Evening All,

Drinking a cup of coffee after a supper of BBQ sandwiches and fries. We couldn't figure what to have and I found some BBQ in the fridge so that question was answered.

I made up 2 train orders today and ran them to verify they worked. The first was taking full coal cars to the Frank coaling facility, private coaling trestle and the Sandusky engine servicing coaling tower. The second one was picking up the empty cars. I would say it took me about 4 hours to do the 2 of them. That is with both of them typed up and put into a plastic sleeves. This is a lot longer to do these than I expected.

I'm not sure what is going on in Trains.com today but it is brutal. Makes me glad to be in the Diner where people are civil to each other.

Barry- Hope you are continuing to be well.

Ken- Hope your big toe continues to improve.

Sue- Please tell Larry that that is a great painting.

Hope everyone has a good night and prayers for those in need.

Good evening y'all. The message I sent to Galaxy was to get in touch with us.Anyone. No response as yet. We have to just wait and keep a Prayer for him.  Lawn ,laundry , dishes and a trip to WALLYLAND. Big surprise, NO weirdies.

Wish all a goodnight with Blessings and Prayers. I'll check tomorrow to see if Mr. G  has posted.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, I sure could use a cup of decaf after a very busy day....

Looks like there is a one man war out there in the main forum going on....  I would think he should have been nicely banned before his third rant on nothing in particular.....  Say wonder if it is really, ah, he who can't be mentioned...  You know.... Ahem.....

I had a good day out at the Museum today.  Had about 350 visitors come down the line.  One group was a birthday party with about 20 little 4 or 5 year old kids....  The youngest kid there today looked to be a couple weeks old, and the oldest visitor probably near 80.  Wide range of people I would say.

Sue, tell your other half I really like his painting!

Ken, I am praying your toe continues to improve and heal up.  Any sign of the little critter out in the garage.....?  Even if you find it has left, don't tell the other half.  That will protect the area as your personal "Man Cave!"

Barry, hope you are recovering well from the treatment and it does the trick for you.  Still in my prayers!

Ulrich, I think you are to nice to the "victim" out there in the main forum.....

Warm day here in the Finger Lakes.  Nine O'clock here and it is still 81°F outside.  May just leave the air conditioners on tonight.  I can turn them off when I make my early morning pit stop in the little room down the hall.  They go on fan only anyway as soon as the temp is below what i keep the house anyway.......

Maybe the moderators can use this to dig out the stuff piled deeply outside the diner.........

Have a great night!

Good evening, all.  I'm about to call it a weekend.  We went out to dinner Saturday night with a bunch of old ski friends.  Dinner was fine, but then the girls wanted to go dancing at a loud bar.  Not my cup of tea, and late besides.  (I would rather sit in a corner and have people think I'm a bad dancer than get out on the floor and prove them right.)  Anyway, I was dragging all day today and got nothing accomplished, other than making some chicken leg quarters on the rotisserie.

We've been doing our best in the critter battle.  I found a mouse that had been in the trap a while in the basement.  I found that one by smell.  Yuck.  We got a vole in a mousetrap in the garden, and yesterday I relocated a woodchuck in the Have-a-Heart trap from our backyard down to the river a few miles away.  I hate those things, but somehow I don't like the idea of doing away with an animal that large if I don't have to.

Sue, tell Larry that he's got another fan of his artwork.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

Evening guys (and Sue)

The rain seems to have let up. That's good since nearly 2 straight days of the stuff switching between pouring and rain isn't exactly good with the high-water table. We had flash flood and tornado warnings today, but all is quiet.

Sue, Tell larry I like that one.

Flip, You went to wally land and didn't see any weirdies? Something is wrong on your end of Florida

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Time for me to call it a night. Tested the Y6B today pushing a stripped down diesel chassis and two NMRA weight freight cars. On DCC it took four seconds to travel one foot, about fifteen smph at full power. On DC it may do between twenty-five and thirty smph. It has a clicking sound in the drive that I can't identify. It needs to be torn down and given a serious cleaning as I pulled a ton of grime off the drivers alone. It has way too many small parts for me to do it as only a few of my fingers work right. There are a couple of people interested in it, one here and the other is on another site. I've told both about the locos deficiencies (did you think I'd lie about it? That's not my way) as well as listing them here. In short it's slow and noisy but that should be fixable. Working on this was easier than working on a brass loco. I did that for a couple of years and I was reminded of it earlier today. See y'all tomorrow.

