V8Vega
For those in southern Calif especially  Ray as he is close The Train Shop in San Dimas is closing and has 50% off sale. Open 10 to 5 Wed. to Sat

V8 Dennis,  I went to the Train Stop in  San Dimas today and picked up a few items at half price.  The 50% off sale on everything in the store is still going on.  They said it had been going on for two months but this is the first I heard about it.  A lot of good things have been sold already.  Most K Line passenger cars have been sold except for some Bombardier commuter cars but not Metrolink.  The Ringling Brothers Circus Advertising car that I wanted had already been sold but I picked up a K line circus observation car with open platform on the back and an awning overhead.  Car is lighted with interiors.  Original price was about $150 but I got it for $75.  Could have had the same car with a different name for $50 but I wanted the one with the name Sarasota which was the home of Ringling Brothers Winter Quarters.  The one I wanted was from a later run after a price increase but the two cars are identical.Angry  I also picked up two circus flat cars by K Line with circus wagons also at half price and a couple of lighted lock ons by Lionel.

Good evening all,

Work was busy but frustrating today.  Spent most of the evening weeding out unneeded financial papers.  Amazing how that accumulates in a hurry.  Watched Arrow.  Very good episode.

88 - Okay, that took a moment to set in...how bad is the damage?

Afternoon Fellas

TheQ traded her 2006 525i in on Friday on a 2011 528i - MUCH bigger car, and gets better MPG. Very nice drive and ride.

On Sunday, on our way to get medicine for The Princess, I tagged a yearling. I had just turned on to the road and was accelerating, initial estimate is $1,942.00 in damage ($937.00) for a new passenger headlight assembly. When I dropped it off at the repair show they found a few things missed by the adjuster, and I am having a few road chips fixed on the front facia for $160. So all-in-all not too bad. No sheet metal needs to be replaced and nothing more than minor 'dings'. Hope to get it back late this week - mid next week.

Brent,

Ouch.  Make sure that the shop uses new OEM parts.  Most insurance companies have their "authorized" shops use LKQ salvage parts unless you have an OEM rider on the policy.

If you don't have the rider, they should let you pay the difference between the OEM and salvage prices.  The markup on the LKQ parts is usually so ridiculous that the OEM is only a few dollars more.

I don't know about you, but salvage parts on a newer vehicle are unacceptable to me.

Good news for D.Baker getting the cast off!  Finally!

Other news here is announcement by the Rail Giants Railroad Museum at the L.A. County Fairground in Pomona that there will be a press conference at 10:00AM tomorrow and the Big Boy 4014 will start its journey across the parking lot to the North End of the fairground where it will stay for a while until U.P. and Metrolink work out a schedule to move it to West Colton which is the first step on it's way back to Cheyenne. They are going to leap frog the engine across the parking lot on track panels..  Sort of like snap track.  I will try to get out there tomorrow.

Sounds like Fall has arrived in the East with all those lower temps.

Chief, glad you had a good hunt.  Stay safe on the ladders.  My doctor won't let me get near one.  I fell off of one next door a couple of years ago picking avacados.  Landed on my feet but did not break anything thankfully.

Just got good news from Bob Keller that the new WBB GP30 is only about 3 1/2 inches  in height.  I was worried about it going through a bascule bridge but this should clear fine.  I think I will get the ACL version if I can find one at a good price.

V8 Dennis, thanks for the tip on the sale at the Train Stop in San Dimas.  I'll try to check it out.

Ray

Good afternoon from the National Toy Trains Museum,  Can't seem to find the time to check in from at home. Smile  It was a little cold this morning, right around freezing, it's 39 now and heading for 27 tonight.  Then to get a little warm spell over the weekend with highs in the 60s and lows in the high 40s. On the bright side it has been sunny all day long.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Brent, Sorry to hear about the deer strike, my granddaughter had one of those last fall, actually it hit her car.  She was unhurt but the car got a pretty good job done on it.

Well back to work, still cataloging photographs, working on a collection of McCoy standard gauge photographs given to us by Margaret McCoy.

B - that's a pretty good turn around.  Those headlight assemblies are expensive especially if it's HID...

