Garry!

Car pools - very funny!Laugh

One time I got caught in a huge downpour in Ottawa right in front of the Parliament Buildings with the top down. Traffic was slow so I was sitting there getting soaked. Fortunately I was staying at the Chateau Laurier hotel which was right next door. When I finally got to the hotel covered parking lot I blew past the parking attendant - no way was I stopping to keep him happy. I looked like a drowned rat when I went up to my room. That got some stares from the upper crust clientele.Laugh

The next day when I went down to get in the car the seats were swollen up like footballs! I won't tell you what sounds the driver's seat made when I sat on itEmbarrassed

I'd love to have another MG but I would have to lose 60 pounds to get behind the wheel. Hey now! That sounds like one heck of a diet plan!

Dave

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

 Evening Folks!

Flo, 2 beers please, one for me and one for the snake. Beer

Well as usual my day sucked. After work I had to go to the grocery and did not get home to 10.00. My paycheck is messed up and was around 11 hours short, about 5 where overtime.

Snake Front.  Dewitt next door sure not help my cause. Seems Susie told Dewitt about the snake. He told a few days ago he watched a 5 foot snake crawling through the grass heading to our yard. Gee Dewitt thanks a whole lot!

Hum Snake Cats? I might need some of them.

Jeffery I sent you a PM. I wonder what it might be about? Whistling

 Later, Ken

Good Morning,

the day seems to turn into a pleasant one today - at least in terms of the weather. Got up quite early and spent the morning researching sources for the materials I need to finish the two modules I am working on. The bad thing is, that I don´t get that stuff in Germany and ordering in Japan is always a little bit of a hassle.

I also made a little video of my layout to share with you:

watch?feature=playerdetailpage&v=nYpECFocVeA

This is my first attempt, so I don´t know whether it´ll be showing here. The quality will not be the best.

... and another try:

Have a good day!

Morning All,

Slept fairly well last night and am sitting here drinking a coffee. I was cleared to return to work by the Infectious Disease doc yesterday. She looked at the surgical site and said it is healing very nicely. I finished the last of the antibiotics yesterday so I am happy about that. I see the surgeon on Friday and expect to be back to work on Sunday the 17th. Of course the 17th is not only Fathers Day but our 34th wedding anniversary.

Ken- I can't imagine what you need to talk to Jeff aboutWhistling. My psychic ball says a steam locomotive consist.

Ulrich- I enjoyed the videos. They are as good or better than anything I have done and the modeling is great.

I think everybody needs to send their snake cats to FL. There are plenty of snakes to go around. Just stay away from South Florida. The constrictor snake issue there is not to be taken lightly.

Everyone have a good day and prayers for those in need..

Good morning, Chloe.  I will have my large black coffee before I run.

I am so glad to live in western Washington.  The only SNAKES we have are the tiny little garder  variety.  Not an issue, just a startling incident.  Unfortunately, the best climbing is in eastern Washington and Oregon.

I have been enjoying all the loco photos. Keep on posting.

I confess I have been spending too much time quilting.  There is a serious push this time of year at my local sewing store.  At least we regularly do the operations.

Italian roast coffee in a UNION PACIFIC mug, please.

***Sue, it was in Eastern Washington where for only the second time in my life (first was back in AZ) I nearly stepped on a rattle snake. Sounded like a huge sprinkler being turned on down by my foot. Fortunately, it let me get away.

Some nice pics & videos being posted I see.Thumbs Up

Healing thoughts to those in need. Have a good day all.

Waiting for the Fire Department to show up, smell something odd and want to make sure I don't have some melting wiring in the garage.

Good move Ken. Really the smartest thing to do. We had a family out here some years ago who kept smelling something like hot wires in their home but they couldn't find the cause. Three days later they started smelling something like melting plastic. The electrician couldn't find anything and suggested they get the fire dept to come in and look. So three of our guys went and looked and couldn't see anything so it to be behind something. They located the place it was strongest and had to rip out part of the wall but they found it. Seems that sometime in the past someone had replaced a length of 12-3 household wiring with two of those orange outdoor extension cords and now they were melting. The family had recently gotten a new microwave oven that was much bigger than the old one and it was plugged in on that circuit. Two or three more days and they would have had a fire. With the amount of work it took our guys just to get to the problem it would have been bad. Add to that the cord ran right underneath the gas pipe for the kitchen it could have been catastrophic. All because somebody took a stupid short cut instead of doing it right the first time.

