Good Morning Diners!
It has been a few weeks since I've been in but I'm ready for some bacon and eggs Chloe and a big pot of coffee please. My wife is doing fairly well considering but she has her rough days too but I expect that with time it will get better.
This has certainly been a busy place in the past few weeks.
Garry, that was quite a scare you gave us and certainly me but I'm glad to hear you are on the mend. Thank God for modern technology. I find that just watching a train wiz down the tracks is very theraputic but then there is always the temptation to adjust something or you get caught with a " Say that would look better if I just " . Resist all such temptation, just watch the trains and relax !
Jeff, I hope you Mum is doing well with her knee. I know a few people who have gone through that and while it seems it is a bit painful at first, it does get much better later. Lucky she has you to help look after her.
Tom, I can imagine how maddening your "trip" was and how painful, Ouch! I haven't gone through a table but I have had a few close calls tripping over one of our dogs who like to nap in hallways or other convenient locations. Perhaps that BLI loco will have an accident itself--maybe a derail on your high trestle or too much speed near the edge of the layout causing a plunge to concrete. I think it's an evil engine and should be handled accordingly.
JP, congrats on the house. I looked at it on your link and it seems like a nice one. A very exciting time moving into a new home.
Rob, good to hear your new home is coming along. It really is a case of having to watch those contractors to stop them from cutting corners. Good thing you can be there to see what they are up to.
and Ryan, that was great news about your father. You certainly have had a stressful time the past few weeks so I think some R&R is in order. Does cold beer and train operation go together?
We've had some odd weather here the past week with temps in the high 80's and then down to the 40's last night but it is supposed to warm up again. Wish I could send some of our rain down to you Rob, but I think it is just a little too far.
Well I think I'll just sit in a booth and tuck into those eggs and bacon that Chloe has just brought out from the kitchen.
Talk to you soon,
CN Charlie
Afternoon, Flo - I'll have a root beer float, please.
Oh, - PC's buying? In that case, I'll have the steak dinner, too...
Thanks, PC! And have fun on the lake!
Tom, that was not a good day for you (on top of listening to your Mom's gripin'... Did I say that outloud?) Glad that they were able to get you patched up at the ER. Maybe you can milk the game leg for some extra good behavior from your students and sympathy from your co-workers at school next week. Are you in a wheelchair or on crutches? - Do you want to rent a wheelchair? Hey, don't blame the poor loco box... or didn't you like Mountains to begin with? Heal up, Lowell and Spooky are counting on ya. (You're sure neither of them tripped you because you were running late with their food, right?)

Garsh, you're makin' us blush... Garry, that's a good sign, if you're able to get to the layout now. As JP said, don't overdo, but then again, you're not (re)doing buttes or such like Tom was.
JP, one hazard of dating someone from your building might be that if you break up, she knows where you live and can watch who you're going out with then... (Maybe don't tell her where the house is located?...) Sounds like you all had a good time at the fair, anyway. Keep us posted on the house progress.
Paul, you might ask your vet what he/she think might've been the cause of Daisy's shenanigans last night. Sounds from your description like she might've been in some discomfort. Good going on your flatcars. I'd be inclined to say to go with a couple of lines, maybe one in black and the other in boxcar red? My
Jerry, I answered your PM, and will let you know once things are ready on that. I'll give you a big fat 'AMEN!' about the Cards lately. They'd better get going, at this point in the season it's getting late.
Yep, Jeff, that's the Scout motto, all right. So - if that was our front that headed south, you still have Faye to await, huh? Oh, goody (NOT)! Better make things snug and tied down (for sure on anything that could float away), with Faye still on the way.
Goodness, you Diners were a bunch of night owls last night, judging from the times you were posting. If it were one of our insomniacs like Rob, I could understand it, but it wasn't (last night, anyway). Rob, how's your sleep been lately? Should I take it from your not mentioning it, that you're doing better in that department? Hope so.
CN Charlie, your weather just sounds like fall for us in our area. Makes it difficult to figure how to dress for the day, when it's only 45 or 50F in the morning as you're heading out (but you know it's gonna get into the 80's by afternoon). Hey, if we didn't have the weather to complain about, it'd be something else, huh? You're right about the therapeutic benefits of running the trains. (Not sure on the mixing beer and doing that - depends on how close to the edges your tracks run...)
I'll join Jerry and the bunch in the back booth, since I don't think the peddler freight's due for a couple of hours yet. Then I want a seat in the window booth, guys.
Blessings and a fun afternoon,
Jim in Cape Girardeau

