Good afternoon guys,

Well Jim form next door and I got 3 loads of gravel today before he had to leave for work. He works second shift so we can only work till noon. That is good with me. Looks more like we will do about 30 loads in his gooseneck dump trailer. It can’t do more that 6-ton per load but that would be about the same as 9 semi trucks so it should help out the lane a lot. It needs it bad. It will take longer but why pay someone in a big truck where you have to pay for their fuel and time too. We can get more gravel this way.

Blownout Cyl.

My little toe is all Technicolor this morning..probs busted it...may need to get it checked out...SighWhistlingMaybe post a picture of the toe for us. Smile, Wink & Grin Seriously take care of that.

Chuck, If I don’t take the wife grocery shopping we don’t get any.

Smbob, get better, Nice Beep. I need to know where to get the part you put in the smoke unit. The other one I have did the same thing. Fan quit??  Huh?

DougM, the cars just got here today I will post them once I get them unpacked.

Chief, your right they do ride the wind.

Laz, SJ and Pat, we use our grill all year and it is hooked to the house LP tank so we never have to fill tanks. Ours is just about dead and we need to replace it. Any suggestions on what we should get? It doesn’t have to be big with just Sandra and me.

Darren, sounds like a good trip and a better reason for it.

V8 glad you got your teeth back.

SPRay. Good luck with the stomach problems I get those too and sometimes it takes weeks to clear up. Ick!

RIJack You are so right about the little ones. Humm,,,mothers day I wonder if she would like one of my new Santafe passenger cars for that day?? BTW They just got here and you did a nice job re-packing them after the test run.

Banks, the hillclimb sounds like a great time.

Time to unpack the new cars Yes and then cut grass.  Sad

Prayers to all in need.  Angel

Hello all,

Rainy mid 60's here.

We need the rain. Hay is mature a month early and very short. The cows are still in the barnyard eating hay because we haven't finished fence repair. If they were out the pasture it may or may not be enough. Hope to get corn planted and fence fixed soon. Then on to hay making. Hopefully since its early there will be a substantial second cutting.

Went to the first Hillclimb Sunday without being a participant. Part of me wants to "Unretire."  Part of me is glad I retired. Just didn't seem right not to ride.

SS fund calls

Prayers for those in need

Good Afternoon From rainy Cape Ann,

Thanks for all of the well wishes re the crud my wife and I are hopefully seeing fade into the rear view mirror.  Yesterday I mowed my brains out, or whatever is left of them, in anticipation of the front that moved in overnight from points West.  Maybe I overdid it a bit because I was feeling overly tired after dinner last night, fixed that with a 2 hour nap, then went to bed.  Rain in the forecast until Sunday.  Lord knows we need it. Still our total precipitation is short about 6 inches year-to-date.

Just a reminder, boys.  Mothers Day coming up this Sunday.  I find myself in the annual quandary over what to get my wife.

Darren........... Thumbs Up and congratulations on your niece's graduation from college.  She certainly did not pick a piece of cake major, double major to boot.  Angel she lands a job.

Dennis.......you are a glutton for punishment.  You took 3,800 photos of the daughter's ballet?!? Surprise  It will take you weeks to photoshop them all. Bang Head

JohnnyF.......prayers continue for Jean.  Hope her visit to the Doc yesterday gave her a clue as to the cause of the dizziness.

Laz, JoeyD, Roy, and RaySP.  I keep my gas grill outside year round and use it!!!!  Even when it is snowing because I hate stinking up the house ar the cleanup (broiler pan).  I  keep it covered and free of snow, but the weather elements probably don't do it any favors.  The Kenmore I bought a year ago has 4 stainless steel burners, and we'll see if they last any longer than the cast ones on my previous Weber.  Like Roy, I have a digital thermometer with a wireless gauge.  I found I couldn't go by the cook time recommendations that come with grills because I always used to incinerate everything I cooked.  Daughter bought the thermometer for me.  Now I take my time and cook a lot slower.  Ray.....what is with all of the grill cleaning you mention?  I oil the grates before cooking and might spend max two minutes cleaning the grates after each session while they are still hot, and the gunk comes right off with a wire brush, look like new.  That's it!!!!

