Hi, guys--

Thought I'd drop in for a little visit (re-visit?) been kind of out of the game the past year or so, trying to decide whether I've lost it completely by retiring from one school and turning around and going back to work for another.  Yah, musician's retire--RIGHT!

Cleaning up the Yuba River Sub from an emergency roof repair to the California Basement (garage, for all of you lucky others) in October, and getting over a MAJOR siege of COPD (the doctor said it was because I used to smoke, I told the Doctor that it's because of all the #$&% SUV's out here in SunnyCal).  Anyway, I'm back working on the Yuba River Sub and getting active instead of just lurking.  Right now my project is resuscitating a basket-case Akane Yellowstone that I picked up a couple of weeks ago at a Roseville swap-meet.  Needs a lot of TLC, but the seller and I came to an agreement about it before I laid out the cash (he was a very honest, VERY nice guy).  Anyway, it's in parts on the kitchen table, being supervised by Spooky, the famous Maine Coon cat cabeese thief, and it's the catalyst that's gotten me actively back into the hobby, lately.  After I finish getting this sweetheart running, it's onto a Christmas present I bought for myself from Caboose Hobbies--another PFM Rio Grande L-131 2-8-8-2.

Do I have a problem with articulateds, gang?  Is there a rehab center for 'Mallet' freaks?  This will be my THIRD Yellowstone, my SECOND L-131, I've already got TWO L-105 4-6-6-4's, I won't even talk about the Cab-forwards or the USRA 2-8-8-2's.  I'm running DC for cryin' out loud and the railroad is medium-sized.  Of course, I could always triple-head, LOL!

Hey, what the heck, it's fun.  It's even more fun getting back into it.

Anyway, I'll have what I-5's having.  Or if Chloe and Zoe are out of that, how about a nice helping of good old Goulash?  And NOT on a Taco shell, even if I AM from California, LOL!

Evening Gang: Well we didn't go to the Six Flags opening. I was up real late with some acid reflux. It wasn't a real bad one but did burn some. I sat up and watched Mc Hale's Navy on DVD. Right now we're watching Second Hand Lions. If you haven't seen this movie get the DVD it is well worth it. I did wake up at 6;30 but figured that Mary Ann could use a couple more minutes of sleep. When I woke up again it was 8;30 and no way to get there on time.

I went over to the track and spent the afternoon watching everyone try and figure out what to do. What a waste of time. Tomorrow I'm staying here and working on my own stuff.

I had to trouble shoot the light in the master bedroom. It wasn't coming on. I guess that when I replaced the relay for the master bath I got a bad connection on the relay for the bedroom. I'm glade that I had my fox and hound to track the wiring.

Welcome to New HeavenSign - Welcome [#welcome]. Since I'm trying to loose weight I'll let you get off easy, just a diet coke and a salad for me.

Welcome back to TWhite. I'd really love to have a DM&IR Yellowstone and here you have three.  Well I'll keep looking and hope that I get lucky. I've got an old Akane USRA 2-6-6-2 that only has drive on the rear engine. Someday I may get it out and see how it does on just the rear engine. It may do allright who knows?  With the weight it has it may pull as well as some of the new stuff.

I think that I'll hit the sack. I'm still dragging from last night.

Good Night All

Paul--

Just between you and me.  This is a secret, do not tell a SOUL, okay?  Get out that Akane single-powered 2-6-6-2, clean the motor with alcohol and contact spray, put it on the tracks, line up every car you have behind it, turn up the power, and if it even BEGINS to spin before taking that train out, my name is Schicklelgreuber.  I've got one, it just WHALLOPS trains out of my yard at a nice, sweet crawl.  I understand that NWSL puts out gear towers and universals and can motors that can get the little baby double-powered and crawling like a baby, but the original ain't anything to giggle over, believe me.  That's why I kind of brighten up everytime I see an old, used brass Akane, I kind of feel in my bones that the mechanism is indestructable, the details can be added, and those babies are going to haul anything I want to put behind them.  Wow!

Jeff, nice video on the lights on - lights off wiring job you did.  Do you have an overview picture of your layout with all the building lights on and the room lights off?  I bet that would look very cool.  Now a 2 function DCC is that forward and reverse?

I was looking at a sale on DCC decoders and they had 6 functions DCC w/sound for $50.  What are the 6 functions?

Welcome back to TWhite. No I don't think you need to go to MAA (Mallet Anonymous Association) I have a 4-6-6-4 and a 2-8-8-0 on my layout and I love them.  I must have more, LOL.  Are you an Iron Range fan, coal belt, or a west of Chicago rail fan?

Poem to MOM
My son came home from school today, with a smirk upon his face.
He decided he was smart enough, to put me in my place.
'

Guess what I learned in Civics Two, that's taught by Mr.. Wright? It's all about the laws today, the 'Children's Bill of Rights.'

It says I need not clean my room, Don't have to cut my hair No one can tell me what to think,
Or speak, or what to wear.