Hello ....
I'm hoping Tom W is recovering from that injury.
It's good that CN Charlie could join the diner again. Also, I'm glad to see the dependable regulars such as Jeff and many others here.
There's still very little to report on the layout. Here's the "rest of the story" on my first run train, the GN passenger train. My friend Gus has had some "gremlins" disrupting his operations with electrial problems in the past couple of weeks. Evidently, one of his gremlins visted my layout, too. The train had been running smoothly and had already traveled over a certain section of track without incident. Then, I ran it on another trip with the thottle at a fast speed. Suddenly the train stopped on a dead spot on the mainline behind the brewery. This is one of my first sections of track to be completed and it has been trouble-free for years. I soldered an extra feeder wire, and that fixed the trouble, However, the GN 4-8-2 needs repairs becasue the abrupt stop casued the motor to disconnect from the drive train. It's now on the rip track awaiting repairs, and the train now has diesels.
That's all i've done on the layout. As for me, I rst a lot with long naps. i also am phasing in my walking exercise program.
Again, thanks everybody for your thoughts.

Afternoon, all.
103 out here in SunnyCal today, so obviously I'm not out in the garage working on the Buttes (or anything else). Leg feels a little better today, it's not leaking like it did yesterday. I'm usually a quick healer, so we'll see what I'm walking like when school starts this Thursday. No wheelchairs or crutches. But changing the bandages every day is a little--shall we say--'Gory?' And those stitches--man, my knee looks like Baron Frankenstein got hold of it, LOL!
Garry--glad you're doing well--just take it easy, buddy. I noticed that pretty GN 4-8-2 of yours in your photo. Is that possibly a Spectrum or maybe one of the IHC's? Sorry that abrupt stop caused your drive train to go blooey on you. Hopefully it's an easy fix. Speaking of GN's, I just heard my Z-6 should be in in late September or early October. I'm sure you'll hear the shout when I open the box, even from way out here in Sacramento, LOL! But again, just take it easy and a step at a time. We NEED you, friend! And look at it this way, you don't have to lean over on a Creeper and finish BUTTES!
Jeff: Hope that the storm that's 'adopted' Florida runs out of steam--and water--before it hits Louisiana. Dang, the LAST thing you people need is another flood! PS: I sure liked that photo in this week's WPF. GREAT shot!
Well, that's about it from SunnyCal--Lowell's up to almost four jars of Gerber's Lamb baby food, and he's been sniffing around Spooky's hard food the past couple of days. Had him at the vet on Thursday, and he accidentally got 50cc's of extra liquid, and it seemed to do him a world of good. So we've upped him by 50cc's a day now--the vet said it couldn't hurt. I'm not sure, but I think I felt some rejuvinated muscle tone this morning when I petted him (for his usual 45 minutes). That one kidney he's got left might just be holding pretty well. We'll have to see. Maybe God and St. Francis don't need him quite yet. That would be cool.
Well, time to elevate the leg a little and then watch the closing cermonies of the Olympics. I understand that our boy Michael is going to be taking part. Kid's such a nice Goof, but Holy Cow, I still think he has fins and gills. Next week, from the Sublime to the--what? The Conventions start. Think I'll watch a lot of old movies .
Best to all, prayers to those in need