Good Morning Gang!

Holy Moly - what a day it was in the forum yesterday! Must have been "The National Bash The Moderator Day" or something like it. Got the feeling that I am currently the only one around to do the honors. Took 4 hours of my time trying to keep things low, but that bloke must have blown a fuse after reading Sheldon´s answer (which wasn´t bad). Well, he is now back on moderation status and eventually up for a ban.

Flo, coffee and a breakfast bagel, please.

Sue - that picture is terrific. I wish I could do something like it... Is it oil colors or acrylics?

Jim - you are right with the details. Folks that have never been to Japan wouldn´t notice the lack of it. Unfortunately, I have been there and have noticed the massive amount of wires strung along the catenary. It is one of the typical features there, so I will try to capture the look of it. I will use E-Z line for the telephone wires, black wire for the power lines, but I am not yet sure about the catenary. I tend to firing up my soldering iron (you know this is not my favorite tool) and use .3 mm brass wire for the catenary. This will keep me quite busy and out of mischief Mischief

Ray - using a rotary snow plow to clean up the muck left outside may be not so good an idea. I´d call that the$1***$2hitting the fan Laugh

Ken - any news from the snake front? How´s your toe coming along?

Rob - healing prayers for your toe as well!

I am deeply worried about Galaxy - I hope he reads this and reports back to us. Galaxy, we miss you!

Have a good start into the new week!

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and the Brakeman’s Special please. Scrambled, bacon and whole wheat thank you.

Just come in from meandering around the yard. Nothing else to do at 0430. Nice to see we still have a few tussles going on to keep things exciting. Wow. Just as I thought maybe our old friend was back I saw Jeff’s warning and thought hmmm. Maybe. BUT I read the whole thing anyway. Bored I guess. Oh I see Ray had the same thought. That type of talk sounds very familiar.

You know I was just thinking, I bet the reason the police keep people away from plane crash sites is because they don’t want someone laying down amongst the wreckage and then when someone walks up, pretends to just wake up and say “What happened?”

Broke out the power washer yesterday. Got the mold off the North side and then the driveway and the walks and around the front door before I ran out of cleaner. Well I didn’t use it on the concrete. So today after the Church stuff, I’ll run into Spfld and get another couple gallons of vinyl siding wash.

Sue- extend my compliments to Larry on the beautiful picture.

Welp I best get a movin. I may just get an early start today.

I can’t believe the way you guys gang up on me just because I’ve got my first loco I ever got. You’re all just jealous. Where’s a moderator.

Ya’ll have a good day!!!!

Good morning, Diners.  I stopped by for my morning coffee.

Larry says, "Thanks."  I knew you guys would like it.  He has been painting landscapes/mountains.  I had him paint a loco earlier, and his sister requested this one for her new home whee she saw the other loco.  One of the boxcars has their name on it.   When he did the backdrop clinic in February it rekindled his interest in painting, so he is painting in acrylics instead of oils.

Off to work,

Sue

 Morning Folks

 Coffee please, thank you Flo.

Feeling a little sick to my stomach today. Not sure if it is the med's or worry about looking at the funds I have left. Need to go put money in the bank to cover what I spent at K-10 last Thursday plus car insurances, light bill and the gas bill. Sure was not counting on going to the ER Saturday, if I did, I would not have went to K-10 Thursday.

Barry I hope to have something like that on the new layout. Bridge will only be about 11 inch over the lower part.

Sue Give Larry a Yes from me on the painting.

Jim Thanks for you well wishes on the toe. Picture I posted is the real thing, I wished I was that good!

 Curt Thank you as well.

Ray No sign of the snake. Sue as figured out that if it left on it's own, it can come back on its own. Think the man cave is now off limits.

Ulrich Far as my toe, well it does not hurt. But that is what got me into this mess in the first places!

Really starting to feel under the weather, time to lay down.

Good Morning Modelers!

