Good morning all,

Debut as team captain was not successful as we lost 4-3 and I was responsible for giving up two of the goals by not marking my opponent properly.  Long night.  Long day.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Jeffery,

This is a debit/credit card issued by my bank and carries much of the same protection provided by a credit card. Refunds are already on the way.

I see no sense in carrying a credit card(s) when a debit card will accomplish the same thing, except where one uses the CC for business and wants/needs to keep expenditures separate.

JACK correct me if I am wrong here and I know you will. Mischief  One advantage in using a CC is it will improve you credit score if paid and using a debit card will do nothing for your credit score. We have no house payment and owe no one anything so it is a way to keep our credit active. I once years ago had not taken out any kind of loan for four years and when I went into the bank they told me I had NO CREDIT history because they only go back three years. We both have debit cards but only use them for purchase around town. NEVER on the internet. Direct Deduction/ Draw/ or call it Debit from you account is not the same as using a debit card on line. The bank knows who they are and that YOU approved the draw.

Each to his own. Do what you like, I prefer using cash for most things.

I personally prefer debit cards I have a couple of credit cards but still prefer debit as I can only spend whats in my account and my bank also guarentees coverage if it is used after lost/stolen or fraud just like a regular credit card and infact if I use my Debit card 10 times a month and I do one direct deposite and look at my acount once a month on line they pay me 3% intrest on my checking account and if I use a atm other than yours ( which all mine are as the bank is in VA and I'm in SC) they refund there charge for using and what the other bank charges also. So me I'll use mine any time.

Good morning. It's 78° with 80% humidity. A tropical storm warning and a flash flood watch are in effect. Tropical storm conditions possible with a fair chance of thunderstorms. The high will be 85° and will feel like 91°.

Getting ready for a bunch of rain here. Wind gusts are up forty mph. I'm looking for the weather to start getting nasty by late afternoon/evening. If the power goes I'll be grabbing the stuff from the fridge/freezer and take it down to my parents place where the fridges and freezers will be powered by a generator.

This morning I'll be going to town to pick up the wiper motor and caliper for the van. Might as well grab a set of brake pads too. I checked the price of the caliper with Advance, Autozone and O'Reilly. They all want the same price - $14.99. Advance wants $10 core charge, the other two want $17. So I can get everything in one place. The pads are pretty much the same price at all three places, differing by $1 up or down.

Got a busy morning. Catch y'all later.

Late good morning to all.  Lazy morning.  Watched a movie.  TWC coming late this afternoon to install cable in Box.  Mowed and mowed yesterday.  Then trimmed all the shrubs and hauled off trimmings.  Did not run them through the chipper/shredder as usual.  Too humid.  Guess what?  Unpredicted rain last night.

Kev, good financial advice.  I use debit card in place of check writing except Hunters Haven, Todd's Train Depot, Team Xtreme [tires and service shop in Town] and groomer.  All friends and do not want them to pay extra %.  Use credit card for on-line due to protection.  Use CC for all gasoline [BP] as get 5%.  Also, restaurtants and get 3%.  When I travel, do the same.  When I worked for Pro Mariner and flew all oveer the country, really racked up $$$ back.  Pay off CC every month so no interest.  Same with Lowes [get 5% every time I use it at Lowes].

Jeffrey, hold on to your hat!!!!!  Stay dry.  Hope you keep power.

KEV.......you and Brutus are exactly right about:

(1)  maintaining credit accessiblity,

(2)  maintaining a credit history for future credit/borrowing needs (car purchases, home improvements and big ticket repair, re-ifi's, emergency), and

(3)  a solid credit score.  It is easier to get credit when you already have easily verifiable good credit established with others.

(4)  relative security against fraud from bank (card) to bank.

I recognize I am now losing the first and second items, possibly the third, by not using credit cards, losing an easily verifiable credit history.  But at this point in my life (age) I am now debt-averse, simplicity-driven, and tax-benefit focused.  I tap $ sources when required where my interest rates are the lowest and/or the tax benefit greatest the greatest.

