Hello all

Back on my home mountain for a couple days. For several reasons I won't be working on the other mountain. It's what's best for the organization.

Got the 2035 and the K-line revolving beacon yesterday. The 2035 looks to be in fairly decent shape, but will need a good cleaning before I run it. The beacon needs a new cover as it looks like it got a bit hot, but it was way cheap and the seller mentioned that.

Had to climb on top of the building this afternoon to replace the GPS antenna. Always quite the view up there.

Jeffrey - hope you are safe from the storm and I didn't know your layout had two levels

Dennis - good news!

BOC - great news!

Puffdog - sorry, but that's funny!  Hope you are all better!

Mom is doing great - she will have chemo every 3 weeks for 4 to 6 treatments.  Char and the kids are getting ready for their trip.  I have had some illness for a couple days - was better this morning, but then had some more problems.  Doing fine now, so I hope it's all over!  Nice chat with the guys, but I'm ready for the election to be over.  TARDIS is ready, so let's get going!

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

sir james I

It's 75 now.

RI-Jack, thanks for the warning it saved me some time.

We spent a very nice day with my cousin and his wife. We started at one of the area metro snow parks, had a one hour snow mobile ride( senior rate $3.00). and then off for a meal sitting outdoors in our fur coats enjoying the view of the ice on the lake. Had  strawberry shortcake with some banilla tonight, but got plenty for the thingy crew..S.J.

Watched my DVR'd favorite movie, Country Strong.

Sleep tight.

Here's a short video of the 1664 towing around the cars from the #258. You can see the new RDC off to the right.

Konbanwa,

It's about bedtime here.  We had an easy evening here and just relaxed.  I'm looking forward to the four-day weekend; however, it looks like it might rain for most of it.  I suppose we'll have to find some indoor activities to pass the time.

Bob - That's a great looking loco.  Thanks for posting the video.

Jeffrey - hope you are safe from the storm and I didn't know your layout had two levels

That layout was built back in the 90's and was torn down before 2005. It was just a memory by the time Katrina hit. I haven't had a multilevel layout since. The photos of that layout were taken with an AIPTEK VGA pocket camera. It was my very first 'digital' camera. I think it was 1.2 megapixel and I think that might be a bit generous.

Good morning. It's 71° and very wet. Humidity is 100%. The high will be, well the weather guessers can't make up their minds between 81° and 88°.

It's wet here but not bad. Winds gusts are down to 30-35 mph. Rain showers are frequent but not heavy. This morning we've gotten 0.29"of rain at a rate of 0.04"/h. A wind advisory is in effect until 4am Friday.

The forecast here is:
Breezy. Showers in the morning...then rain likely and isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon. Highs in the 80s. West winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts to around 45 mph. Chance of rain 80 percent.

Rainfall totals are predicted to be generally light and total around or under one tenth of an inch over an hour.

So as I said, wet but not bad. We're on the west side of this storm so most of the bad stuff is east of us and heading north.

No plans for today. As you can imagine my attention is centered on the weather.

Morning all.  Back from train station in Raleigh.  Now to do some chores and get ready to go back to Raleigh for luncheon.

Bob, great video.  Fast passenger service!!!!

Buckeye is a great buddy.  Off working to make sure I get my SS. Wink

LAZ, Buckeye should buy me something nice at York.  All those birthday presents I've sent him.

I guess Jon Englehart has gone off the face of the earth. ????

BTW: read the article about the BNSF layout.  Our Roy is the master "wirier".  He can do amazing things.

Have a good one.

It's a sunny 66. going into the 80s today. I'm not sure about this new format, it rewrote part of my last post...Hmmmmm I wonder. It's going to be nice today so I will spend some time outside before Tuesday's snow storm gets here. It seems like I just planted the garden and puff it's over already. . . S.J.

Good Mornin’ Y’all From Crystal Clear Cape Ann Taxachusetts,

I always get a few good laughs catching up on POT posts and a smile looking at the train pics and videos.  And when the news on the medical fronts is moving positive, it makes my day.Thumbs Up

It was down to 54 last night, the third night in a row the overnight temps dipped below 60.  Like LAZ, the daytime temps here have been beautiful, 70s.  So up in these here parts I guess Fall is officially here.  We may hit the low to mid 90s in a day or two, so it is not yet time to retire the A/C for the year.  We also finally got some serious drops in the humidity, so the windows have been open and the fresh air for sleeping most welcome for a change.