JoeyD and Laz......one of the women we dog train with is training for a half marathon with her 6 year old Doberman.  I don't think she will be assaulted any time soon while out on her training runs.  Smile, Wink & Grin

JoeyD and AF Ray.........nothing disappoints me more than to see the sports teams decimated by injuries because we get such a watered down product.  I'd rather lose to the Yankees with a healthy Rivera than win against them without him.......until the playoffs start. Laugh  As I said a couple of weeks ago, the Red Sox are done this year, key injuries to starters and a mega-underperforming pitching staff.  The natives here are restless.  Manager Bobby Valentine taking quite a bit of heat.

Blownout.........we almost used cedar when we built our deck twenty years ago.  It was the wife's initial choice until she inspected the pallets of boards that were delivered and sitting in our driveway, pre-construction.  It would have been sliver city for folks and kiddies with bare feet.  Why we switched to the redwood.  You won't be disappointed.  Just keep it clean and sealed (clear).  Will retain its beautiful color. Thumbs Up  You won't be disaapointed biting the $ bullet on your choice.

KEV........the grandchildren wear me down too.  They are the most curious of creatures, want to take out and investigate everything that isn't nailed or glued down.  The place looks like a bomb went off 10 minutes after their arrival.  I think they don't comprehend the words "Don't touch!"  Thumbs UpSmile, Wink & Grin  The SIL advised me Saturday I needed to child-proof the edge of the tables.......the 2 year old fell and bashed her head on a table in the family room.....about two minutes after she tripped and fell in the kitchen, hitting her head on a chair.    Told him to buy her some hockey pads and a helmet and put it all on her......easier to injury-proof a child rather than child-proof an entire house. Laugh

V8......man, you are having never ending problems with those dentures.  I don't know what the solution is, but I sure feel foryou when it comes to eating.  I'd seriously consider a lquid diet.  BeerDrinks

RT.........mailed off to you KEV's no-longer-new-in-box, blue-striped Santa Fe passenger cars for to you to continue "testing" them.  You should have them by tomorrow. Whistling

Chief........when you retire from mayordom you van start your own landscaping business. Stick out tongue

Pat.........I think it is DougDG that strenuously advises against greasing thos poles.  yes, it keeps the pesky critters at bay but also keeps away the pole dancers. Whistling

Brent........you cannot possibly be so busy you can't stop in for a cup!  Hope you didn't suffer another home improvement project injury. Whistling

Later, gang!

Jack.

Morning all,

Roy,  the fork with built in thermometer sounds handy.  I have a regular meat thermometer but not as easy to use on the grill.  Do you have a gauge on your propane bottle or do you are keep an extra one?  I had an in line gauge on my old grill but the hose on the new one isn't long enough to accomodate it.  I don't grill enough to keep an extra bottle all the time.  I got an adhesive strip at the hardware store that you stick on the side of your tank.  You pour hot water over it and it will change colors indicating where the propane level is.  Haven't tried it yet but it sounds kind of messy with the water thing.  Maybe a sponge dipped in the hot water would do the same thing without getting water on the grill bottom.

V8 Dennis, glad you got your dental problem fixed.  Getting some extra grinders in the back sounds like a good idea.  I have some and they work great.  Keeps the pressure off those front teeth.

Pat, glad you are posting again.  Don't worry we won't forget you.  We need you to monitor the Chief now and then.

