Garry: The disarray on your deck looks like the mess in my yard!

Got a break here as the storms are moving off to the south-east. We've been getting royally slammed! The yard looks like a cat two hurricane went through. Limbs and branches down, pine cones all over the place. Took a couple of lightning strikes on trees near my trailer. Looks like I might lose one. There's power lines all around my yard so if it dies I'll get the power company to come take it down. Nothing else going on right now.

Morning all from VerySunnyCalifornia.

Hit 97 yesterday, supposed to be the same today.  First summer heat wave, and here in the valley it means no wind and oppressive air quality (not fun for we COPD sufferers).    So whatever I do on the MR in the garage has to be done in the morning or evening.  I don't know whether or not it's age or weather or what, but my usually bullet-proof track has developed a couple of weird kinks in a couple of spots that my 2-10-2 doesn't like (that loco is my 'track-tester').   So I'm going to have to do a little trackwork, I see.

Jim, Ray:  Kitties are just fine, thanks.  Spooky still runs the place and Uff-Dah is his usual goofy self.  I've 'inherited' another cat--Chester--kinda/sorta by accident.  He was the neighbor's cat, but after the neighbor died, he was kind of left to his own devices.  Turns out he was diabetic and developed a really bad case of cellulitus on his right foreleg.  I took him to the vet, got the cellulitus treated, started him on Insulin and put him in the computer room while he recuperated.   He's a Siamese/gray tabby mix and a real sweetie.  So he's currently a house-cat and as soon as I get him further tested, I'll introduce him to everyone else.  He and Uff-Dah seem to have become buddies through the computer room door, so I don't see any problems with him joining the general population.  One thing he is that the other two really aren't, and that's a bonafide Lap-Cat.   In fact, he's on my lap right now while I'm typing this.  He's about 13 and I think this is the first time he's ever been a house-cat.  He likes it!

Darren:  That fire looks absolutely devastating.  I hope it's contained VERY soon.  I worked myself through college with a summer job on a Forest Service fire crew back in the late 'fifties, early 'sixties up around Truckee.   I remember my one big Campaign Fire in 1960, the Donner Ridge blaze which ended up burning over fifty thousand acres--the only way we stopped it was when it ran out of fuel near Reno.  The fire was 36 miles long and between 5-10 miles wide.  Most of it through very heavy timber.  My prayers are with everyone in that area.

Jeff:  Hm, I wonder if your neighbors are any relations to the bunch I have that lives down the block from here?   Party-time every weekend, and unfortunately they have a Garage Band to boot.  It's gotten so that I can time their weekend bashes to the noise of the police helicopter overhead, LOL!

Well, speaking of cats, it's time to feed my little tribe.  Then go out into the garage and study the 'kinks'.   Of course, I could re-lay that entire 36" radius curve with my 35-1/2" Bachmann EZ track--THERE'S a thought!

Best to all, prayers to those in need.

Even EZ-Track can kink. Don't ask how I know. All the track on my layout is EZ-Track, turnouts included.

Afternoon guys

No storms yet, but it's forecasted for today and all this week. So far it's nice out.

Well I got tired of waiting on the Fs and pulled them as is. This is probably a question for Chris, but anyone could answer it. Should I add all the wire grabs and metal detail parts before or after priming? I'm thinking before priming, which means I'd be waiting a while so Ican get all the detail parts for my Fs in one swing. That and I'd have to see some of the Fs I'm getting to see what else I need.

Darren, If I could send you all the rain that's forecasted this week I would. Our wildfire is under control (if not gone already) and it's supposed to rain all week. We got close to 2 feet in the past few days.

Garry, What a mess. You don't bolt or tie your stuff down, or put it inside before a storm do you? I tend to do that before a big storm. That way I don't loose anything, and nothing gets thrown through a window.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

I was running the GP7's and GP35 earlier today and I heard something that I seldom hear on a layout. A flat spotted wheel. I checked it and it really is flat spotted. It's in a Proto 2000 AAR truck on an Athearn GP35.

Listen as the locos pass left to right and you'll hear it. Click here for the video.

Darren, If I could send you all the rain that's forecasted this week I would. Our wildfire is under control (if not gone already) and it's supposed to rain all week. We got close to 2 feet in the past few days.

