Morning everyone!

Zoe I'll have bowl of cherry granola cereal and a cup of dark roast coffee.  Thank you Ma'am!

Just stopping in to see how everyone is this morning before I head out to my son's house and my favorite little 5 year old's Birthday Party.

It will be hot but not unbearable here in the Finger Lakes here today.  Currently 73°F with a high in the low 80's this afternoon.  Humidity will be hovering around 50% and there is a nice breeze.

Will catch you all this evening for a bit!

Morning guys

Been trying again with those Fs and the fragile bits. I'm down to 10 left, so I'm saving them for whenever I get a drill press. I got annoyed by breaking bits so I decided to use filler on that GP5. So far I'm not a fan of the squadron putty. It's really coarse and can't be spread like the auto body filler I've been using. Guess I'll see how it works after sanding it.

Ken, Great, I drink a lot too... Some of my meds make me really thirsty though. I think it would take longer than a week for the snake to start rotting... By the way, when do you think you'll be able to send the package? If you got it out today, I might be able to get it by the middle of the week.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Just stopped by to show something someone posted somewhere else. Thought maybe Ray and Tom might enjoy it if they haven't already seen it.

Too bad they're retired now, could be something to have in the classroom.

Good Afternoon Gang,

Just as a write this, we are in the midst of a terrible thunderstorm. St. Peter must have opened the flood gates - I hope we don´t get drowned Surprise

Galaxy - I am sorry to read about Munchie´s passing. It is hard to lose those furry companions. A  Angel for you and YOH!

I went to my friend´s place this afternoon and took some more pictures of his "other" model building activities:

Nice little ships, ain´t they?

Have a good one!

Galaxy:    I'm sorry to hear about your cat.  It's a very hard thing to do.  Your story brought back memories of when we had to have our third cat put down in January.  She had a widespread and aggressive cancer and had stopped eating.  I couldn't go to the vet's, my wife had to take her.  Thinking about it still brings tears to my eyes.  We become very attached to those little creatures, be they cats or dogs.  They give us unconditional love and ask nothing in return more than a warm home and good food.  Sorry, Im getting emotional here.

Morning everyone.

Well, it was supposed to be a high of 94 yesterday, it got to 103.  Today is expected to be between 103 and 105.  It's not quite noon yet around here and it's already 95, so it's going to be a SCORCHER!

Vince:  After yesterday's temperature, I take it all back about the heat not affecting me as it used to, LOL!

Todd:  That poster on music sums it up to a fare-thee-well.  You're right, I wish I'd had it hanging in the choral room when I was teaching.  Not for the students as much as some of the other teachers that kept insisting that I was teaching an "Easy 'A' class."    I remember one teacher joking that the choir was for all the guys that didn't want to take PE, until I told her that our bass section was practically the entire school's prize-winning Rugby team.   Shut her up GOOD it did, LOL!

Galaxy:  I'm so sorry to hear about Munchie.  It's losing a family member, and believe me I know.  I don't know if this helps or  not, but you might consider getting another cat in a month or two after you've stopped the mourning process.  I did that when I lost Lowell--got a 'rescue' cat and ended up with a terrific feline, Uff-Dah the Viking.  He didn't 'replace' Lowell by any means, but he's turned out to be such a loveable goofball in his own right.  Cats are great--no two are EVER alike.  If this helps at all, I'm sure that right now Lowell is showing Munchie the ropes up there in Kitty Heaven ("Now up here, we don't eat mice, we just play with them.  They're our 'entertaiment'.").

Speaking of cats, I took Chester, the newest addition, to the vets yesterday to have his blood sugar tested, and had the vet run an FIV test to see if he could join the general population in the rest of the house.  Unfortunately he's turned out to be FIV positive.  So I have to wait a month and have him re-tested.  Another month on my lap in the computer room.  The vet said that FIV is not the 'death sentence' that used to be thought of, and is only transmittable between cats by biting--direct saliva to blood infection, and that Chester is a 'carrier', and not infected with the virus itself.  But it's still going to be another month and another test to see what happens, because occasionally the test will show a 'false positive'.

