Evening All,

Went to the club for a couple of hours but did not run anything. I got a sample of the club train orders that we use for ops for the basic format of the ones I am going to do.  We have had several thunderstorms pass through today and I think they say more tomorrow.

Ken- Take care of your big toe. Hopefully the antibiotics will take care of the infection, although it sounds like you need IV antibiotics. I had almost 3 days of IV antibiotics in the hospital. I will say prayers for you.

Jeff- I look forward to seeing the Y6B running.

Everyone have a good night and prayers for those in need.

LSWrr
Been trying to post all day, then I switched to compatibility settings and it finally worked.

I had fits with that compatibility mode with IE8. I switched to Firefox and haven't looked back. I'm using version 12.0.

Hi Janie, how about a RBF please? Just a brief stop in before I head for home. Thanks!

Jeffrey, check your email - should help you with something I heard was a little problem lately. Let me know if you don't see it soon.

Ken, that about sounds like a possible workers' comp. situation with your bum toe...Whistling There isn't a possiblility that your snake eelectrocuted itself, is there? That might explain both the smell and why the fire department guys couldn't find any heat sources when they scoped it out...Oops Hope you find the (dead) snake soon.

Congratulations (belatedly) to you, Bama! Finally got another guy in the house, didja? Thumbs UpBow

Johnboy, can I get back to you about those resin kits?Grumpy Bang Head I'm not sure if it's my newness to resin kits, the epoxy not being equal parts, both, and/or something else, too, but I was NOT happy when trying to put the small roof (and the two small triangular wall pieces) on the 2nd floor entry that you can sorta see in my previous photos of my (so-called) progress on THAT kit. As for the Downtown Deco kit, I used white glue (Elmer's, I think) to glue the four walls together. Be careful to align every corner just as you want them to be, as once the glue soaks in and dries, it's a very good joint there(!). After I had the walls together, I gave them a spray coat of white primer (plain ol' kind from Hobby Lobby or Michael's). I think I used epoxy (or Goo) to glue some square styrene 'rods' along/under where the roof would be going, and then used styrene glue to fasten the roof (cut to fit) in place. My measurement on the roof was a bit off, but I used some Goo to cover any gaps, and once I paint it black (as tar might look), nobody will be the wiser who doesn't read this... I will be gluing a sheet of fine (forget the grit grade, will check when I get home) sandpaper - the tannish colored one - over the roof for a sand/gravel roofing. Of course, it'd be easy to simulate tarpaper with tissue paper strips or masking tape strips and paint those with black paint, too. If you have questions or if anything is missing, the guy who runs Downtown Deco is good about answering emails (check the site for it) and helpful with tips. His directions are pretty decent, too! Thumbs Up Of course, my kit (the Coin-Op Laundry one) is pretty simple - basic rectangle/square shape. The kit includes what looks like Tichy or Grandt Line doors for the front, and it has several shapes that could be used for air conditioners on the roof, or carved some for old, wornout washers or dryers out back in the alley, etc.

Ulrich, great videos - as was said, every bit as good as many others posted in the Forums (and better than I would do)! You've done a very excellent job on your modules. Yeah

Looks like we have a good collection of snake cats, among all the Diners here. Snakes, BEWARE!!

Have been talking with Garry about trying to coordinate my trip there with Duke's, but looks like Duke's will be delayed, so I will see about going by Garry's at a time that w**ks for him (and when I'm off-w**k) and see all the progress he's been making. Ya ready, Garry? Oh, and should I bring a snake knife with me? Smile, Wink & Grin

On that low note, maybe I should slither on out of here....

Blessings and prayers (especially for our missing Diners),

Jim in Cape G.

Time for me to call it a night. The Y6B now runs though the pick-ups are insanely dirty. The tender is too light so that doesn't help either since it's part of the pick-up circuit. All that remains is putting the shell back on. That can be done some other time though. I'm worn out from working on this thing all day. Here's a short video of the test run. See y'all tomorrow.