BOC......your Doc’s positive news was most encouraging, and I hope you are now able to pack back on some of the pounds you lost.  Prime rib, beer, and banilla ought to get you rolling. Big SmilePrayers continue for more of the same. Angel

Brutus.......thank you for the very positive update on your Mom.  Prayers continue for her progress. Angel Hope you shake that thing that has been “bugging” you.  Bad banilla?  Sounds like you will be playing bachelor for a couple of days. Thumbs Up

Jeff........   Glad to hear the worst of Isaac passed you to the East.  That is some nightlight you've got!!!  Hope your Dad weathered the storm equally unscathed.

You California boys are still seeing temps topping 100 accompanying those quakes?!  Must be a stern message from above. Whistling

Chief.......have you done a cost/benefit analysis on all those free meals?  The gasoline costs getting to these free food events and then home must be cutting into your train budget.  Hope the diet is still on track, slow and sure wins the day.  Lots of salads, fish, and chicken around these parts lately.  Same objectives, different household.

KEV........that must have been a relief, to first have a neighbor bring over the kitty’s collar with no kitty.  Then you discover George on your porch.  My worried wife would have me out performing a search and recue operation.  "Don't come home without my baby!!!!"  Bang Head  BTW, I have been thinking about all you said about the advantages of credit cards.  Let me borrow yours for a week so I can see if I like them better. Whistling

RaySP.......hope you have a good time today at the retired engineers’ breakfast.  Stay on those Honda dealer knuckleheads!!!  Re stuff we save “just in case”..........my basement is filled with that junk.  I, carted out 5X40 gallon bags to the curb for trash pickup a couple of days ago and plan to continue to do so weekly to make space in the basement for a new layout dog training room for the wife.  Maybe a dumpster is in order, sitting in my driveway to incent and accelerate my purge objectives.  The dumpster was LAZ' idea.  So far the trash guys have not complained but I think that may change.

Fife........hope things have started to settle down with that allergic reaction.  On the positive side, at least you were not told you are allergic to beer. BeerThumbs Up  Re the Little Princess and Fifepup helping out in the train room. Thumbs Up  But a black sink?  What is with that?  I thought only Italians liked black sinks. Laugh

RT........prayers the nerves in your wrist settle down and that today's day off finds you feeling a bit better.  Carpal tunnel is no fun.  Re TVs, mine never seem to wear out, and no issues.  I’ve got a 20” Sony (1992, office), a 27” Panasonic HD (2004, LR, replaced a dead circa 1994 27” Sony), and another 20” Sony (2006, bedroom) all soldiering on, all analog.  I don’t think any of these will ever wear out.  Wifey and I bought each other a 46” HD Samsung for Christmas a couple of years ago (2010, family room), and that is the one that is getting the most hours on the clock.  Wife and I spar over the latter because that one is the only one with an HD box, all of the channels, and the hookup to the surround sound system that she surprised me with for my 50th birthday.

Bob..........thanks for the video of the 1664 running on your oak train table.  Bet no one else here has one of those.  Smile, Wink & Grin

Yup..........Roy, Buckeye, and JON are all MIA. Sad

Later, gang.

Jack

Jeff........   Glad to hear the worst of Isaac passed you to the East.  That is some nightlight you've got!!!

That's an emergency light I bought some years ago. It's come in quite handy on several occasions and it's quite bright. It has eight ultra-bright white LED's and one dim golden LED (night light). It can light a room well enough that you won't be banging into stuff.

It was Jack but I did have some fun with this.

When the wife got home I told her the story in the order it happened. Jim comes over with collar and tells me he thinks the cat is dead.  Dead He tells me of the fight and only finding the collar afterwards. Wife's eyes are getting red now. Crying  I told her I said to Jim well I thought I saw the cat today and we walked to the deck where George was sleeping. Laugh

Somehow she did not see the humor in the story. Oops - Sign Black Eye

The last cat that went missing three years ago I found 2 days later in the woods gored to death by a Buck. That may of been why. Oops

HOSTAGE CRISIS:  UPDATE DAY EIGHT ON THE NEVER ENDING AUTOMOTIVE WAR

My SRX has been held hostage by the dealership since early last Thursday for what was supposed to be a same day turnaround for a couple of simple warranty repairs.  The appointment was made two weeks in advance to get me in the cue.  You know the drill.  I was assured the car would be turned around the same day, the repairs were simple.  It was not.

Day after day I was given one reason after another why my car was not ready.  First it was parts that they had assured me would be there the day of my appointment and were not.  Then there was the missing part from the parts order.  This was followed by a need to paint one of the parts.  Then I was told they needed to let the paint dry and set on the part before reassembly (what I thought the dealership's body shop ovens are for).