Sadly it was the massive rain storm over the weekend that caused this fire in the first place.  The city got dumped on and the lightning started the fire.  Started out as just a 2 acre fire then the winds kicked up and it was at 20,000 acres in no time flat with the dry / dead trees that were just prime to be fuel.

Right now they are showing 43,000+ acres burned but it's burning into an area of an old fire and near other strong physical boundaries (lakes / rock ridges) so they are getting about 5% to 10% containment today.  500 Fire Fighters on the ground with another 300 on the way in.  Air support has been great including military helicopters with buckets hitting it from all angles.  Sadly though they say well over 100 structures lost and counting.

 Evening Dinner's!

Flo, have you seen my snake? Neither have I, I will take a Beer pleases.

Curt Sorry I got hung up today and did not call. Between not feeling good, taking Sue to her foot doctor, going to the bank and trying to get hold of the living at the VA I ran out of time. I will either set up a new time or PM you details.

2-10-2 Front Well Jeffery was right, there is a set screw under the engine. Last night when I lubed the engine and saw not all the screws matched I figured someone had lost a screw and just used a flat head screw. Had to turn the engine up right to get the screw to tighten and adjust it some. But she is up and running again! Big Smile Next is the decoder!

Todd Stores up there don't carry dulled belch? Boy that is a backwards part of this state! Shop and Save sale dulled belch by the gallons! OK, I was trying to spell Bleach. But I was following Doctors Orders, drink a lot of Beer and run the trains a lot!

Work Front I go in Wednesday at 9:00 and should get off at 7:00. In a odd way I am looking forward to it.

Evening All,

I made breaded pork chops, Scalloped Potatoes and Green Beans for supper, so Flo can I have a cup of Decaf please?

Did not accomplish much today except get a haircut (badly needed) in preparation of going back to work and run some errands. Oh yeah, I edged the yard. It only rained about 10 minutes today but I believe the rain chances go up the rest of the week.

Here are my and my brothers first HO loco's (1960's) The blue one was mine.

Hey Barry,

This way closer to Hamilton we just had a brief shower and that was it. The humidity has pretty much lifted and I have got the windows open upstairs and in the basement, I love the central air in the heat but I love the windows open with fresh air blowing in. Still a little muggy but It is getting cooler and drier as the night goes on.

Good Evening, Chloe, I'll have a CAW mug of coffee and a blueberry muffin, please. Thank you!

Dennis (VegaV8) - in a lot of ways I would agree with you, but then again,  I've known some real estate people myself, and the trade-offs for those 'big' commissions is, the properties that they pay for ads in the paper or online  (most ofen out of their own pocket, as the broker in a firm doesn't pay or reimburse them for it), the brochures for showings. Plus, they 'get' to show the property at hours when most of us would rather be home eating dinner, etc. The ones making the big money with less effort (IMHO) are the commercial property realtors, who have much less of the Sunday afternoon open houses, the weird hours, etc. Though in your case, I wonder if that realtor was just sitting and watching the property for a while, hoping to catch you at a time when the newest renters had moved out and you were disgusted at the prospect of clean-up,fix-up, re-do, etc. yet one more time. There are definitely some two-legged sharks in that business... Make sure the new owners know that they cannot call you at all hours of the day or night every time that something that (in a few months or years) has reached the end of its (reasonable) life. Better perhaps to be done with the 'fun' of maintaining it, screening new prospective tenants, etc., and see about putting your funds into something with a better return (like trains? Whistling).

Mr.B., that's not a bad idea for 'subverting' the doctor's clients! Thumbs Up

Lee, I bet that Marines show attracted all kinds of guys (and maybe some gals, too?) with all those gizmos and weaponry on display. Got any of the grandchildren (under or over 25) who can be drafted into helping with the moving stuff out or in? (Just hoping, for you and your brother's sakes)

Ken, maybe it's good that you can feel your toenail's pressure. (Ask Jeff about that). AngelAngel for continuing healing. No news is good news on the snake? We can hope! Glad you got the gearing glitch tended to. Smile

Todd, I thought Ken meant dulled/diluted/toned down bleach. Ah, Ken pretty much confirmed that (but you might still check your local store, as he said). And have the Williamsville Floor Wars turned into the Patio Wars now?  Smile, Wink & Grin

Curt, one thing to check might be (especially if the paper fits into a cassette that pops into an opening on the bottom front... I have a Canon printer that I couldn't find the 'jammed paper', until I removed the cassette and lifted the front of the printer. Looking underneath, I saw a jammed piece of paper, right before it would've made the 180 degree turn to come back through the printing area. So now, if I get that 'jammed' message, I check underneath, as well as from the top view. As you said - Ah, technology.