Looks like no time today out in the garage working on the layout, what with the temperature, the air quality and my COPD.  Rats!  Sad  I'd head up to the mountains this weekend, but the fire danger is so high that most of my  favorite campgrounds are being closed by the Forest Service  (don't blame them at all!).   Guess I'll find some kind of kitchen table project so Uff-Dah and Spooky can steal parts while Dad tinkers.  Should be entertaining.

Best to all, prayers to those in need.

Afternoon Tea ..June 2012

Hi

We went out for an "outing". MOH had to get out  and do anything to get mind off Munchie. MOH said "munchie would say "go"".

Thank you for all the condolences.

We DO have another cat, but he is very aloof towards us. He doesn't greet us at the door like munchie did. He doesn't beg for or even eat human food like Munchie did, so no sharing a small plate for him. Munchie adored every bit of the human foods she loved when we gave them rto her, doing  a dance and singing  a verbal "meow" for her dinner. He is very private and nwo he knows these things: 1] we brought out those nasty cat-carrys, 2} we took Munchie off 3} we tried to cram him in one {and failed} 4} Munchie has not come home and we are "At fault". SO: in conclusion: RIght now, we are almost "enemy #1". He is guarded around us and not letting us get into ANY position to pick him up!

Cuddles {his name- big orange long haired fluffy asian mix- don;t let his name fool you} ANd Munchie BOTH were/are not lap cats...niether liked to be held at all. They would/do lie next to you, behind onthe back of the chair, on the arm of chair or couch, and beside us in bed, but NOT in the lap and NOT held.

We most likely won't replace Munchie. We decided a while ago unless we get really lonely, we won't replace them. We woudl like to have more freedom to go where we want to when we want to and may hopefully move to a house sometime. WE would also like to retire out of the area. someday. For those reasons we don't wnat to disrupt a pet's life. BOht cats were indoors only cats.

Thnaks again for all who sendsent/will send condolences. We really appreciate tehm.

 Afternoon Folks

 Flo, Beer Pleases.

Well today was almost a complete waste. Running trains is all the energy I have had. Did stop by K-10 and found a stanch of old PK 1000 engines. Put 3 on hold, I think someone here at the dinner likes PPR. Whistling

Man, hang on. I just saw I am missing part of a train! Bang Head Foot steps, belch sitting down sounds. OK that fixed for now.

Vincent Sorry I felt so useless today. I will have the stuff out Monday.

Jeremy I saw the post, was a little to much rapped up in other problems at the time. Sure did not smell like anything dead. But I never smelled rotting snake before either!

Pretty much felt like this today.

Feel like I am waiting for the Big Hook.

Hello everybody ...

It's been hectic in recent days, but I have briefly looked though the Diner. I'm glad it keeps busy here.

Cal Tom ... I'm glad to see you posting here again. Sounds like it is hot in CA.

Galaxy ... I'm very glad you are back. We need the prayer candle guy. Sorry to lear about your pet.

Ken ... Nice photos, espeically Chicago Union Station in its prime. If you look at the Burlington E-units, you can see some had stainless steel sides and some ahd painted sides. They started changing to stainless steel sides, but never completed all E units.

Ray ... Nice photos from you too.

Sue ... I like Larry's painting you posted last week. ... I just put decoders in my NP F-9's for the North Coast Limited, and am running that train.

Ulrich ... I like your recent video's and pictures. Only 50 yards from the tracks. That would be great. I grew up almost that close to the old CB&Q Railroad near Chicago.

Chris ... Interesting photos in Iowa. I recall dirty C&NW GP7's like the one you posted.

Duke ....  Good to see you.

Bill T ... I think your old pictures are inspiring for modeling. The old diner is a neat one.

Cheers, everybody.