Good morning. It's 71°. The high will be 87°. It's mostly cloudy. There's a 40% chance of rain this morning increasing to 60% this afternoon. Locally heavy rainfall is possible.

It's been crazy here. The power went out twice last night and at least three times this morning that I know of.The last time it was out for nearly an hour. Looks like the cable company got their problem fixed. The cable service came back on when the power did for a change.

I got my new Magicjack Plus yesterday. Right now I have it plugged into a USB port. I tried running it through my modem yesterday but the modem won't see more than one device. So I have to get a router to plug it into so I can use it without the computer.

Looking at the Rivarossi Y6B I'm wondering whether I should remotor it or just use it to hold down a display shelf. I had it apart yesterday for a preliminary exam just to see what's wrong with it. Looks like just the motor. I have an old Rivarossi U25C chassis that has a motor that works and it looks like the same type. I put the loco back together last night so Murphy couldn't find a way to scatter the parts all over creation. Here's my problem. I have severe nerve damage and my hands don't work so well anymore. Tearing the loco down and putting it back together was a major chore. Handling the small parts was a terror. I have to watch what I'm doing extremely carefully as I can't feel the parts and could lose or break them quite easily. I'm seriously considering not fixing it. The problems that arose from these nerve problems were the main reason I got away from steam in the first place. I could no longer fix them without it becoming a three ring circus. I'll look at it today and judge whether I should fix it or leave it as is.

 Morning From Snake-ville IL

 Flo, Big Cup of coffee.

Fire Department just left and they could find nothing wrong. The order (when you smell something) is really odd, like nothing I smelled before. I know all the smells of the chemical I keep here in the Garage / Snake Room so I wanted to be safe. They used a Thermal Imaging Camera to look for hot spots and found nothing out of the ordinary.

First thing Sue told the Fire Fighters when she open the door was there a Snake in the garage. So while they where out here I asked if the camera would pick up the snake if it was still here. They said it would but they could not find hide or scale of the snake.

When they left, they told Sue they could not find anything wrong nor could they find the snake. She was shaking and crying she is so worried about the snake. She did not buy for one minute that the snake might have left the garage! If I cannot find the snake, guess I will have to buy a rubber one and cut off it's head to make her feel better!

Got to get ready for work.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a short stack of Blueberry Pancakes w/ real Maple Syrup, and a cup of dark roast coffee in my Steamtown mug to start the day.

Ken...  5 foot long snake?  Thought you said a little one? LOL  That would be a bit bigger than even Man´t could handle I think!  Now down where Curt Lives, those little snakes they got are a prime reason kitties come up missing!

I see we are still on an excursion by the looks of things out the window.  You know PA has some beautiful countryside!

Catch you all later!

I've got the Y6B opened up and pulled the motor out. SO far it looks promising. I still have to compare the motor to the other one I have to see if they're the same. If they are it'll be a simple change out. If not I'll have to get imaginative. I tested the motor after pulling it out and my original diagnosis stands. It's dead, dead, DEAD.

To those emailing me about doing repairs on your steamers, please stop. I don't do that kind of work. I'm working on this one because it's mine and I'm not afraid of breaking it. If I break it I haven't lost anything.

Good Morning!!!

BBQ pulled pork sandwich please and a Dah-tuh Pep-puh thank you.

HmmOdd I pull up and get on a stationary rail car, but when I get inside it’s moving. This is one enchanted diner. Pretty scenery though

B-lion- Love the snake bus!!!

