Coffee refill, please. Need to keep the inner boiler stoked.

***Lee, it never rained frogs here (that I know of) but still every so often I find something new from that one tornado. Last notable item was a little kids stuffed Toucan. Loved the movie Das Boot.

***Ulrich, enjoying your videos. Well done!

Cheers! Cowboy Rob

Ulrich: I like the way you did the videos. They look larger than N Scale. Well done.

Goooooooooooooooooooooooooood afternoon, bag 'o burgers to go please and thank-you. I have to head out for a City Council meeting this evening in Tiffin here pretty soon. Yip yip yahoo.

VINCENT: I tend to put on as many of the details (grab irons, lift rings, coupler lift bars, etc.) as possible before priming/painting, THAT way I don't have to worry about glue mucking up the paint job.

Then it's just a matter of minor touch-up painting, such as the MU hoses and other various little bits.

I still had to paint the strobe beacon transparent orange when I took this shot.

Glad to see progress on the F-units, keep 'em coming!

ULRICH: Glad to see your RR up and running! Every darned time though, it makes me want to do a CB&Q branch in SW Iowa...  And, I thought I saw a U-boat in THAT picture. Chasing ducks? I love it! Around here, THAT'd probably bring out a SWAT unit, especially with launching torpedoes.

Big news in the RR room: A few weeks ago, The Loving Wife purchased the necessary plywood for RERUN's railroad, and three of the four sheets have been fastened in-place. For some reason, she felt the need to buy something to commemorate my 43 years on this planet. Already, things THAT looked problematic on paper are proving to be so in reality. I lined up six grain hoppers and a locomotive, where the Chicago Central yard will be...and yup, THAT pretty much takes up the full length. I don't know why it looked bigger in a scale drawing, how I mucked THAT up....but at the very least it means while I can still have the correct number of tracks in the yard, and have 'em arranged like the prototype, they'll be a lot shorter. I'll have maybe 1/5th the length, I was hoping for closer to 1/2. Now, if'n I'd gone to N-sane scale, I'd have half the length. Z-scale? I'd probably get the full length in. Half-Z scale? I'd also be able to model the east end with it's split to the former WCF&N yard, the wye to the ICG main and the National Oats branch, AND the line south to the former Milwaukee Road yard.

Of course, if'n I had the space of say...a B-52 hanger, I'd be able to do the full 4th St. corridor from North Yard to Cargill on the river in HO for sure, maybe even in O.

Alas....much cogitation is taking place.

Why didn't I just take up stamp collecting??

Take care everybody, thoughts and prayers continue for all in need, and question marks remain about what has become of GALAXY...

Chris

Evening guys

I'm at college right now, kind of waiting on the instructor to go over something. My car has been acting up as of late. When it tries to idle it just quits, most of the time, but it doesn't do it when it's warmed up. I've played with the thottle stop screw and made it better, but then the computer tries to revert it back to quiting.  I'm thinking the mass air meter (computer stuff) doesn't agree with the computer and the chip my father wrote. I have extra meters to try, but it'll take playing with the computer and the chip. I may wind up having a new engine by the time summer is over though (mines a little under 222K, and IDK what it is really)

I managed to aquire a custom-painted and detailed BN SD7 off of ebay. It's supposed to represent one of the ex-GN SD7s. I'll probably stick it with my 2 ex-Q SD9s. I also got the paint off of the GP5. Strange that the sill and nose were molded in black plastic, but the long hood is grey. I'll wind up shiming the nose tomorrow, and probably try to hunt down the cannon steps for a P2K GP7/9.

Chris, I made some more progress since I took thos pics. I've asked around on other forums, and others have suggested priming before and after adding the detail parts; then painting afterwards.I'm just curious how well detail parts will stick to the primer when using CA. I'll try it after work tomorrow, provided the weather cooperates.  The tricky part for me on painting the Fs will be masking where the black goes around the cab front. It looks like the black continues around all the way; but in the middle pillar it stops at the nose. Other than that, it seems pretty straight foward with no grabs in the way of masking. As for N and Z, there is T-scale. You could probably model all of Cedar Rapids and then some in a basement with that.