Evening guys

I feel accomplished today. I got the exhaust on my car tightened up and now it idles correctly with the A/C on. I also took some time and re-aligned the passenger door (the one I replaced about 15 months ago). It was a little bit too far foward (and after going over a certain speed bump in to) it would hit the fender. I could have adjusted the plates where it mounts to the frame, but I'd have to take the fender off to do that. Instead I stuck some washers between the hinge and the door and viola, nice and even (of course after a bit of fiddling to get it to line up in the other 2 directions). I also moved the door latch so it closes without having to slam it. I was stumped that the door was lining up with the fender and asked my father to look at it. He just beat the fender a few times and said "Tada" when it was evened out. Guess sometimes hitting something will fix it...

As far as trains are concerned, I'm down to 10 of my #80 bits.... I decided to work on the GP5 and got the nose and cab some body filler. The cab went fairly smoothly but the nose is a bit trickier. The steps broke off so I cut a groove into the nose and insterted the steps into the nose groove and glued it. I'll be cutting most of it off later when I get the Cannon steps. The nose still has some rough spots but I'll address them tomorrow after work. The long hood gets no modifications, but the sill will have to be notched out for the modern style cut levers.

Tom, lol. Are your mallets as affected by the heat. I'd imagine a garage layout wouldn't work to well in florida with it's heat and humidity.

Ken, Okay. That works because it should get here by friday if you do get it out monday.

Afternoon, Janie - sheesh! It's a scorcher out there, temp before I headed over here said 92 F/33 C (with the 'feels like' temp a couple of degrees higher than that (on either scale...). I will have a double RBF, please, and if you have one of those -pre-iced mugs, that'd be even better. Thank you!

Ken, hope your feet are still holding up okay. Actually, after Todd wrote, I was sorta 'hearing' in my mind what a "dulled belch" sounded like... Is that sorta like when you go to belch and you swallow it (but it feels like the belch is still coming out your nostrils)? (Sorry for any mental images there...). Hey, good to hear the Miss Shaddy is feeling more like herself again. Is she eating as much as before? (Oh, she just barked her answer!) (And as for the smell last week? "Told ya so.") Smile, Wink & Grin Maybe a good box fan would be in order for the Snake Room?

blownout cylinder

I never said Brass Brass Brass.....Whistling

Yeah, sure, Barry. (How about Bronze, bronze, bronze?) Smile, Wink & Grin And not that you might be counting or anything, but how many more treatments in this current round? Or will they decide once they see you on Monday? Keep pluggin' away there. Yeah... Oh, thanks, now I have THAT song stuck in my head (and every time they run the catfood commercial on TV...Bang Head)

NS Joe, I see you about wore yourself out at your graduation doings.  What's on the calendar for your summer? Best wishes on it, and on your start to college in the fall!

Ulrich, I'm sure Chris is glad you were able to point out what he has to look forward to, in another decade or two.. (heh, heh,,,) And the video was worth all the effort it took you to get it converted and uploaded. Thumbs Up

Todd, ya gotta remember that that bag of burgers that Chris carries, is for his dog, Rerun (which may not mean that Chris never deducts a 'delivery charge', but we won't mention that too loud, don't want Rerun to get miffed with Chris...)Smile, Wink & Grin Hey, on that 'art' cart (or music cart), the one I had, came from a local company who made the carts - for (I think) hospitals or nursing homes to take meds around.

Curt - thanks for the photo of the weathering on your turntable (have filed that away for when I get ready to install and setup mine...) You have been doing very well on your layout progress! Bow Hey, with all those meds, you ought to be feeling pretty good! Whistling

Darren, that is one doozy of a fire, and I'm sure most of Colorado would love for it to be over and long gone. AngelAngel for those whose homes have been damaged/ruined. This morning, I hear the total was up to a total of 112 homes burned up by that firestorm. I heard that part of the difficulties they are facing with the fires is that the tankers are pretty old (plus, there aren't enough of them - glad our NOTB friends are sending some down to help, Johnboy!)

