms) and displays what windows calls the desktop. Haven’t seen a good purpose for this because you can’t open another program cause as soon as you move the curser, you page opens back up again. I guess if you were looking at one thing and typing another, but as a rule that happens very few times I would figure. As it stands, every time I go to type when on this thing and I move my curser, the screen goes away and I get a good look at my desktop screen thing. Annoying.

Tennessee Rob- Galaxy will be in to list the details once he feels a bit better, but in a nutshell Lee summed it up. In the meantime,Welcome to the diner.

G- Hope you get the sugar lined up and feel better.

Garry- Glad you’re on the road to recovery.

Got some rain Saturday night/Sunday morning. Stormed about 2 am nothing severe. Rain gage said 1.4 inches. Unfortunately too little too late, but I’ll take it and be happy.

Today is continue on with the bathroom after the Church stuff AND just remembered, I’ll need to get toilet anchor bolts I didn’t get. They cut the old ones flush with the nuts and with the added height of the tile, they won’t reach. I knew this so why I didn’t pick some up before is anybodies guessBang Head.

Ya’ll have a good day!!!!

Good Afternoon Gang!

Seems as if I am making good progress on the road to regaining my sanity. I am keeping myself busy with drawing locos and track plans, which had helped me already two years ago. Staying in the doldrums is no fun, I can tell you. I can´t change the inevitable, so I stopped fighting it. None of us knows how long he/she will be around, so worrying about it does not make sense.

I´ll be heading to a not so local HS these days to sell my remaining Z scale stuff. Petra agrees, that this money will be for me and I am making plans to spend it on something not so usual. Part of it will have to go to finance our car´s technical inspection - that´s going to be some drain on the budget, though. I am sure I´ll have enough left to buy a steam loco kit:

I have always wanted to give my hands a try at building one of those brass kits. Surprisingly, they are not that expensive, not more than a decent HO scale plastic steamer w/DCC.  That should keep me busy and out of mischief at least for a year. Oh, yes, it is O gauge!

I am waiting for a reply of my labor administration counselor. I have asked them if they would pay an engineer´s training course for me. Such a course take 10 months to complete, but at the end, you´ve got a secure job, providing you pass the exam (and the physical). There are 15,000 jobs open for loco engineers in Germany! Well, let´s see ...

Have a great day!

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a breakfast bagel w/ cheese and a cup (or 3) of your Marrakesh Express dark roast certified organic coffee this morning.

Currently 68°F at 10 AM here in the Finger Lakes.  'Twas a great night for getting some sleep last night, too cold to open up the windows actually so I left one of the air conditioners running on "fan" to keep some air moving.  The high will be around 77°F later this afternoon.

Todd, I see THAT is a Wind-Blows thingie....  I guess it goes right along with some of the new BS Apple is including in  the Macs these days.  Touch the mouse wrong and you are immediately taken to someplace else where you have never been before and didn't want to visit.  There is probably some setting where you can turn it off.  At least there is on the Mac.  F3 does basically the same thing on the Mac these days......

It looks like I will mowing lawn again today for a bit.  Making up for lost time I guess.  We got a bit over a tenth of an inch here (probably closer to a half inch over at the museum yesterday).

Garry, glad you are recovering well.  Treat yourself to some time with the layout.  will make you feel even better!

Hoping to hear about the solar installation soon....  I would think all the paperwork would be approved by now.  I was going to have a big reunion here at my house for the old Fine and Practical Arts dept. retirees (and some still in the trenches) near the end of August, but it looks like it might be right at the time they would be doing the install, so I canceled out on it.  We hadn't notified anyone yet anyway so it wasn't really a big deal.

Guess I will get started with some needed things to do around here.

Later!

P&Slocal

First time dropping in the diner. What are the rules here?

~Rob

Rob, and other new members...first a big Welcome to the diner!

The rules are fairly simple:

This is a family site with younger members {kids} so keep that in mind!

You can talk about just about anything in here that may not be MRRing related where as all other threads and postings must be related to MRRIng or Railroading. Talk about the weather in your neck of the woods, your life and goings-on, and whatever is on your mind that isn't "forbidden" as below:

There is no profanity {not even squiggles %*& as we know what they mean} AS my mother used to say " you can find a better way to express yourself". No dirty or profane jokes either.

Avoid "flame war" topics like politics and religion, economy, etc.

