Good Morning All,

Pretty mild weather out there this am. A very bright overcast and most of the snow is gone so it should be a productive day.

Bob - good to see you back in the diner. If i wasn't at Sebring those days, I'd have liked to trek up to your open house but duty calls... I am blown away by the industrial switching area your club members put together. Lots of good ideas there and the track work is fantastic. How big is the entire room again? It's nice to have space.

PC - good to hear the missus is resting well. Our prayers for her speedy recovery.

Couldn't get online here from the home computer this weekend and I didn't feel like coming into the shop to log on as I've spent quite enough time at w..k these last few weeks. Did get some time in on the layout and started building another kitbash out of left over parts. we'll see how it works out and post some pics when we get a little further with it. I did find an old box of HO cars i'd forgotten about including a Porsche 911, two XKE-types, and a 63 Vette and some lumpy English sedans (sorry - no Humber Super Snipe though). Just what i need for a really spiffy import garage/sports car emporium.

My best to everyone and welcome back to T White. There are no articulateds on the new Haven, so please feel free to make up for our deficiencies and add all you want. You need all the power you can get for those mountains. And for that matter which road would have been more deserving to expand into the Sierras than yours?      CUL,  J.R.

Morning all!

Wifes doing better, thank you very much.  I'm sure that all the prayers and such have helped abundantly.

Hey Rob (Cederstrand), there was this package on my desk when I got into work this morning.......you wouldn't know anything about that, would you?  I opened it up and all I can say is, SIMPLY STUNNING!  Thank you so very much!  You really didn't have to!  Since my RR is based in Maine, those will go with the decor quite nicely.  They'll have a prominant place in the train room!  (EDIT: I just saw your Email.....will pass them out accordingly!)

Well, I've got a zillion things to do today!  The product of being off for a couple of days, right?

Later!

Good Morning, Zoe - I'll have some of those strawberry pancakes like Jeff's, a glass of Ed's OJ, and a cup of coffee in a D&RGW mug, please. Thanks!

Mitch, does she realize that the base station on the phone won't work without power? A corded one would still be good for her to have in case of a power failure. (Learned that one myself a winter storm, or two, ago)

Bob K. - I may have asked this already (and just forgot...) but is John Pryke in your club? That one shot of the downtown area reminds me of the cover of his Kalmbach book on City Scenery. I bet you guys have fun in your operating sessions. Thumbs Up [tup]

Good to hear about everyone else getting some MRR time in over the weekend. Closest that I got was last night I did a little more on the 10 X 10 layout ideas, and was able to figure a way to have turntable and a 4-5 track yard (need a switching lead, though), switchback to the mine, and a little run space between the (existing) small town/industrial district and the other town with the yard. (Technically, I'll consider the top of my switchback to the mine another town, since I'll put a small depot there) I'll post a pic of the design later/tonight.

Today the temp is 54 F with rain (had some real downpours earlier in the morning and a few thunderboomers), and supposed to drop rain for much of the day. I believe they're calling for a flash flood watch for most of our area today, so Garry, better watch things there! Then later tonight/tomorrow it's supposed to change over to freezing rain and then 2-3" of the white stuff. Hopefully it'll switch over without much ice. We've had more than enough of that, and they don't have all the branches cleared away in our area yet. Heads up, my eastern neighbors (especially Inch and Jerry and our Ohio/Indiana brethren)!

Well, that paper stuff is lurking on my desk and I want to get some of that done before the first morning appointment. Good to hear of the improvements in several of the Diners and their CFO's - keep it up! Yeah!! [yeah] Prayers continue. Angel [angel] Angel [angel]Angel [angel]

Jim - I got it now. I know all about those HD lists from when I was married. As a matter of fact, yesterday, was also a HD list day... My HD list for her to do... shop for my nephew's b'day gift, go to 3 Open Houses, go to the mall, get a new picture frame, go to the grocery store. So, as you can see, I can create the HD lists too! Big Smile [:D]

As for the layouts in the now discontinued Kalmbach book, here's the list.....