Speaking of which - still have a ways to go before I can regularly get to my credit union's login page...Bang Head. But after talking with the CU this morning, and then talking with one of our geeks from w**k (and he remoted into my w**k desktop PC from his building to ours to watch and to poke around inside), he wasn't able to get my desktop PC to be able to login, but he was able to get my w**k laptop to be able to login - through our private WiFi network. I was able to get to the CU site and check balances and see that a couple of payments had indeed shown up, etc. Next, over my lunch, I took a clone of my MacBook's drive (which was from a few days ago, before all this #%*& started), hooked it up to my MacBook and was able to get to the CU's online pages. Now, I just need to figure how to get the settings from the external cloned drive and the (newer) documents and apps from the internal drive on the MacBook merged. Don't want to risk losing whatever in my settings on the cloned drive are helping me, but don't want to lose the newer documents and updated apps, either. (Ah, technology...)

Ulrich, sorry for not commenting on the U-boat; I wasn't sure if that was intended to be in the photo, or (shows I'm thinking in print terms...) if it was some kind of overlapping exposures. My bad! That is impressive about chasing the ducks (though they might not agree...). Do the torpedos float if they miss their mark? Nice photos of the morning local there! Thumbs Up

Darren, I'm with (who was it that mentioned?) - where are you on that map? Got me wondering. I was thinking that this morning's show said something (unless I wasn't awake yet) about 65,000 square miles. Would that have been later than your post? (Nope, just checked your post time - also saw your 2nd post about being 70 miles south)

Jeff, it looked like your area might get a good soaking of rain today. Hope you can rest up and get feeling better by tomorrow. AngelAngel

Ray, nice photo of the ice 'chute' there! As for the English teacher being a 'real teacher', when I taught elementary art in one sixth grade building (many years ago...), we razzed the English teacher there about having "silent reading Monday through Thursday, and test on Friday".Mischief

Harry, sounds like you could stand to do like Jeff and rest up today, too! AngelAngel

Garry, how much of your deck furniture is okay (vs. in need of fixing/replacing)? Sorry for your bald eagles - hope they can find another spot for their nest (and are okay - beautiful birds!)

BridgeTom, great to hear that Uff-Dah and Spooky have a new cat to introduce to the finer arts of caboose-stealing. Now, you'll have two of them distracting you while the other one makes off with one of your cabeese... Or has Uff-Dah progressed to absconding with articulateds now? Smile, Wink & Grin If the temp outside is hitting 97 F, that might have something to do with your track kinking, I would think. Oops Hey, does your local police dept. have one of those unmanned drones(the Predator ones...)? (Just wondering, with your neighbors down the street, and all...Whistling)

Tonight after dinner, I finished the walls and roof assembly on this first Main St. Heritage kit - the one I should have started with (but didn't...):

and the back:

(The back one had flash on it, so it looks more washed out than the other 2 views).

Next, I need to touch up the window trim and sides of the false front, and add 'glass', signs and maybe an interior (if I get really ambitious...). Still have to decide what kind of establishment this will be, also. And a variety of clutter, trash can out back, and other details, also.

A/C at w**k in the afternoon today wasn't doing its stuff. Surprisingly, when our supervisor called the facilities guy, he got the A/C repair guys by VERY quickly(!)Yeah We have an A/C unit on the roof on each end of the building (lobby in the middle portion), and when you walked out the door from our end into the lobby area, you could feel the temp drop a bit. Felt good! As I was leaving tonight, the repair guys were out front, and they said the place should be cooled down by morning. Hey, the units are both fairly old, so it's not surprising if they tire out on a hot day! Cool

I'll be at the RC, having another cup of coffee for a bit. Light a candle for G, please.