Todd, It would seem that both you and Chris would be right. Prime before and after adding detail parts. That's good for me because I still have to order them, and some of them require a lot of cutting. I have to cut the pilots off of 2 of them, so it'll be fun figure out how to make couplers work.

Curt, Technically it's 3 F9s (ABA) and 2 F7s (AB, but the B looks like an F3) at this point. When the stuff from Ken gets here it'll be a full 8-units. What the final products will be depends on whatever I get in a trade with a friend (he wants the ATSF F9 shells, he has undecs I want to use)

Ken, Let me know when you send the package. My workbench/shop (and a friend who wants the ATSF F9 shells) awaits it's next victims Mischief

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Evening All,

Just finished spaghetti for supper and had a cup of decaf afterwords. I finished weathering the TT pit today and I made 3 more train orders so I have 5 now. I think I want to make around 15-20 scenarios so that when I don't want to just do roundy-round I have something preplanned.

The printer is getting the best of me and MOH. We just can't find the jam. Time to throw it against the wallLaugh

Lee- I ordered the book today and look forward to reading it.

Chris- Thats great that YOH has got you started on your next layout. Of course we will  need photos of your progress. Something that I noticed was that no matter how much space you have it is not enoughWhistling.

Everyone have a great night and prayers or those in need.

Ev'ning, Chloe, I'll have a hot fudge sundae please, and a Santa Fe mug of decaf. Thanks!

Ray, I didn't ride the "short bus", as far as that goes. Smile, Wink & Grin But more than that kind of special was that I was an elementary art teacher (most of my teaching years), and that (being a male) meant I was definitely in the minority in most of the classroom buildings, with the majority of the teachers being females (about all married and almost my mother's age). Then there was the one year that I got paid mileage by the school district I w**ked in. Went like this on my Tuesdays and Thursdays that year: Started with a couple/three classes at one elementary building (the one where my closet of art supplies were kept), go to the morning kindergarden classes (held in a former Catholic school building that the district rented (I think)), then on to the newer elementary building for some of the fifth grade classes (the resident art teacher in the building covered most of the grades, and I helped the ones she couldn't get to in the week), and then lunch there. After that, I went back to the afternoon kindergardens (backtracking to the same building as the morning classes), and then back to my starting elementary building from the morning, and another couple/three elementary classes there (I think all of the ones in that building were first through third grade). Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I had the rest of the classes in that same elementary building. The classes were fun, mostly (dealing with the admininstrators? Maybe another matter...). If I hadn't had to deal with the higher-ups and a schedule that changed from year to year (and this was back before schools started cutting back), I might have retired from teaching by now. Of course, another reason I got out of teaching was that a chance to open a prof. photography studio came up (whole 'nuther story there, I'll maybe get to it another time...). Loved w**king with the elementary kids - and I had one of those welded aluminum?/metal carts with 2-3 shelves and the  rollers, on which I hauled my paper, paint, other supplies from room to room. The kids referred to it as my "art cart". Wink

I am pretty much a happy camper again. Smile I think I have my glitch with getting to the credit union's online banking site figured out and (mostly) done. Hooked up a cloned external drive (from about a week before the problems began) to my MBP (latptop) and restored the settings (but it turned out it also replaced my documents folder, etc. (and put the more recent documents folder aside in a "Deleted Users" folder. So once the program was done with the restore, I moved the contents of each folder into the corresponding 'new' folder (Documents, Downloads, etc.). Have tried it, and I am once again able to check on my account balances, do transfers between checking and savings (or vice versa), etc.