*Choke* *Cough* *Choke*

Yep, another major wildfire is loose the smoke has been pouring into the cities up and down the front range.  What started out as a 2 Acre fire is now 20,000 taking out homes and other structures in it's path.  It's mainly the winds that are driving this beast in all sorts of directions.

On a happy note, Lisa and I got out on Saturday to do some more Railfanning and I got photos of a few more stations plus other RR equipment.  My Travel Blog got updated on Sunday so you can take a peak at out Saturday RRAdventures trip.

Morning guys

Well the manager called me last night and told me I was off today. So I slept in. I didn't sleep well because my brother was in the next room playing the Xbox loud enough that it sounded like he had an actual gun in the room. That and he yells over the mic... Then someone kept texting me at 3 in the morning... I feel like taking a nap already...

So far I managed to find the pieces to the 8-40B that's going to another dinner. I was going to install DCC in it today, but all the decoders I have left are DOA. I also forgot I converted it to be plug and play. I have a back-up plan for this one though. I'll probably modify the other bachmann cylindrical hopper to accept athearn trucks. IDK what I'm going to do with the 2 bachmann reefers and the ACF I have, but I may try modifying them as well.

Flip, so you live west of Tallahasee then? I'm in between Pensacola and Panama City

Good morning.  We're having a pretty nice stretch of weather here in New England.  Mid 70s during the day, 50s at night and a few showers but nothing serious.  This is the kind of weather we've had very little of the last few years, going from winter to brutal summer in a day or so.  I'll take it, because I'm fighting with a built-in air conditioner that won't come out of the wall.  There's a metal shroud around the fan that's rusted and split.  Not only does it bang against the fan, it also presses against the top of the sleeve so I can't pull it out.  Bah.  I'm going to have to fabricate some sort of tool to pull on it while I slide the unit out.

I saw those posts yesterday and decided to just stay away.  Still, they were tame in comparison to the old days.  Thanks to our moderators for keeping things under control.  I guess Sherrif Ulrich's jail was a busy place over the weekend.

Wife Penny finally has her new Macbook Air all set up.  The Apple people took in her old desktop PC and transferred all her files, so now she's up and running with her new machine.  Finally, she's got a toy.  Maybe she can understand mine a bit better now. Laugh

Morning All,

We got blasted by thunderstorms last night for about a hour. Power cycled a couple of times but we kept it. Need to do some vacuuming today and caulk outside in a couple of areas. I still want to go see Prometheus today at the movies.

Vincent- Not exactly sure but I believe Phil lives in the general Eustis area.

Todd- I still have my original and my brothers first loco we got as kids. They don't run but I have them.

Ken- If you start vomiting and/or start to have the runs you really need to get to the ER. Prayers for your recovery.

Stourbridge- Take care of yourself and your family and stay safe. Saying prayers for you.

Everyone have a good day and prayers for those in need.

Good morning all.  Haven't been here in a while (a WHILE???  Try almost a YEAR!).    Still adjusting to retirement--it's not easy, for me at least.

We had a pretty light winter up in the mountains, not that much of a snowpack, and we've had a lot of hot, dry wind lately, so I'm hoping that we don't end up with what's going on in Colorado and New Mexico--horrible wildfires.   One plus was that what snow we did have fell late in the season, and there's still some left up in the high country, at least there was a couple of weeks ago when I drove up around Sierra City and Yuba Summit.

Haven't done as much on the MR as I thought I would with retirement--mostly a matter of getting my rear in gear and going out and DOING it.  My under-table Soundtraxx system blew up this spring, and of course it's no longer produced--BUT I did find a repair-person in Flagstaff AZ who said that the systems were definitely repairable.  Took a couple of weeks, but I re-installed it last week (with new speakers) and it works just fine.  Note to self:  This time when you're fooling around with it, READ THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL!  Embarrassed  Gee, what a concept.

Of course right now we're in the middle of Pollen Season, which makes for a lot of fun out in a mostly uninsulated garage.  It's run a train, then run the little car with the vacuum attachment, run another train, run the little car--you get the drift, right?  And I get to do all of this between sneezing fits.  Wink

One thing I have been doing is replacing all of the old magnets in my open-frame motors with the new rare-earth types.  So far I've replaced motors in 2 of my Akane Yellowstones, an Akane AC-8 4-8-8-2, and my 2 big PFM Rio Grande 2-8-8-2's.  My 2 Westside Challengers already have cans in them, so there's no problem there.