So yesterday I get a return call (yes, I had to initiate most of the communication) from the service advisor.  He said my car would be reassembled and ready for pickup at 4:30PM, meaning that my 44 mile back and forth commute to retrieve my vehicle would, of course, be in the midst of the usual "parking lot" traffic on the expressway (ironic misnomer).  They wear you down if you let them.  "I am NOT driving 44 miles to your place and back home in the freakin' traffic.  Tomorrow !!!"  The service advisor apologizes and asks if he can call me right back, says he has an idea..

To my surprise, within minutes (shock) the service advisor calls me to explain that another service employee lives in my home town and would be willing to drop off my car at my house and pick up the courtesy car.  He needed my permission for the other employee to drive my car.  "Do it!" was my response.  It was going to save me from sitting in traffic for a couple of hours.

The service guy shows up at my house, and with my next surprise.  The car was washed/dried, the dead bugs on the front end from my Canada trip were (mostly) gone.  The tires were ArmorAll'ed.  The entire interior including the back dog area was thoroughly vacuumed (yes, they took out Maximus' dog crate and put it back in), and the dash area, and door panels cleaned and ArmorAll'ed.

Then came my next surprise.  I knew I owed the dealer $196 for non-warranty service I had requested.  "Where is my bill?"  The delivery guy said the service manager was going to eat the cost because of the delays I endured!!!!

Something is seriously wrong here. In today's day and age this type of "sorry for your inconvenience" stuff is not normal.  The only thing I can figure is that, unbeknownst to me, the wifey called them and told them she was coming down for a heart-to-heart  "chat." Smile, Wink & Grin

All's well that ends well.

Jack

Hello all

Just a quick cup of coffee before I go find breakfast and then climb up to the roof.

Jack - glad to hear your automotive saga is over

Jeffrey - very glad to hear you weathered the storm and what a great time to get the wipers working!

Chief - yeah, the 1664 is a little speedster with the single reduction gearing. At least the passenger cars slow it down a bit. It will break loose like the real thing if you give it too much throttle.

If you guys haven't checked out Becky's thread on her Disneyland layout, you should. Some really impressive work there.

Jeffery how did you find your join date or did you remember it? I have clicked all my profile things and its not given.

I remembered it. It wasn't hard. June is the month my friend David was born and 2004 was the year I got cable internet service, a BIG improvement over dial-up service.

Jeffrey - very glad to hear you weathered the storm and what a great time to get the wipers working!

It wasn't much of a storm here. We had some wind, high at times, highest maybe 60 mph. Some showers but no big storms, no lightning/thunder to speak of. Power went out about half a dozen times but was never off for more than twenty minutes max. This was a whole lot more comfortable than Rita was.

Just checked on the status of the parts I ordered for my van. The brake caliper is in but the brake pads have been delayed due to the storm. They should be in tomorrow. They had to come from Mississippi. With any luck I can get it back on the road safely this weekend. I don't like having it pull to the right when I hit the brakes.

RT........I'll just send my wife in there the next time and that will keep them honest.  Faster too without all of the snafus.

You should have seen her last night, checking out the repairs with the service guy standing there in our driveway.  Since he was not the one who worked on the car you HAVE to know he was praying the stuff worked!!!!  He looked worried......until it passed her muster.   Laugh

BTW......I don't use the dealer for much of anything except warranty stuff.  The dealer's pricing on labor is horrendous, and price for parts worse.  I go to my local mechanic for all of my maintenance and for repairs after my vehicles come off warranty.  This guy knows his stuff, have been going to him for about 18 years.  And he is located less than a mile from my house, most convenient. Thumbs Up

Hey Ray.........you better get your steering squared away ASAP.  Your Honda is newer, might be even more appealing to a car thief.  And the poor guy might run into a tree or off a cliff trying to make his getaway.  On second thought, leave the steering as it is.  Smile, Wink & Grin

If you guys haven't checked out Becky's thread on her Disneyland layout, you should. Some really impressive work there.

Penny has a true gift.  I never tire looking at her creations, one as fascinating as the next.  Just at look at the attention to detail.  I think she is going to need an aircraft hanger for the size of layout she would need to display all she has built, mostly from scratch no less. Thumbs Up

Afternoon All.

Taking a break , started working on the upper cabinet doors but mercury is getting kinda high. Doing all the sanding out on the patio, didn't want to do it in the garage and maybe screw up the garage door opener. This dust gets everywhere, my dust control stuff is primarily for sawdust.

Time to turn on the AC and pack up the tools, done for the day. Grumpy

Later all.

Later, gang.

Evenin' boys.  Sunny & 82 here in the Mid-Atlantic region.  Back to the grind today.  Swelling went down thanks to meds.  Then today, at lunch, I had a tooth split on me. Lightning Don't stand too close.
