Good afternoon,

This is my first post for May.  Just wanted to say that Jean is doing well and has an appointment later today with the surgeon.  We are hoping that he will turn her loose at this point.  She has already gone back to work.  Thanks for the thoughts and prayers.

That's great!! Give Jean all my best.

This is WAR!!!!    Angry

Got a live trap and am going to take out some raccoons tonight.  MischiefThe little &%^)*(  Pirate  tore up every flower pot on the deck and then took a dump. Set it with a can of tuna and some cat food.

I have had it. I have George locked in the house and in the morning I will be glad to kill anything in the live trap, that will then be a dead trap.   Laugh

Not much train stuff today but did work on my fifedog project.

Have a good night guys,

Prayers to those of you in need.

The sun came out, the warm air moved in and it's 84 right now. Yep I got the grass cut. Ran some trains today, a couple TMs, a NYC F3 ABA, and a couple steamers. It's warm so probably some Banilla later and then a chat with the guys..S.J.

Still trying to catch up on reading.  Has been a busy couple weeks for me.  Was in Indianapolis for a funeral on Sunday and Monday and back home Monday night.  Late working yesterday and jury duty today.  I was dismissed from jury duty so back to work.

I don't think I'm going to have time for anything train related until Sunday as my oldest son Lucas is making his first communion on Saturday and the wifey has a list of things I need to do.

Evenin' fellas and gals;    Gloomy, dreary and rainy in these here parts, just the way i like it for this time of year. Grass loves it.   Devils humbled those nasty Broad St. bullies, Oh Yeh!  Hopefully more of the same tomorrow nite.  Crush those crumb bums!    Rangers have thier work cut out for them, however i think they will prevail because they have a lot of young players.         later.

I was just watching Richard Hammond's Crash Course as I enjoyed some fish, okra and hush puppies from Captain D's. This time around he was driving an M1 A1A2 Abram's tank. The tank commander had him drive it out onto an obstacle course where he was ordered to run over three classic cars. A 1979 Porsche 280, a 1970 Chevy Chevelle and a 1968 Ford Mustang. He was on the point of panic about each one but was told if he didn't run over them he would WALKING back. So the three cars got crushed. Afterward the commander let him off the hook. All three cars were junkers brought from a junk yard. You just see the relief washing over him. He wouldn't have to face the wrath of fellow car guys. Being a former car guy myself I had been supplementing my dinner with a steady diet of fingernail. Seeing that big tank rolling over those cars just sent chills racing up my spine!

Good morning. It's 72° and cloudy with a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms this morning and afternoon. The high is due to be 88°.

Today I'll see if I can get my parents yard cut before the rain hits. No other plans for today.

54 and cloudy, I might have to cut the grass while it's still wet as rain is in the forecast all week. Me I shut my laptop down as I see no good reason to just leave it on. Now the TV's, that's different, they are on power strips that I turn off each night. They suck up a lot of wasted power. The only small inconvenience is a short wait for the cable box to reboot. I have also filled the house with curly light bulbs but didn't notice any difference in our Edison bill. But there are just the two of us here.

Happy Hump Day to the working folk...S.J.

Konbanwa,

The rain will not stop out here; I wish I could send it to a bunch of you guys.  It is supposed to rain for the next six days or so.  If that is true the baseball team will not have practice tomorrow or a game on Saturday.  We didn’t have a specific meal planned for tonight’s dinner so I made some spam sandwiches for the princess and me.  My wife and older son won’t touch it so they went to have a mother-son dinner at the burrito place on base.  We should have a quiet evening ahead of us.

Jeffrey – I will give the Walters site a try.  I don’t want to try the Bullfrog snot at this point because I want to be able to remove the traction tire and move it to other wheels if necessary to which works the best.  I hope you able to move with less pain today.

SJ – I hope your grandson had a great birthday.

DJ Spanky – Are you looking to build shelves or display cases?  The shelves I bought at Ikea work great and were not expensive.

V8 – We have laptops and leave them on all the time; we put them in sleep mode when we don’t plan to use them for a while.  Here are some websites which discuss your concerns.  I am no expert in this matter and have heard different points of view so these websites provide good information.  Wes’s suggestion about the monitor is very accurate as well.  http://computer.howstuffworks.com/question328.htm http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100505064817AAkW8Mc http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/turn-off-a-computer-frequently-asked-questions

Kev - I’m glad he is recovering.  I hope the Workmen’s Comp doesn’t set you back too much. Laugh

Dennis – You’re probably right about picking up a cheap engine.  There are plenty of HO models to buy here.  We’ll see if the traction tire is a viable option and how it works.

Buckeye – Thanks for the email.  That is a very cool brochure.

Brutus - Congratulations to your daughter.