Price is not bad either.  Glad you and the family are ok  528?  Nice...should handle sweet too, even though it's a bit larger.

Frank -- I wish you the best during deer season, I also wish for you safety.  We had our first fatality last week when an experienced deer hunter fell from his tree stand, very sad.  One of my wife's HS friends (also experienced) fell from his tree stand years ago and I've never forgotten him.  I used to be an avid hunter but now my hunting is with a very long Nikon lens attached to my camera Thumbs Up

Be safe and good hunting!

Thanks Jon.  I don't use climbers.  My stands are double ladder stands [gives room for backpack and etc.] so I'm climbing a ladder.  Also have welded conduit box stands that you climb ladder.  A little safer.

A quick cold [Yankee cold] good morning.  Drove back in the snohio and cold wind.  Shirt sleeve weather at noon yesterday.  Then it got windy.  By 4 PM [in stand] had on my layered camo coats and my gloves.  Windy dropped temps 20 degrees in no time.

Hunting: saw lots of does.  Yard dogs ran through first morning. Bang Head Does and nice 4 pointer yesterday morning.  Does yesterday afternoon until I go out of stand early.  Buddy shot big buck crossing field and got blood.  We tried to rack the deer and it got dark.  Wind howling and snow started blowing.  Finally gave up.  Big fields, deep ditches and etc.  He is going back this AM to look.  Cold so deer will be OK.

Brent, BMW's are not good deer hunting weapons. Whistling Sorry.

Have a good one.

PS: glad Shake and Bake got rid of his cast.  Still in boot but better to maneuver now.

Konnichiwa and Ohayo Chuck,

Yes, fall is fully here as the weather has finally decided to remain on the cool side.  I had a brief 3-mile run and weightraining workout this morning.  Then I spent two hours with the older son's 5th grade class helping them assemble and launch bottle rockets.  The rockets were made from plastic soda bottle containers and the propellant was water and air.  My son's team won as their rocket flew the farthest - over 80 meters.  I may have had as much fun as the kids.  We have flag football practice tonight and I have no idea what is on the dinner menu.

Doug M. - I like those cars and actually have the Air Force ones on my Christmas list.

I hope you all have a great day.

Joe

Good evening all,

Busy day at work.  Sat in the chair tonight and fell asleep.  More tired than I thought.  Fifedog, you had a question?  My daily descriptions have been much briefer lately due to a lot going on.  Did make arrangements today so we could have a good visit with Lucas on Thanksgiving.  That will be nice.

Sunny and cold here today.  Started out at 23 degrees and never made it out of the 30's.  Clear sky tonight - it is going to get coooold tonight.

Working through the hit list on the Polar Express layout.  One of these items is making a billboard insert for the LHS to put in the layout somewhere in the billboard with the blinking light I won on e-bay last night.

Not much else going on.  All for now.

Don't know about alfalfa fields in Pomona.  The only agriculture still going on that I know of is at Cal Poly college just West of Pomona proper.  The students grow corn and silage for their animals. Might be some alfalfa but I don't know for sure.

Hello all,

A near miss from the Snow Cannon resulted in white grass along with a stiff breeze this AM.

First hard freeze predicted tonight. That should bring down the remaining leaves so I can gather them this weekend. I do need to re-install the heat tape that was removed to repair a leaking drinking cup in the barn and winterize the camper.

Mrs & I went spotting using the car headlights the other evening. Counted at least 15 Whitetails in the now harvested corn field. No Bucks(at least not big enough to see) The weekend was nice. I helped Mrs and we did some cleaning and other stuff around the house.

Chief & Laz.......Good luck on the deer hunt

Still nothing on the train front.

Best get busy

Prayers for those in need

Aloha. Sunny and cooooooold. It was nasty coming home in the snow yesterday. Nice meeting with the pastor at church last night. Then got a chance to run the cobwebs off Ivor after fixing one of his tunnels again (due to a visiting feline)  He seemed happy. Smile

Have you seen the 'Made in the USA' military load cars by Lionel?  They look nifty.