The potential lenders and potential CC issuers, etc., tap the credit reporting agencies' data base of your credit history with those credit reportind entities (3) that monthly provide such information to them.  Some of the things that don't show up on the reports are mortgages, second mortgages, home equity loans, 401K loans, car loans, property taxes, utilities, insurance, and the like.....arguably the bigger ticket items.  Why are these things not included in our credit history?

For one thing, these particular "lending" entities in the past have typically not provided your payment history to the credit reporting agencies.  Plus the thought might be by a potential credit card company that you would be more inclined in a pinch to pay off these other outfits first to avoid risking losing something tangible but most critical to you (your house, car, electricity, etc.)

Other than your credit card payment history, the potential card issuer or lender therefore has little to (easily) go on, especially with a credit risk on something more discretionary in nature than, say, a roof over your head.  A potential credit card issuer does not want to manually check out one-by-one your behind-the-scenes credit worthiness because it takes too much time and effort (and expense).  They just want to be able to tap the available electronic payment history data and your credit score on the easily "known,"  drop it into their criteria requirement program, and make the decision.  Mortgage, auto, 401K, retirement plan, and credit union loans are secured by plan assets or the physical assets, low risk..

Banks and mortgage lenders WILL go the extra mile with their credit checks on mortgages, second mortgages, and home equity lines.  They will check property tax payment records, tax assessed valuation, market-based assessment, and items that are a matter of public record: liens, judgements, and the like.  Throw in criminal bakground checks while you are at it.

Ironically, there are three things the credit card issuers and potential issuers don't like to see:  someone who holds a relatively high number of valid credit cards with unused credit lines of credit; folks who pay their entire balances off every month; and a lot of credit inquiries by other credit card issuers and other entities.

With the first, their theory is you have a lot of approved access to credit (and cash) which, if tapped, could put you in a hole quickly and might put you in a position to be unable to pay their balances.  Divorce settlement, alimony and child support, addiction, loss of job, medical disaster and aftermath, uninsured or underinsured loss (i.e., hurricane, fire, flood).  The list goes on.

With the second, their theory is somewhat befuddling to us but not to the card issuers.  Why on earth would a credit card issuer or potential issuer shy away from someone who pays their card balances off every month?  Because they won't make money off of you!!!!  Beyond the fees the issuers charge the vendors who accept your card, their exorbitant interest rates and carrying charges are very profitable (usurious) and also help offset their collection costs and losses to bad debt on the high risk credit card holder and those who default on their balances.  For example, my FIL has seen his credit lines on his bank cards unilaterally lowered because he pays his balances off each month.  In a couple of instances he has received notification on some of his other cards that his activity has been too dormant for their liking and they are going to cancel his card(s)!  Meanwhile, the same banks have been known to set up booths at college orientations and (eventually) pass out credit cards like candy.  Go figure..

With the third, a lot of credit inquiries sends up a red flag to potential lenders.  They know something is going on behind the scenes but don't know what, other than a lot of folks are checking you out for some reason.  Although they can see in the past you have been diligent about handling your financial affairs, they rightly or wrongly assume the worst and reject you, even though they have no evidence that your potential balances with them would be at risk.  I don't understand that one either.  It wouldn't surprise me that folks would borrow from Peter to pay Paul to, say, muster up enough cash (through cash advances) to put a downpayment down and buy a house, hoping their credit history on a one month lag would not catch up to them before they received mortgage approval and already closed/moved into the house.

Look.  I don't disagree that each person's options, needs, preferences, and comfort zones differ.  What works for you, what makes you comfortable, is the way you should go.  My opinion on the matter is reaaly not relevant.

But below are the debit card protections (internet or no) currently offered by my bank.  You and Brutus are dead right:  not all banks are created equal when it comes to security, service, protections, or my cost or benefit of doing business with them (annual bank card fees, transaction fees, account fees, discounts and awards programs, interest paid, etc.)