Modular Projects -

F&S Junction - Contemporary railroading in a 2 x 4-foot space. By: Michael Tylick

Port of Los Angeles - A 2-weekend modular project. By: Robert Smaus

Layout Projects -

The Seaboard Central - A 4 x 8-foot railroad that grows. By: Jim Kelly

Building the Berkshire - A 4 x 8-foot railroad featuring 2 seasons. By: Lou Sassi

Building the Carbondale Central - A compact, sectional layout for more than just beginners. By: Malcolm Furlow

The Washita & Santa Fe - A 13 x 24-foot layout of AT&SF lines in Oklahoma. By: Andy Sperandeo

So, those are the 6 layout projects in this book. The best thing about this is that all six start with the benchwork, then move onto wiring, scenery, structures, and details. They provide all the diagrams for the benchwork, the modifications if any, for structures, etc. Now, I just wish I was started on mine so I could incorporate some of the ideas I'm getting from this already.

Oh well. Time for me to get my butt into gear and get ready for work. Everyone have a nice day!

Take care!

Howdy folks!

Sign - Welcome [#welcome] First off, a warm welcome to all the new folks and faces making a showing in the Diner lately!

We took Ben to see the Harlem Globetrotters yesterday and it was fun, I remember my dad taking me to see them about 35 years ago.

Wonder if Ryan's got some more additions for that menu.

Bob K I like your B&O idea for the next round, and yes, you hit the nail on the head with the slimming down...all of the above! Dentist is a "she" and the damage was $425.oo for my portion of the bill, insurance covered the other half, and it was by the job. Good thing I only had one tooth with issues. I like the picture too, is that Swift meat packer plant from a Suydam kit? I have one of those cardstock and wood kits from the 1970's that still needs completion. A new menu coming today...soon...

Jim here is the tracker site that you can set up a quick account and it's free. It's called Ticker Factory, you pick the design of the ticker and set up an account then it gives you the code to copy into bulletin boards/forums and a URL address too. http://www.tickerfactory.com/ezticker/ticker_designer.php?type=3

I found out about it from the Prevention.com website, which BTW if you set up a member login there (FREE) you can set up a Health Tracker that allows you to log your daily food and exercise/activity and other indicators every day.

Afternoon folks-just stopping in for a few before leaving for w**k.

Beautiful day out-60 degrees (although that will change soon-yuck!) Oh well, that's March. Murphy's Law of Spring: The nice days will always be w**k days. Dead [xx(]

Cape Jim-Mom does have a traditional wall phone, so no worries there. The cordless is for convienience sake. Radio is for news when the power does go out, as she didn't have a working one during the last outage in November.

(Looks at clock) I better git-have a good day everyone!

in a stormy SOUTHERN mug and that yummy Broiled Salmon with Lemon Garlic Dill Sauce, Thanks!

***PC, glad you like them. Enjoy!

So far, the cheapest price I have found on a MRC Tech 4 280 Dual Power is $64.98, which includes delivery. Is that about the best price I'm likely to find on one of these transformers? It has to be from a place that accepts paypal (my secret train funds Whistling [:-^]shhhh) or personal check.

One of the Docs my wife works with who breeds champion PAINT horses is coming to look at two of ours later this week. He is someone I would not mind selling horses to, as he takes excellent care of them. And when his horses grow old, he donates them to a University that teaches equine care and has a great program for elder horses.

Well, off to do critter rounds. Expecting thunderstorms tonight into tomorrow. "YeeHaw"

Have a great day all. Cowboy [C):-)] Rob

Howdy,

Well finally we are getting weather like ED.  It's 57F and blue skies, light wind off the lake.