Hey, Vincent - a Diner with ingenuity and creativity (almost like Jeff does at the Sundown shops)! That was a good idea (hopefully, I will be able to use that tip later on if I'm out of the right thickness on a project of mine).Thumbs Up

Garry, that's one messy deck there - hopefully, you didn't have too many other trees (besides the one that the eagles nested in...) to clean up around your yard.

Todd, maybe you won't ruin your resolution if you just go into Toddland and stand and think about what you want to do next in there. How about that? Probably shouldn't interfere with Brenda's HD list too much...Wink And we aren't even going to talk about where I'm gonna fit that Walthers movie theatre kit that I got about a week and a half ago... Hmmm... Huh?

Curt (or Todd), I haven't really thought about where that little building will be going. Actually, now that I got a magnetic gluing rig again, I need to locate the zip-bag that has the walls and other pieces for the church building I wanted to build. (I'm still waiting for that original one I had to show up, since I know that's the way it usually w**ks when I replace something that went missing), As Todd mentioned, it's more like "Where the heck am I going to fit all these buildings?" crossing my mind fairly often. Oops

Oh, Todd? Ignore that voice behind the curtain that keeps repeating "Brass, Brass, BRASS"...Whistling

Hey, Jeff, I like your 1:1 railroad photos that you've been posting. Yeah

Lee, did those toads have their green cards with them?...(That is pretty weird, though)

Chris, did you paint your first loco in the photos with copper/bronze paint? That almost looks like a (wait for it...) Brass loco! Smile, Wink & Grin And a very belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Cake That scene with your switcher wouldn't take lots of room (for what is in the photo, anyway...), since you could use flats for some/all of the buildings in the background (selectively compressed, of course). And since you said it's Rerun's layout, better run your ideas on THAT past him, y'know. Wink

Barry, will be keeping you in mind (and AngelAngel) tomorrow.

Day after tomorrow will by laundry day, and then two solid days of (oh, frapture!) on-call, followed by Monday evening on-call. But then. it's my six days off (unless you count the presentation I have to give to a local law enforcement dept. on next Wednesday). Garry, check your e's, please.

Almost time for me to head for home (and still no sign of Galaxy). G, we miss ya - phone home!Alien

Blessings and prayers, and a candle lit,

Jim in Cape G.

 Evening Folks!

 Flo, a Beer Please.

Work Front Well if Pain In The Feet Is Good, I am in great shape! I don't know if the med's I am on is causing it or the fact I stayed off of them for 4 days. Both feet burn like heck and it feels like the 4th of July fireworks are going off in them!

Infected Toe Front While it still looks gross, it does look better. Open hole is starting to close, but toe nail is starting to look white?

VA Medical Care Benefits. Well seems mine have expired and I have to do a 10-10EZR to get them started again. Hope to get that done Friday when I am off again.

Todd You never need to worry when you find a funny spelling error I have made. Dulled Belch is pretty funny.

Ulrich Glad you are posting again and found a cheap way to enjoy the hobby.

 Well I am beat.

Evenin"!

Janie just a decaf.

Jim, the Art teacher and the cart routine, eh?  My sister did THAT for the first 2 or 3 years she taught Elementary Art.  She vowed never again did she ever want to see a cart with art supplies on it!!!  I did that for Elementary music classes for a couple years near the end of my career in a couple buildings here in Geneva.  One principal took a good look at what I had to do and found me a place in the front of the auditorium, he finally found half a room that was crowded but would work.  I had the room in the morning, and a part time remedial teacher had it in the afternoons.  The other building I stayed on the cart.  That was actually fun at times as some of the teachers would give up part of their break period and stick around to participate in the class....  I guess I had a good following in the building.  I taught k-college at various times in my career.  You know what?  I loved Elementary the best!

Pssst!  What are all the Brass doing in here?  Looks like a management convention or something...  Oh, their with Barry!  Hey Barry!  Good luck the the treatments!

Time to head out for the night.  Nite guys!

Evening all!

