Happy birthday SJ.  Have a great day! Happy B-Day

Chief, your mom is in the Lord's hands.  Prayers sent for you and her.

Re no air conditioning, I went to school also with no a/c. in Virginia.  Got pretty sticky in there in may and early June.  We had no a/c at home either in those days.  Nobody did.  We had a big floor fan that sat in the middle of the living room and blew out in all directions.  Us kids liked to poke things in it an watch the fan eat it up.  Lucky we weren't hurt.  Used to swim in the river a lot to cool off in the summer.  When a/c movies came along that was great.

Pat, if I ever took up drinking again, those frosty mugs would be the way to go.  I've been a teatotaler for a long time.  I guess you could do the same thing with N/A beer.  Still fooling around trying to make sweet tea.  Got the receipe from my sister in Virginia but I think I messed up the tea bags by stiring them too much.  Got a lot of loose tea dregs on the bottom.  Sister says some people use something similar to a Mr. Coffee machine these days with filters for the tea grounds.  Nobody in my family cares if they have iced tea or not.  I'm the only Southerner here.

Ray

July and August gets a bit sticky too!Thumbs Down

We have used the Tea Machine, but prefer Sun Tea by putting 6-8 tea bags in a two quart jar and placing it in the sun. In 3 Hrs. you have great tea, no stiring, no loose grounds. Just add sugar (a must ) and/or lemon (optional).Thumbs Up

Greetings from Hazy Hot & Humid North East Florida

It's Tuesday here in H*ll, it feel like over 100F.  One vehicle I was in read 139F.

RE: The Air Conditioner.  Never had one in Mom & Dad's house.  And they just got central air like 2 years ago.  I had one for a year in my apartment, but since I moved here, it's a way of life...run from one air conditioned environment to the next Banged Head.

Jack: Yes.

As far as the Mrs.'s A/C, looks like I'll be junkyard hopping this weekend instead of riding.  And that's ok, because I need a wiring harness and computer from a 2000 360cid Dodge.  Oh, did I mention that it's all you can carry for $80?  I have a trick up my sleeve for the Wagon Smile,Wink, & Grin and I hope it works....

Angel Prayers for Mom, Chief.  Grandmom went through the same thing before she passed.  Last I saw her, my daughter would brush her hair and we would talk, but she said nothing and smiled.  It was so great that she could see her great grand daughter and I feel blessed that it could happen.

OK, that's all from the pits...check back later...Smile,Wink, & Grin

Afternoon Fellas

Cheif - Angel for your Mom. Can't be easy.

Looks like things are falling into place to get some major work done on the Sunroom/Screened porch this weekend... keeping my fingers (on my right hand) crossed.

Rainy ... but nice and cool .... windows wide open and fresh air flowing all through the house . Me and my card table set up in the train room ... the earthen bumpers arrived yesterday .

An older lady used to fix iced tea I really loved .... she used honey for sweetener and added a touch of mint to it ... ice cold and that touch of mint was extremely refreshing on hot days .

SJ has plenty of  "wind" to blow out that many candles when he wants it .... he's like me ... we think of a young blonde in a bikini and man we're 20 again !  Smile,Wink, & Grin

Good afternoon all,

IIABSDISEI with temps and humidity in the 90s (or feels like it).  Happy birthday, SJ!

To all,

If you ever get a chance to be in Rolesville or in the area, you must make arrangements to meet the "Chief".  A more gracious and hospitable person you will never meet.  We ran trains and had a nice seafood lunch (with hush puppies to die for) and talked for three hours in what seemed liked three minutes.  Got to see the birthday gift in action, and toured the house and met the pets.  Rolesville is a very nice town that is expanding greatly.  For some reason I could not get the Chief to watch the World Cup, but I am sure we will take in a soccer game on the next visit.  The delights from the garden will be well cooked by the Saucy Wench.

We are back in the Hoosier Land and glad to be home.  It is nice to travel and it is nice to be home.  I had Hotcakes and sausage from MickeyD's this morning on the dining car for breakfast.  TBIL anytime but watch out for storms.  I hope everyone has a good day and prayer's for Chief's mom.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana

A/C when growing up had a twin window fan in my room I learned quick it got cooler if I had it in the bottom of the window and opened an area on the top of window to let heat out as it pulled air in on the bottom my mother use to tell me to have it pull out the air but it worked better that way. when I was 11 th grade I think I felt like a big shot wow dad got an A/C for there room and one for my room I thought I was on top of the world that summer

Well just got power back as we lost it about 5:30 from a thunder storm that came thru. Got off computor about 5 when it started Smile

hope all having a good evening

Good Evenin' Ya'll From Seasonal Taxachusetts,

Why are the California boys so quiet about their Lakers and the NBA finals?

It was sunny and 70 today,  Finally got my hair cut, but the lady left all of the grey.  Maximus the dog nailed his first mouse today, chased it under the deck and wacked it with his paws.  Now if I can just get him dialed in on the chipmunks I won't need a cat as Pat had recommended.

