Good morning.

Not much going on in this neck of the woods. Just Hot and Dry as toast still. Dots - Sign

Tried to hop on the Tardis last night but missed it. Yeah

Jeffery Prayers for your mom and Prayers for BOC’s results and DougM son. Angel

Chief, Sounds like you almost there on the layout. Good work. Yes

I ran trains for about ½ hour last night before bed. No Pile-ups. Running those K-Line ALCO S2s lashed up. They make a nice pair. Smile

Don’t forget to flush the pot tonight. Surprise

Good story Jack about that dog Mayday. We all hate to loose a pet because they hold a special place in us. Right now we have George the cat. He is enough to handle but we would hate it if one day he did not come home. You know what they say about the hunter becoming the hunted. That could happen out here in the woods. We always feel better if he is inside at night but it is always up to him.

Laz, I had a cockerpoddle that was an expert at Frisbee. Fred was also the smartest dog I have ever had. I lost him in a divorce.  Tongue Tied I bet you can teach Minnie to catch one with a little work.

I grew up in my youngest days on the farm and animals were just animals. If a dog got after the livestock it got dead. That simple. Just the way they thought back then. Indifferent

V8Dennis, I am reading you posts. Nice grab from Flea-bay on the GP-20.  Yes

Rich, I sure hope something hits for you soon in the job market.

Have a good day.

Good Mornin' Ya'll From Cloudy and a Cool Mid 60s Taxachusetts,

Thank you guys for your kind words about our friend's loss of her Dobe Mayday. The stuff I wrote was all true, all a matter of public record.  This was a genuine story of the underdog, the story of comeback and triumph.  Some here including myself have expressed disappointment that the previous owners gave up on Mayday.  The truth be told, very few of us would have tolerated a serial biter as a pet in our homes, and THAT is what she was pure and simple, a danger to herself and others.  There is a lesson to be learned here, beyond dogs.

The truth be told, none of us are equipped to deal with this canine reactive behavior and to mitigate it on our own......because we are not experienced in such matters.  We think and reason like human beings, not the way dogs think and reason.  Dogs are not children.  They are animals whose genetics, all the way back to wolves, drive their behaviors even though they have been "domesticated."

We don't know where to go for help and find ourselves seeking advice from others who know even less than we do.  The vast majority of dog trainers (85%+) have little or no practical, successful experience in these canine behavior matters.  Cesar Milan has built his successful empire for that very reason.  When everything continues to go downhill, folks either go into hiding with their dogs, dump them off at shelters, incarcerate or confine them within their homes, or just dump them on the street.

From 1999 to 2004 Pam and I ourselves hid in our home and yard with our first Doberman, a 6 month old rescue, and a biter.  In canine rescue and adoption, the road to hell is paved with good intentions.  Then we needed the rescuing......during and after 4 years in hiding with our knucklehead pup!

I am a businessman and financial consultant by trade.  One day I woke up and realized I was violating one precept I preached:  stop digging that hole, admit your ineptitude, hire your deficiencies, and get the problem fixed.

There are successful solutions people out there who fix stuff (like this) for a living.  I would no sooner work on my car or perform brain surgery because I am neither educated nor experienced in it.  Why would I therefore think working with a reactive dog would be any different?

So I swallowed my pride, misconceptions, frustrations, and fears and went out and bought the solution......the guidance of the right canine trainer.  The solution was so cheap and simple relatively speaking that ex post facto I then found myself mentally beating myself up for my obstinance, ego, and stupidity.  I should have known better.  Pam and I suffered for it for four years, and so did our dog.

I say guidance because there is little sense having a dog trained by someone else.  You get the dog home after the trainer takes off the rough edges only to find in short order that the dog responds to leadership.  The trainer has leadership and technique when handling my dog and I don't (didn't).  Once back home, the "fixed" dog then soon reverts back to being a knucklehead, back to square one.  Ultimately, one needs the education, insight, and practical hands-on guidance or application handling their own dog.

The story of Mayday is just such a story, of what can be achieved when people ask for help from the right expert people, in anything, but then do exactly what they are told without second-guessing or taking shortcuts.  Just ask for help and then follow the roadmap.

I enjoy the "joy" folks on this forum have with their dogs and cats, just as I rejoice in the pleasures we take from this train hobby.  Sometimes the "instruction manual" is unclear or we misinterpret it.  What do we do?  We ask others here for help, from someone who has been there, has done that.

Later, gang.  A friend of mine just called and he is stuck out on the road with a broken down car.  Procrastination got him as he ignored the symptoms until he dug that hole I was talking about.Whistling  And his car bit him in the rear. Laugh

Good Morning from Blueberryhill RR....

It is a sunny 70 degrees. Going up to 86 today with a chance of rain, later.

Today is a busy day. I have several errands to  run and the usual chores to do. Got my latest copy of "Classic Trains" mag. Lots of steam articles. A nap this afternoon is planned.

Dining car is here with Cheerios for breakfast.

I think I will ship a car load of Cheerios to the Cleveland Indians. They need some energy.