Sorry for being out for the past week or so; I've been regrouping after graduation and such.

Graduation was good. Not too much to say about that. Project graduation (basically a giant party the night after graduation for the entire grade) was a blast! We went to Funplex, this... place... (not sure how to define it...) that's just totally awesome. We had the entire place to ourselves for the whole night. We got full access to the go karts, pool, rides, lazer tag, and arcade. We ended with a hypnotist show, which was way cooler than I ever imagined. The entire night was awesome, and was definitely a great way to close out high school.

Aside from that, I haven't been doing too much. I've been pretty busy doing nothing. Laugh

I went out and bought myself an early birthday present. Ok, that wasn't the original intention, but I got it today and my birthday's Sunday, so I'll just pretend I planned it that way. Smile, Wink & Grin
It's something I've wanted for a while now: a new camera. I got myself a little Canon point-and-shoot about two years ago, but I've wanted a DSLR since even before that. So I got a Canon Rebel T3. I absolutely love it so far! It's exactly what I wanted, and absolutely worth the investment. Now to just head out and test it out trackside Mischief

Well (finally subsiding now that we finally had a day without rain), it's getting kinda late (not really but I'm getting tired anyway), so Imma head out for tonight.

Catch ya later!

-Joe

Good Morning on this beautiful day! The sun´s out, the birds are singing - and Germany beat The Netherlands 2:1 in yesterday qualification match! I am not much of a soccer fan, but whenever there is a match between those two countries, my eyes are glued to the TV set! In fact, it´s not a match, it´s war! Maybe it´s because the Dutch royal family is not Dutch at all, but German - just like Queen Lizzy´s bunch in UK.

I woke up way too early - 3.45 am. I am having bad sleeping issues, again. I don´t make it through the day without a midday nap.

Flo, strong coffee and a cinnamon roll, please.

Right now I am uploading another video to youtube.com. It´s not a new one, but I wanted to combine all these little clips into one. Of course, Bill Gates´ premium product wouldn´t allow me to do so, as the MS MovieMaker does not support the Panasonic format. Luckily, I found a software that converts the format, so I was able to do what I had planned. I will post the result as soon as the upload is finished and the editing has been done.

Joe - that ALP loco looks quite familiar to me, even in the guise of a US loco. Those TRAX locos must be the most successful electric loco design ever.

Barry - keeping my fingers crossed for today´s treatment - Angel are being sent your way!

Curt - great job on weathering the turntable Bow

Ken - I am glad Shaddy is up to her own self now - how about you? Take care, buddy!

Todd - come to think of it, we haven´t seen a progress picture of your layout for ages now - hint, hint!

Chris - 43, eh? What a young whipper-snapper! Actually, I don´t feel there is much of a difference between your 43 and my 56 (well in a few weeks), just a lot less hair and a lot more tummy. Happy B-Day, Sir - a little belated.

Y´ all have a good one!

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and a caramel sweet roll please. Thanks.

Ulrich said something that made me chuckle. HmmCan’t think of what it was, but it was a term we use over here and was one of those things that reminds me we as humans, regardless of what part of the world we live in, all are pretty much the same.  Oh, “Man Cave”. I mean some of the terms used I tend to think of as only in….I mean some of the ways of think…ing…Sigh....Well, it made more sense when I thought it than when I read it.

Lee- That toad story sounds familiar. I think I vaguely remember that.

Vincent- Actually, like you, over the years I have heard that priming first is best and others say after. Just like Chris and I (except that Chris and I won’t argue over which is the RIGHT way….unless he doesn’t come up off at least ONE of those burgers he’s carrying around in that bag.) Each has, in my opinion, valid points. But me, I started this type stuff in the 1:1 auto business and the primer and the paint went on before the details if possible so it kinda passes along to the modeling world for me. I have noticed that there is more of a crispness to the details when done that way, but you do have to do a bit of touch up sometimes. But hey, unless the thing is fresh out of the shop…..the little bits of chipped paint and touch up, can go a long way in the weathering process. Like I said, just my opinion.

