Lunch Time:

60's and Rainy.

Last night my son received an award from the Mayor and Council for being in the top 5 for responding to emergencies in the Volunteer Fire Department. He works hard at it. we are proud of him.

Laz, 18 days to go. I have 204. November 30 is the date for me.

RI Jack, my family and friends love to bring me to look at a used vehicle. I agree with Pat on a new vehicle. Most of mine are bought new, I am known to put over 250,000 on them before I "retire" them.

Spanky, Our last few Health Fairs at our Location, we have had 100% participation. We had a couple of people in the past sent directly to the hospital. We have a health kick going on here. Since that started we have the best attendance we ever had.

Roy, You have the Perfect Mother's Day Plans.

SJ: Since my wife started selling the Lemon Ice Cream, another shop nearby started also. I checked it out. My wife's is better.

I will try to make the Tardis tonight.

Thoughts and Prayers for all in Need. Cancer is a horrible disease, come to think of it, ALL DISEASE is horrible.

Enjoy the Day!

Morning all!

Quick break. Low 70's today, sunny, and high of 80-82 predicted for next 7 days - ahhhhhh sweet!

Blownout - Angel

Jeffrey - I always thought those motors were the best sound system ever!

Jack, KEV, LAZ, and Ray - The thermometer I have is built into the fork. Extremely easy to use and it even has the various meat temperatures (beef, poultry, etc., temps for rare, Medium, well done) for each printed on it. Push button on/off - easy to clean. Love that thing! I also keep my grill outside under a cover until recently - I need a new cover as the old one split and does not keep out rain (not that this feature is needed a lot here in the summer). Ray I do not keep extra tanks and I do not have a gauge. If I run out of gas I just take it into the house and finish it inside and pick up another cylinder later. They sell them EVERYWHERE here - I think my dentist even has them?

KEV - the SF set looks great!

John F - any activity right now involving guns and my HS son might not go well for me....Pirate

Mike C - Congrats on Lucas! We have all been watching your postings on his journey as he has moved from HS to college. Nice to see!

Regarding Mother's Day plans - time for Doug M to produce the annual CTT Forum C'Pot check list! From my end - anything she wants - whereever she wants - when she wants, etc.....Bow

Have a great day all!

Regards, Roy

Mike C - I have 60 bags (120 cu ft) of mulch left to spread. Already spread 150 bags. Gets monotonous, but it DOES look good.

Chief - You can now get married in NC?

I do the same as SJ, spray grill with Pam before cooking, clean with steel brush after cooking.

Jack - I stopped buying used car 50 yrs ago, now only buy new . I felt I was always buying someone else's problems. Can't get the kids to buy new, and they are always having them in for repairs.

Darren - Remember 2 bunnies make 10 in 31 days, 10 bunnies make 20, etc. Have you thought about a 30-06?

Kev - Our Son takes one of the spare tanks, then I don't have it when I need it.

Good morning everyone from the Toy Train Museum,

Sun has been in and out so far today.  Still sorting the Marklin catalogs from a large donation.  A lot we already have but some we don't and these will be added to our files.  Almost done and then will start on some smaller European companies.

Hope the Sun comes out to stay as I started shooting Summer pistol league with my son on Wednesday evenings.  First I have shot formally for about 10 years.  Needless to say I am very out of practice.  Oh well it is fun.

Have a great day.

Hi GUYZ,

KEV,  we too have the grill hooked up to the house propane and we had that for years now.  We just bought a HUNTINGTON REBEL from Cabellas.  It is American made and getting parts is no big deal.  It's only PAM and I so this is big enough.

Stay frosty,

Always knew that Yankee had a good Southern heart. Yes

Go to Lowes tomorrow afternoon and pickup the big Box/layout order on the big trailer.  Soundstop is in.  Will load in reverse order of usage.  Then store under shelter.  Pull out as we need it.

Prayers for BC.

Later.

Good morning. It's 69° and mostly cloudy. The high will be 82° and there's a 20% chance of rain.

No particular plans for today. I have to run a couple of errands for my father later. For now I have to go and prepare my mothers breakfast.

Good morning,

No gravel work today, my neighbor has a Dr. apt. I have grass to cut and it looks like my Rio-Grande horse car, an ALCO front power truck, and some decals for my newest fuel storage tank will get here today. Thumbs Up

Had a bumpy ride on the Tardis last night with the guys. For some reason I keep getting throw off? Finally I gave up and went to bed. Zzz

Thanks LAZ for the grill info. I sent you a PM. Yeah when we built this house I plumbed a stub to the deck for LP to use with the grill. It is the only way to go if you have LP for other things at the house. My kid has never asked to barrow my LP tank. Laugh

Chief, I will be sure not to put a picture of George on my Avatar, I wouldn’t want you to start calling me RT. Smile, Wink & Grin

RIJack, Sandra likes the new Blue Strip cars but did not respond well to the suggestion she could pick out the one she liked best for her Mother’s Day gift. Well it was worth a try.  Whistling

We don’t do most of the stupid "Hallmark" holidays. Never have and no time to start now. I will get her a card and hope both kids call.