Evenin' folks!

Just a decaf, Janie.

Jeffrey, you sound like you had some fun today.  Turned out great too!  Nice to see and old worn out loco back on the tracks.  Hope you will let her earn her keep on the layout and not just on a shelf!

Ken, I think we now know what the smell was....... Whistling  Do hope the foot heals up and you don't end up losing the toe!  Keep you in my prayers!

I spent much of the day printing out photos of my classmates who have died over the years.  35 out of class of about 180 are no longer with us as we move towards our 50th. reunion.....

I will be doing docent duty out at the Museum tomorrow.  There are two large groups coming as well as the usual visitors so they have put on a diesel and cabooses.  There will be 4 of us as docents, but I will be the only one there for the entire day.

Best be turning in to get some sleep...

Prayers for all in need.  Sure wish we had some way of contacting Galaxy or his wife to see what is going on with him.....

Howdy everybody.

I opened the thread hoping Galaxy was back, but unfortunately, he is still absent. I hope at least one of you has a way to reach him.

Ken ..... I hope your toe improves soon.

Rob ... Is your toe better.

I suppose we won't see either Ken or Rob performing in the ballet.

Jeff .... Good to see you having fun with the Rivarossi models. I recall working on some several years ago. I could get the parts I needed from a hobby shop in Cincinnati. That shop has been closed now for a few years.  .... It's fun fixing old basket case locomotives.

Cheers.

Hey y'all.  Just stopping in for a RBF before bed.  Got just about everyone in bed right now with the exception of Amy and I.  Wanted to say thank you to everyone for the the well wishes and thoughts for my mom.  She is doing well, getting her strength back and has even been cleared to drive again (not that my dad is going to let her yet....).

Ken: I told Amy about naming Michael Diesel and her reply was a smile and "would our next son be Thomas?"  (Thomas the Tank Engine.....get it!)  Also on the snake issue spread lime around your garage and house and that'll keep snakes out (works outside as a perimeter guard for us).  And you take care of yourself sir, no need to go loosing feet and toes!

Ulrich: I loved the video sir, it was great!  I also think i would follow what Todd said about your heart racing, think of everyone that you see as nekkid, at the very least it'll be funny!

I've got an opinion I wish to get from y'all.  I'm currently thinking of upgrading my service vehicle for my mobile repair business (roadside mechanic service).  Right now I'm using my 76 Chevy pickup as a service truck.  It does the job for transporting my tools, but the issues I have with it are as follows: 1) its starting to show its age and needs to have a complete frame-off restoration done to it at this point (I am the 3rd generation owner/driver), 2) things like my service jack and jack stands are exposed to the elements, and 3) the electrical system in the truck is currently stable, but I am unable to easily add things like a power inverter to run an air compressor and lighting and such.  So here is my two schools of thought on the issue.

Thought process 1 is I get a used cargo van and build permanent shelving and storage inside allowing me to store everything out of the weather and in a more organized fashion than it is now, having a van would also allow me to permanently mount an air compressor and such in it and allow me to run air and power tools due to the ease of being able to mount either a generator/welder, or power inverter in the rear.  Only downsides are that down here, a used cargo van is typically a "used up" cargo van that would require major work to get it road worthy as a regular driver, and if I ever needed to haul my kids around I wouldn't have the room to strap them down.

Thought process 2 is to get a suburban and keep my tools in their current bag form (bag with 3/8s sockets and rachets, bag with 1/2 stuff, bag with wrenches, you get the picture) and mount a smaller compressor in the rear along with a large power inverter which would allow me to run lighting and a compressor without trouble.  If I needed the extra room I could lower the 3rd row of seating and have it, or if i needed to haul the kids or something I could still have the 3rd row up and haul 'em.  I also could/would mount a set of ball bearing rollers in the rear cargo area and mount up a sliding table on it to allow me to simply pop the back doors and slide everything out to work, then slide it back in when done.