I find it hard to believe that so many guys on this forum didn't have air conditioning in cars or homes until so much later in their lives.  My first non-junker car was a used 1969 Plymouth Fury III with a/c and over 90K on the odometer.  Never owned a vehicle after that without a/c.  Only my parents had a/c, a window unit they got for their bedroom in the mid 60s.  We did buy a second one, but my Dad and I accidentally dropped it out the window when we were installing it.  I think I was pushing 20 before my folks finally got central air.

Navyjack......so you grew up in Chicago near the elevated tracks?  Small world.  So did I, Rogers Park apartment when I was born.  We may have been neighbors.

MikeC....glad you made it home to Indiana safe and sound.  I have not met Chief but I have talked to him over the phone.  Check that.  I listened while he talked.  Whistling

SirJames....what are your birthday plans?  A wild party?  Champagne?  Banilla and root beer?

Later, gang.  The beacon is on and I'm bringing a chocolate rasberry torte

Evenin' All.

First post in a good while, kinda tweaked the back a bit after doing the "Paul Bunyon" thing with some eucalyptus trees that incurred some wind damage a week+ ago. A bit uncomrtable sitting for long periods.

Happy B-Day wishes for all !!!!! Thumbs UpThumbs Up

Did wander thru the county fair today, was a good boy though. Only had one Cinnamon Roll, breakfast, and a waffle cone with choc & vanilla ice cream, lunch. One thing I did notice that really sounded gross was chocolate covered bacon. Thumbs Down Bacon = yes, choc = yes, but together = no way.

Be back later, the lasagna is ready. Dinner

I'm baaaack. Big Smile

Things are still "rockin-n-rollin" around here, not as strong as earlier but enuff to let you know it ain't over til the fat lady sings.

Got things well under way for my 4th of July Train , got a vat car converted to condiments but still need to locate some really small spoons to mount on it's side. Will be running on the 4th so we are thinking of having our spouses come in to join us and turn it into a pic-a-nic.

My 08 p/u is my first car, err truck to have A/C and an auto tranny, the better half has had the A/C for many years with her cars. My last truck I bought in 81, figure I mite as well go whole hog since it will probably be the last that I buy. Whistling

Brutus, My upside-down tomatoes seem to really be doing well. Still green but I am really looking forward to some BLT's or just plan old tomatoe sammys. Dinner

Later guys !

 Hello all,

Stopped in for a quick cup.

Chief, Prayers for your Mom.   I've still got both my parents. But at 88 and 89 I know my time with them is limited. They've both gone down hill considerably the last couple of years.

Sir James, Happy B-Day Hope you have many more

The 1045 Flagman I won came the other day. It's in surprisingly good shape, not restored. Works too. I'll put it under Dad's tree this year.

Grand kids were at the house when I got home Monday. Trains got some exercise.

88, good luck with the Sun room. When do you expect your kids?

Leaving for Fenwick Island Delaware on Saturday morning. May take in the Delaware Seashore Train Show in Rehoboth Beach Saturday if there is time. I'll wave to those in the Baltimore area on the way through. I use Route 32 to bypass Baltimore. Does anybody know a better way?

Prayers for all that may need them.

Morning all

Hot and humid!  Had to fix the pushmower.  Ran over something and busted the hub adapter.  Luckly the shaft was not bent.  $18 later mowing grass again.

Ran trains in the garage for a while with the kids.  Sure do miss the layout.

Got to go

May God bless

Mornin' Fellas.

Week three of PT comes to an end tonight. Feeling a little better in the elbow now, but the wrist is screaming, "DON'T GO! I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!" The swelling has increased a tad, and sleeping is getting harder and harder... guess it is time to ask my FiL and BiL to bring a recliner out for me.

Banks

88, good luck with the Sun room. When do you expect your kids?

Banks - we are hoping by the end of the year. SusieQ would like them here by Christmas, but I think that would be vry overwhelming for them. All the information we have recieved indicates that to be the case. We're still waiting on the typed home study, then we submit for the I600 (I think) it is the international adoption form for adopting from a Non-Hague Country. Then once that comes in we have to get finger printed again, and do some additional paperwork, then get the docier translated... not sure, but somewhere in there we get matched with kids... then the travelling begins...

 navyjack -

I found this on Yahoo! Answers:

"Actually grits are very good for you. Just use water instead of milk or use skim milk. it's what you put in the grits that's fattening." See what GiGi says.Whistling

Sweet Ice Tea must have been invented in the South:Thumbs Up

1879 - The oldest sweet tea recipe (ice tea) in print comes from a community cookbook called Housekeeping in Old Virginia, by Marion Cabell Tyree, published in 1879:

Ice Tea. - After scalding the teapot, put into it one quart of boiling water and two teaspoonfuls green tea. Strain, without stirring, through a tea strainer into a pitcher. Let it stand till tea time and pour into decanters, leaving the sediment in the bottom of the pitcher. Fill the goblets with ice, put two teaspoonfuls granulated sugar in each, and pour the tea over the ice and sugar. A squeeze of lemon will make this delicious and healthful, as it will correct the astringent tendency.