Blownout Cyl, Don’t mess around with the Bone C thing. Spend the dime and get to the best place you can, asap. Angel

Prayers for all in need. Angel

Have a good one everybody.

Good Morning CTTFans!

It's 51F and clear as we head up near 80F today.  Having a small bunny issue in our neighborhood and it's been hiding during the day under our shed so I put up some wire list night.  The shed sits on a concrete slab so it can't dig under.  Our neighbor to the east had a trap out but has small kids so he doesn't leave it out much and I think the bunny's home is under his porch.  Hoping we can catch it and take it over to the park rather then kill it but then again with the wire up the local fox might get a meal here soon too.  My thoughts for all those in need and wishing all a great day and week ahead...

Aloha. Sunny and cool in Chicago. Sen. Lugar's civility will be missed, Mike.  Nice ride on the Tardis with some of the guys last night. Glad you noticed those bulbs, Brutus. Laz, I asked about the grill because I can't store it inside and I've covered it but it sure gets beat-up. I'm going to look for a better cover -- I use aluminum foil - crumbled up - to scrub the grate. Brutus, thanks for the reference to those British layouts. They give me some ideas for Ivor.

Good Mornin' Ya'll From Still Overcast Taxachusetts,

Rain in the forecast again today through Saturday, on and off.  A pleasant mid 50s to start the day and mid 60s for a high.  It is nice to be able to have the windows open, air out the house a bit, and to hear the birds chirping up a storm.  Yesterday's rain from came points West, but today I am getting it from the Chief as this front is coming up from the South.  We need the rain, so I can't complain.  Thank you Midwest boys for helping us out, and to Dennis, RT, and the Chief for sharing the wealth today.

Son has been asking for advice (again) on buying a used car from a used car dealer.  These small, used car only places get their cars from auction and from new car dealers, the ones the new car dealers don't want to keep on their lots and resell.  New car dealers usually auction out most anything older than 5 years and/or are beyond 60K miles.

In any event, one has to use due diligence when buying pre-owned (nice term).  There may be little or nothing wrong with the used vehicles, just higher mileage and a tad too old for the new car dealers to want to monkey with or assume the short used car warranty that dealers need to offer by law.  You can get some very good, practical, and lower cost deals this way if you do your homework, ones that will soldier on while being totally safe and very dependable.

So my son already knows my drill when I start the used car buying process, after I have narrowed down what I want but a couple of months before I pull the trigger.

A Carfax is a good start, but they are only as good as the info. that has been reported, captured, and then provided to us.  So a Carfax is not enough.  Checking on the ownership change(s) on the vehicle title history gives one an idea if the vehicle has been a one car owner and the sex of the owner.....and the implications these pieces of info may glean, avoiding anything with a salvage title.  If one can secure the original manufacturers' service records (routine and scheduled maintenance, recall, warranty work, and technical service bulletins), all the better.  Prior owner's service receipts, better.  The Consumer Report's Used Car Buying Guide (and similar) are helpful (JD Powers).  Two blue book prices to get a lay of the land on fair prices (KBB and NADA).

But the other things I think are just as important as any and/or all of these previously mentioned things is to spend a few bucks on one's private mechanic's hands-on inspection and assessment, a thorough test drive, and trying out all of the electrical accessories to see what works and what doesn't.

When my son bought his last used vehicle (Hyundai Sonata), my mechanic provided his opinion of Hyundai, then came up with over $1,100+ in required maintenance work to bring the car up to snuff......like a timing belt that had not been changed at the prescribed 60K miles, rotors that were serviceable but needed to be turned (plus new pads), a slowly oozing power steering pump (with rusted lines the mechanic said are claasic on this vehicle), and an oozing water pump.

All of these things were listed by my mechanic and then presented to the used car dealer.  The latter refused to budge on the vehicle price, but he agreed to have his mechanic do the work......and he did (and verified by my mechanic right before we took delivery).  Result?  A trouble-free value for my son.

What did my son learn?  Apparently some things but not the ones I consider most important, mentioned two paragraphs above.  He found a very clean, one- owner Honda Accord with 76K miles.  I offered to pay my mechanic to go over the car as I had done the last time around.  But the son, with exceedingly limited automotive knowledge and experience in these matters (like most of us), has let his emotions run away with him, wants no part of my mechanic’s assessment, even though I told him I would pick up the car at the dealer and have my mechanic's assessment done for him, and even pay for it!!!! Bang Head

No problem.  It’s his money, and I have learned that with our kids and grandkids there is little value in creating a chasm, just to be “right.”  Better off stating one's opinion and then turning them loose in most cases.  Not easy for me to let things go.

The reason I write this today is simple.  You, I, and we are all in the same boat with our families and kids.  In too many instances I have learned the hard way that parenting and grandparenting is all about teaching our (even adult) kids that they should use any and all of their resources in life, to seek out expert advice, to not let their emotions and ego get in the way of making better choices, and to let others make the mistakes.