What do y'all think on the issue?  I know that I won't be able to do anthing about it until tax season, but with the way this year has been going, it'll be tax time again before I know it.

Welp, I'm off to bed, goodnight everyone!

Bama - Have you thought about a box van that would allow you to mount an air compressor, welder and a generator that was vented to the out side( no carbon monoxide poisining that way ), Would also allow for a work bench with a vise mounted to it. Might check prices to see if you can find a deal on a used one. Otto

Good Morning,

our weather is playing roller coaster these days - a wet morning it is indeed today: June so far has seen more rain than April and May together.

Flo, I am going for a big Sunday breakfast, that´s bacon and eggs, hot cakes, sausages, buttered toast, a glass of OJ and plenty of coffee, please.

Bama & Todd - if I´d follow your advice, I´d either die laughing or crying. The folks around us certainly will not qualify for a beauty contest!

Thanks for the kudos on those two little videos. I know I need to work on the lighting o get sharper pictures. I will have to practice a couple of more times to come with something worth looking at, but that I postpone to the date when I have really finished the modules. Yesterday, I did some research on Japanese private railroads and found out that I need to add a lot of detail. I am thinking of stringing rubber "wire" between the catenary poles and add more line side details.

Have a good one!

Good Morning all,

Did all my running around yesterday so today I can tackle a few projects.  New air filter and fuel filter for the truck, new side yard light, and maybe straighten up the garage a little.

Ulrich, nice videos!

Ken: Check your PM's.

Good morning. It's 72° and cloudy. There's a chance of rain later. The high will be 92°.

Yesterday I got the Y6B running. The drive is somewhat noisy and it can hardly manage a short string of NMRA weighted cars. But it does run now and that's a good starting point for anyone wanting to put in a more powerful motor and clean up the drive. I've done what I set out to do which was to remotor it. Now it can take up it's new career as a shelf queen until I can find it a new home.

Found out yesterday that I need to get a new windshield wiper motor for my van. The old one is lock up so tight I couldn't turn it with a wrench. It wouldn't budge at all. The replacement is around $30 so it looks like saving time again until I get enough money together to get it. Problem is life keeps getting in the way. Every time I get some money saved up I need to use it some other thing of importance. One of those right now is to get my new Magicjack Plus working properly so I can have phone service without having to have the computer on all the time. My father let me keep the money I normally would have used to reimburse him for paying my electric bill and car insurance to get that done. I have the new Magicjack but now I need a router to connect it to. I ordered one yesterday so I only have less than $10 left now. Oh well, I have a birthday coming up next month so maybe one or more of the other family members will chip in. Meanwhile I'll have to avoid driving on rainy days.

Good morning, Chloe.  I will have a large black coffee and a waffle, please.

We did our errands in town yesterday, so we can spend time around the place today.  I still haven't mowed the lawn.  The power was out probably to the high winds yesterday.  A funny thing that the sun was shining, too.   We will get some operations today on our layout.  Fun.

Rob,  How are all your critters doing?  I bet they keep you busy.

Curt,  Sounds like you are doing better.

Barry,  I hope you are feeling better.

Later,  Sue

I buy.

I know about the no work scene. I haven't been able to work since 2004. I had some temporary employment at a wood shop after 2005 but I kept landing in the hospital.

Morning All,

Sitting here drinking coffee and reading the forums. I don't think I have much planned for today. I may try to run trains later or work on some train orders. I think we are supposed to get rain again today. Actually slept pretty decent last night for a change.

Jeff- I had no doubt that once you started you would get the Y6B running.

Ken- Glad to hear your toe looks better today.

Everyone take care and prayers for those in need.

Italian roast coffee in a SOUTHERN mug, please.