Been having cream of rice and soft boiled eggs for breakfast lately.  My stomach is very happy with that.  Reminds me of grits but not as rough.

later,

Ray

It will be low 70s today, we have sun so far. Pat it was granny that would not go out yesterday, say's she's afraid of falling. I'll bet she would go if it was a girl thing. On the other hand, we went this morning and bought a lot more groceries than I would have. On the grill thing, I remove the burner spray it with cooking oil and put it in the garage for winter. It seems to be lasting longer this way. A good chat last night...S.J.

Good Day CTTFans!

Back from a brief vacation as the family traveled to Wichita, KS to see my youngest niece graduate from collage from Friends University.  Out of all my nieces and nephews she is the only one to obtain a collage degree (Double major Zoo Science / Field Biology) so I am extremely proud of her.  It will be tough to get a job right now in her chosen field but see is looking at options until something opens up.  Right now she is 1-of-5 remaining out of 200 that applied for a position that she is trying to get into right now so I'm pulling for her!  Got some Railfanning in while out there too and will have a blog entry up in a few days about the trip.

Hello All:

Been bush hogging the fields behind the cows. Plenty of grass so far. Even have a half a barn of hay left over because of the mild winter. THANKS Al Gore!

Garden is up and running but no tomatoes as yet . Some advantage to having CHIEF'S weather.

Our grill gets used several times a week as well as the smoker. It's true the grill burners don't last. I have replaced them twice.

Still working on the train camera. Any helpful hints for using it?

I saw a Raccoon slide down the bird feeder pole, so the grease is working.

RT you have an understanding wife, what with all of the train tracks, high and low, around your place.

SJ or was it Chuck -  My  wife also fusses when she has to go shopping in the rain. Her car is  8 month old and only had one gas fill up. Sits in the drive most of the time. I prefer my 12 Yr. old truck.

Notice how windy this post is? I am trying to catch up before you all forget me!

Good morning all!

Cloudy and cooler today (70) and 84% humidity. Had a nice shower late last night (o.25") and chance for showers all day today - clearing tomorrow and 80 for next couple of days.

Busy day today as usual.

RT - take care of the toe!

Morning.  Partly cloudy.  Rain on the way.  Garden growing good.  Mowed my grass and two neighbors' yesterday afternoon.  Voting day.  Off to go get more grasscarp for pond.  Ticks are horrible.  Got 5 off of me yesterday afternoon and last night.  Think they ride the wind and fall from trees.  Pecan blooms are falling bad.  The pollen is getting with me.

RT, are you diebtic?  If so, get that toe looked at right away.  Our police chief is and had to have big toe and part of his foot removed from a "sore".

Aloha Paradise. Looks like sun - to send off to Mike C, SJ and points east. Getting my stitches out today - yay!
Mike C, I resonate with your feelings. Glad for Lucas! We're on final grade watch here too.
Prayers for your continued recovery, SmBob! That Beep looks nifty.
DJ, that was a cool kite - hope you can get it out agan with Tyler.  I took Ben out a few weeks ago and the wind was so strong, the string roll was ripped out of his hand. Last we saw, the kite (one of the tetrahydral ones) was zooming off towards the airport.
BlownoutCly, bathtub falls can be deadly. Hope you rested.
Kev, can't wait to hear about your SF cars.
Laz, do you keep your grill outside all year? Do you cover it?
8nT, that Corvair on the Monte Carlo chassis with the 455 isn't really a Corvair (LOL).  Interesting about the tire camber!\

Hi GUYZ,

60 here and rain again.  Helped BRO clean out rain spouts yesterday.  Took apart old grill.  Ran an easy 2 miler with dog.

RAY, your welcome on the steam fix.  Grill is your mid range pricewise.  but with all grills the burners will sooner or later need replacing.  The  Huntingtons are located in Indiana and parts will be no problem in getting.  I always try and buy American made.  Gotta keep this country working.