Jeff, when you said about teaching your router astrophysics, is that a nice way of saying you almost sent the thing into orbit? Wink Hope you get something else that would do the job for your netw**k. I have used a Belkin (mostly because Linksys doesn't support or play well with Macs) and liked how it w**ked - I could easily 'browse' to it to change settings.

Galaxy, good great to see you in the Diner again (yeah, I worried some, too) (and, I liked hearing your news - along with others'), and will be saying AngelAngel for the families of the two teens. Awful to hear that news, as well as about your/OH's cat. 12 (or 14) years is quite a long time. Sorry to hear about Munchie's passing, and AngelAngel for you and YOH (and the male cat) as you all are missing her.

Chris, why worry about whether your layout photos look good (or not)? I don't! Smile, Wink & Grin (Hmmm, maybe I should restate that...) Glad you're getting a little more progress on your Plywood Prairie RR. Wink Those cardboard mockups can help figure out the spacing of things; I know DerJohn used them a fair bit in the process of building his layout. And I'm with you about age being only a matter in our minds. So, I take it that you aren't paid by the word/paragraph by THAT editor? Wink Hey, I think I recall some (waaaayyyy back) pics of that train room that you posted at some time in the past, didn't you?

BridgeTom, keep us posted on whether Chester gets out of 'quarantine' to play with Uff-Dah and Spooky (who-must-be-obeyed-queen-and-ruler-of-the-house).

TSF. Good to see you in the Diner again - and best wishes on a smooth running for your club's display. Yeah

Huh? Hey, Duke woke up! Hi Duke! Wink

About time for me to get moving. Prayers will continue for those needing comfort, healing, and/or more tolerable weather.

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape G.

Afternoon folks!

Chloe just another refill on the iced tea please....

Speaking of teakettles.....

Party out at my son's house was fun....  Lots of kids, lots to eat, lots of presents for her to unwrap, and lots of good chit chat within the family.

Todd, Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up!  I actually had a few similar signs (not exactly the same) hanging in my room at the Middle School.  Yep music is all those things...  I liked to add one about Music is History and Culture....  On the math one, did you know (I bet Tom does) that ancient Greek notation was done with numbers.  The relationship/ratios, etc showed the performer what was to come next, and constitutes one of the earliest forms of musical notation.  Some believe there is a direct link between the old Greek system and the "Figured Bass" used by J. S. Bach and others back in the Baroque Period.  The work of the Mathematician Pythagoras was the first to give the ratios of the harmonics produced by a string (using ratios).  He also, for all practical purposes, gave us the 12 tone chromatic scale based on the interval of a 5th.  You do remember the circle of 5ths. now don't you?

Way back when I taught in Waverly, NY I made a portable board where the students could make up rhythms and then the class had to correctly clap them.  For each beat there were 4 different possible things they could do.  You could have a quarter rest, a quarter note, two eighth notes, or 4 sixteenth notes.  One day one of the 5th. graders asked me how many different rhythms we could make with the four measures of 4/4 time on the board.  I said I didn't know, so we decided to figure it out.....  Hang on to your safety railings now....  It comes out to 4 (four different possibilities in each beat) to the 16th. power (16 beats in four measures).  Answer? 4,294,967,296!

Plato said it best, "Music is pure mathematics".  Thanks for sharing that Todd!

Galaxy, I've been giving my two kitties a few more hugs yesterday and today just being thankful they are still healthy.  It is good that so many of us here share both the greatest hobby on earth and the love of those wonderful pets we have.  One of my kitties is the type that climbs up on my lap climbs to my shoulder, then rolls over like a baby and likes to held in my arms upside down.  The other is not a lap kitty, but does like to sit beside me and be petted.  They are both very loving......  Hope your "other" kitty forgives you both soon!

Hope you are all having a great day!