***Sue, critters are all fine and yes, they do keep me busy. Seriously could use about 4 clones these days.

***Garry, toe is better, but still far from 100%. Color is almost normal, although it may be permanently larger? I'm not taping it anymore and am back to wearing shoes and boots outside.

Rained a good bit here this morning. Good for the pastures. Sun is trying to peek out now as I type. With a nice cool breeze, it sure doesn't feel like summer today.

Have a great day all.

Cheers! Cowboy Rob

 Afternoon Folks

 Flo, Diet Dew

Well the toe looks about the same as yesterday night. Take my next pill around 2:00 PM.

Getting ready to try and get the RSD 15 back on the tracks. I just might make a little headway on clearing out the RIP track. Next I will try to get the 2-10-2 to stop speaking like a Hamster Wheel. Shame, it is such a good running engine.

Jeffery sent me a PM? WhistlingI wonder what that might be about?

Hello Gang. Went back on the forums and found a link to Galaxy. Sent him a p.m. to get in touch with us .

WOW!!! Awesome posts. Keep those pictures coming.  Hate reading about all the pains many of you are putting up with.  After three days of rain got to mow the jungle. Wish I could afford a lawn service.

Prayers for all.

Afternoon guys

Work went alright. 2 people have quit in the past few days and I get to cover for them. At least I'll make overtime, so I'll have some extra money.

It's still raining, and I'm kinda tired already. So I don't think I'm going to be messing with my trains today.

Jeff, Good job on getting the Y6B running. I wonder how hard it would be to add weight to it. As far as winshield wiper motors, you could try a junkyard find, but $30 isn't too bad for a new one IMO.

Barry, When I build a layout, I'm thinking of having a bridge be the highest point, going over a door. That way one can walk under the trains. Of course, that's a bit of a ways away. I'd wanna buy my own house before I built a permanent layout. I might build modules when I get my own place.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Hi Fellas

Wow,a warm one here today. It was 95f feeling closer to 100f. I spent the part of the morning cleaning up the gardens and plan on cutting the grass tomorrow, its funny 2 weeks ago it looked like hay because it was so dry but after a few days of decent rainfall its nice and green and thick again. I will cut it in the morning as there calling for another scorcher tomorrow.

In the afternoon I came in and turn the central air on and sat down to watch the Canadian GP, F1 is my fav sport so it was nice to have the grand prix on in the afternoon as appose to the usual 2pm European time  (8am for us here in N.America). Had some pizza for dinner and plan on going into the basement later to work on some weathering, my upstairs is nice and cool ( well the sun is pounding on the living room windows so its not as cool as the rest of the house, I miss having our huge maple tree because it offered alot of shade on the house during the late day sun. ) so I can only imagine the basement is cold.

Take care

 Evening Folks

Flo, I will take a Beer and the snake will have a Drinks

Anyone want to guess how long it took to install decoder in the Blue Line RSD 15? This should be simple, maybe 15 minutes. But Nooooooooooooooo, it took 2 hours and was a plug in decoder! First I have to uses a old E 6 to program the DN143IP decoder it is a board type no wires. Plug it in to the RSD 15, ran backwards. (that should have been a clue) Test ran it with out the shell, sound and motor drive worked great. Was not happy with the way the decoder fit, but it ran. Then for the heck of it I tried the engine on my PR 3 (with out the DN143IP) and it read the sound decoder, great! Read the CV's, that odd, says address is 99, not 98 which is the cab address?

So I changed that (boy was that a mistake) installed the DN143IP and it ran, but no sound? Changed the address of the sound decoder to 99, still no sound? Used decoder pro to set to default, showed up as a 4 and not 3 like it should?