Y'all have a great Tuesday.

Hi Guys, quick post before I hit the garage and work....and before I forget....Bang Head

Angel - Jeff's Mom & Blownout & Jack's friend & puppy...I'm not much of a dog person, but it TRUELY amazes me how people can just give up on an animal.....I don't understand it.

Not much else happening since Saturday night.......Looks like I'll be getting a regular incentive bonus and a group wide raise.  Much needed.....job serch continues, however.

Been hot and muggy/humid last 2 days, sounds like it will continue today as well...

Konnichiwa,

The weather is the same out here: terribly hot and humid.  I worked out at the gym this morning which was a nice way to start my day.  The workday has flown by and I will be walking out the door shortly.  We don’t have any plans for tonight, so we will probably have a nice dinner and relax.  Hopefully it will cool down enough for us to enjoy a family walk this evening.

Doug M. – I hope your son feels better soon.

Jack – I’m sorry for you and your friend’s loss.

AF Ray – I wasn’t happy about dropping the series to the Sox, but I wasn’t too worried since we have such a lead on them; however, I do not like losing the first game of the series to the Os.  Traindood would have a good time if the Yanks lost again.

Jeffrey – I’ll pray for your mom.

Sayonara,

Joe

Evenning.  Well, actually morning [after midnight].  Just came in with kids.  Took them out for the last trip until morning.

Jeffrey's Mom Angel prayers.

Did not get to do Box work until almost dark.  Got it figured out.  One channel in the TIU [a varrible switched to fixed] is dropping voltage.  Shows 18 V until you put a load on it and it drops the track to 9 V.  Put the switching yard and siddings on the same channel [the other varrible switched to fixed].  Was having a time changing DCS varrible to fixed.  Called "old" Spankybird and of course he knew how.  Actually easy.  I had not scrolled far enough down in the menu.

Well, ran new MTH NS Dash 9 that had never been run.  Two Lionel Legacy lashups, two converted to TMCC GP9's lashedup, a Atlas NS and a switcher.  Did a signal check with the MTH engine.  10's all over the layout. Yes  That is great.

Some popcorn and then bed.

Sleep tight

Good Evening All!

Been very busy with work and with only one day a week to myself I finally finished my shelves for my new train room. Had HudsonJohn over last night as we talked (or dreamed) about new layouts. Either way we had a good time. Tue night we will be in da Bronx, I was going to invite traindood but I'm not sure he would have a good time. Laugh

RI Jack - I'm with Laz on the feelings about our pets. I've maybe been without a dog for only a few months in my life and can't imagine being without one. Man's best friend indeed!

JoeD - I don't know whats going on but I'm not too happy about the past week. Now we have fife's team abusing us!

Jeffrey - Angel for your mom!

Later,

Ray

Evening all

Jack - Thanks for the story.  Over the years we've shared many stories of our four legged friends and what they add to our lives.

Pretty nice day today mid 80's for football practice.  The boys did really well tonight.

Good night and may God bless

My mother had to be taken to the hospital today. She's been having some fever issues the past few days and today was so weak she couldn't stand. So an ambulance had to be sent out to pick her up and take her to the ER. Where she goes from there is out of our hands. To say this has the family worried would be an understatement.

Good morning all,

Jack, sorry to hear about your friend's Dobbie.  Hard to lose any pet especially one with such a track record.

Chief, hope you got your electric problem solved.

Block wall guys are back this morning.  Had to remove a section of my fence in the front of house so they could get wheel barrows full of wet cement into my side of the new wall in back yard for filling in voids in cinder blocks etc.  This project is like building the Brooklyn bridge but is still under control I hope.

Noon.  Been watching DVR'd TV.  Did do a check on the one mainline I got going last night.  All is well.  Will do the others later.  Got to go for now.  Have a great week all you workers so my SS will come on time.

Taking another "bug zapper" back to Lowes.  Did not last a week.  Says outdoor use.  Called Customer Service for manufacturer.  Lady said, "If it is going to rain hard, you need to take it in."  ?????  Never heard of such.  I'll go to Home Depot and see if they have another brand.

JACK,

Sorry for the loss of your friends bestest buddy.  It pains me most when someone we know loses their beloved buddy.  They are not just dogs but as you said truly remarkable, lovable, and the unconditional love they show for us.  Every dog shows this to it owner and we in return do cherous these beloved creatures that God has given us even for the short time we have them here in this world.  I do believe that when we are done in this world we will see and meet up with our true friends in the next.  Prayers for your friend and the pet too.

Good Mornin' Ya'll From Sunny and Temperate Cape Ann Taxachusetts,

Have not posted much the past few days.  One of our best friends suddenly and unexpectedly lost her beloved 12 year old Dobergirl, Mayday, to cardiac arrest.  I know, it's just a dog.  But this pup had a story for the ages.

Thrice- returned (three time loser) to rescue for biting people and dogs, our friend Christine nonetheless took on the challenge and adopted Mayday, hooked up with our trainer, and set in motion the most amazing transformation and comeback story my wife and I have ever witnessed in a dog.  This pup went from the scrap heap, rejected and unwanted, to hit the pinnacle of what the rest of us could only dream of with a canine companion.