Konbanwa,

I hope everyone had a great holiday.  The weather has definitely turned cooler out here which is great; today's high was only 48.  There is not much to report out here.  The Princess has volleyball practice and somehow I ended up with dinner responsibilities.  I better start on that.

Brent - I hope you didn't tenderize Bambi with the car you're wanting to trade in.  I'm glad you are okay.

Buckeye - That was a great breakdown on the holidays.  Also, please note there is a day called Armed Forces Day which is designated to celebrate those currently serving in the armed forces.  Technically, active duty members are not honored on Veterans Day unless they served in a war.  However, I believe many of us would rightly celebrate and thank our service members any day of the year, as well as our police officers and firefighters.

Sayonara,

Joe

Evenin' boys.  Waiting for our first burst of SNOHIZO in the morning.

Well, trip to New Freedom was well worth it.  Leviathan 63 and York 17 are truly  rolling pieces of artwork.  The short consists were sold out, but we had a good time chasing them, as Rte 616 parallels the line.  Grandson was still chatting up the "big choochoos" with his mommy at bed time.  "Ding ding".

jonadel - If it weren't the grandson's birthday on Sunday....  Looks like a fun troop.

SPMan - Pomona...? Are there still alfalfa fields there...?

Since both of my Grandfathers were Veterans of WWI, a little history for today: Time

Armistice Day (which coincides with Remembrance Day and Veterans Day, public holidays) is commemorated every year on 11 November to mark the armistice signed between the Allies of World War Iand Germany at CompiègneFrance, for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front of World War I, which took effect at eleven o'clock in the morning—the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" of 1918. While this official date to mark the end of the war reflects the ceasefire on the Western Front, hostilities continued in other regions, especially across the former Russian Empireand in parts of the old Ottoman Empire.

Most countries changed the name of the holiday after World War II, to honor veterans of that and subsequent conflicts. Most member states of the Commonwealth of Nations adopted the nameRemembrance Day, while the United States chose All Veterans Day (later shortened to 'Veterans Day') to explicitly honor military veterans, including those participating in other conflicts.

In the U.S., the function of Veterans Day is subtly different from that of other 11 November holidays. Unlike the situation in other countries, where that calendar date is set aside specifically for honoring those who died in action, Veterans Day honors all American veterans, whether living, dead in action, or deceased from other causes. The official national remembrance of war dead is instead Memorial Day, originally called 'Decoration Day', from the practice of decorating the graves of soldiers, which originated in the years immediately following the American Civil War.

A big salute to all of our Veterans today.  Thumbs UpThumbs UpThumbs UpThumbs Up

All Veterans past and present, thank you for your service to our country.  God bless you all.

Went out to eat last night with family and widower friend from church.  He was in a terrible mood but lightened up after dinner.  Hope our get together helped.  I think it did.

No plans today.  Might just run trains and take it easy.  While running a proto 2 engine yesterday, the train just abruptly stopped like someone pulled the plug on the transformer.  Lights were still on in the passenger cars but the DCS equipped engine shut down.  Had trouble restarting but finally got it going again.  Have no idea what caused it unless it was a short or something.  Happened in the same location twice so I suspect a problem in the track at that location or something in that particular engine that does not like that section of track.  All other engines have no problem.Confused

 Have a fun Holiday,

Ray

Aloha. Thank you, vets, and our own Joe DeMay! Grey and supposed to snow later! Spent the entire weekend raking leave and then mulching them as best I could. Still filled 12 bags. It was a good workout and just in time for a week of highs in the low 30s.  Thanks to Buckeye, I am studying the footings of bridges in Wales (using Google Images) before attempting one for Ivor on the layout later this month.  Boy, the Bears sure stunk yesterday - kudos to the Lions.

I had a neat moment coming into work this morning. My commuter train comes into the station on tracks raised by the North Western back in 1913 so it crosses the Santa Fe tracks that curve into Union station. At just the right moment, our train crossed over one from the BNSF commuter line and the Amtrak Hiawatha, with the 'L' crossing above us at the same time. Too bad I wasn't in a place to snap a photo, but it was a model rail moment with four trains crossing over.