***Jim, there is still much room for improvement in the zzzz's dept.
***Garry, a bit surprised to hear about the motor of your 4-8-2 disconnecting. Guess those kind of things happen. Hope it isn't on the rip track for long.
I had to pull and two posts and re-dig the holes, as they simply were not up to "rock solid" standards. Tried using the tractors post hole digger, but it just bounced off the cement. Soooo, I had at it with a sledge hammer and eventually got the holes dug back out. Also dug out a few more holes and got a good start on the heavy framework for the front porch. Had to remove the old steps, too. Between that and the barn work (plus extra horse in a stall to pick up after, feed and water), I am entirely exhausted tonight. Told wife I must take tomorrow off, or I'll end up in bad shape. Pushed much harder than I know I should have already. Going to go recline awhile.
Looks like a rain storm may be on it's way here. Crossing all my fingers and toes it holds together.
Rob
Good Evening Diners!
Turned out to be a really nice day here even though it only got up to 21C or about 68F. We went out ot a pet store here and I can't believe it but we actually bought a stroller for Jamie. With his arthritis and other problems, he can't walk much so my wife said we had to get one so we could take him out . Just got back from a walk with him in it and he seemed to be enjoying himself. Must admit that I felt a little funny pushing it but what the heck.
Last night we went out to dinner to celebrate my wife's birthday. We went to the French restaurant where she is volunteering on Thursdays. I know it sounds odd to volunteer working at a restaurant but she really enjoys it and as she says, where else can she learn for free from a master chef. I had mussels for a starter as I really do enjoy them. Normally the ones we get are from New Brunswick or P.E.I. but these came from the Mediterranean. They were really good! I don't think I've ever seen such large ones before. For the main course I had Arctic Char in a saffron sauce. For those to the south who may not be familiar with this fish, it comes from the Northwest Territories, i.e., the far north and is a type of fresh water salmon. Very fine eating indeed. Say, what happened to the font? Oh well, so much for that change.
I ran a passenger train the other day, first running in a month. It was great to see it going round and around and around. It was a string of Athearn CN heavyweights pulled by a Spectrum light mountain. I have an MRC sound decoder in it and I think it works very well. I especially like the whistle which I find is easy to modulate unlike the Tsunami in my Consolidation. I got out a couple of kits, a flat car and a tanker that I got a couple of months ago. The tanker is a Red Caboose Sunoco tank car that was tough to find but as I worked for them many years ago, I wanted one. The flat car I ordered as although it is Santa Fe I thought that was OK until I got it and discouvered it is a MOW car that is bright silver. To the paint shop it goes. I can't believe how tough it is to get short flat cars.
Oh, Oh, only a couple of minutes until Masterpiece Theatre so I'll sign off now.

Happy B'day (belated) to Mrs. CN Charlie.
Terry .......... thanks much.
Tom. Thanks much to you, too. The GN 4-8-2 is a "close enough" model. Its a Bachmann Spectrum C&O model that is re-lettered for GN. Looks good hauling my GN heavy weight equipment.
Happy Model Railroading
Evening Gang: It's been a busy day here. We hauled all the stuff from the kids storage unit to the new house. That was two loads with the pick up and the 14ft dump trailer. Some of Rob's tools weigh a ton. The rest of there things will be delievered Friday.
Daisy is just fine today. I think that her harness may have gotton tight. Anyway she is her usual self.
Garry good to see that you are still getting along. Just take it easy.
Rob I hope that the horse is getting better. A hoof creak is nothing to be taken lightly. I have known horses to be put down for that. I'm sure that is not an option with you though.
I heard today that the cement carrier boat E.M. Ford is going to be scrapped. It is the oldest boat on the Great Lakes. It was built in 1897 as the Prequesc Isle ( check the spelling ) for the Cleveland Cliffs Co as a bulk freighter. About 1950 she was converted to a bulk cement carrier and has been used as a storage barge in several ports for the last decade or so. The owners have tried to find someone or group that would take her for preservation but no one has steeped forward. She has the last quarduple expansion steam engine on the lakes. It'll be sad to see her go.
Well it's past my bed time. The oldest granddaughter starts school tomorrow. She'll be in the 7th grade. She's a little apprensive about it but I'm sure that things wil turn out fine. The 2yr old starts pre-school next week. We have to take her to orientation Thursday afternoon.
Good Night All
Garry--
Guess what, I've got a GN kinda/sorta P-2 myself (actually I have about four GN locos including an absolutely AWESOME PFM S-1 4-8-4--GN has trackage rights on the Yuba River Sub from time to time and I really like their locos), only mine's an IHC. Sweet little loco and a really nice puller. Hope your kinda/sorta P-2 gets fixed really soon. I've got a couple of Spectrums on my layout--a WP 2-8-0 and an SP 'kitbashed' M-2 Mountain, and I really like them. I think if it's a belt problem, it should be an easy fix.
Best, and take care of yourself.
Wow, didn't realize I was top of page, so order up!! Chloe has my cc number.
Chamomile Tea, please & thanks.
Rain just now let up. Have no idea if it was enough to put a trickle in the creek or not. At the very least, it should have expanded the puddles. Looks like more rain in store for tomorrow thru tomorrow night. Look forward to walking the property in the daylight. "Thank You Mother Nature"