Stay frosty,

Good evening all,

And it is a good evening.  I have been laying low here recently, holding my breath.  Saturday we went to Bloomington for a graduation recognition ceremony for Lucas.  He could have gone thru the entire graduation ceremony, but did not want to.  His major field of study had a smaller ceremony for those in his area of study.  He was going to skip that as well, but we insisted he go to that as we wanted to go as well.   Afterward he was glad he went.  The reason I have not said anything until now is that not all of his grades were in.  We got the results tonight and he passed them all!!!  Lowest grade was a C and his GPA for the semester was over 2.5.  Now all he has to do is pass the 3 classes he is taking this summer and he will be done!!!  He is only taking one class at a time so it should go well.  Relief is the word I can express to all of you.  I am sorry I have not posted more, but I have been on pins and needles since the end of the semester.  Although I know it is not over yet, I think Lucas is rounding the fourth turn and Pat Vidan is standing there waving the checkered flag with Tom Carnegie announcing trackside and Sid Collins in the radio booth.  (Sadly, none of those people mentioned at the track are still with us.)  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana

Hello all

Looks like we may have some weather coming thru over the next couple days, maybe even a dusting of the Chief's favorite on the mountain.

Quiet night tonight, VLBI tests are done and we helped our engineer pack up so he can get home tonight. (VLBI is where we tie in w/ ohter telescopes, this time Chile and Hawaii). But we have a major receiver installation coming up. This has been a long time in coming so it will be interesting to see how this goes.

Jeffrey - hope you feeling better soon

Laz - thanks for the link, got my steam fix for the evening

8N - thanks for the history, although I thought the recommended practice was to run the front tire pressures lower and most folks went ahead and set them all the same on the early models? It's interesting too the the VW never got involved in all of this as they had been using swing axles since the beginning. Maybe w/ their distinct lack of horsepower they were less apt to get into trouble. They went to the full IRS conversion though in 67 for the bug and 68 for the bus. Been impressed w/ the rear suspension of the later model Corvair. Seems like a fairly robust design.

Still fighting the crud, but think I am getting better. Worse part is I'm wiped out most of the time. Hopefully the warm, dry weather at home will bake it out of me.

Here's some photo's I took yesterday but was too tired to post them on the SPF:

Cloudy and 60's today.

Bob - at the Buick GS meet, a guy usually shows up with a Corvair that he set on a Monty Carlo chassis and is running a 455 Buick engine up front.  Runs in the high 10's and low 11's.

Caution - automotive history lesson follows.  Quit here if you are not interested.

As far the safety of the Corvair goes, The 1st generation had a swing axle suspension - the rear axles were pivoted in at the transaxle and nowhere else.  OK system, very similar to what Mercedes was running in the late 50's and early 60's.  Worked OK for normal driving, but got twitchy at the limit.

This type of suspension causes severe camber change on the rear tire as the suspension travels up or down.  Ad the camber of the tire increases, the contact patch is reduced, causing the tire to lose traction.  This was on the back of the Corvair, so the back end of the car snaps around.  When the tire pressure was low, it made this condition worse.  In '63 or '64, an extra transverse leaf spring was added to reduce the camber change of the tires.

I had a '73 Spitfire that had a swing axle rear suspension.  You could feel the camber change on the rear tires.  When that happened, very gentle steering, throttle, and brake inputs were necessary to avoid a surprise.

Basicaly, the 1st generation Corvair was safe if maintained as directed, and driven sensibly.  Kind of sounds like the rolling Ford Explorer issue from a few years ago, dosn't it?

Nothing new on the train front.

All for now.

Evening all!

Supposed to rain here tonight (nothing major) and temps dropped from high 80's to 70's this evening. Maybe some rain tomorrow and high of 72.

DougM - you bet - drop me a note - this week faucets are my game - got one to fix on the kitchen sink now - but it is not leaking - just sticking when you try and rotate it. Glad you are up and about! Best way to promote healing.

John F - Angel for Jean - I had a bad vertigo bout last year.

Ray, Jeffrey, and others - Angel and get better soon.