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape G.

I got some rest today but not as much as I needed. Hopefully I can sleep good tonight.

Ken: When you get to the point you can't feel pain in your feet you have a problem. With the exception of bone pain I can't feel pain from the knees down. Same goes for my arms from the elbows down.

Time for me to call it a night. Took my night meds a little while ago and just did my 100 unit insulin injection so I should be good to go. See y'all tomorrow.

Evenin' folks,

Janie, I'll have a nice cup of decaf please....

Had an enjoyable evening at a get together for our class reunion committee.  Actually anyone from the class could come, but it was almost all people from the committee.  Only about a dozen of us, but we had a good time just chatting.  I decided to wear an old nametag I had made years ago for Scouts.  It says, "What's His Name" on it.  Got a few giggles and laughs...

Just transferred some $$ into my checking to pay the down payment for the Solar Installation.  The first payment is basically a "good faith" payment that is refundable if any agency along the way doesn't come through as planned.  Nice I can come up with that one without adding to my loan....  The next one (half the remainder)  is paid after all the agencies have had their say and the materials are ordered, and the final one is when they commission the system after the installation and everything has been OKed.

I decided to go with a 4.32 kW system that will give me about 70% of my electric power a year.  This is one I am buying outright.  I did some more digging around on the idea of the lease and decided it just doesn't fit who I am and what I want to have hanging over my head.

Jim, so you were a "special" teacher also......  I used to hate that designation, and every time I was called THAT I would growl, "No, I'm a music teacher!"  One particularly irritating incident came from a "friend" of mine who was a 6th. Grade Social Studies Teacher.  He was the head person for the Outdoor Education Committee and the first time he got to observe me teaching was when we were out at camp with the 6th. grades, and I was teaching "Survival" class.  After the session he said to me, "You know, you are an excellent teacher!  You could have been a real teacher!"  He didn't like my response in which I informed him I am a "REAL" teacher! He later apologized and said for the first time he realized his characterization of Arts and PE teachers was way off base....

Time to call it a night.  Better put the loco in the roundhouse......

Prayers for all in need!

Morning guys

I worked some more on the 2 F9s I got from Jeff:

I noticed that the filler piece for inside the door frame area should have been .040 thick, not .060 like I thought. I'm tired of waiting and didn't want to wait on a sheet of .040 styrene. So I glued 2 .020 strips back-to-back to fill in the door. The back-to-back sheets aren't pictured yet. I'll show them when I get some of the doors on these units.

Jim, that's a neat looking building right there.

Good Morning!!!

Just coffee today thanks.

Sunny, with a high near 79.

Ulrich- Oh I’ll have to admit I never noticed the U-boat. Probably because I’m not really into boats, but I’m always interested in a good model of almost anything. So I shall revisit said picture.

Speaking of models (odd we would talk about that stuff hereHmm) I’m really getting the itch to do something in the old trainroom better known around the world, and I mean that literally (thanks to Ulrich and Aussie JimYes), as Toddland (of which I’m king). Maybe I can squeeze just a bit in there soon.

Actually I exaggerate that just a bit. I  could play in there now if I wanted. I’m not that busy. However, I choose not to to kinda keep myself on track so I don’t end up dropping the ball on this “get things caught up after the last couple three four years/finish what I start New Years resolution” thing I got going on. Makes Brenda kinda happy to see things actually get done/fixed/cleaned up if you know what I mean.Whistling

Darren- I realize that fire is one of natures way of restoring and refreshing so it’s kinda a must, but I do feel for and pray for those who are in the way of natures cleansing.