Ulrich- I will have to take a picture of the “before cleanup” for you. I will be good for those of you who think, “gee can anyones layout look any worse than mine”.Surprise yes. Oh yes it can.

Welp, just went over to the thread about the forum and threw my thanks into the mixYes. We’ve all done it before but I do think it’s nice to let Kalmbach know from time to time that we appreciate the time and the effort they put into this thing. But I would be remiss if I didn’t add a special thanks to this bunch hereBow. Truly if it wasn’t for the diner and it’s regulars I probably wouldn’t be here today. I heard that Barry!!!!  Anyway, in all seriousness, your attitudes and tolerance for different levels of knowledge and of course levels of interest in Model Railroading, your kindness AND your knowledge and willingness to help has probably kept more in the hobby than you’d ever know. Plus….sometimes it’s just nice to chat about……nothing.

Best get a move on. Gotta get the back of the house washed off then I’ll be done with THAT. (checks off list)………um…..did anyone else find themselves kinda half slightly bouncing up and down in their chair in time, sorta chair dancing, to the first part of the sound track on Ulrich’s video? At least until they realized what they were doing?...Whistling.... Or was it just me.

I don’t understand why Ray was pushing an art cart around if he was in the music field. BUT if it got him up to the front I suppose it was a good idea. Even for one of thoooose kinda teachers.

Ya’ll have a good day!!!!

Good morning. It's 72° and more than slightly damp. Showers and thunderstorms are likely. The high will be 88°

Last night was one storm after another with periods of heavy rain and lots of lightning and thunder. Today looks to be more of the same as the forecast is calling for frequent dangerous lightning and brief heavy rains on the order of one-half inch. Not the day I'd choose for outdoor activities.

Not doing much today except running some trains and doing some cleanup on the layout. At this time I have two Roco built FP7's running. One Atlas, the other Con-Cor. The Con-Cor is the noisier of the two and tends to run hot.

Morning All,

Happy Flag Day.  Just trying to get motivated to go do some grocery shopping at Wally World.

Joe- Congrats on graduation and glad you had a great party. I forgot, are you planning on going to college?

Ken- Hope your toe is better and great pics of the Army loco's and the herd of dogsLaugh.

Ulrich- Great Video.

Todd- I'm with you. I enjoy just rambling at times and not have to worry about being flamed especially about modeling that you seem to get elsewhere.

Hope everyone has a good day.

Good Morning Modelers!

It's 59F heading up into the high 80's today with the potential for thunderstorms heading back into the area in the next couple of days.  Rain YES, Lightning / Winds NO!

FIRE NEWS:  As of yesterday there are now 1,000 Fire Fighters on the lines with most making their heroic stand on the eastern edge to save as many homes as they can and keep this beast from getting into the city itself.  They have gotten a 10% containment in the NE corner where this fire has burned up into an old fire so they caught a break where they can start and hold a line along the eastern edge.  The North, West, and South edges are burning out of control.

Here is another video that has taken by folks that live in the area...

Mornin' everyone!  And a happy Flag Day and also a happy birthday to my Mother.  Of course she isn't here to celebrate anymore........  She would have been 95 today except she died in 2005.  Still lived a good long life and managed to live another 35 year after the doctor told her she had less than 5 years to live!  My Father used to say she was going to late for her own funeral, and she was.

Zoe, just lots of dark roast coffee to wake me up please.

Darren, I am keeping everyone out there in my prayers.  Hope they can gain comntrol of that monster soon!

Todd, same type of cart, but we just called it a cart....  Mine was piled high with music books, CDs, a boom box, classroom Orff instruments, my Guitar, and all sorts of other "STUFF"!

"Oh, the music goes round and round, oh, oh, oh,oh...  And it comes out here...."