Kev - those are sweet cars - I got the set on pre-buy last year. I had (and still have) the original Lionel 218 SF War Bonnet 027 Alcos and the SF Blue Stripe cars. Got them for Christmas 1958 or 59. Love the set and they still run but I hate to put the wear and tear on them - soooo - got the new versions and picked up some Williams 027 Alco SF War Bonnets on sale last year at York and now I have a very nice running set! And I could use a tractor/loader right now. I have about 25 yards of soil to remove from a side yard. Cannot find anyone to do it. Getting large amounts of dirt removed when one lives in the middle of DFW is extremely difficult and expensive. If I haul it in the PU it will cost me $35 per load to dump it (ah - shovel it in and out myself) and 40 miles round trip. Amazing that the landfill needs soil to pack between layers and I have to pay to dump a couple of PU loads?

Ray - I have already been through 2 propane tanks this year. We cook out a couple time s a week. Get one of those grilling forks with a digital meat thermometer built into it. Made the world of difference in my cooking on the grill. I quit burning and drying everything out.

Got part of the fence stained yesterday evening and today finished installing a few hardware items (i.e. T-Brackets) on the gates. Couldn't stain because of the pending rain. Cut a volunteer tree out of the fence since it cooled off.

Have a great evening all!

Regards, Roy

Haven't gotten much done today other than having my father send off a package for me. It's just been too painful to move around much so most of the day has been spent watching TV. I did manage to get about an hours worth of sleep earlier. I hope to get more tonight.

Almost noon here,  how is everybody?

I know we have a few walking wounded today including me.  Jeffrey, glad you got the bleeding stopped on the foot.  Your mention of diverticulitis reminded me that I have been told by my G.I. doctor that I have that too although he never said how severe it was or took any specific action yet for that.  However, it makes me wonder if my current problems might be related to that.  I have been thinking that my problem is an old ulcer that was reactivated but I could be wrong.  Nothing has been diagnosed yet on this latest episode.  I also have ulcerative colitis which has been an ungoing problem but has been under control with meds.   Now this.  Please! I don't need anymore defects.  I have an appointment with gastrointerologist on May 29th because he would not or could not move it up.

V8 Dennis, sorry about your denture problem.  You have had a lot of bad luck with that haven't you?  I have two partials but have been lucky with not too much breakage.

Laz, congas on your new, I assume gas grill.  It must be a four burner with side burner.  Most of them are nowadays.  I finally started using mine but still need more trial and error cooking things on it.  I don't fire it up unless I have enough cooking to justify the clean up.  Otherwise we cook in the house.  I think I got mine for around $200 after discounts but maybe you got a better one.  I hear that the achilles heel on some of the cheaper ones is the burners.  They don't last too long but maybe the better ones do. Mine was guaranteed for one year but I have only used it twice and the guarantee is almost up in June.  Oh well, hope I got a good one.

Warm weather this week so have to walk early or late unless we drive to the park and walk under the shade trees on a circular walk.

Did not attend train meet yesterday for the second month in a row but no great loss.

Local people are trying to get another referendum on the ballot to raise taxes on cigarettes again by $1.00 per pack.  Won't affect me because I'm a non smoker now but I don't think it will do much good.  The money will just go into a general fund and not for cancer research etc.  Surveys show that most smokers are poor so they are only hurting them.  Price here would be over $5 per pack.  How about taxing booze more?  Bet you would hear some screaming on that score.  Point is, it is an unfair tax to single out one segment of the population IMHO.SoapBox, Sorry for the rant.

later,

Ray

Holy frijoles!  Page 13 and I'm just now posting for May.  Lots goin' on.

Did get a nice something-something from Kev just now.  It looks sharp, and everyone will be envious.  Will post on a future SPF.

Did go trackside yesterday in Harrisburg, PA.  Not a real busy day on NS.  Cloudy 'til 1745, and no Heritage units (a week late we found out) Sigh.