Just thinking. (dangerous I know ) But I don’t know how human beings can be so arrogant as to include fire as the greatest invention of all. We didn’t invent it, we just figured out how to start one when we wanted to. Oo! If a raccoon wanted a fire, they could’ve probably figured that one out. If they can get in a house by figuring out how to remove a screen without destroying it and opening an unlocked window (true story), they can sure figure out a match.Indifferent

Ken- I hope you know we are laughing WITH you, not AT you. I know what happens. You use spell check and auto correct. It picks a word closest to what you typed. Sometimes it’s not the right word (still laughing at “Genital Breeze" Laugh) then when or if you proof read, you know what you mean so when you read so soon after, you see what you meant, not what you actually typed. A very known problem for everyone and the main reason teachers always said the best proof read is by someone else or you several hours later. We all do it. Don’t change a thing, those little mistakes now and then coupled with, mainly, your sense of humor really make your posts enjoyable at least to me. I just wish things both financially and health wise would turn around for you so you could start having things like trips to Walmart be your biggest irritants.

AH! Dulled bleach! Never heard of it. Though I see Jim has. I need to get out more.

Vincent- I’d probably prime and paint first before adding the details. Then clean out the holes a bit and apply the details. I’d think that would help from blending the crispness of the details. Just my thinkin

This wireless mouse is really starting to irritate me. I have however figured out it isn't because it's wireless,it's the IR part that is not as good as my previous corded IR. Very jerky and sometimes not responsive depending on the surfaceBang Head. The other worked very well on just about any surface including my leg.

Jim- I see you do what I do. Pick a building you like then try to make it fit the layout. Sometimes not an easy task.

Ray- Yes it probably is a bit irritating to be referred to as a Chorus director/leader or band director/leader instead of Music teacher. Apparently most people don’t realize that to teach music of any type is not just some person who can read music and carry a tune.

Speaking of deck furniture (ours is right as I left it yesterday) Brenda unloaded the old stuff on some sucker…I mean our son says he’ll take it even though the fabric on two is torn and the other two are not far behind. He says he can fix it. Gotta run that in to him this morn. Now I don’t have to figure out how to get rid of that.Yes

Sooooo…..best get movin so I can get started. Still need to finish pressure washing the house so’s to get that done and I never got that gutter/downspout cleaned out. Course, haven’t needed it yet either. Besides, getting pretty fed up with all this brass bragging goin on BARRY!!!!!

Ya’ll have a good day!!!!

Good Afternoon Gang!

we are having the nicest April weather here in Northern Germany. I should not complain, most of Germany is right now drowning ...

Janie, strong coffee in my JNR mug, please. I have a hard time to keep my eyes open.

Ray- you know, Petra used to teach cooking and housekeeping in a vocational school. She was never regarded to be a "real" teacher, but had to chip in a lot more work to prepare her classes than those "real" ones. She also had more classes, but received less pay. That´s what finally made her to quit teaching.

Todd - a visit to my friend´s place is like meeting Alice in Wonderland. He is into model railroading, not so much for the trains, but creating scenes, most of them with some kind of animation. He also build model air planes and boats, mostly from scratch. His man cave , err - shop - down in the basement is loaded with tools and materials, which make a model builder´s heart race. He has been a great help to me, not only with his skills, but also with his friendship. He´s the only one who is still around.

I have discovered a new hobby within our hobby - making little videos. It is lots of fun seeing your trains moving around in a little video. I don´t have a camcorder, but my little Panasonic digicam is doing a good job.

Here are some more little videos:

Enjoy!

Good Morning Modelers!

It's 59F and clear heading towards 90 today - YUK!

Fire News:  Over 43,000 acres burned and 2,600 evacuation notices issued so far.  As of this morning that are saying they have 10% containment  but could be awhile before they can get this beast circled.  Over 600 Fire Fighters on the ground with fantastic Air Support including 10 Tanker Bombers!

Morning All,

Sitting here looking over the forum. Slept so so  again last night. Trying to get motivated to go upstairs and finish weathering the TT pit. I thought I was done but MOH let me know that I needed to do moreWhistling, soooo.... in the effort to try to keep MOH somewhat interested I will work on that.

Ulrich- Very nice videos. Being a retired submariner I noticed the U-Boat right away. I have always been fascinated with them and love the movie Das Boat.

Barry- Hope your treatment continues to have no issues.

Ray- MOH convinced me to get Solar to heat the pool years ago. To be honest I can't tell the difference, but I hope yours works great.

Vince- Look  forward to progress photos of your F9's.

Cape Jim- Very nice little building. Is it going to go in the area of the church on your layout?