I don't have to bow my head, and I sure don't have to pray.
I can wear earrings if I want, and pierce my tongue &nose.

I can read & watch just what I like, Get tattoos from head to toe.
And if you ever spank me, I'll charge you with a crime.
I'll back up all my charges, with the marks on my behind.

Don't you ever touch me, my body's only for my use,
Not for your hugs and kisses, that's just more child abuse.

Don't preach about your morals, like your Mama did to you.
That's nothing more than mind control, and it's illegal too!

Mom, I have these children's rights, So you can't influence me,
Or I'll call Children's Services Board, Better known as C.S.B.'

Mom's Reply and Thoughts

Of course my first instinct was To toss him out the door.
But the chance to teach him a lesson Made me think a little more.

I mulled it over carefully, I couldn't let this go.
A smile crept upon my face, he's messing with a pro.

Next day I took him shopping At the local Goodwill Store..
I told him, 'Pick out all you want, there's shirts & pants galore.

I've called and checked with C.S.B . Who said they didn't care
If I bought you K-Mart shoes Instead of Nike Airs.

I've canceled that appointment to take your driver's test.
The C.S.B. Is unconcerned So I'll decide what's best.'

I said 'No time to stop and eat, Or pick up stuff to munch.
And tomorrow you can start to learn To make your own sack lunch.

Just save the raging appetite, And wait till dinner time.
We're having liver and onions, A favorite dish of mine.'

He asked 'Can I please rent a movie, To watch on my VCR?'
'Sorry, but I sold your TV, For new tires on my car.

I also rented out your room; You'll take the couch instead.
The C.S.B. requires just a roof over your head.

Your clothing won't be trendy now,
I'll choose what we eat.

That allowance that you used to get,
Will buy me something neat.

I'm selling off your jet ski, Dirt bike & roller blades.
Check out the 'Parents Bill of Rights', it's in effect today!

Hey hot shot, are you crying, Why are you on your knees?
Are you asking God to help you out, Instead of C.S.B..?'

You mean like this one?

Now a 2 function DCC is that forward and reverse?
A 2 function decoder controls speed, direction and lights.

Twhite: I wish I had a big layout to test out my challenger and (soon) big boy.

One pulls 140 cars straight and level. The other does 180.

Add 'em together and spacemouse will have to re-make the "You know your train is too long when..." thread.

Lee

Lee--thanks for the welcome back.  Actually, I'm a big Rio Grande steam fan.  The reason I have all these Yellowstones (actually, my very favorite steam loco of all time) is because actually during WWII, Rio Grande rented them out from the Missabe during the winters and used them on the Moffat Tunnel route.  What I've done is just have my HO Rio Grande acquire them and put them into a never-was 3900 series of locomotives.  Which might explain why they're all trundling around my railroad hauling reefer blocks instead of ore and lettered for "Scenic Line of the World", LOL!  And of course, to top the whole thing off, MY Rio Grande seems to have somehow moved west to the California Sierra's.  I suppose it might be carrying the word "Protolance" to the nth-degree, but what the hey, I'm having fun.

Speaking of, I did some more test-running on the 'basket-case' last night, and I think I'll keep the original motor for a while.  Runs quite nicely.  Gonna install the Tomar track pickup shoes today (I do that on all my brass, just for safety's sake) and work a little more on the boiler details (this baby is a REALLY early run!).

Back to school tomorrow--our choir has two competitions coming up and they're nervous/excited.  Kids crack me up--they get out on the Soccer field or the basketball court and slam the competition into the woodwork, they get up in front of an audience to sing and it's "Deer in the Headlights" time.  But they're game for it, and they're learning like crazy.  Ya just gotta love 'em.

Jeff--LOVE that night scene!Thumbs Up [tup]

***Jeffrey, I really like the varied spacing between buildings in that night shot. Very realistic!

With all the recent talk about articulated locos, I am considering selling off my Big Boy, Challenger and Mallet. Why? Well, they are all vintage Rivarossi and I just saw the amount of detail on the newer Athearn models and there is no comparison. The detail on the Athearns is supurb. Plus, building a smaller layout, do I really need more than 1 articulated anyway? What do you guys think...Yae or Nay?

LEE: That's what I run and I love it! I'd definitly buy another. The price sounds good, does it come with a power supply? I'd also suggest getting a few extra universal panels, depending on the size of your layout. For the power bus I use the 6 wire phone cable they suggest and make my own lenghts. I had to buy the connectors and a crimper. You can also buy them in 25 and 50 foot lengths, maybe shorter.

Terry, Well I'll have to wait until June, I just put all new rotors and breaks on my truck and Friday I had to install a new starter.

I doubt the power supply is included. The power supply is listed for 20 amp; $139. Page 39 March MRR.

Dorothy just tried to stop in the diner and found it closed; I'll have to send her the new address.  I told her 7 days without stopping by the diner makes one weak!

I use the Digitrax Super Chief and I couldn't be happier with the digitrax product.  I also found that it's cheaper in the long run if you go radio equipped up front rather then retro fitting it.