Actually Strollers are the hot selling item at our Pets Marts Here in Houston
i see people pushing thier older dogs around all the time at the doggie park
Well not much MRing this weekend Dorothy and I had stomach flu or something I had it Saturday and it was her turn on Sunday. I also had to audit the Light List (20 hours of work) but I did manage to assemble 2 Accurail kits and swap couplers out on 17 box cars for the layout. I did a little shopping on the bay and picked up 200 replacement wheels for rolling stock and 6,000 scale RR ties for landscaping purposes around the yard and the round house.
I hope to get into some weathering projects this week on the cabooses I labeled last weekend to hide some of the imperfections of the legends. May weather some of the buildings too.
Prayers and good thoughts to those on the sick and injured list.
A strongin a SANTA FE Mug, please & thanks.
Construction started at 7:30am. Then wife's alarm clock went off at 8:00am, then 10:00 and is now reset for 12:00. Why do some people do that?
Hi Gang: I just got back from the VA. I had to go in for lab work. My appointment with the doctor is Wed at 8am so I get to fight the morning rush again. Everyone here has gone to work or school except for the littlest one. She starts pre school next week. That will only be three days a week.
I need to get going. The cattle need to be turned in to the pasture and I need to get back to work on the fence and gate at the haylot.
I'll see you all tonight.
Rob, That is an excellent question! Saturday (my only day to sleep in) my G/F's alarm went off at 0515, then 0530, then 0545, then 0600, and then she got out of bed. When she walked out the door she asked why I didn't stay in bed and sleep in?
Hey guys.
For those of you who know me, you know that I'm the swimmer around here. well I just maybe the Olmpic swimmer around here come summer 2012. I'm going to train myself when HS swimteam and the local Y swimteam are not going on. This is my hope in the next 4 years all of you might see me at the London Olympics.
all for now.
Howdy ..
Colby ... it's good to hear of your swimming and best wishes with that.
Jerry .... Does that mean the work bench is not normally clean, neat, and tidy?
Tom .... It was a belt that slipped off a wheel in the 4-8-2. I question bachmann's wisdom with their using belt drives. A model locomotive should be able to stop abruptly upon hitting a dead spot, without disconnecting the motor from the drive. Anyhow, the locomotive is off the rip track, and it is back in service. Interesting group of GN locos you have there, Tom.
Rob ... do you know when you can move into the new house?
Jeff .... I like those athearn SD9's. I'm sure you will like yours.
Is Duke still sleeping in the corner booth?
I'll be running some NP trains again soon when I put away the GN stuff. Reminds me; where's Sue?
Happy Model Railroading .

Good afternoon, now that we have had a nice spell of dry weather, projects are in full swing to get completed before Fall arrives. The front of the house is nearly all painted, the driveway has been patched where needed in prep. for sealing tomorrow seeing we have no showers or rain until the weekend. The veggie garden is coming in fast and furious, so we will be canning today and tomorrow sometime inbetween all the other actions taking place.