Jack

Lunch time,

WOW my head is spinning like a top and my eyes hurt after reading Jack's SoapBox post. I wish I had as much confidence as he does that everything I said was the correct and best answer or direction possible. Angel But I think I am wise enough. Been getting a long fair for a uneducated slug.

Or maybe it is from all of the dust kicked up by mowing the weeds that are the only thing growing in my yard this year. Whistling

I did have the credit card Co. try to lower my credit line for paying in full each month. I gave them to option to go to H*_ _. They backed off. Yeah

The neighbor came over this morning with George's collar in his hand and told me he thought the cat was dead.  Surprise He said he heard a loud fight outside his window at 5:00am and only found George's collar after he turned on the lights. It would not be a surprise that the hunter could become the hunted out here in the woods but George was asleep on the back deck at the time Jim came over and he looks to be just fine. Smile

Back to the yard.

Good morning all,

A lot to look at re credit cards versus debit cards etc.  I like the air miles I get on CC.  Have not had any problems so far.  Card # was stolen once or twice but CC company cancelled right away and gave me a new number.  I was not held responsible for the fraudulent charges.  Always pay off each month and do not carry a balance.

Foot doctor appointment today for regualar visit for wife and I.  Hard to get a day without an appointment lately.

Got a chance to go to the retired engineer's breakfast again tomorrow.  Friend has offered to drive.  Hope I feel like going tomorrow.  Had a good visit last time.

I have been thinking about downsizing my train collection over time and not leaving it all behind for someone else to worry about.  Trying to wait for economy to pick up but it's still slow.

I also have a lot of magazines to dispose of.  Almost useless to try and sell but I hate to throw them in the trash.  My late friend's wife is going through that now.

Jeffrey, hope the storm doesn't bother you too much.

Missed all the speaches at the convention last night.  Was right around our dinner time and by the time we got through, it was all over.  All I could get was whatever talking heads had to say about it.

later,

Ray

Winds picking up here a bit. Nothing spectacular yet but it could make driving an RV interesting. I picked up the wiper motor for the van and installed it. Yay! I have wipers again! On the brake caliper and pads, the store didn't have them in stock and had to order them. They should be in by tomorrow noon. At present I'm at my parents place but I'll be going home shortly.

Payments just over the minimum don't account for much. It would be much more substantial if paid in full. I actually was making like double payments and I also have been told paying them off each month doesn't really show much but when I went for a house they told me I needed more substantial credit as I was buying used cars for cash so all I had was CC so I tried for a car and told I'm approved but couldn't get the low interest rate because I didn't have enough credit ( I had 4 credit cards at the time 2 department stores 1 visa 1 mastercard) Too many cards with outstanding balances is NOT a good thing. I was also told have about medium balance ( about middle of cards value shows the best as it shows you can make monthly scheduled payments been thru all this finding out what I needed to do  But on other hand a few years later got rid of all my credit cards and could get a car at a very low rate not the best they were offering but very low for that time.

I personally prefer debit cards I have a couple of credit cards but still prefer debit as I can only spend whats in my account Take a class in self control  Smile, Wink & Grin  I have plenty of self control as I paid off all my CC and didn't have one for 12 years as discovered I really didn't need one that car purchases helped me more as it showed making monthly payments for a major purchase still used but not as old or cheap. and my bank also guarantees coverage if it is used after lost/stolen or fraud just like a regular credit card and in-fact if I use my Debit card 10 times a month and I do one direct deposit and look at my account once a month on line they pay me 3% interest on my checking account and if I use a ATM other than yours ( which all mine are as the bank is in VA and I'm in SC) they refund there charge for using and what the other bank charges also. Wink No it all good discussion just show and boils down to that different things work better for some and other for others you just need to see what works best for you. As the main thing I was told that helped me get this home was the purchase of my truck and no late payments and it was about paid off The credit guy for the mortgage said that was the main thing that helped you that and no cc with high balances a few cards with low balances might of helped some but it was great the way it is.

Winds getting pretty stiff here and the power has gone out a couple of times. Looks like this is the beginning of what could be an interesting few days. At least I got my windshield wipers fixed.