Sayonara,

Joe

I keep dozing off - prayers for John's co-worker, Doug, Jean and the rest of us and our loved ones.  Chewy is a lot better today, very much her old self.  Kids have just a couple more weeks of school.  My son has been flirting with bad grades in a couple of his classes - mostly from turning in his work late for some reason.  He can't seem to keep it in his head that he needs to turn it in, not just have it in his bag or in his locker.  I sure hope he grows out of this phase, since he has always had really good grades before and he is in the advanced classes - maybe it's a HS freshman thing.  In the meantime, my daughter took the ACT along with HS kids (!) and scored in the top half-percent for 7th graders!  She and two others will get awards at a school function in a couple weeks.  They have a lower level ACT type test for 7th graders, but we paid so she could take the real deal test with the older kids.  She is thrilled and we are very proud of her of course!  Oh well, we shall see how this all plays out!

Don - you should have yelled out "Ramming Speed!"

TARDIS is ready and we have leftover pizza, Sobe drinks, rootbeer, and banilla.  Let's go Mike!

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Jeffrey..........geez, buddy, you need to take it a tad bit easier.  The hair stands up on the back of my neck and I  get aches and pains just reading your posts, worried about you.  Angel  Do your folks still have heavy equiment hopelessly stuck in mud in their lower 40?  Who is going to straighten out the holes, ruts, and landscaping mess?  Hope it isn't you.  It wasn't your idea to move the burn pile in the first place. Bang Head  I miss your Shell station already.Sad

Thanks for the concern. I'm doing OK and making sure I don't overdo it. The tractor was extricated from the marsh the night of the same day it got stuck there. My niece and her husband filled in most of the ruts while her husbands little brother got to fill in the deep holes left by the tractor. Now, we can't have you going into Shell Station withdrawal so here's a photo just for you.

Time for me to call it a night. Tried to call my mother to check on her but the line was dead. Could be one of two things. Something was wrong or the phone was off the hook. Either way I had to go down there and check it out. Turned ouy the phone was off the hook. She hadn't hung it up properly the last time she used it today.

Knee hurts quite a bit after all the activity today but it's stronger than it was yesterday and most of the bruising is gone.

See y'all tomorrow.

Good Evening All,

Had a "easy" day today, and now off for 3 days! Beer

"Now for the Rest of the Story,"

The new Fireman/Engineer is quite interesting, and certainly will be interesting how it unfolds.  She is 58 and even though I'm older, I really wouldn't want my wife doing this job.  It can be very physically demanding, and not the working conditions I would want her in.  But, putting that aside.  The other factor is that it certainly appears that she may have been, at one time at least, had some gender confusion issues, and has taken some drastic actions.  Most of the guys in the "house" are certainly letting her have her space, and no one has any desire to find out for sure.  Unfortunately, she's not getting off on the right foot, she told me she was "hired through the back door" and dropped a few names, not typically associated with the RR.  Then, after the 2nd day of training her trainer was called down for "not maintaining a positive image of management to "new" employees".  (He now has a 3rd boot, only for a couple of days.)   And, as she has some experience in a RR's, offered her trainer a copy of the manual she had written elsewhere, which was not really appreciated.  (The trainer is about 27, and can be quite critical for the first few days.  For the most part training is done by the trial and error method, which contains mostly errors.  It has reminded me somewhat of basic training.  But, I just thought this is all a trial period and how much do I want this job?  Short term I may need to stroke a few egos, and let them know I'm willing to listen.  And things will work themselves out.  Now that I'm into my 4th week, I was right.  Attitudes have changed, I'm complimented more than anything else, and "offered" advice, or "let me show you a trick".  But the new person being hired by someone "outside" the RR, and has had previous administrative roles without actual equipment experience, might find things even more challenging.  Especially regarding maintaining confidences.  So that's the juicy stuff.

Now the important event.

As we run the steam train on the weekends and the Goose on weekdays, Monday morning the train is moved to a siding, and the engine & tender put in the Round House.  Due to the lengths of the sidings and the location of various crossings, the train is broken down into 3 segments.  All switching for the coach s and cars had been completed.  There were 3 of us working the switching, the engineer, brakeman, and me (fireman).  As the engine was going to be down for the rest of the week, it was my responsibility to ensure that the boiler water level was high, to ensure gradual cool down.  As the switching involves a lot of starting and stopping, the boiler pressure drops pretty quickly.  So I need to ADD water not just maintain the water level.  And of course I have to do this by maintaining the fire so its hot enough to keep the pressure up, and not letting the engine smoke.  As we started moving backward toward the round house, I saw that the door was open and it was a straight shot.  As the fireman I need to be watching the left side of the engine to ensure safety.  So when we started moving back I saw the doors open and a straight shot, so I went back to concentrating on the water level.  Then BOOM, the left corner of the cab roof caught the door, and swung it around taking it into the round house.  I look over, and all I see is door.  The engine was stopped immediately, and all the "Aww !@#!".  If the door would have been open another 4" nothing would have happened.  But, that wasn't the case.  So it was determined that the Brakeman was responsible because it is HIS responsibility that everything is clear.  So he ends up with a "Safety Warning", and was rushed away for a drug test.  If another incident occurs within 90 days automatic termination.  All of that didn't make me feel any better, IF I would have looked that direction one more time, I would have probably seen the position of the door and been able to tell the engineer to stop.

Ironically, the Brakeman, is the same person that got the additional "boot" the night before.  After he got back to work after the test, we went back to work.  (I had been assigned to work with him this Monday and Tuesday.    We didn't discuss the incident much, but I know he was looking forward to the next couple of days off.)