Well my father called a while ago and said he had a watermelon to cut up. So I had to put in an appearance to eat my share. An eightieth of a watermelon later and I had had all I wanted. My sister asked how I would handle a hornet nest. I said 'AI'. AI? Artificial Intelligence? No, Avoid It. Pouring a bucket of scalding hot water down into it can help too. Wasp spray can work wonders on it.

My problem FP7 quit running today for some reason. I opened it up and that a wire had come loose from the motor. I wonder if that was because of a poor solder joint or was it that hot. That chincy little motor gets so hot you can cook bacon and eggs on it. I soldered the wire back in place and the loco is running again. It still has that annoying hum which I'm sure is from the gears. The sight of red gears set off all kinds of alarm bells because of the cheap Mexican made Con-Cor drives back in the late 80's and early 90's that hummed, screamed and squealed, same time period this loco was released.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! Grumpy Window blind shopping. Why did I volunteer to go alongBang Head. Oh yes, food.

Suki the waitress, after I helped her clear the table (Oh, think you verymuch) did wish me a happy Fathers Day since I "poby woh be heah tuhmahrow" I said well thank you and she said "welcome". Then she said "why you not ditch the broad and we go out on the town after work" I don't remember much after the searing pain to my head.

Big news.....Ryan's (restaurant) is closed. Signs down and everything. Funny yesterday around noon I drove past and everything was normal. Full parking lot and a bus. They did the same thing with the Old Country Buffet several years ago. One day the employees showed up to a sign on the door. Managers and all. They are both owned by the same corp. Talk about unsure from day to day if you have a job.

Ray and Tom- Thought you guys would like that. Glad you did.

Welp Brenda has finished "restoring the color in her hair" and it's about time for us to head uptown for our Saturday night out with the gang at the local watering hole. Should be back about ten-ish. Hmm To think not too many years ago, I was leaving about the time i'm coming home now. Before long, I'll not and just say I did.

EDIT: Um, that crack about ditching the wife might not have been exactly true.Whistling Embarrassed

Morning All,

Getting ready to walk out the door for work. When I got up this morning I remembered that I had to give blood and get a chest X--ray. No food or coffee this morning.

Happy Fathers Day

I will probably talk to you tomorrow.

Going to be a quiet day today with Audrey and the little Spring...no visitors cropping up..so I get to run my choo choos for another dayMischiefWhistling

HAPPY FATHER’s Day,

I have a new project layout; my neighbor wants to build a 4x8 HO-Scale layout for his great grandson’s birthday that focuses on coal and passenger service.  No clue what track plan I’m going to use yet.

Good morning, Chloe.  I will have a large black coffee.  I think that I will sit in this back booth.  Let's see who shows up.

Heartland Division CB&Q

Sue ... I like Larry's painting you posted last week. ... I just put decoders in my NP F-9's for the North Coast Limited, and am running that train.

Garry,  Larry says, "Thanks."  I am not familiar with F-9's.  Are they similar to F-7's?  Did you put sound decoders in?  I am waiting for a photo.Question

The only reliable spotting difference between a late phase 2 F7 and an F9 is a vent located between the cab door and the first porthole. there are other differences but those are all internal.

Happy Father's Day!

Good morning. It's 74° and partly. The high will be 92°. There's a 20% chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms this afternoon.

Cleanup on the layout continues. It's just picking up an item from here, another item there but it's progress. I can see the gravel surface of Labicht Drive again! Wonder how long that'll last. I'll be keeping an eye on my problem FP7 today. I soldered a wire back onto the motor yesterday. Whether it's coming loose was due to a bad solder joint or heat in the connection I don't know. If it comes loose again I'll know it's due to some insane heat buildup in the connection. I'd think that kind of heat would destroy the motor but I've seen stranger things. The next time I have the loco opened up I need to take measurements of the motor and see if I have another one I can shoe horn in there. I'm going to run the existing one until it fails.