Just looked at the forecast and it's just lovely if you're a duck tethered to a boat anchor. Wind and rain, rain and wind. Wind is up to 45 mph.

Well went to doc today about my arm and here was there reply you need a wrist brace as it sounds like carpal tunnel or how ever you spell it lol. I us my hands at work all the time and they say that could be the problem. so now I'm trying to do everything left handed lol and I'm right handed. well to be honest been doing a lot left handed for about 2 months because of the pain and the right hand going numb. Well that answers that and it seems to me this has been coming on for a long time as I've been in to ER with chest pains and this hand has been numb so it was just angina in the chest and hand don't know it could just be your nerves because of the chest pains or because your diabetic Bang HeadLaugh I only asked like 3 different docs if it could be carpel tunnel and they all said it is in your wrist not your fore arm Sigh Well nothing train related today just relaxing. Bought a new TV about 3 weeks ago and its suppose to be here tonight. The one in the bedroom was dying as its a TV from like 2002 so its seen better days. has gone from PA to VA to TN to SC so its been moved its share and in fact it has been moved 4 times in VA alone lol as we moved from one place to another while in VA. it's refurbished 32" flat screen by westing house and it was only $192 so we will see. has 90 warranty which is normal now days but thats it.

Time for me to duck out of here. Weather's starting to get nasty. Sustained wind is at 40-45 mph with gusts of 55+ mph. I can hear tree branches snapping and crashing to the ground. I think one of my neighbors has lost part of his corrugated steel roof. I heard a loud metallic crash from that direction about thirty minutes ago. Can't guarantee I'll be back on tomorrow but I'll be back when I can. See y'all soon hopefully.

Jeffrey, put on your inflatable.

Cash, not worth much since the last 4 years. Whistling

Actually paid for Chinese.  Extremely good.  New restaurant.  Free steak had to be there before 6 PM.  Will do next week.  They still owe me.  Gave me [Wifey] someone elses meal.  Wifey called with complaint.  They have me down for free meal.  Will get fried sweet potatoes in stead of french fries.  They are no carbs.

Got to get up early and take friend Fred and his Wifey to train station.  Riding it to NY for a few days.  Then Raleigh Chamber Partners luncheon.  Free to me as Town paid for it. Whistling  Will watch my diet.  No potatoes or desert.

It's 75 now.

RI-Jack, thanks for the warning it saved me some time.

We spent a very nice day with my cousin and his wife. We started at one of the area metro parks, had a one hour boat ride( senior rate $3.00). and then off for a meal sitting outdoors enjoying the view of the lake. Had  strawberry shortcake with some banilla tonight, but got plenty for the thingy crew..S.J.

Ohayƍ,

I had a nice workout at the gym this morning.  The weather is sunny and warm and the high is in the low 90s.  The humidity is still pretty bad as well, but it should be cooler in a few weeks.  I have a decent amount of tasks to handle at work today and then I can start my four-day weekend.

Blownout Cylinder – That is awesome news! Yes

Puff-Dog (aka: fifedog) – Are you taking photos of your layout updates?  I hope the reaction has settled down.

Kev – I’m glad George is alright.

SP Ray – Did you say you needed help downsizing? Whistling

RT – I hope the docs figure out the best way to treat your carpel tunnel.

Jeffrey – Be safe.

Sayonara,

Joe

Sunny and mid 90's today.  I keep looking to the south east for clouds.

I called Lionel service today to check up on my Hallow's Eve tender that I sent off for service in June.  The reason it went back is that I could not get all of the train sounds that the manual said were there.  There is supposed to be a witch's cakle in the place of a brake squeal.  The reason that is not happening is that there is no motion sensor on the tender.  Lionel service is trying to figure out what exactly the sound system in the tender is supposed to do.  They don't seem to be sure if they have a defective part, or if the instructions and other literature are incorrect.  Going to be interesting to find out.

While I had them on the phone, I asked about the mystery button on the back of the Cab 2 controller.  As I suspected, it is a hard re-set fot the processor in the controler.

All for now.