As far as the damage, it did tear the track for the door up pretty bad, and I think they are bringing in a contractor to repair.  And will require quite a bit of frame work on the door.  I did meet a lot of the Sr Management as a result, having to make written statements, and being interviewed etc.  But could have done without that.  (I was told I was not responsible in any way, but still makes me feel bad that I didn't see it.)

Sorry, for the long post

As they say "Never a Dull Day"

Don

Well it is finally my turn for the crud.  Woke up yesterday AM feeling like something was coming on......and it did.  By noon my throat was sore, neck glands tender, one ear plugged, sniffles commencing, and my voice was fading.  By late afternoon the laryngitis was complete and my voice totally gone, still is.  Heavy dose of fluids, voice rest, a nap, an ear flush, and a couple of doses of ibuprofen.......and by bedtime I was making a comeback.  This one will probably take more than a few days to pass.

Drove the wifey and a couple of her co-workers to the airport early yesterday AM for a flight to Orlando and business.  So I am a bachelor for a few days.  Wifey called me from Disney last night to see how I was feeling, but I couldn't tell her, told her I'd text her.  I hate texting.

On a related topic, I picked up my first smart phone Saturday, the android-based LG Spectrum.  Sorry DougM.....no Apple iphone for me.  My wife's 4S has a miniscule 3.5 inch screen, but the LG has a relatively huge 4.5" which makes all visuals including the keyboard a lot more pleasant to use.  My son set up a few things for me like the GPS navigation, the Linsky's wireless.  The 1080 HD video and 8 megapixel cameras will make the thing fairly functional.  Started monkeying around with the video camera in bed Saturday night......wifey not amused.  Whistling  Do you guys take out the insurance?????  These suckers can be pricey to replace like if one drops or loses the phone.....without all of the up front discounts and incentives.  Had to sign a 2 year agreement and sign up for the minimalist Verizon data plan.  I think I will take my local phone store's SmartPhone 101 class to bring myself up to speed with this sucker after I have gone through the instruction manual and played with the phone for a couple of weeks.

Speaking of DougM............how are you doing?  Hope all is well and you are on the fast track mend. Angel

Prayers for Jean and for Hudson John's co-worker who had the heart attack. Angel  Last Thursday my wife asked me to take her to the services for the husband of one of her co-workers, sudden heart attack at 50.

RaySP.........in the old days the Docs could hospitalize you, have total control over your intake, and be able to adjust your meds on the fly as required.  Could straighten out your ulcer 90% inside of a week to ten days.......until you went home and adjusted the culinary program. Bang HeadWhistling  I used to have a cast iron stomach, but now that I am older I am finding more and more times my stomach gets set off in the wrong direction, with no pattern to what the culprit food or beverage item(s) is/are.  The amount I eat at a sitting too often borders on gluttony which I think is contributory.  Prayers for your tummy! Angel

KEV........George the cat was not worried about you in the slightest.  He was probably looking to you for a snack, nothing more. Big Smile  Agree with the others, I like your logging set-up.

Roy.........is the brandy new gate to the pool area locked?  If so, we need keys.  Smile, Wink & Grin

LAZ.........t-minus 22 days to retirement. Thumbs Up  Wear DEPENDS on your last day so you don't soil your pants in ecstasy, sprinting to your car after you have clocked your last minute.  Laugh

Spanky.........I love the way you get Corey and Tyler involved with the display shelving. Thumbs Up

Dennis............ a local home invasion?  Nasty stuff.  Glad the innocent homeowner had the equalizer.  We have a tendency to think this type of thing won't happen to us.  My wifey and I were talking about the same thing recently.  I reminded her that it was her "mandate" we leave all of my guns locked in my nephew's gun safe back in Chicago when we moved out here to the Northeast nearly 25 years ago.  She always was and is to this day deathly scared of guns, and I have been consistently unsuccessful getting her to just go shooting to blunt that fear, can't get her to budge. Bang Head

SJ........it was a shame that Lionel layout fell victim to that fire. Sad

RT.........so your Doc thinks your BS is good?  So do we.  Whistling

Chief........I thought you said your Pam was going to be going back to work and that your mornings would become gloriously free to goof off.  Doesn't sounfd like you are doing much goofing off.  Read about your 90 degree temps.  We hit 34 for a low here a couple of nights ago.

V8 and Chief.........bumper crop of ticks up here too due to our mild Winter.  Maximus the dog is protected with some permethrin-based topical flea and tick treatment (Biospot I think), admiistered once a month.  The ticks may hop aboard Maximus, but they don't bite (engorge), then leave their ride, looking for another victim....like me.  I must taste OK.  Bang Head

V8........I leave my PC on standby all day unless I am leaving the house or going to bed........don't know how much power is consumed on standby.  What could be the harm powering it back up versus leaving it on standby?  Where are the PC gurus when you need them to answer this question? Bang Head

Later gang!!!!

Jack

I turn my laptop off except when I expect to be back to it shortly. I see no reason to leave it on, even in sleep mode...S.J.