One of the reasons I opted for the rare earth magnets instead of converting the locos to cans is that the PFM lokies have an exceptionally strange reduction gear that would entail getting a complete new gearing system from NWSL, and at my age, I don't trust myself pulling drivers and re-gearing.

But I can't believe the difference in the open-frame motors with the new magnets--incredible slow-speed control, HUGE reduction in ampereage, and very quiet motors.  Hardly any noise, even with that 'coffee-grinder' PFM reduction system.   The only thing I have to watch for is that the magnet stacks are in the same polarity, which is a little tricky if you don't get them right.  The locomotive either A: just stares at you when you power it up, or B: runs happily in the OPPOSITE direction, LOL!   But with trial and error and some well-chosen nasty lines from all the Bette Davis movies I've ever watched, the lokies are running just fine.

Here's a photo of the stacks in my Akane AC-8:

As you can see, the motors take about 10 of the little dears, but Micromark has them in cylinders of 20 each, and the price is very reasonable.   So if any of you have some old open-frame motors that need a little resuscitation, I highly recommend the rare earths.  I can thank Darth Santa Fe on the Forum for the information.

Speaking of--wasn't THAT an interesting forum yesterday?  Whoo!  Surprise

Well, time to head out to the garage and do some track-work (I HATE trackwork!) before the breeze comes up and wakes up the pollen.

Best to all, prayers for those in need.

Good morning. It's 82° and partly cloudy. The high will be 95°.

Tired today. I didn't sleep well last night. Some kids down the road were getting loud and seemed they were practicing to break the land speed record for an ATV. I was wondering how fast I could I put six .38 sized holes in the ATV's gas tank with a certain long-barrel German made .38 I have or if maybe I should use arrows instead. Much quieter. Nah, I'm pretty rusty with a bow. It'd have to be the .38. They ceased making noise about 3:30 this morning. I think I'll just rest today as my temper tends to get the better of me when I'm tired. Maybe a general cleanup on the layout later. It's a mess after all the work on the Y6B. As I had figured my handicap problems made working on it a three ring circus. Everything took four times as long as it should have as I have only a few good fingers to work with. The others are just along for the ride and tend to get in the way. Now I know how my grandfather felt when I had to see how everything worked.

Hey Tom!!!  Good to see you back in the diner again.  We have missed you, especially that wonderful piano music you provided.  Yes, it is interesting how much less free time one has in retirement..... LOL  Do hope you are having some fun.  How are your little kitties doing?

Zoe, I got Tom's tab for the day......

Darren, I have been watching the fire out your way.  Looks like a terrible mess!  Hope you are out of the line of danger for it!

Vincent, we once had a next door neighbor when we lived in a trailer park in the Southern Tier of NYS, who liked to have very late and very loud wild parties on Saturday nights from time to time.  I had to be up early Sunday Morning to get to my Church Job.  What we finally did is I put my fairly large sound system in the windows of our living room aimed right at their trailer around 7AM.  Then I got out my recording of Also Sprach Zarathustra by Richard Strause (think the introduction music to 2001: A Space Odyssey) and opened her up wide open.......  Their company got up and left a few minutes later!!!  Several neighbors stopped by in the next few days to grin and give us two thumbs up. The wild parties stopped after that.  Guess we weren't the only ones who were being annoyed!  So just wait until your brother goes to sleep and get even! WhistlingLaugh

Catch you all later!

Lisa and I are well away from the fire itself but depending on which way the wind blows the skies can fill with smoke so having a window open and a fan to bring in the cool night air can bring the smoke in with it.  The fire is now listed at 36,000 acre, zero percent containment

Good Afternoon!

It´s been quiet today in the forum. I received a number of supportive PM´s - feels good!

I went over to my model building friend´s house for a chat. This time I took my camera with me to show you some of his work:

He is scratchbuilding this tug. Although far from being finished, he has done a marvelous job.

Some scenes from his layout:

I wish I had his talent Sigh

Darren - stay safe!

Tom - good to see you here again!