Johnboy-  Boy you don’t have to convince me of the aches and pains associated with growing older. And I’m not that old…. Just …..25…Whistling   Anyway, hope the leg and knee get better. I have bad knees myself, something about the “cushion being worn away”. Came from all those years of running and squatting. I told Doc that millions of people do it all the time. His response was calmly, “well, some people just aren’t built for it”

Ulrich- Here’s a thought. Treat it like stage fright. When you go out, imagine everyone naked. Saw that in an episode of the Partridge Family. HmmWonder why I thought of that show.  Anyway, it may not work but it will make the trips more interesting especially as it pertains to some of the FrauleinsWink. I don’t know if I would tell Petra about your new found cure though. Nice video by the way.

Ken- Tell Sue that a snake is not an indoor animal. It came inside to search for food, probably found nothing (stray Cheetos don’t count as food to a snake) and left. Similar to a restaurant that has ran out of food. You leave. Unless of course the sanctity of the Train/snake room is enjoyable. Then I’d say I heard something rustling around behind a cabinet or something. Then, place a rope, the raw hemp kind, across the door threshold and tell here a snake will not cross it because of the roughness. This will keep the snake out of the house. Then…..enjoy.

Well (I know, I know. Awfully deep subject for such a shallow mind) more odds and ends to do. Top o the list is I’m gonna clean the gutter downspout out onh the South side of the garage so that water can once again drain should it ever decide to rain again. Brenda is also cleaning out her room so that means she will be asking me if I want or know about preeeetty much everything she touches. (Good part of the reason I'm so late stopping in) Which also means I’ll be using the words “what?”...”I don’t know”….”No”… “not mine” and “I don’t care” an incredible amount of times today.

Uh oh. I think I hear Ziva in the living room. Maybe the gutter can wait.

Ya’ll have a good day!!!!

Well somehow I knew this wasn't going to be a simple motor change out. The motor from the U25C is near identical to the one from the Y6B. However, Murphy has spoken! The shafts are different. The shaft of the Y6B's motor is rectangular and the shaft of the motor from the U25C is round. Looks like I'll be doing some filing. First though I'll tape over all the openings on the motor so no filings can get into it. Maybe I can get a running loco out of this after all.

Just did a test with the new motor (yeah right! It's only around thirty years old!) held in place by my fingers. The motor runs and all the drive wheels appear to be turning. I've discovered though that the screws that held the original motor won't work with this one as the holes are in the wrong places and I'm not about to drill a couple of holes in the front of the motor. So I'll have to use some JB Weld to hold the motor in place. That's gonna be loads of fun for anybody who decides to pull it out. There's also a shaft bushing that will have to be filed back some to fit on the new shaft. It keeps the shaft coupling from moving back and forth. Looks like there's light at the end of the tunnel.

 Afternoon Folks

 Flo, Beer Please.

Was it a good day, or a bad day today? Well, no smoking wires, no snake just the funny smell so I guess that was the good part. Plus I took the day off, now for the bad part.

I have no spoke about it here, we have sufficient people with health problems at the dinner. With me standing a lot at work I started getting some nasty callouses on my feet and my big toes. I started filing them down and the one on the left foot looks fine. One on the right big toe had been kinda of blacking looking for the last 3 months or so. Looked like there was a blood blister under the callous and did not think anything of it till a few days ago.

That is when I saw there was a open lesion on the bottom of the toe, started using some cream we had around the house. I want to go see the Dr but I have no health insurances and Shaddy needed to go to the vet. So Shaddy went to the Vet and I hoped for the best.

Today after the Fire Department folks left I started to get ready for work. Looked at the toe, it looked like a big old bratwurst, the other side was swelling and the open lesion was the sizes of a dime. Ick! So I went into work and told Dave I need the day off, offered to show him the toe (he declined) and he told me to go!

High tailed it to Anderson Hospital Clinic. They gave me a shoot in the bum, gave me two Antibiotic prescriptions and told me to see my Doctor Monday so she can set up a appointment with a Surgeon? Seems I stand a good chances of losing the big toe? If the antibiotic work well I might be able to keep it, but it has a real bad infection.

I was told the reason it did not cause any pain is because I am diabetic, while I still have feeling in my feet, I don't have all the feeling I should. If I was not diabetic it would been hurting like a SOB a few months ago.