But NWS says: ...WINTER STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM LATE TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING... A WINTER STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM LATE TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING. RAIN WILL DEVELOP THIS AFTERNOON... THEN CHANGE TO FREEZING RAIN AFTER MIDNIGHT. A LITTLE SNOW AND SLEET IS ALSO POSSIBLE TOWARD DAYBREAK. THERE MAY BE A BREAK IN THE WINTRY PRECIPITATION TUESDAY MORNING BUT OCCASIONAL FREEZING RAIN IS POSSIBLE INTO TUESDAY NIGHT.  A SIGNIFICANT GLAZE OF ICE IS POSSIBLE IF TEMPERATURES STAY BELOW FREEZING FROM LATE TONIGHT INTO TUESDAY NIGHT. THE EXACT TRACK OF THE STORM SYSTEM IS STILL UNCERTAIN AND WILL DETERMINE THE TEMPERATURES AND AMOUNT OF PRECIPITATION.

Rob, that looks like a great price for that Tech 4.  I would check Internet trains and see what they list it for. I called my LHS and they want $59.98 before shipping.  They are on sale in the March Walther's catalog, and my LHS honors those prices.

Ryan, I used MS Publisher to make my web site and I can't get any of those cut and paste counters to work.  Do you have any suggestions? My WWW has had 1299 hits in the last 60 days.  The only way I know that is by checking an album linked to the account.

John, I spent the last 2 years collecting ideas from the internet into a folder on my computer and now that I'm in the construction phase I keep flipping through those ideas.

Mitch, the next worthwhile show up here will be in the fall in Berea (Cuyahoga County fairgrounds) I think October.  There is a huge train convention coming to Toledo, OH in September.  If you're interested I can send you a www.  They started taking reservations last fall.

Well I actually ran a locomotive on the corner sections of the layout last night, so far so good.

***Colby, sorry to hear about your "whatever it was called". Hope you took Jeffrey's advice and cancelled it, or whatever you do to protect yourself. Bummer!

While in town a bit ago (forgot to pick up a package at the PO...Coffee from the bayBanged Head [banghead]), I DID pick up a couple items for the train table. Sheet of plywood and a 2" thick sheet of insulation foam. OUCH, building materials have sky-rocketed since I last bought any. I really like carving foam so this will make for a good base to start with. Will use old scrap foam to build up the mountains, and whatever other material I have laying around the dungeon.

Question: Is it better to sell a vintage articulated that is not running but still stock, or "grind out some chassis" to fit a new motor in it first? I'm really leaning towards selling the 3 I have just to replace them all with 1 of the new beauties available now.

Division One of the North Central Region of NMRA is pleased to announce that we will be hosting the 2008 Regional Convention right here in Toledo, Ohio.

We are planning clinics, layout tours, and operating sessions on many of the layouts in the Toledo area.  They range from Z gauge to G gauge.  We are also planning some "real railroad" tours as well.

As usual, non-rail activities are also being included in our planning activities. Some of you will be pleased to know there are a couple of new malls in the area worth seeing.  Sorry, no new Hobby shops.

We have reserved a block of rooms at the Clarion Hotel located at the Secor Rd. exit of I-475.  This exit is accessible from I-75 to the east and US-23 from the west.

ROB: Got them on the counter, Ready to pack.Check out the packing material, it's the Spooner Advocate, a REALLY small town paper here. 2nd page has a Years Ago column and usually talks about train stuff up here! They both are Tech II 2400. The button says "pulse", I think that's the same as momentum. They sure worked for me!Big Smile [:D]

Also have 2 Man-Made walk-around throttles if anyone's interested. No memory, but I had them wired to the Tech 2400's using regular phone wall jacks. It worked great for cab control.Same  deal that I gave Rob.Big Smile [:D]

Robyn(CFO) is hitting the PO Tues. or Weds. I'll let ya Know, Rob.

Enjoy, and glad they are going to a good home!

Good evening, still a foot of snow on the ground here, but with the rain and warmer temps due here this week, the snowpack will be diminished greatly by the weekend.

Master bathroom (HDJ) project is progressing well now that the cabinets have been stripped down and restained and poly'd, the floor is stripped and ready for the new tiles, the ceiling and walls have been repainted, and the 40 year old vent and light has been replaced in the ceiling. ( Why can't I work on my layout ? )

FERGIE: I wish I knew that in advance that you were going to make the trip to Intervale, the Museum is closed on Tuesdays. You missed me by a week, we were up at Attitash ( about 5 miles from Intervale on route 302 ). Yes, North Conway has a lot of "girlie" shops, but from May til end of October, the trains run and there is a lot to see at the station, plus the Crawford Notch run through the mountains. Plan a trip in the Summer with the family, go up the Cog RR and then take the Notch train also.