Good Morning guys,

Been away for the last several days....down in Orlando.  The news said it was 102 with the heat index. Felt like it too!  Took in SeaWorld one day and the rest of the time was spent relaxing at condo.  We did get to the Lego Store and I purchased a Lego Train for myself for son and I to build together.  He got a pirate ship that was shipped and should be here today.

In going back and reading a few pages, I see that SJ has had a birthday....hope it was a good one.  Also note that Chief's Mom is having trouble.  Sorry to hear of it.  Chief, you and your Mom will be in our prayers.  Tough to see our loved ones in decline.  So long as you know the direction she will be going.  God Bless you and your family.

The movie has been progressing very well.  We have some big action scenes these next two weeks.  Lots of prayer heading into all this as it is far more than we could do on our own.  We have a professional stunt man coming in to advise as safety is key.

Time to head to work and then to the set.  The rest these past few days was much needed, but that makes it hard to get back to the grind.  With regard to air conditioning, we first got it about 1980 and the only room with it was Mom and Dad's, so us kids would sleep on sleeping bags on their floor.  Prior to that, at night, we had a big fan Dad would put in the dining room window and we would all sleep on sleeping bags in the living room.  With front windows, it had a lot of air moving through there.  Dad still only has a window unit in his room and one in the living room.  We have multiple zone, multiple unit heat pumps to control the temps in the house.  While I wouldn't have it any other way, my kids know of no other way of life.

God Bless,
Dennis

PS: Brent, the paperwork is like trying to buy a house!  I think that was the toughest part of the whole thing.  Of course, the feelings that you experience when you first hold your child (ren), is so worth it.

Aloha all from a spectacular day in Chicago. All the bad weather has been sent east with my compliments. May be hosting the daughter and boyfriend for a late lunch if they ever get their act together to catch a train. He goes back home tonight and she's heading to a Cubs game. What a life. Happy B-DayHappy B-DayHappy B-Day to Sir James. Great chatting with him, Brutus and Ole Timer last eve. Dinner with a pastor candidate tonight. Not looking forward to hosting nine other people, but the bride has made this into much more of a shindig than I expected... Off to my first meeting of the day.  I see Chile has beaten Honduras this morning. I've seen 9 games in 3 days. LOL.

88,

Good luck with the kids.  Did you get my PM?Wink

Brutus,

Did you see the video for the new 360?  I have my fingers crossed for an RROD.

Jim,

I found the reason for the 350 not getting power to the panel.  Both wires were broken off where they were soldered to the truck rivets.  I've never seen that before.  The smoke unit should get here today or tomorrow...

After buying the Royal Blue, I've put train spending on hold and turned to games right now.  Picked up a nice early longbox example of Twisted Metal the other night, and will be buying a second from a co worker.  I've also got my eye on a factory sealed copy of Twisted Metal 2, but I need the $200 first.

Good afternoon all,

IIABSDISEI with temps in the 80s.  Mowed the rest of the yard that Lucas did not get done due to the rains.  Sweating like crazy.  Got caught up on all the papers.  See where I received a Lionel Christmas catalog.  Some nice sets but nowhere to put them even if I had the money.  May get to play a game tonight (or not if the fields are still too wet).  See where Spain got knocked off by the Swiss.  I had the regular fare on the dining car as it rolled in from "Points East".  TBIL after the game tonight and I can drive.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana

PS  Anyone who needs to travel from Cincy to West Virginia might want to look at taking Kentucky 9 (or the AA) from 275 to 64 at Grayson.  Basically a two lane interstate with little traffic and nice roads.

Pat, sun tea sounds good.  I might give that a try cause we have plenty of sun here.

Navyjack, I like grits in a bowl with soft boiled eggs placed on top along with bacon bits.  When you break the egg yolks it goes all through the grits.  Yum yum!  Same receipe works for cream of rice.

Had a surprise visit from my youngest brother yesterday.  He is from Bristol, Virginia and is out here on business.  We went out to eat and then I gave him a demonstration of my train layout.  He couldn't stay long but we were lucky to get to see him.  He is the one that worked for a bar-b-que company when he was younger and he knows how to make the Eastern North Carolina Q.  He gave me his receipe.

Chief, my brother said he ate at one of the Smithfield places near Raleigh a while back and thought they had good bar-b-que.  That one in probably near you.  The bar-b-que I had shipped to me from them was wonderful as far as I'm concerned.  Your garden must be producing good by now.  Nothing like that fresh stuff for flavor.  I have a couple of volunteer tomato plants growing behind my garage.  I have been giving them water and they are getting tomatoes already.  Hope they can survive all the direct sunlight they are getting when it gets hot here.

later,

Ray

Navyjack......in Chicago, you lived on N. Kenmore Avenue and I lived on N. Lakewood Avenue (1951-1954), about 6200 North, not too far from you, a bit North and West.  We both lived in apartments after WWII.  You were closer to the Lake Michigan waterfront and the elevated train tracks.  Your family moved near Devon and Milwaukee Avenues while my family moved near Peterson and Cicero Avenue, about 3 miles apart.  You and I both ate at SuperDawg, swam at Walen pool, played on the toboggan slides, and went to the miniature golf course by you.  I'll bet we may have met!!!!!!!  In the 1950s-1960s.