So only time will tell. Looks like the few goodies I picked up at K-10 Model Trains have to go back. My med's where $279.00, the cost of a EM 1 I been wanting. Sigh Personally, I think I would enjoy the EM 1 more than my right big toe, after all I have had the big toe for 56 years! Laugh

So I guess it was a good day. I went to see a doctor, the infection could have killed me.

See you all later, time to run trains and look for snakes. Hope it bites me in the right big toe, that will kill it!

Ken

Afternoon guys

Well today has been wet. It pretty much been raining all day, with the occasional heavy rain. Tomorrow's forecast is the same. After work I went and picked up that new power cable for my Xbox, and then went to the LHS (which is next to the place where I bought my cable). I picked up the styrene I ordered, and there will be plenty to shim that GP5. I was a bit of a bad boy and picked up 2 bachmann cylindrical hoppers, but I forgot to get some squadron putty and thin CA. Guess I'll go sometime next week and pick it up.

I've already gotten both of those hoppers to the right weight, and got one converted to athearn trucks. (lots of filling to the area where the truck mounts) I ran out of screws for the 2nd (I could cut some longer screws, but my screw cutter is loaned out at the moment). The athearn trucks lowered it enough that even with 36" wheels, it is low. Looks like I have to get some Kadee #147s because I don't think I can get a kadee centering spring in the bachmann box. I figure after weathering these they'll look pretty decent.

Jeff, Can you turn the motor to get the screws to line up? I'm wondering if you get that Y6B running, are you actually going to run it or shelf it? The rivarossi motor you've shown is far different than the one I have. The one I have is round, has shafts on both ends (although one has been cut and rounded off) and looks almost like a shortened can motor.

Ken: What you described there is a pressure there. Many diabetics get them all the time and they can get infected at the drop of a hat. I have two on the train wreck that used to be my right foot and they're a constant item of concern for me. I have to keep them bandaged and padded and twice a week I wash them down with 91% alcohol. Now you know how I always have a good supply of the stuff on hand. Pressure sores require near constant attention and good responsible care. Not doing so could cost you your entire foot. Gee, how would I know that?

Vincent: No, I can't turn the motor to line up the holes. The motor is situated with shaft off center on the engineers side as the drive shaft runs down the right side of the loco chassis. The screw holes are exactly ninety degrees out of line. Holes in chassis are horizontal and the holes in the motor are vertical and none of them come anywhere close to meeting. The motor you describe sounds like the one in my Rivarossi 4-8-4 #838.

Jeff, the motor and the mount in the northern looks the same as the one in my U25C, although the motor there might be longer. My U25C is in pieces because it has issues with power pick-ups (one truck from one side, the other side from the other truck) and pie-cutter flanges. Whenever I find the upgrade kit Kaslo made for it, it's gonna be a project loco.

Yep. Some Dr Scholls cushioned insoles will help a bit but you'll likely have to keep a soft pad under that toe too. Mine got out of control when I was a security guard and was on rounds for eleven out of twelve hours a shift. I lost all the skin off the bottoms of both feet. I kept them wrapped and kept up the work. I wasn't known for letting some discomfort stop me.

Vincent: Your U25C is probably newer than mine. It's a 70's model with brass gearing and hex shaft drive. Pickup is from the left rail on one truck and the right rail on the other truck.

Each year before I go on vacation I make a brochure of my railroad to take with me and hand them out to people I meet. You may download a copy of it here. It is supposed to print on both sides of an 11x17 sheet of paper (short edge). Of course it looks almost just as fine on the 'puter box.

The new motor has been mounted and tested in place to adjust it for optimum operation before the JB Weld dries. All that remains is reattaching the wires and putting the shell and cab back on.

Speaking of motors, I need a new windshield wiper motor for my van. The old one finally gave out. It's locked up tighter than a paint bottle cap glued shut with epoxy. Don't think that's tight? Give it a try sometime.

Good Morning all,

Johnboy, the snakes aren’t bad as long as they remain under glass!

Jeff, I really like the looks of that N&W Mallet.  Those Rivarossi locomotives are a dream to convert to DCC since they are electrically isolated between the front and rear drivers.

Been trying to post all day, then I switched to compatibility settings and it finally worked.