What IS allowed as far as religion is to say a "prayer" or "special thoughts" of someone who is having a rough time medical wise {surgery, feeling bad, etc}, or who has a member of the family who is distressed or has passed. This is usually symbolized by the emoticon Angel I tend to keep the reverent "prayer candle" burning when there is problems for our members. If I am home the candle is actually lit and a prayer over it is said. If I have to go out, the prayer candle is "lit in thought" until I get back home to relight and say a new prayer. Many here DO believe in the power of prayer, and you don't have to be "religious" to say a prayer for someone who is having a hard time.

No Fighting with other members here..we all "agree to disagree" and avoid those inflamatory and  certain topics. This isn't the local Boxing Ring!

You can post pics, but our hosts prefer pics ONLY related to trains/MRRing and only one or two pics per posting, please. They will dump risque pics or extra pic heavy posts here.

If you get the top of a page posting you have to "buy" all the posters on that page's "meal orders". You can use a "credit card" if you don't have the "cash" for the tabs. ALWAYS remember to "tip" your "wait staff"!!! Adding A good 15% or more is recommended!

There is security in the back booth...you will meet him somewhere along the way..preferably in the "pleasantries" rather than be "ejected" for bad behavior!!! AS Jeffrey WImberly says "he can bend crowbars and tire irons with his bare hands" so keep that in mind!

If you mention someone's name, it is always nice for them to see it in a bolded font or highlighted in some way so people catch what you are saying to them {like I did here with your name and Jeffrey's}. You can bold it, change size, colorize it, etc to make it stand out. You can also quote someone like I did yours.

So, in short, watch your P's and Q's and you should be OK in here.

The user-mods are in here periodically and WILL remove or Edit any post NOT in sync with the wishes of our gracious hosts. There are two who are regular posters...Darren {Stourbridge Lion} and Ulrich {Sir Madog}.

So, again Welcome

Good morning. It's 83° and already feels like 91° out there. Humidity is 78%. There's a fair chance of rain. The high will be 95° with an index of 110° or higher.

The high temp for the rest of this week reads like a broken record with a chance of rain every day. Probably all we'll get is the heat.

Been to my doc appointment already. General checkup and getting stuck with needles. I'm in great shape for somebody with my problems so I guess that's something to be happy about.

Postal tracking says I should be getting a box of freight cars today. Can't wait to see what they are.

 Morning All

 Flo, Diet Dew Pleases.

Go into work today at 3:00 PM till close. Kind of glad, did not sleep well last night.

K 10 Open House. The Parking Lot Looked Like Christmas when I got there! Plenty of kids running around and running trains. Kind of funny to see Thomas The Tank Engine being chased by a Big Boy. Meet up with Simon and his sons. Simon was busy installing a decoder for a customer. They was a wait to get a throttle so you could run a train.

Train Front One of my MRC F7a is starting to make a odd racket. Sounds like a metal part is vibrating against another metal part. I am thinking the motor may have shifted and is hitting the chassis. I hope that is all it is. So I have side lined the pair till I get around to looking into it.

Moved my CSX GE AC 6000 over to the B line to handle the hauling. I have never ran it on the B line before because of the tighter turns. It is perfectly happy there, no picking.

Been running my BLI Hudson last couple of days. Just one section I have to keep the speed down so it does not pick a turnout.

Gary Glad to see you posting again. Looking forward to the next batch of photos of the coming project.

Ulrich Hum O scale? Well building a kit will keep you busy for sometime.

Jeffery F slug looks pretty good. Weren't all F B unit's slugs anyway? Still a neat little project.

Well, time to open some shells and do a little oiling.

No. The F B units had everything the A units did EXCEPT a cab. A B unit could be controlled individually via a control panel with the operator looking out one of the portholes. A slug can't be moved individually as it has no prime mover, only traction motors. It's electrical power comes from a locomotive (called the mother) coupled to it. Most slugs don't have controls of any kind. Some have a control panel so that the mother/slug consist could be controlled from either end. These are few and far between.

Ulrich, I understand Germany still has an impressive fleet of ten wheeler, triple piston steam engines as well.  Good luck on getting accepted to the engineer training.

I think the O and G scales were developed by watching people look at the price tag of the locomotives and rolling stock.  “Oh my” and “Gosh!” must be popular remarks, I know they were when I saw the prices….