Bowling tonight, got to run, see you guys later,

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! Hello everybody ..

I took a few days off so we could make a trip to Cincinnati, and I see everyone here appears to be very active. Also, it looks like everyone is continues to be well fed. We saw the grandkids in Cincy and also I saw a nice model railroad layout in a guy's basement.

I received the following in an email. Perhaps some of you have seen it. Others may see the humor as much as I did:

After every run from Wichita Falls, Amarillo or Lubbock, Ft. Worth & Denver engineers would fill out a form, called a "gripe sheet", which told shop personnel at Childress, Texas about problems with the locomotive.  Shop workers and/or diesel maintainers would then correct the problems, document any repairs on the form, and then post it, allowing engineers to review the gripe sheets before the locomotive's next run.

Never let it be said that FW&D shop forces at Childress lacked a sense of humor. Here are some actual maintenance complaints submitted by FW&D engineers during the 1950's and early 1960's and the solutions recorded by the Childress shops.

(P= The problem logged by the engineer.)
(S= The solution and action taken by the Childress Shops.)

P:  (FW&D #554) Tire on third driver, fireman's side, has serious flat spot and almost needs replacement.
S:  Almost replaced  tire on third driver.

P:  (FW&D #409) Last night's run from Lubbock OK, except worn out seat springs caused ride to be very rough.
S:  Seat springs not installed on this locomotive.

P:  (FW&D #605) Something loose in cab.
S:  Something tightened in cab.

P:  (FW&D #9981A) Dead bugs all over windshield.
S:  Live bugs on back-order.

P:  (FW&D #9980A) When running in excess of 79 mph, locomotive experiences severe vibrations.
S:  Cannot reproduce problem inside roundhouse.

P:  (C&S #9952A) Evidence of leak in steam generator.
S:  Evidence removed.

P:  (FW&D #857) This unit's radio volume is unbelievably loud.
S:  Radio volume set to more believable level.

P:  (FW&D 458) Grip lock causes Johnson bar to stick.
S:  That's what they're for.

P:  (C&S 701D) Sander inoperative.
S:  Sander always inoperative in OFF mode.

P:  (FW&D #9980A) Suspected crack in windshield.
S:  Suspect you're right.

P:  (C&S #9950A) While climbing Wheatland Hill locomotive began to shut down. A running inspection was performed by fireman who reports that the Number 2 engine was missing.
S:  Number 2 engine found after brief search.

P:  (FW&D #750A) Locomotive handles funny.
S:  Locomotive warned to straighten up, run right, and be serious.

P:  (C&S 703A) Cab radio hums.
S:  Reprogrammed cab radio with lyrics.

P:  (FW&D #9980A) Mouse in engine compartment.
S:  Cat installed.

P:  (FW&D #859) Noise coming from under control stand.  Sounds like a midget pounding on something with a hammer.
S:  Took hammer away from midget.

P:  (C&S #9952A) Throttle sticks whenever locomotive operates over 79 MPH for an extended period of time.
S:  Then don't go so *** fast.

P:  (FW&D #701D) Mars light inoperative.
S:  Have asked John Glenn to pick one up on next trip to space.

yeah, I'd say they fell a little West... But still neat.

Evening All, How bout a Cordon Bleu?

Question for those with Becnchwork experiance

I've pretty well gotten HO&N down to a bi level, but I need suggestions in how to benh the upper level, especially over the new Yard and Incline repping Madison IN. I;ve got it about a foot off the wall, so I can get behind it. Both lelvls are 3 ft in width (upper is actually 2, but I;d liek to add soem surrounding city) and 25 ft long. And The whole idea to get them off the wall is to get behind them, so the less hanging down on one side is the best.