When the Front and Finish Magazine finished compiling the 2009 Rally combined obedience results for 2009, Christine and her Mayday sat atop the national rankings, the top.  Mayday was the #1 ranked Doberman in the nation.  Then she topped that with the #1 ranking in the nation for all dogs/breeds in the Working Group.

What about real world obedience outside the competition ring you may ask?

Mayday and Christine tirelessly paricipated in one canine charity event after another to help raise money for dog shelters, sitting patiently, doing meets-and-greets with literally thousands of adults and children while educating them in dog safety.  Yes, all this, from a Doberman no less, and one whose three previous owners had kicked to the curb like so much trash.

In June of 2010 Mayday was awarded the American Kennel Club's prestigious THD therapy dog title for racking up over 50 patient visits to extended care rehab hospitals and nursing homes.  The irony with the AKC therapy dog title was that Mayday herself had suffered a serious spinal cord injury early that year and could not stand, let alone walk.  But she battled back against formidable odds from that paralysis to continue what working dogs love, working.  Mayday was able to continue to serve as a four-legged beacon of hope for the hundreds of patients whose lives she brightened considerably.

When she wasn't competing or working, Mayday was also quite the social butterfly and family dog.  Her family included Christine's grandchildren.  Pam and I attended more than one humanoid party where Mayday could be seen meandering amongst the guests, unsupervised and off-leash.  She didn't beg and she didn't snatch food off the tables.  She was too busy quietly working the room, one person after the other, for pets and scratches.  Even people who did not particularly like dogs could not resist this one.

At dog training, Mayday served as the demonstration dog for the rest of us preparing for canine obedience competitions.  She and Christine performed similar duties in private lessons, ones which Christine and Mayday conducted pro bono.  Once again giving back, doing for others, asking for nothing in return, pulling for the success of others, quietly leading by example.

The 2010 spinal cord injury had ended Mayday's competition career, or so everyone had thought.

In October 2011 at the Doberman Nationals in Fitchburg MA, Christine and her Mayday stepped out of retirement, shook off the rust, and astounded everyone who were privileged to witness their final swan song from the competitive obedience ring.  As you might have guessed, Mayday and Christine turned in one last podium finish before a national audience.

Just a dog?

My wife and I will never forget all this dog and her owner, our friend, have shown us and all they have taught us.......about second and third chances, about dedication and hard work, about commitment to others, about unconditional love and loyalty, about facing and beating the odds time and again, about indomitable spirit, and about the supreme value of simply doing our best with our lives, even in the face of adversity.

Hi GUYZ,

64 here this morning at 0500.  My MINNIE got e up at 0300 for a potty break.  She musta got into something but releaved herself after a half mile walk so all ok with her.  Later took her for her 6 mile walk then a 2 mile jog.  She asleep now. very overcast here and was gonna put another coat of polyurethane on swing but think I'll wait til Thursday and drier weather.  I finally sold all my Lionmaster engines on other forum.  I only have 2 Lionmasters left, Big boy and the Western Maryland.  Those I will keep.

CHUCK, our TRIBE is begining to slump again.  Hope they can get on a hot streak.

BUCKEYE, love those pics especially that MINNETONKA Tank engine.  It's smaller then the HENRY CLAY that I was working on the past 3 summers.  VERY COOL!

BANKS< hope you didn't get too much sun?

MITCH again nice family pic.

Stay frosty,

Buckeye Riveter

I headed up a team that did the conceptual study for the new lock that replaces the Davis and Sabin.

Buckeye, very cool!

Only having the Poe lock to accommodate the 1000 footers should have been dealt with years ago.

The lake freighters are fun to watch, seeing them load, unload or transit the locks. Between the Soo an Duluth you get to see it all.

Check out this website  www.boatnerd.com

Here is my daughter and son in Duluth with the 1000 foot Mesabi Miner in the background.

Aloha. Sunny day. No rain. Taking the boy back to Lewis U for his second week of orientation. So that's 3 hours gone. Youngest still sick. Hope he gets better before we have to leave for camp on Tues.

DougM........hope your youngest is feeling better today.  What I don't understand is why you don't use your airplane to take your other son back to school. Whistling

Good morning all,

Ditto on the weather in SE Indiana.  Quiet night at home after the granddaughter's birthday party.  Watched some old Twilight Zones.  Those were good shows.  Semi-quiet day at work.  Wife is down at Bloomington helping Lucas get ready to move.  TBIL and I can drive.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana

Aloha. Sunny and hot. Beauty of a morning though. I'm with you, SJ, heat all the way over our winters. Looks like I'll have to cancel my trip with the youngest up north. Sad. He spent the morning trying to convince Kelly he's find. But probably has pneumonia...  Oh well. I'll wait another few hours to see if the doc says anything before trying to unravel everything. Sounds like a great day, Kev!  Buckeye, thanks for the link to your photos. What a cool museum!