Happy F(e)athers Day!

Ours was about 3 weeks ago, on Ascension Day....

The weather is playing roller coaster gain, within minutes we have the whole lot from glistening sunshine to torrential rain. As we are approaching Midsommar (for the Sweidish among you), this is not the correct weather.

Christian, our son, just called in. He has a notebook for Petra, so we don´t have to fight about computer time any longer. Isn´t he sweet.? I can just see Petra in our living room, the notebook on her lap, chatting and texting, while I am in my "office/trainroom", moderating the forum Smile, Wink & Grin. It is good that there is little troll activity these days.

Nothing planned for the rest of the day. I may be running a few trains over my layout, just to keep the dust and grime off the rails.

Have a good one!

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and the Sunday breakfast buffet please. Thanks. We’re down to one regular buffet and that's the Golden Corral cleeeeear on the other side of Springfield. The others are Chinese. Asian.

Mostly sunny, with a high near 87.

Happy Fathers day to those so blessed. Congrats to those not.  (WHAM!~!!!) Oh Zoe I’m just kidding. (shakes head) I get the same reaction from my wife. After 47,000 years together and the same Fathers day comments, you’d think by now she’d know I’m kidding. Oh who am I kidding. After being with her for all these years, she still doesn’t even know I have a sense of humor it seemsConfused.

Lee- Ooo! Get to build a MR layout without a cash layout. What a great Fathers Day gift!!!

Speaking of which, Brenda finally gave me something usefulSurprise. A swift kick to the seat of the pants. LaughNo not really. Aaaah I shouldn’t really say that. It gives the impression she never has given me anything I like, which is not true. Mostly true yes, but not totally. No weird pants, no shirts I won’t wear, no trinket she bought for me to shove in a drawer or corner thinking “she has to know I wouldn’t like that”Grumpy. I tell you what, our stereotypical rolls when it comes to gift giving are reversed. Anyway, she noticed  wash my new truck a lot down at the carwash since we got one. So, she bought me a carwash credit card. Yup. Put money on it and use it like cash. Best thing is the owner said come to him when we want to put money on it and instead of full price or even the business 30% discount, because we do so much for the community (mainly her) he’ll give us 40%Thumbs Up. Since it's a political year and percentages being what they are I could juggle and tilt the figures to say that's half price and prove it. Taking into consideration the "margin for error" Wink  Helps when the guy who owns the carwash is also the Mayor. Oops, sorry. We don’t have a “Mayor”. We have a “Village President”. But most everyone calls him Mayor. The last one used to always correct you in a rather um, subtle yet……arrogant way. “That’s Village President

Best get doin the things I was gonna do yesterday before the trip into town reared it’s vicious head. You know it isn’t the shopping for blinds that gets me, it’s how the shopping for blinds gets turned into the leisure stroll around every store general shopping without a purpose shopping trip that gets me.

Ya’ll have a good day!!!!

Happy Father's day, one and all - Todd

Happy Fathers day to those so blessed.
...I think that includes everyone - otherwise, they must be clones!Mischief

I though I'd better put in an appearance before too many more weeks roll into months. Yard work (not mrr Super Angry) and museum work have kept me out of the loop. The museum work has included (and continues to include) many hours on a 1:700 scale WWII Royal Navy destroyer. I'm getting through the construction if this Resin and photo-etched brass kit - but it hasn't been easy! I'll post some pics here - the 5 and 7/16ths inches of this model represent 317 and a whisker feet in the prototype:

Closer _ fortunately the naked eye can't see all these imperfections - I had to brush paint after the initial spray with rattle-can primer.

There's a bunch more detail added since I took those back on June 4th - I'll show you those when the thing is ready to be mounted on a base.

We'll better get back to it - before Kris takes me out to Sheet Harbour's more up-scale (no pun intended or otherwise Clown) restaurant for a late lunch.

Jeff: How do you remember all that detail stuff on loco type differences?Bow