Hooked up the DB 150 to the program track mode and did a blast program for the address. Gave it a test run and both motor and sound worked! Yea, but the thrill was short lived. Installed the shell and only the sound worked! Pulled the shell, DN143IP was laying in the shell. I knew I did not like the way the decoder fitted, seems when I put the shell on, it popped the decode out of the socket! Bang Head

Tried to plug the decoder in the other way but the plug for the lights was in the way? On Blue line you can uses socket 1 so the sound decoder runs the lights (is anyone reading this? I won't) or use socket 7 so the motor decoder runs the lights. Checked the fit, it will work then installed the DN143IP back into the E 6 and changed the direction of the motor decoder. If you are reading this you are real board! Hang on, layout just shut down dang nap it.

Installed the decoder and it runs like a dream again till it picked a turnout a few minutes ago.

Flip have you heard back from Galaxy?

Well I am hitting all the wrong buttons on the keyboard, so I am out of here.

Evening, Flo - how about a hot fudge brownie a la mode, please, with a Santa Fe mug of coffee. Thank you!

Bama, I have no experience on either suggestion (so take my suggestion for what it's worth...), but if you haul the kids very often, choice #2 sounds like it would cover that (with that roll-out idea you mentioned for your w**k needs).

Barry, hope you get rested up from your hospital detour, and soon enough do NOT need to have the mask to go outside. (Cabin fever can be its own pain to deal with)

Jeff, there are some jobs (MRR or otherwise) that - after you've been trying for a while to get them done - you need a break from! Whistling (...and I can think of a couple of my own like that...)

Ulrich, on your layout videos, keep in mind some of what Pelle Søeberg said in one of his books about having a level of (I think the term he used was) 'plausible believeability' - not having perfectly, exactly correct-to-prototype details, etc., but enough that the viewer's eye fills in the rest for you. Much less effort involved that way (IMHO). Most people who haven't been employed on a Japanese RR will not know all the details that can be seen in photos, for example (I wouldn't). Nice "Ken the Snake Hunter" video...Whistling Hmm..looks like one rant (still open) and two locked threads (that I saw..). Rest up, Ulrich - tomorrow is another day - or maybe you and Crandall and/or other moderators could take turns...?

Ken, keep taking care of your toe there. Yeah Good to hear of the improvement. And I like that pine-covered hillside photo that Barry mentioned, too. Thumbs Up That from your layout (current or past one)? Looks like you are having a day like Jeff did, except with your decoder. Sigh

TDK6060 (Harry) - some of those steamers are nice, all right, but they also require bigger radius curves to run on (which I don't have on my layout), so even if I had the funds, I won't be getting anything bigger than my (used) Genesis Mikado for my RR. (My $0.02...)

Flip, glad you found a way to try to contact Galaxy. Now, if somebody had a phone that they could call him on, might be really able to ease our minds about G. Oh, and good luck with your jungle-whacking, Flip!

Broadway, some nice photos in your thread out there, I might say. Thumbs Up

Sue, I like Larry's painting - the colors and the composition especially (and you can tell him so - please do!)! Bow

Looks like our NOTB Diners are getting a heat wave today. Wow Here, we only reached the mid-80's (F), cloud cover kept the temps down some. S'pposed to have possibility of rain, but this morning's forecast looked like most of it would be south of us, so you may want to watch for some rain, Jeff, Rob, Bama and our other Southern Diners. Tomorrow we might get a better chance of rain. We'll see...

Well (fairly dry down there - think I heard the frogs complaining), after looking at some of the building kits and such that I have awaiting assembly, I was thinking I need to get out some paper and see about re-examining my future thoughts about the CAW RR. No way that I can see to fit all the structures, even in a spare room-sized layout (And I'm not adept enough to come up with a multi-deck trackplan...) Case of my eyes being larger than my available (heck, maybe even than my future available) space for the layout. Sigh Back to ye olde drawing boarde...

WIll be heading for home soon, and see about doing some hand-painting on the post office/print shop building, maybe some weathering on the Co-op Coin Laundry, too.

Looks like prayers for healing and comfort are definitely in order around the Diner lately. Consider them said, and a prayer candle lit for them, as well as in honor of our missing Galaxy.

Blessings,

Jim in Cape G.