TWhite- I looked at your photo albums and all I can say is incredible. I wish I had half the talent you do.

Everyone have a nice day and prayers for those in need.

Your friend has a gift that I envy. The U-Boat looked like a type VII, from what I could see. The tug looks very much like the old Foundation Franklin, built in Scotland in 1917, she was coal fired and had scots marine four pass boilers. She was built as a sea going tug, and ran out of Canada, Halifax I believe, during the 1920s-1940s. Farley Mowartt wrote a book, Grey Seas Under, about her career as a salvage and rescue tug on the North Atlantic. Makes for interesting reading if you are into that type of thing. HC

Good morning, all.  Coffee for me, and keep it coming.  Last night was my weekly hockey game, and I am always a zombie on Wednesdays.  60s and raining in New England.  Waters the lawn, clears the pollen out of the air, and I have to work anyway, so it's OK with me.

Ray, my wife is an art teacher.  I think she works harder than anyone else at the school.  The kids love her classes and turn out work which surprises everyone.  ("First graders did this???!!!???)  Fortunately, we live in a town which can still afford to have art and music as part of the curriculum.  It's really sad to see schools cutting those out so they can pay more administrators and do more standardized test preparation.

Curt, I remember seeing Das Boot in the theater, with a good sound system.  It was in German with subtitles.  I speak enough German that I didn't have to spend the whole movie reading.  At one point, I think my ears popped from the pressure.

Best wishes to all.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have the Eggs Benedict and lots of hot dark roast coffee in a FGLK Mug.  Please and Thank You, Ma'am!

We're having some late April weather as well here in the Finger Lakes today.  Currently 59°F with a high of 69° later this afternoon.  Cloudy and breezy out there as well, but no "liquid sunshine".  Oh!  According to the weather channel website, we haven't had any snow this month........ Huh?

Ulrich, nice videos!  And I might add some beautiful modeling you've done Sir!  BTW, to teach here in NYS all teachers (with a few exceptions, but they are not "teachers") have to pass the same requirements and have the same basic education for the job no matter what subject they teach!  Those who teach the Arts often have to have many more specific coursework in their subject area.....  But the term "special" tends to said with a rolling of the eyes implying somehow inferior.  I firmly believe that the whole child needs to be taught and nurtured to grow into a responsible adult!  In fact there is considerable evidence out there showing those states where the arts are  taught as equals to the other subjects the students do far better on standardized tests.  I also tried my best to show respect to all my colleagues in the profession.  An old friend from when I first started teaching, long gone now, who was the principal I reported to once asked me if I knew the difference between an Elementary teachers and a High School teacher?  His answer was...  Elementary Teachers teach students, High School teachers teach subjects!  The concept has stayed with me over my 32 years as a Vocal/General Music Teacher.

Todd, I never minded being called a Chorus Director....  That was a major part of what i did, kinda like the PE teacher being called Coach.  It was when what I did was being referred to as somehow less important in human culture than what they did....  And that in no way is meant to take away the importance of what they taught.

Time to bring out the loco for today's trip!

Later!

Good morning. It's 79° and partly cloudy. The high will be 88° with a chance of showers and thunderstorms.

I definitely have to get the layout cleaned up today. It looks like an F4 tornado hit it. Other than that just take it easy and watch some movies. Got 'The Train' in the DVD player ready to go. May run some trains later.

I have 'Das boot' on VHS. May be time to dust it off and watch it again. I also have U-571 on DVD.

U-Boats - next time I am at my friend´s place, I will take some more pictures of his fleet of U-Boats. The biggest one rests on a shelf in his living room - much too his wife´s dismay!

Good Morning All,

Curt, if you get the chance pick up a copy of Grey Wolf Grey Sea, the book that made the movie Das Boot.

Dennis, good to hear you’re not in the direct line of fire.  When I was stationed in Corpus Christi, TX Mexico had some serious wild fires one year and you had to limit your outdoor activity.  I think that was the year after it rained toads.  No not cats and dogs, we had toads fall out of the sky.  A tornado went through a completely different part of the state and picked up a couple metric tons of toads and they fell out of the sky onto my neighborhood.  Yes they were still alive and not very happy with the re-location process.