Glad I didn't have to use a turntable back then...

have a good one!

 Morning

 Flo, Coffee Pleases.

In 58 minutes I got to start getting ready for work. Another 9 hour day, today. Sure hope my feet will handle it better today!

Going to be a hot one, high around 91. Man I miss winter.

Guess I will run the trains some.

Columbian coffee in a SOUTHERN mug, please.

***Darren, that video shows just a glimps of the monumental challenge firefighters are facing. As much water as is being dropped by that chopper, it looks insignificant against the backdrop. Yikes!

Have a good day all.

Cheers! Cowboy Rob

Tried for the past couple of hours to hook up a router. Followed the instructions to the letter. No matter what I did all I got was 'A Network Cable Is Unplugged'! Everything hooked up exactly as it should be. Darn POC is going back to Wal-Mart at the earliest opportunity! Looking at the box I see what the problem is: MADE IN CHINA!

Afternoon everyone! Chloe, I'll have some Coffee and pancakes, please! Dinner

Not too much on the schedule for today. Some general house cleaning (ugh) during the day. Then I'll be headed over to the girlfriend's house for dinner. I'll then be heading down the shore tomorrow morning with friends. And I'm still not looking forward to this cleaning...

Ken, glad to hear Shaddy is doing better!

Ulrich, I had a lot of trouble with MS Movie Maker while doing a project for school. MSMM doesn't accept the MP4 files that the camera recorded in, so I had to convert those, which totally killed the quality. Then, MSMM kept freezing, to just add to my frustration...
But your video still came out great!
And yes, I forgot that you would be familiar with the ALP's cousins!

For those that aren't familiar with NJT's ALP-44, ALP-46, and ALP-45DP locomotives, they are direct descendants of European electrics (ALP means "American Locomotive Passenger"). The 44's are cousins to the AEM-7's, which came from something (either Rc4 or Rc6?), and the 46's are the American versions of the TRAXX locomotives, which currently dominate Europe. The ALP-45DP dual modes were derived from the 46's, with the bodies modified to accept the Caterpillar prime movers (yes, moverS; there are two per unit!) in addition to the electrical equipment.

Curt, thank you! And yes, I will be starting at Northeastern University in the fall.

I best be moving on to the day's chore list (again, UGH). See ya later!

-Joe

Whistling

Hi Darren,

I just heard on the radio that we (Saskatchewan) are sending three water bombers your way as of this morning. Sure hope that will a help to get that monster under control.

Prayers and best wishes to all in harm's way in beautiful Colorado.

Ray - those Traxx locos are a kind of revolution - powerful, yet fairly inexpensive. The Swiss Federal Railway bought exclusively locos made in Switzerland (mainly by SLM Winterthur), but changed to the Traxx family, causing the closure of SLM Winterthur.

This is what I say every day pass by my house:

Afternoon guys

Happy flag day, and that reminds me it's also my mother's birthday.

Just got back from another short day at work. When I got back there was a box waiting for me. Turns out it was an athearn bluebox SD40-2 in CP red paint. It's missing the parts baggie that contains the brake cylinders, headlight lenses, numberboards, and a couple other odds and ends. I don't really care about the handrails as they are getting replaced with smokey valley ones.

For some strange reason, I don't really feel like working on the Fs or the GP5 today. I don't know why, but that may change. On the Fs I was planning on doing a light primer coat before adding details today, but I think it'd be best to wait until I get the larger detail parts on (especially the plows), do some sanding to the nose area, and drill the grab iron holes out. The GP5 needs to be pulled out of the alcohol and have it's nose shimmed up. But as I read somewhere, don't work on them if you don't feel like it.

Ulrich, so you live trackside? I live 30 miles from the nearest tracks

Jeff, Did you try unplugging it, waiting, and plugging it back in? (like the modems) Mine sometimes quits, but doing that makes it work again.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

I tried everything but dancing to it and teaching it astrophysics!