Guess my son is too much like me. Bang Head  Or maybe my wife. Whistling

Laz, spray the grates with a Pam type spray before you grille and leave the burner on high after with some alum foil on the grate, that will burn off most of the mess. When it stops smoking you should be ready for next time. 55 this morning , expecting some showers later. No big plans for today. A nice chat with some of the guys last night...S.J.

Hi GUYZ,

60 here and only 18 more dayz to go!  A little less for meWink.

KEV,  we too have the grill hooked up to the house propane and we had that for years nnow.  We just bought a HUNTINGTON REBEL from Cabellas.  It is American made and getting parts is no big deal.  It's only PAM and I so this is big enough.

JACK, a bout running the dog in the marathon.  Tell your friend that she better pack lots o water for the pup, they need it more then we do.  Tell will dehidrate faster then we do and also the pads of their paws got to be watched.  Especially if it is very hot out.  Not a good thing.  Had my JANE dog with us hiking on a rails to trails and she burnt her paws pretty bad.  She couldn't walk very far for a week.  So watch them tender paws.

Also what do you use on the grates before cooking?  I have porceline coated grates and cleaned then with a scouring pad last nite, after cooking.  Had to use lots o elbow grease to get em clean.

Stay frosty,

BoC - prayers for your foot!  Hope all are well and healing!  Nice chat with the guys tonight including SJ, Charlie, Kevin and Doug.  Doug, glad you are doing better.  Mike - congrats on Lucas!  Hang in there, almost done!  Jeffrey, hope you are feeling better too!  I got sucked into fixing my wife's old laptop again last night and then backing everything up, finally.  It quit working on the weekend for some reason, but apparently the battery was dislodged somehow?  I cleaned it and put it back in, and everything worked fine.  I just figured out that my wife also put the wrong bulbs in the hallway light fixtures.  They are those cfc bulbs inside a fake regular style lightbulb shell.  She put them into ceiling "bubble" style fixtures.  This is a recipe for disaster, as I found out a couple years ago when I did the same thing.  They get too hot and the outer plastic bulb thingie melts.  I'll take them out and hit the hay - good night guys!

Tardis is ready, Mike - let's hit it!

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Good evening all,

IIABSDISEI with temps in the 70s.  A sad, embarassing day for Indiana.  I know we are not supposed to talk politics, but to turn out an honorable public servant who has served the state and the nation in a distinguished fashion for over 30 years is not a happy day for this Hoosier.  End of soap box rant.  Saucy wench and I both tired from putting mulch on landscaping in front of house.  Two pickup loads were quite a lot.  It does look nice.  Any thoughts of garden railroading are definitely gone.  TBIL and I can drive.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana

BOC: I hope those tests come out showing no cancer. I've had around eight or ten of them. Almost every bone in my right foot has been broken at least once and three of them had to be removed due to osteomyelitis, bone marrow infection in plain old fashioned non-Latin English. That was no picnic. That's another thing I hope you don't have a problem with. Osteomyelitis spreads like wildfire once it gets going.

Got the motor in the GP35 changed out. It now has a motor from a Proto 2000 FA1. I wanted to reuse the flywheels from the old ring magnet motor but the Proto motor has a smaller diameter shaft. That left me with a longer shaft run so I had to cobble together a pair of shafts from junk box bits. I just test ran it on address 00 and it runs just fine. Still has a bit of a growl from the gears.

Afternoon fellas and gals;        So i calls the cardio man for an appt. and the nurse says to me; "Did you see the Ranger game last nite?"   So i says i did. She says back; "No need for a check up, you had you're stress test already!"  Holy moly gondoly!    What a game!    It doesn't get any better than this.   My grandson calls me up ( he's ten)  to tell me the Rangers tied it up with only six seconds left and their going into overtime and he's got to go to bed. I tells him don't go to sleep just yet the Rangers are gonna score early.  ( How do i know?)  Sure enough, bingo!  Shot from the point ends it!   Small fry now thinks i'm the " Great Karnak"   What's wrong with that?        later.

My father found an antique in my mailbox today. What appears to be a 70's era Athearn GP35 with the power and drive line intact. It has what looks like the original black ring magnet motor with steel flywheels, spline drive shafts and brass worms, plastic gear towers with sintered wheels. I've test run it and it runs quite well. It has that signature Athearn coffee grinder growl that us Athearn old hats know so well. My intent is to convert it to DCC but I'll have to change out the motor first. Those old black motors take too much power.

KEV I like the idea of hooking the grill to the house propane. never need tanks to fill. And the son keeps "borrowing" a tank when he runs out of gas while cooking.

Banks Funny how being one state away can make  a difference in the rain. Lots of grass in our fields, shortage in yours.

JACK you should see our racoons dance on the greased pole! Whistling

RAY I think the CHIEF monitors me more than the other way around.Embarrassed By the way, any new recipes for PAT & RAY'S Restaurant? (or is it RAY & PAT'S). Roughage is good for you. The more grits the merrier!
